Don't Miss

A labor of App love

All hail the Tailgate on One! … Awwwww .. Hell ….

Belated, but beloved, we salute you, Tailgate of One!

We knew yours was truly a grand sight. And by grand, we mean just how many grands you must have dropped on that thang.

They found a 1964 M35a1 Army truck (known to soldiers as “a deuce and a half”) in Boone. They bought it in August 2007, knowing it needed some repairs.

Short and Rhyne towed it to Boone. As they made the repairs, they noticed pieces were missing from a part. They considered buying a new part, but it would have cost as much as the truck.

They phoned all over the U.S. and found a place that could rebuild that particular part, the injector pump.

Now check out all the … uh … “extras.” Let’s see GM offer this!

They welded a seat platform from a bass fishing boat to the top; the handrails are removable, so they won’t hit stoplights. They added a generator that provides 3,000 watts for a blast siren (they sound it when the team or band walks by), a griddle for cooking breakfast, a rope light outlining a 3-foot-wide football and “A” atop the flagpole.

They attached their refurbished trailer with a charcoal grill and mounted stainless steel countertops, and added stairs off the back.

Typical Saturdays include kids climbing all over the truck, posing for pictures and offering suggestions. Short said, “All I will say about next year is, this is just the beginning!”

Well done, lads. Well done. Now for the really big challenge …. think that thing can make it to Greenville?

Rumor has it that the "lads" of Tailgate of One have found a 2nd bigger "badder" truck that may be fixed up and added to their rolling stock in the future.

A trip to the Rose Bowl isn't bad. Southern California is a nice place to be in the dead of winter.

I've heard of better prizes, but it's better than nothing.
