It’s official – DeAndre is DeStarter

Can he do it?Coach Moore said so yesterday – ““I have very high confidence in him,” Edwards said of Presley. “He played in a lot of games last year, so it’s not like we’re just throwing him in the fire.” It was unclear whether Edwards would suit up on Saturday. He was at practice on Wednesday but did not take any snaps.”

    Deandre deserves to start, period.

However, I still think its possible for us to see Armanti before the game is over. JMHO.

I would not be shocked to see AE in street clothes to avoid the temptation to throw him in. I think that not taking snaps at practice proves he is not ready to play yet. Put him in a t-shirt and trust Deandre to get the job done.

    September 3, 2009 at 7:02 am

DP will be fine. This is best in the big picture. Championships are more important beating a mid level FBS opponent. That being said I think this will still be just as good a game as if AE was in there in the shotgun (since he never seems to be under center). I think DP gives us the best chance to win Saturday. I am also sure that he has know for awhile that he would start.

i think DP can lead us to a win. This game will be closer than people think. if we lose, it wont be by the 50 the butt pirates say, but maybe 10 max. i dont have any worries about DP, just about the lines. if our lines can make plays we are in good shape.

Its time to move on with DP for the next 3-4 weeks.
He will get it done….Hopefully we have someone mowing his grass too.

  12. Andrea

    September 3, 2009 at 7:03 am

I think he should be suited up even if the staff knows he won't go in at all…just to keep ECU thinking and nervous.

  13. Johnathan

    September 3, 2009 at 7:08 am

This sucks, dont get me wrong I think DP is very capable, but he doesnt bring to the table what AE does. A win against ECU could help us push harder for moving up to FBS. I know that it would not help us much in achieving our goal of winning another national championship, but the bragging rights would be nice.

  16. Jamey

    September 3, 2009 at 7:19 am

Guess what Jacque Roman is having for lunch Saturday: PINCKNEY!

Deandre Presley is gonna roll into ECU with a "my time to shine" attitude and a cannon for a right arm. Purple and Gold are gonna be replaced by the familiar colors of BLACK & BLUE. Coco Hilary and Brian Quick are gonna put on a clinic at the WR position. And our running backs are gonna look like the 4 x 100 Olympic Relay team breaking off 25 yard dashes. FOOTBALL AT LAST, FOOTBALL AT LAST….GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY APPALACHIAN STATE IS GONNA WHIP SOME ASS!

I am RELIEVED that Armanti is not starting and I have TOTAL CONFIDENCE in DeAndre! I hope Travaris gets in there, too. I think ECU is in for a shock! THEY CANNOT PREPARE FOR THE UNKNOWN! GO APPS!!!!

    September 3, 2009 at 7:31 am

no offense Johnathan, but i dont want us to move up to the FBS. we are very successful here and if we moved up it would be to a crap conference and we would have no shot at anything but a minor bowl game. its the same kind of thing that happened to ECU, Marshall and Utah that have no shot at a title.

App State v. Michigan- Dexter Jackson blows up the Michigan defense wearing #2.

App State v. ECU- Deandre Presley WILL blow up the ECU defense wearing #2.

  24. Jamey

    September 3, 2009 at 7:50 am

clayton- As the offensive coordinator of the team, I feel I should pass along some information that may assist you in gameplanning. Pirates wear an eyepatch on one eye. If we could get the entire offense to run towards the eye with the patch, then our running backs could disappear into their eyepatch blindspot. Hence, WE WIN!

    What's that you say…baller?

  25. Steve Class of 76

    September 3, 2009 at 7:54 am

I'm going to go ahead and say this now; If we lose I don't want to hear "If AE hadn't been hurt we would have won". This has panned out just as I had predicted. Deandre will be fine, plus we have good backup in Travarias. Win or lose, think how the rest of the season will go with three top quality QBs. Prediction: Apps 35, ECU 24.

  26. Mike

    September 3, 2009 at 7:55 am

you play the game to win. I can't believe there is the thought of 'saving' AE for a later date by our coaching staff. At this time DP is the best man for the job. If that wasn't true AE would be named starter. As AE heals a decision will be made after each Wednesday practice of who is the best man and someone will get the nod. That said, I think AE will dress and if he is needed to win will play. Also hope he recovers quickly because, damn, that kid can play ball.

  27. Tater

    September 3, 2009 at 8:07 am

I am relieved to see that DP will be starting for us against ECU. This is not the game to have our start QB playing at 75% in a situation where he could aggravate his current injury or develop new ones. I think DP is more than capabale of running this offense. he proved it last year, and I like the thought of our QB of the future getting a chance to show what he's got on a big stage. He has been preparing as the starter for a month now, and he is the right guy to lead us to our first victory of 2009! As has been said over and over again, let us focus on what is important… and SoCon championship and an FCS national title, not a victory over some mid-level BCS team.

BTW, we should totally make Armanti suit up with no intention of playing him, and let him take all pregame snaps with the first team offense to really mess with ECU coaching heads.

    Finally…

    APP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!….

  28. brian

Anyone having Richie Williams Flashbacks vs NIU?

    Hummm…
ECU 21 ASU 17 and half… both teams take the field to start the 2nd half. "BUT WAIT" who is that guy trotting onto the field… #14 ARMANTI EDWARDS, "are you kidding me". The ASU faithful go wild… ASU wins by 10, and the rest is history.

Not saying its going to happen, but these are the stories of LEGENDS!

  30. Steve Class of 76

    September 3, 2009 at 8:20 am

BTW, the weather should not be a factor this year. Remember last year at LSU we were distracted by a hurricane (what was the name?) and raced to get the game in early in the heat and humidity. It also cost us national coverage on ESPN that afternoon. Greenville should be dry and relatively cool.

  31. Right Said Fred

    September 3, 2009 at 8:28 am

The beautiful thing about playing DP is no one knows what to expect – especially the Pirates. I expect we've been working on this ECU game plan the way we worked on UM – There is nothing good about AE being out, but at least he gave our coaches and players a month to prepare for this scenario.

  32. Steve Class of 76

    September 3, 2009 at 8:32 am

I don't think it will matter to ECU who starts because our offence will be the same no matter what. DP will do the same things AE would do, just not as well. No surprises for ECU.

  33. Rob

    September 3, 2009 at 8:38 am

Bright side is DP gets more game experience. If the playoffs come around and we get in a situation like Richmond last year and Armanti is banged up we now have a sophomore QB who has been in a game against a big time opponent (Big time meaning an opponent other than Western Carolina). We will only be a stronger team with DeAndre playing and we still have a good shot of winning. BUT DAMN I'D LOVE TO SEE ARMANTI PICK APART THE PIRATES 🙁

  34. Right Said Fred

    September 3, 2009 at 8:39 am

Possibly, but DP has his own set of strengths. I imagine there are a couple plays drawn up specifically to cater to his strong points. At least one would hope we don't have a one-size-fits-all caliber coaching staff.

  35. random dude

    September 3, 2009 at 8:45 am

Please guys quit refering to Deandre Presley as DP. I keep thinking 'Double Penetration". Do we want our 2nd string QB/future started with a DP nickname. I think not

  36. Steve Class of 76

    September 3, 2009 at 8:47 am

The important thing is, we're damned fortunate we have such a quality backup as DP. And we're also "lucky" AE got hurt before fall practice. Say if it had happened last week then there would have been little time to dial in DP. I think he's known he was the starter all along. I say he gets us a win!

  37. Dan

It would have been really cool for AE to have been 100% ready coming into this week. Imagine the swell of confidence from the team and fan base. AE is a difference maker. They come along once in a generation. A true difference maker. IMHO, he is somewhere between 14 and 17 pts worth of difference. It will take a bunch of turnovers, say like us vs Richmond, for us to have a chance to win. Our D will have to play near perfect. I just don't see us putting a lot of points on the board with a kid QB, and that's what he is, playing behind a suspect O-Line against a team with a great defensive front.
I'm going to be there, raisin hell from APP, but I'm going to be real about it as well.

  49. random dude

    September 3, 2009 at 10:22 am

    September 3, 2009 at 10:26 am

This was all but a foregone conclusion from the time of Armanti's accident. My guess is he's questionable for the McNeese game as well. If so (and I'll repeat that this is just a guess), then you're into some questions that no one likes to think about…..

    September 3, 2009 at 10:31 am

    Dude
that's what I mean by a once in a generation type player. DP is, I'm sure going to be a fine QB. But, my guess is he is going to be a fine back up who happened to start in spots, throughout his career. I don't think he will be the starter next year. He just has the advantage of a year under his belt in the system. Don't be suprised if he doesn't finish the game.

On the eve of the game, it's important to remember what St. Jerry of the Sacred Rock said right after Armanti's injury. I'm paraphrasing, but the gist was "the team is much more than Armanti." If we block and tackle, I like our chances with DP.

DeAndre and Brian Quick are in my American Lit class and they are both ready. Pressley has a lot of confidence and Quick says the offense is used to him and feel good about him starting. I can't believe a couple of " App fans" posted on 9/3 about the lawnmower incident. I guess it happened about 4-6 weeks ago when I read this in the paper. Wow! Did you hear the Favre is playing for the Vikings…Michael Jackson passed away, Obama is President, jobless rate is high, recession, been to moon, Iraq war, healthcare reform, slanket, sham-wow…you been in a cave?
