I didn't need a poll to know that! GO ASU!

Anybody here planning on shelling out the $17 (per person!) and doing the App-sponsored ECU tailgate in Greenville?

  3. Ry_ATO

    August 27, 2009 at 7:40 am

I don't believe that preseason rankngs mean anything. I hope I am still allowed to post after I say this but I believe the Michigan game proved that. I just believe anyone can be beaten any day and thats why you play the game. There shouldn't be rankings until they have played a few games.

I have 12 of us going, and we all are tailgating with theApp sponsored thing. easier than doing it ourselves…although I am sure we will bring extra libations for consumption

I've never paid $17 for breakfast.

This is old news. These ratings have been out at least 7 days.

There are 10 of us taking part in the ASU-sponsored tailgate. I will still be bringing flags (plural if my new one gets here from the AppFan Store in time), a canopy, chairs, music and libations. i was planning on just heading over to the "official" tailgate for food (and two beverages) so we didn't have to bring the grill and utensils all the way to Greenville. unless the party is booming…then we will just stay there and get our money's worth.

Three of us got tickets and plan to attend after we set the morning off right with some cold ones before hand…

My crowd is planning to shell out the $17. There will be around 8 of us showing up in full ASU gear. Hope to actually meet some of you fine folks during the festivities.

Can someone create an official AppFan shirt or wristband (like a Livestrong) or something so if i see a fellow AppFan'er out and about i know who they are?

  12. Dan

Good call Geoff. My group's considering heading over there – primarily out of concern for stuff being vandalized by the lovely denizens of Greenville we've heard so much about. One of the guys in our group made some cool cornhole boards we'd have to see wrecked, esp. during football season.

I did a double take on an "Armantistrong" tee shirt some one had on at Fanfest….I'm certain i'm behind the times, but that was first time seeing that one…forgive tardiness to the party.

BWAH HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
OK OK I almost choked on that one. Take a look at the ESPN.COM rankings for top 25 Pre season… I think that is…. is that? It is ECU with 30 votes for top 25….Hey, and look, there is App State right there with… well..they didn't make the page at all. Neither did Davidson's JV team. What's that tell ya? Who voted on this poll? Everyone at the Math building on campus yesterday between the hours of 1 and 3 pm? Leave the voting to the pros.

  15. Joe

    August 27, 2009 at 11:08 am

The pros who almost always never get the preseason votes right? Ok, I will leave it to them.. doesn't matter to us either way.. shouldn't matter for you either — you're not going to win a championship!

ESPN are the experts??? Good one; Whats that poll based on? Any real facts or Dr. Lou's homerism????

  17. Jamey

    August 27, 2009 at 11:14 am

I was thinking about just grabbing some of those stick-on nametags and throwing then on any of the current Appfans that I already know. I know for sure that Appfan Robert and Appfan JC will be in attendance. And my money is on Appfan Wright and Appfan DA also making appearances with my band of gypsies.

  18. Dan

    August 27, 2009 at 11:21 am

reality check – worthless preseason rankings aside, we will see who the better team is on the field in just under 9 days. In the meantime, congrats on being in the "others receiving votes" category on a top 25 poll, i'm sure that's what Holtz is shooting for down there.

  19. DRM

    August 27, 2009 at 11:39 am

Who voted on this poll? Who VOTED??? Keep up, will ya, reality? Otherwise, just confine your posts to the purple blogs.

Polls mean NOTHING…. But Vegas Points I listen too. 8 points of which 3 are for home team, that leaves us with "5" points as the ECU advantage according to Vegas. I'd say thats a REAL close game if the ref's don't try to steal the game for the Pirates !!!!!!!!!!!

    GO APPS…….FIGHT APPS….Kick Purple Pirate A$$

  21. Mike

    August 27, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Not a poll purple boy, a rating. And we are rated higher than you. Our SATs are higher too. And our Dean's List QB is smarter than yours. Our campus is nicer too, and our town is better. And on Sept 5th, we are taking you down.

  22. appfantoo

    August 27, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Not paying any fee to attend any 'official' tailgate – we will officially be raising h#ll about 20 strong smack-dab in the middle of the Pirate Club tailgate area.

Hopefully we won't cause a schism.

  23. Gwaltineer

    August 27, 2009 at 2:48 pm

i think the fact that someone is so excited about getting 30 votes, he'd go to another team's site and yell about it is a reality check

  24. Dan

    August 27, 2009 at 2:59 pm

waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off topic, but thought i'd post this for reality check. From Doyle at Sportsline:

East Carolina's chancellor, Steve Ballard, issued a web statement to the masses about the school's financial woes. The title was "ECU's budget picture," and Ballard's statement began like this:

"The budget picture is bleak …"

He predicted "dramatic cutbacks that will affect every aspect of our mission" as he projected the school's potential budget shortage at being close to $60 million. But still the ECU football team has been spending tens of thousands of dollars to spend the Friday night before home games in a local hotel. Why? Because the ECU football coach has apparently convinced the ECU chancellor that, without the night in the hotel room, his players might morph into absolute morons.

I present this statement as open season to all for some jokes. Enjoy.

  26. Ry_ATO

The night in the hotel together for the home team is pretty common practice.

  27. Dan

    August 27, 2009 at 4:32 pm

yeah, the article he wrote was pretty illuminating about it, no effing wonder so many of these guys are losing money.

    August 28, 2009 at 1:25 am

To REALITYCHECK, this particular preseason poll is based on the Sagarin Ratings, right? The same computer generated model that picks YOUR National Champ, right? We decide ours on the field, as this game shall also be decided. I think some of that Kentucky BlueGrass is still stuck in your facemask from the Bowl Kicking the 'Cats put on the swishbucklers last season.

    August 28, 2009 at 3:30 am

I don't think it matters if the ECU team stays at the Ritz Carlton or in a tent village, we're going to Greenville to kick some ass!! Let's go Mountaineers. Fans- get your asses to Greenville to support the team.

"I've always told you if you party hard and cheer hard for the mountaineers, I'll pick your ass up off the field when you pass out."

  31. Jamey

    August 28, 2009 at 5:19 am

Greenville is getting BLACKED OUT beeatttches!

That's so cute that the purple pirates all snuggle in their hotel rooms the night before games. Does Coach Holtz read them all a bedtime story about when Daddy Lou still had a functioning brain and knew how to coach?

  32. asu7

    August 28, 2009 at 5:28 am

I will be with you APPFANTOO … we will be gating in that area as well with some EZU alums … I was told I could not bring my tent but I could bring my flags … If you see a ugly colored tent with some black and gold App flags then that will be me! Right there in the middle of the enemy!

Ready to attack some purple loving pyrates …

  33. Dan

    August 28, 2009 at 5:44 am

Wow Jamey, props for you wearing black down there, i was going to go with a lighter color due to heat, but you're making me re-think that.

  34. DRM

    August 28, 2009 at 5:48 am

If ASU sequestered the team in a hotel (or somewhere) before home games, there'd be no concerns such as those rumors (facts?) about some members of the team partying before the Richmond game last year.

Regarding the budget woes–NCAA is reportedly considering legislation (proposed by the PAC 10, I believe) that would outlaw the practice of housing teams in hotels the night before a home game. If I were a coach, I would be adamantly opposed to such a change.

  35. Geoff

    August 28, 2009 at 6:10 am

We will be in Greenville Friday night as well. we are staying at the Quality Inn- Greenville (on South Memorial Drive) so if there are any interesting areas with cold beverages within walking distance to that hotel…that's where we shall be!

  36. Geoff

    August 28, 2009 at 6:12 am

Oh yeah…i think preseason polls are about as important as preseason games except without the benefit of seeing how your starters look this year (for the first 2 possessions).

    August 28, 2009 at 10:50 am

ECU is a much better team and App. State is going to lose. Your not a D-1 school, ECU is, and the pirates are going to embarrass the mountaineers.

  38. Dan

    August 28, 2009 at 10:57 am

Actually, we are D-1 and your assessment of the game i think illustrates your overall lack of knowledge about football. Are the odds in favor of ECU winning? Yes, absolutely. Embarrassment? That's a bit of a stretch.

Armanti Edwards has done more in NCAA football in 3 years than Pinckney has in his entire 6 year career. Has he at least tacked on that Dr. Pinckney title since he was basically enrolled when ECU was founded?

Pinckney and Skippy Holtz are still having delusions of grandeur about actually having some shot at national prominence. Meanwhile, Appalachian State has had more national press in the past 5 years than any other program in North Carolina. "We beat West Virginia and Virginia Tech!" Yeah…then you choked on it and blew your shot at making some waves in college football.

Not that physical presence means everything, however…………
    ECU avg. Offensive line 310lb
    ECU avg. Defensive line 296lb

ASU has one 300lb guy on the entire team.
Take note….ECU will gradually wear down ASU throughout the game.
    Easy win for Pirates!!

  62. Pete

    August 30, 2009 at 7:46 am

Hate to look back, when this game is less than a week away but….
Michigan was bigger than ECU on both sides of the ball. Eight (8) Michigan players were taken in the NFL draft….including the overall #1 pick Jake Long. Chad Hene was a 4year starter all Big Ten, All American. Mike Hart was all Big Ten , All American and so was Long. Point being ECU may win the Game, But APP State will come to play…

I love it! I am just ready for the season to begin. I love college football..period. This will be a good game and good job for ECU to put this game on the schedule. Looks good for them to accept the challenges that they constantly go after themselves with bigger programs. I am calling…
    IF THE AMANTI PLAYS..
    ECU 31
    APP 24
    IF NO AMANTI
    ECU 34
    APP 14

Let the game decide the outcome and the better team. You guys just be there and support your sides 🙂

This is a great match-up, i am ready to go to Greenville right now! Respect to ECU for scheduling ASU and i hope this could potentially be the start of great in-state rivalry. With the renovations to The Rock maybe ECU will come up to Boone in the future too.

    prediction:

    APP 31
    ECU 30

    See y'all in Greenville!

  73. piratefan09

bottomline: if we play to our potential app wont score

  74. Dan

    August 31, 2009 at 2:25 pm

if that's the case, ECU doesn't play to its potential a whole lot, esp. not against State.

  75. appnaysayer

    August 31, 2009 at 2:27 pm

1975: In no particular order: Wake goes down on a field goal with 17 ticks left; South Carolina falls to the Apps in Columbia. New turf at Conrad; ECU's blood all over it and another Mountaineer win.

2009: Hoping for a healthy Armanti and a defense that can shut down ECU's running game. If so….we might, as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, "step twice into the same river." Of course around Greenville it would be polluted with hog waste, but just the same….Sorry, that's all I got. In the words of the immortal James K. Flynn (for all you 70s grads), "Give 'em hell Apps!"

AppSt is a 3 time Natl Champ. They know the big game. ECU has got the Big Head with Conference Champ '08. Neither team has good film. ASU dont fumble. IF ECU does they'll be run out of their own stadium.

Hey there App fans!!! Hoping everyone is sinching up the final pre-trip details and getting ready to party with the Pirates. 🙂 The best place to go is a newly renovated bar called Tavern on 4th. It is a 21 and older bar (smoke free) no idiots and very clean with great beer specials. Check it out. The owner is Judd Crumpler and he is an Ace!!! http://www.myspace.com/tavernon4th
Looks to be great weather (Zip code for Greenville is 27858 in case you want to check on the temp for game day)
Don't forget to go to Cubbie's for one of the best cheesesteaks and hush puppie baskets money can buy. It's a tradition 🙂
Be safe and we will see you guys soon..

PF09, LSU doesn't even beat App by 50, and the only similarity between ECU and LSU is that god-awful color your team wears.

hey crzyfrnk- speed does kill! and that Michigan team did have big guys. However, ECU is big and fast. When all is said and done, this ECU team will be better than the Michigan team Appy played. If you go to the game keep an eye on #17!
You will probably be surprised at the speed of ECU. I do believe it will be a great exciting game, but ECU runs away in the end. Good luck!

The list of assumptions for Jeff Sagarin's NCAA football ratings must be ridiculous! App better bring their A-game SAT! Hope you all have a safe trip and a great time in Greenville. Who is ready for some college football? Fire up the BBQ, pop-a-top, and watch your team play Sat. Best time of the year!
