What a travesty for someone that has "given their all for Appalachian State" to be treated as if they didn't exist.
A National Hall of Fame coach deserves better.
Do your own thinking- who's contract ends on a Monday morning, April 16th– not Mance's. Who ever spoke or wrote about retiring in April–not Mance. Has anyone tried to retrieve the April 20th AP wire that said Mance had been fired?- Pretend you just fired Mance, and someone came in and said.. we need a statement for the media.. you stand there thinking.. ummm.. uhh.. let's see.. just say uh..we just wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Was there some big need for App to get their hands on some wrestling money so they could fire Fancher and pay him and another coach even more than Fancher? That is what it looks like. If Mance is the legend and memorable person people say– don't let this get buried under 15 versions- because that is what is happening– and I believe what some people would like to happen. Just use your common sense.
I attended ASU during Coach Mance's early years. I was an athlete in another sport but I always had a great deal of respect for the wrestling program in the late 70's.I just don't understand how such a dedicated coach as he was not allowed to leave on his own terms.
Amen Appking. I think AppFan needs to run this story DAILY until someone starts answering some questions as to why a legend is out at Appalachian State. I did not wrestle at ASU. I never attended a match. BUT you don't end the career of a legendary coach without giving him the respect and send-off that is deserved. This is an embarassment to the entire Appalachian State family and I believe it is far worse than any ill-fated basketball coaching searches.
I have to agree Jamey. I can't understand why more people aren't upset with the way CC fired our wrestling coach. Coach Mance did nothing but represent our school the right way for over 30 years and he is fired with no explanation. That makes no sense. The actions of CC are an embarassment but I guess he just figured that no one would call him on it, and so far that seems to be correct. CC screwed up big time on this one and something should be done about it.
On a 10 point scale- the basketball coach firing/ hiring fiasco is only a 4 compared to the Paul Mance fiasco– however, all those fiascos are bound to be related. And in trying to figure out what a 4 is compared to a 10– when you publicly see that Kelsey is gone– Conroy is in all liklihood gone, and Watkins publicly said he wasn't talking to those people– they couldn't be serious about Holland–that "4" is no small thing. It looks like we will eventually have to head back to Buzz and offer him the way they did when we first started, i.e. start over if he rejects.
