Now on sale at – cause nuttin’ promotes Pack pride more than bragging on four of your … /snicker … six wins.

What else do they have to brag about?

As we type this, it appears an even better shirt may be on the horizon – Pepperoni Extra Cheese Dot Com Champions!

At one point this season, these two teams were a combined 3-11. Now they are a combined two games over .500, and playing the Bowl—not the Papa John’s Bowl; Papa John’s dot com. Sure, it’s on national television, but it started at 3:00 p.m. ET on a Monday afternoon. Today is not a holiday. Most of the Western world is either at work or on vacation, and if they’re on vacation, they sure as hell better not be watching TV. I can’t imagine either of these teams wants to be there or is happy about the way their season turned out. Their respective athletic departments will be lucky to break even on this one and no one, anywhere, wants to travel to Birmingham between Christmas and New Year’s (or ever.) In other words, this is the horrible bowl game that gives horrible bowl games a bad name. No good will come of this.

Heck, if they win, crown ’em Alabama champions! Or would that be New Jersey champions? Kentucky? We are soooo confused.

Last week at my in-laws', who are huge State fans, they were talking about how they were state champions. Rah rah rah. I reminded them that State is a D-1A team and they were 5-6 against other D-1A teams. "But what a comeback we had at the end of the season." I reminded them that they hadn't defeated Appalachian State, so they couldn't claim a "state championship." They rolled their eyes.

Later they complained about how silly it is to have 34 bowl games, quickly forgetting their 6-6 Wolfpack is playing in the Bowl in Birmingham… on a Monday… in the middle of the day… and it's not a holiday. But pointing out the holes in their logic is like talking to a brick wall… so all hail the Wolfpack!

we beat all the teams we played in North AND South Carolina…whats the big deal? i guess when your football program strives for mediocrity, having a regular season record of .500 and beating (by ONE point as of 5:33 pm) a 7-5 Rutgers team in the Monday Afternoon Pizza-Lovers Irrelevant Bowl to push your season to a "winning season", you look for ANYTHING to make a t-shirt out of….even if it is inaccurate.

    state champions…is that 3A or 4A?

they should include this with the t-shirt – it would go well with those cool finger-puppets they like to do…

Back in the 90's, Florida State made "State Champions" t-shirts in years when they beat both Miami and Florida. Here's the difference: being a "state champion" in Florida meant they beat bad@$$ Miami Hurricanes and the perennial Top 10 Gators, not 4-8 Duke, 8-5 UNC, 8-5 Wake, and C-USA ECU. Beating those two teams left zero doubt what FSU would have done against the likes of USF, UCF, FAU, etc., let alone Fla. A&M.

NC State's resume doesn't come close to proving they'd beat ASU. Their claim as "State Champions" is weak.

Besides, they may have been 4-0 against NC teams, but they're now 5-7, with the loss to Rutgers, against the FBS.

    State champions?

I think Richmond County Senior High has something might have something to say about that.

I think it's funny to hear ya'll ridicule the Pack like this. Most schools make t-shirts for everything, believe me, I have two degrees from ACC schools. Remember O'Brien is trying to turn around a program left in bad shape by Amato. I believe ASU could beat most ACC schools if they play their A game, but a whole season in the ACC might be another story. But I do think we both know the importance of your starting QB healthy.

Could the Tennessee in Knoxville beat UTC, Memphis, or Vanderbilt?

doesn't matter, they can't beat Florida.

If App had beaten Western and Elon, but no one else, should we have a tshirt about it?

So good to see them get so close to beating Rutgers, and then fall apart at the end. Maybe I wouldn't be such a Pack hater, but when I attended the App/State game a couple of years ago, they had the most obnoxious fans. I had a bunch of drunk Pack fans literally getting right up into my face and shouting obscenties as I walked to the stadium with my 70 year-old father-in-law. Real classy. So it was good to see the Pack choke on Pizza Day.

let's see……Appalachian defeated Wofford, The Citadel, Furman and Presbyterian and SC does that make ASU the South Carolina State Champs?…can we get a ring or a trophy for that?

    NCSU=North Carolina's Sorriest University.
You're losers in everything, Pack. That's your heritage. No t-shirt can change that.

Once again you can find fans like that at any stadium, I've seen it at App(been to as many ASU games as any of these posters in the last 4yrs probably). The classiest fans I've ever seen were at Ohio St. IMO. As for losers in everything, State is one of a few schools to have multiple nat'l titles in basketball along with an undefeated season. I agree they suck lately for the most part in sports, but don't be surprised to see them do well in football next year. Russell Wilson is one of the best young QBs in the nation. As I've said before, I feel like most people on here are closet Carolina fans, what happened to them in football?

You can count me out as a "closet Carolina fan." I find it rather weak of them that they have played ASU once: 69 years ago! As the son of two Florida State alumni, I grew up a Seminole fan and remain one to this day. (You can bet I'd be pulling for ASU if they every played though.)

I agree that every fanbase has some bad apples, but some are worse than others. I have heard from multiple parties that both ECU and Marshall have few, if any, fans who aren't extremely rude, even towards children. I've also heard nothing but good things about Michigan, Ohio State, and Purdue fans. Most other fanbases seem to be a mixed bag, including ASU.

I'm definitely not a "closet Carolina fan". Far from it to be honest. I did pull for them in the Meineke bowl just because it was an ACC team, which I usually do, but I was kinda hoping State would lose even though I have friends that go there.

And, for what it's worth Seth, Carolina finished 8-5 losing by 1 point to WVU in their bowl game. State only finished 6-7 losing their bowl game by 6.

I'm personally a UNC hater! haha Don't like them in anything! Grew up a Penn State fan because of my family ties and will be cheering them on in the Rose Bowl (one of those bowl games that must of us WANT to see) haha. Anyway, down with UNC, NC State, and Wake. I would personally pull for DUKE over all those teams!

Let the Pack make their T-Shirts. They are NOT going after us. They are going after the Tar Holes. The Pack did play us. UNC- CH is too chickenshit to do so. Respect them for doing that(playing ASU).
Moutaineers > Tarheels (even if it is WVU and not ASU)
Also let's go get ECU in September but still give them respect for playing us.

I do appreciate the banter, just used to talking directly to Carolina fans, etc. I am on ASU's side I find it funny to see all this talk directed at another school that has nothing to do with App really. I must defend my Alma Mater, but I enjoy defending ASU with any of my ACC friends any chance I get. All of that just for the record.

Appstate, while living in another state most of the time and never in Boone(my fiance is an 08 alumnus of ASU) I have been to 23 games I believe, that includes Michigan and all 3 National Championships. I am a season ticket holder and Yosef Club member. I am about to start working with NC State's football team. As you can see I have reson to take pride in both schools. Thanks for the comments though!

How do you neuter a wolf? Put him on a football field.

Seriously, my hate for Pack stems from how their fans treated me and my seventy-year-old father-in-law at the NC State/App game a couple of years ago. Absolutely obnoxious. The hate only grew because of the Raleigh N&O, and their inability to see beyond the beltline. They'll praise NC State football for just taking the field or for State players not missing meetings with their parole officers, but they'll completely ignore App football. Yeah, pretty juvenile of me to get bent out of shape about such trivial things, but it gripes me.

I also have Penn State connections and my experience at Happy Valley was very pleasant. They, like Michigan have fans that aren't obnoxious and very welcoming to visitors.

Does no one remember when State had a parade a few years ago because they won their bowl game. Nevermind the fact that they finished 4th in the ACC that season…they won a bowl, so they had a parade. I will never understand the insistence of some teams to celebrate mediocrity. There were no incredible upsets for N.C. State this season, they did not win the conference…heck they even lost their bowl. To buy and wear this t-shirt only screams "I am a fan of a team that has virtually nothing substantial to celebrate." Why not make Russell Wilson t-shirts? At least he accomplished something relevant this season. I would hope that N.C. State fans realize that this shirt is ridiculous and that beating UNC, Wake, Duke and ECU does not warrant a commemorative t-shirt.

This is a joke. I think it's time for the likes of Carolina, State, Wake, and Duke step it up and start playing App. Furthermore, it's time for us to step it up and go D-I. Playing in a conference with private schools with 3,000 students is rediculous.

Mark my word, if we don't go DI soon, Charlotte will step in and take our slot in Conf USA. We need to beat ECU next year and prove that we can play at the next level.

  26. Michael

    January 2, 2009 at 1:27 pm

My guess is that the year NC State threw that parade was for the 2002 season. Yes, they may have finished 4th or so in the ACC, yet they were the best team in the ACC that year, hands down. State went 10-3 that year, which was both the best overall record among ACC teams that year (FSU, that year's champ, went 9-5 and also lost to State), but it was also the best year State ever had. They also held Notre Dame without an offensive touchdown, who was top ten entering the game. I can't blame them for throwing a parade if it was for that banner year.

If it was for another year, then my point is moot.

Appfanmidwest, keep in mind that we did lose by 20 points at home to one of those "private schools with 3,000 students" in the playoffs.

Don't be ashamed that we're 1-AA, even if we don't pull out the game against ECU. Besides, I think that between the Michigan game and all those games against wake forest we have already more than proven we can play at the next level, and with 22 extra scholarships, we'd be able to prove it even more.
