Calling out those Tar Heels

UPDATE – A UNC fan blog picks up on this post and responds, giving three good reasons Carolina shouldn’t play App State. They all boil down to – “App State might win.” And you call yourself a BCS program.

doucheNow ain’t this cute. Suddenly everybody is high on UNC football.

The Tarheels were recently picked to finish second in the ACC’s Coastal Division. Mel Kiper Jr. is playing kissey with them. And he’s not the only one.

Impressive hype, until you consider how lame UNC really is. Taking the route of the Waffle House, UNC avoids scheduling any real in-state competition. Can’t play App State. Uh-uh.

Butch Davis will do anything for love. But he won’t do that.

Moore acknowledged Wednesday that he’s tried to get the Tar Heels on their schedule. So far, North Carolina has balked.

Moore said he’s puzzled why the Tar Heels scheduled McNeese State for their season opener instead of the Mountaineers. He said a matchup with North Carolina would be a “great football game” and “good for the state.”

Can’t have any really challenges, can we Butch baby? Good thing we have a bigger bed.

I want to make one thing clear. UNC will never play us until:

1)They are going into the season ranked in the top 10

    2) They know were going to have a down year

At least we get more money for our stadium upgrades than they do for their ancient gym now only used for women's basketball.

    Oh wait, NO, WE DON'T.

Chapel Hill is definitely running scared. Last year we would have run the score up on them. They are just waiting for butch davis to start cheating in football at the same level that Roy Williams cheats in basketball. Once they get to that level where they are an NFL farm team like their basketball is an NBA farm team, they will play us, and Jerry Moore can't be coach, and we have to be in a down year. Ohhhh and UNC-CH sucks.

locke, who says we wouldn't schedule both? I would much rather have the satisfaction of beating LSU AND UNC. I think we'd be much more likely to cancel playing somewhere like Presbyterian.

To my knowledge, Locke, ECU didn't have any open dates the past few seasons, and I believe that is the case for several years. ECU is a very appealing opponent to BCS conference schools, such is why ECU has had long term deals for home and away series with VT and WVU. I would love to see an East versus West game with ASU and ECU but it's more ECU's flexibility causing problems, as I see it. I don't believe ECU would turn down an offer to play us. Skip Holtz has slowly brought that program back to life, especially with the Sheraton Bowl win against Boise State. It's sad that I've read numerous rumors reporting that WVU wanted him, and that was confirmed by WVU, and that he will most likely be gone in the next year or two when that coaching carousel starts up again. And for the record, whatever idiots say a school like UNC has nothing to gain from playing us are making the most illogical excuse ever. You have nothing to gain from playing any FCS school, even lowly Samfor. If you want something to gain, schedule a BCS conference team, if you win you look great, if you lose it was against equal competition. The one thing that is holding UNC back is the idea that they could lose to ASU, why on earth would they schedule McNeese State but not us? I'm not saying we would beat them, because I don't want to speak in absolutes, but clearly, the notion that the game would mean more to us than to UNC scares Butch Davis, and alot of other coaches…cough cough Bobby Bowden, and they don't want to see how that would translate when it's all said and done.

The tarholes seem to get a free pass from the media.Since Butch has arrived the media treats them like they won 3 straight NCAA titles like we did. We actually earn our ink by winning 3 titles- they just get attention due to a coaching change in his 2nd year who recruits players that cannot qualify academically to enter Clemson.

FYI – App State approached UNC, Wake and other instate I-A schools for a game to open the 2008 season, but all turned us down. LSU actually had a game set for next season, but kindly made room for us this season. Otherwise App State would probably not have a I-A game this year.

Translation – we have a date open next season. (Hint, hint)

Locke, you sound like a fool. I do nothing but extol praise on ECU football yet somehow you respond with App St fears ECU football? That makes a whole lot of sense. Not to mention the fact that the NC legislature doesn't decide who plays who in football. Do you know anything about collegiate athletics, especially in NC? As AppFan pointed out, we had an open date, LSU also had an open date, so naturally both schools reached an agreement to move up a scheduled game from next year to this year to remedy that situation. We tried to get numerous schools Wake, UNC, and even FSU…which of course decided to play lowly Western instead, but all of those schools said no. Why would we drop our game with LSU to play UNC? You have no knowledge of this situation, or anything dealing with college sports in NC it seems. So, go find something better to do, and don't come back unless it is to tell all of us how life is inside Butch Davis' colon.

Sigh… how many times have I said this to ECU fans? ASU leads the all time series against ECU. ASU has nothing to fear from ECU. The talent level is at worst, the same on both schools even with ASU being in 1-aa. By the way, speaking of gov't in football, didn't the NC legislature force NC State to play you guys in Greenville?

I can't believe I am going to defend the Holes, but you don't know who would have won the past few years. Two years ago, a sorry Wolfpack team beat ASU, and then went on to have a miserable season. Locke, I'll acknowledge your good will. Honestly, I think Dynasty may be a little young. Thanks for the well wish. App Fans have traditionally been humble towards our opponents – the second we get too big for our britches, we're gonna get thumped. I'd love to see more in-state action, but it won't happen until we change divisions. Its about recruiting. When Jim Grobe took over at Wake, he swore to stop playing App. His comment was "we have everything to lose, and nothing to gain."

The poster at the UNC site made reference to a comment about the kid from Burlington that could not qualify academically at Clemson. Akula, I think it's intersting that UNC fans bring up the App loss to NCSU when they talk about not wanting to play us. It doesn't seem very impressive to me for a I-A school to beat a I-AA school 23-10. That's defintely a loss, but most I-A teams beat their I-AA opponents by a pretty huge margin.

  33. Drew

ASU fans think about it, what would you rather have? A win over a crappy NC State squad or a win over Michigan? I guarantee you that the Michigan win got our name out there much better than a win over State or Carolina would ever have. Look at the loss to State as a blessing in disguise. Michigan wasn't expecting much out of us and ended up getting hit. If we had beaten State Michigan probably would have practiced harder.

I would love to see ASU have one game with each of the FBS teams in North Carolina over the next few years. Who wouldn't wanna see ASU v. ECU in a home-and-home. How about UNC, State, Duke(OK, that might be too mean to the Devils), Wake…etc. Rivalries are great, in-state rivalries are better. Sadly, the "we have nothing to gain" excuse has caught on in this state. I guarantee that East Carolina will step up and play ASU before any of the ACC teams in North Carolina. ECU knows there is always one thing you can earn by playing a team like ASU…RESPECT.
