ECU prepares to play App by pretending App is ECU

FOUR DAYS!Head Pirate Skip Holtz had his weekly press conference yesterday. And it was all about gettin’ ready for some App State.

The highlights – This game is “overdue.” It’s a great “rivalry” game. He expects Armanti to play. The offense will be “explosive.” Jacque Roman and D.J. Smith are beasts.

Oh, and he knows what App State is thinking, cause his Pirates have often thought those same thinks.

On Appalachian State’s Mindset About Playing East Carolina
“I’m sure they look at it as an opportunity to make some waves. This is a huge bragging rights game.

“I look at it as very similar to when we go to North Carolina and N.C. State with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder. We’re trying to prove that we’re on a competitive playing field with UNC or N.C. State and that makes your players dig a little bit deeper. I think App. State is going to come in here with that very same mindset.

“We’re trying to prepare our team for that and utilize that same analogy. We’re trying to get our team to understand how had Appalachian State is going to play.

Well okay then. We’re thinking like Pirates.

Any word / pictures regarding Edwards playing status. Feels like App fans are in a "Black Out Period" whereas nobody is talking. Folks are not talking & the rumor mill and uncertainity has taken over. Got to believe someone has seen him down on the practice field or walking (hopefully) on campus to classses

I actually saw him walking down rivers street today as I was driving home. Still has a bit of a limp, but nothing too bad. I expect the guy to play. There's no way he'll be at full speed though.

GOASU reported that he was back at practice yesterday. I still think he will be very limited Saturday.

If AE isn't full speed I'd rather let DP and TC play. I don't want another Richmond type offensive game.

There's no way AE is sitting this one out. Everyone is making this injury out to be like broken bones or torn muscles. Granted, it was a pretty serious cut..he'll be fine and play.

My daughter saw AE on campus last Thursday. Still on crutches. Though I'll be dissapointed if he doesn't play he shouldn't if he's not 100%. ECU will pound him if he's at 80% and we need him in top shape for the rest of the season. IMO no need to risk further injury in Greenville.

Graham Norton's (ESPN) take on the game:

    4. Appalachian State at East Carolina: East Carolina shocked the world with back-to-back wins over ranked teams to start last season. While Appalachian State is an FCS team, it’s the best FCS team in the country with three national titles in the past four seasons. If ECU wants to be the first C-USA team to bust the BCS, it can’t overlook the Mountaineers.

AE will not play, it is time for DP to step up to the plate and show us all what he has. Beating up on WCU and Wofford is great, but its his time to prove to us all he can take the torch from AE and run with it. What a way to start.

Coach Holtz is absolutely correct about the similarities to ECU's attitude towards State & UNC.

It's not a rivalry game in the sense that it's a game that'll be played on a regular basis. The teams aren't even going after the same prize, as conference rivals do or contenders for a championship do. But it most definitely is about bragging rights, and that's as big a deal as any. High Country vs. farm country. Black & Gold vs. yet another purple team. West vs. East.

Until there is an announcement from Charlie Cobb himself, I'm assuming there won't be an annual series against ECU any time soon, and that's a shame. ECU would be a much more suitable rival than our supposed rivalry with Western. This game would involve more fans from all over the state, not just App fans plus a handful of Catamount fans way out in Sylva. Oh well. Let's hope it's a W on Saturday.

For the same reasons Wake refused to renew the series with ASU, ECU won't consider an annual series with App–the FBS school has more to lose than to gain by playing a strong FCS team. That's why UNC, Florida, FSU and others schedule teams like McNeese, Charleston Southern, and Chattanooga when they want/need an FCS opponent.

Just thought, what key players on the team are from the eastern part of the state?

Props to ol' Skip. I thought he spoke well of a worthy App team. But that still doesn't change my mindset in wanting to stomp them and all their being.
