Let's just call it the Alltime Anti-Upset

It was what it was. The king of the big boys stepping on the king of the little ones. The score could have been a teeny bit closer if not for several dropped balls and some shoddy tackles, but the outcome would never be in doubt.

The Apps went against one of the very best. They took a pounding, but never backed down. No shame in that. Come SoCon time, those Lil’ Sammy defenders will seem to run in . . . → Read More: Let's just call it the Alltime Anti-Upset

The life story of AE

Photo from the Wilkes County gang

Huge profile in the New York Times.

The baby came 10 days late, weighed 4 pounds 11 ounces and had to be rushed to a neonatal intensive care unit. But through all the chaos here in this lush town, Freddie Edwards predicted that his boy, born without breath, would someday take the country’s breath away.

He told his girlfriend, the baby’s mother, Deborah Anderson: “That boy is going to make somebody a . . . → Read More: The life story of AE

Asking ourselves how we can beat LSU

I think I just had a heart attack

We interview ourself on the week’s most important topic, the Battle Royal in the Bayou.

Q. Yes or no, can App State beat LSU?

A. Yes. Any team is beatable. That’s why you play the game. Otherwise, Perfectville would be population 2.

Q. But is it likely App State can beat LSU?

A. Let’s just say there’s a chance App State can win. I wouldn’t bet my house on that. Maybe the dog. But not the house.

Q. Just how could App State win?

A. Simple. All App State has to do is, in Pierre Banks’ words, “We’ve got to limit mistakes. We can’t have turnovers. We can’t be out of position on defense. We’ve got to not allow the big play. We can’t let them have long passes and long runs. We’ve got to make them work for everything they get. We have to give our offense a chance to get out there and do something.” As I said, simple.

Q. Simple! You do realize that it’s been more than a year since LSU lost a game in regulation?

A. Nice Rumsfeldism there. Yeah, I know that. But look who did beat LSU. Kentucky and Arkansas, both one *cough* in Death Valley. Both were high scoring affairs. Kentucky scored three times in the air and passed for 250 yards, and the Tigers are now green at the corners. In the other game, Arkansas players not named McFadden ran for 179 yards and two TDs. Two losses against programs considered “weak” 8-5 teams. And against that vaunted LSU defense.

Q. Are you seriously comparing App State to two SEC programs?

Aren't you forgetting a few guys?

The SportsNetwork has its game preview out. Its conclusion – LSU 34, Appalachian State 17.

The reasoning is boilerplate. AE. LSU D-line. Miles is a genius. And so on. But this critique stuck out.

Keep an eye on wideout Brian Quick, a tremendous athlete who could prove to be Edwards’ top target in this opener. Considering that the three top pass catchers from ’07 are gone, Quick does not have time to develop slowly. The freshman must perform well . . . → Read More: Aren't you forgetting a few guys?

Speaking of televising games

Yesterday MASN announced its college football schedule for this fall. No App State-JMU. Just as well. The network is cursed. How else to explain Really Black Saturday?
