Don't Miss

Don't applaud too loud, he might be noticed

It’s a secretLast week was a big week for one of App State’s greatest – if not THE greatest – football players. He got a big honor on campus. Know who it is? You don’t? Well go ahead and check out goasu.com. Look around. Take your time. I’ll wait.

Finished? Now then, know who it is? What’s that you say, you didn’t see anything about any great Mountaineer getting any great honor? Well then, lean close to your monitor and I’ll tell you. It’s a secret, I guess, so it’s better I whisper. Fits the occasion.

So lean close ….. Closer ….. Okay then. *a-hem* [quietvoice] “Dexter Coakley was named a distinguished almunus last Friday.” [/quietvoice]

Shhhhhh! Pass it on.

Three Appalachian State University graduates have been honored by the university’s alumni association for their contributions to the university and accomplishments in their professions.

The awards were presented April 25 during a banquet at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on campus.

William Dexter Coakley of Dallas, Texas, received the association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award.

If a tree gets a medal in the woods, and no one is around to see it, it is really that distinguished?

Last time I heard Dexter was on campus, he was having his jersey retired one afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. In the spring. With the stadium as packed as you’d expect it to be …. in the spring. The SPRING!?! A field hockey game draws a bigger crowd than he got that day.

This for a player of the year who RULED KBS. Who RULED in Big D. Heck, he rules in Madden!

Life could be worse, I guess.

Dexter, you rule. Always have. Always will. Congrats. I hope to see you at KBS – in the fall – for an overdue [loudvoice]30,000-strong[/loudvoice] ovation!
