I'm not willing to drop over $100 on a ticket to go to this game, so I'll be watching at my parents place in Raleigh and then heading over to watch The Citadel get stomped by UNC later. Go Apps!

I'm grinning, but I cannot bear it.

This game will be closer than that and if your kicking situation is what I think it is, scoring for ECU may turn into an advantage for ASU……..

Lets teach ECU how to spell MICHIGAN
    (thats MISS-U-CAN).

  14. Bones

    September 4, 2009 at 7:33 pm

Also, Ron and let me guess you beat Michigan…blah, blah. Focus on the now and not the past. Get the ice and ambulances ready for the beat down tomorrow. Our D-backs out-weigh your O-line so get ready to feel the pain in G-Vegas. Pitt Memorial Hospital will provide excellent care to your boys and visitors are welcome.

We have the talent to play with ECU and many of our players know it…unfortunantly some don't because they haven't been there. If we can have some offensive success early and DP can get some confidence we've got a real shot. ECU is much deeper than we are, but I think our starters are very similar to their starters talent wise.

I'm so glad football season has arrived!!! It's Good to be a Mountaineer!!!!!! GO APP!!!

  16. Bones

    September 4, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Let's teach mtdrago about the use of an apostrophe.

  17. Ron

    September 4, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Bones, I never said a thing about Michigan. I agree though, that was in the past. As far as NOW goes , the best d-backs in the game will NOT be wearing purple. LeGree and Gilbert would start for ECU. As far as your "big old lineman" go. If they were really that good do you think for a minute they would be playing for ECU ? You may be a 1-A BCS team. But your a LOWER-LOWER-LOWER LEVEL BCS team. You may say you would rather be that than a FCS team and that argument has some merrit. ECU will have a very good team this year and you may win big Sat. But win big Saturday and win C-USA and all you get is some crappy bowl game with NO chance for a Nat. Championship. We may be a 1-AA program but at least we have had the joy of lifting that National Championship trophy. As of NOW the only difference between ECU and ASU is 20 Scollys. I hope one day you can say your team is National Champs, But stay in C-USA and that will NEVER happen. You are the same as the University of Hawaii, youll have a good season now and then, go through many coaches as they leave for better programs, and watch us rush the field after another National Championship. We know our place in the pecking order. Its time ECU woke up and learned theirs.

  18. Ron

    September 4, 2009 at 8:38 pm

One more things Bones, If you do win Saturday I will be the first one to pat you on the back and say great game.

  19. Bones

    September 4, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Agreed, when you get your "20 Scollys" come on up and win the national title, it's just that easy in NCAA football. Maybe our great O-linemen would rather play for WVU or VT but I'm sure they have no regrets with Holtz. Good luck. BTW ECU signs top recruits regularly. Any bowl makes money so we take what we get.

  20. Ron

    September 4, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Agreed Bones, Good luck Saturday ( but not too much ) and I hope you beat VT and UNC. That would be great for football in the state.

Villanova's line was outweighed by an avg. of 50 lbs a man, and they still somehow were able to beat Temple.

  25. Hamilton

    September 5, 2009 at 3:48 am

For the last time, teams are not BCS, conferences are.

Division 1 Football is broken down as follows FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision).

Just because you are FBS doesn't mean you are in a BCS conference. There are six BCS conferences that receive automatic bids, ECU's conference (CUSA) doesn't receive automatic bids to BCS games in the post season

  26. appnaysayer

    September 5, 2009 at 3:52 am

We're always outweighed, outmanned, and outgunned. And this time, our ace QB is on the sidelines. So what? Just means we've got ECU right where we want 'em. I think it was Clarence Darrow who said, "Lost causes are the only ones worth fighting for…." Give 'em hell Apps.

  27. Right Said Fred

    September 5, 2009 at 4:17 am

Damn, appnaysayer. Whippin' out the Clarence Darrow, who ironically went to (none other than) UM! Nice post.

Here's to a good game – and fans that hopefully show some class. I'm concerned that once the beer gets swilling, these two fan bases may tangle.

    Glad it's an early game.

It's great to be a Mountaineer. Kick Apps!

  31. appnaysayer

    September 5, 2009 at 6:08 am

Fred, you are the man….Darrow did indeed go to law school at UM…wondered if anyone would get the reference. I stand in awe at the intellectual level of discourse among App alumni and fans. (Meanwhile Bones and the other PIrates are thinking, "Who's Clarence Darrow? Some App Offensive Coordinator?" Didn't he go to Toledo last year?")

ECU students and fans have a long and checkered history of fighting after games…ask NCSU…or any App alum old enough to remember the 70s…and we have a reputation for rowdiness. Let us indeed hope the twain do not meet. One sucker punch per weekend is enough. I'll be one of the Three-Peat Nation watching on the tube and, win or lose, remembering a special Labor Day Saturday two years ago when I thought the roof might come off of Legends. BELIEVE!

  32. hapapp

    September 5, 2009 at 6:23 am

Jimmy Stewart also utters that line in Mr. Smith goes to Washington.

I truly believe this game turns on our defense's ability to keep us in the game. I'm not sure we will be able to generate much offense against this stout ECU defense. If we can play some D, then I think we can make a game of it, if not, I fear a 3 TD defeat.

  33. appnaysayer

    September 5, 2009 at 6:43 am

Right again….and I couldn't agree more. This, like most games, will be decided on the line of scrimmage. Can we run? Can we stop the run? Last year, both of those were problem areas for us. We should get some indicators early on…here's hoping I have to cancel my afternoon tee time.

OK, so we are definetly missing AE, BUT…

At least we found our next QB for 2010 and 2011. Cadet probably should have started but I guess Coach Moore decided to go with DP because he had more experience running our system. This game went from a real downer to a near miracle comeback.

All I can say is…I believe if Armanti plays…ECU 0-1! Your guys showed us how to win. There's a difference in a winning program's players. Cadet is your future QB, that guy is good. Congrats to App State! I hope yall play many more D1 teams…Yall are good!

  89. appnaysayer

    September 5, 2009 at 12:12 pm

Couldn't be prouder of the team…complete change of heart here…go big-time ASAP. Put 50K seats in Kidd Brewer. Kidding…..

Were we just waiting for the TV coverage to start playing? And ECU? Can you say "out of shape? Purple guys were dropping like flies. We looked like we'd been the ones working out in 90-degree heat. Buck up there, Bones. If your team continues at this pace, you can look forward to a thrilling trip to the Humanitarian Bowl. And Skippy? If he coached at all in the second half, I missed it. No adjustments at all, thank goodness.

On the downside, okay, we lost; there were some costly penalties and bad snaps, I quarrel with the use of the timeouts, and the play-calling was, at times, amateurish (especially in the first half and why pray tell didn't we take a shot deep with Quick on the last series with the ball near mid-field? Cadet's arm?)

But wow, the guys gave us a thrill, eh? Made me miss my tee time, but I don't care.

P.S. A guy from Alabama's team got shot on Monday and was "medically cleared" to play today. Now that's what I call big time football. Coach said he'd learned "quite a bit about gunshot wounds." Doh.

  90. hapapp

    September 5, 2009 at 12:18 pm

Cadet and Apps gave us a lot to be proud of today. That missed FG and safety were huge.

I was glad to see him get a chance and he was certainly exciting. Given the circumstances, he was the perfect antidote for what ECU was doing to us. I'm not certain if he starts he provides the same result. Of course, we'll never know.

  91. panthers04

    September 5, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Just watched game, really had no interest, but you guys were a lot better coached and conditioned even if it was vs. What looked like third string for much of the second half, remind me which team had trained all summer in the heat and humidity. Cadet is a player, where did he come from?

  92. piratelifeftw

    September 5, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Yeah valiant effort there in the second half and all that. But the Pirates whipped the Mountaineer's asses all over the field in the first half, looked like a high school team trying to get organized. No excuses for you guys, Pinkney almost threw the game away for ECU and App ran out of steam in the end. Cadet was impressive to an extent but the amount of time that the ECU defense was on the field during the second half can explain that, as well as all of the cramping and injuries. Good game though, was a scorcher but the turn around made it worth watching at least.

  93. Flashman

    September 5, 2009 at 1:18 pm

I figured it wouldn't be long before a classless ECU fan would come on here and flap his jaw. Go back to your bong and your bottle of Thunderbird, piratelifeftw, and remember that you're still ECU and you'll always be nothing. Nothing at all.

  94. appirishmen

    September 5, 2009 at 1:23 pm

we just came out flat. ecu weasnt conditioned very well. i mean we had nothing to lose but go for it all. we showed ecu what we could really do in the 4th. great game. best of luck to ecu the rest of the season. and piratelifeftw…..the time ecus d was on the field showed just how poorly conditioned they were. if we played our game for the full game it would have turned out differently. i dont know if they let up..or if ecu was just caught off guard. great game!!!! i cant wait for this weekend!!

  95. hapapp

    September 5, 2009 at 1:37 pm

The object of the game is to win. Congrats to ECU they did what it took to win…barely. ASU failed to take care of the things they needed to, especially in the first half. In clearly was a game of two halves.

The reason the ECU defense was on the field for so much time in the second half was the same reason ASU was in the first half. Your defense had difficulty stopping our offense, thus they were on the field for so much time.

  96. Michael

    September 5, 2009 at 1:42 pm

    Dear ECU,

How about a rematch in Boone? You're guaranteed not to face Armanti Edwards. You can have the money that we paid you to play us back, and we'll throw in thousands more. Heck, we can make it an annual series, which is something NCSU and UNC won't offer you. Obviously, we're a quality opponent: You can ask your own players, or you can ask NFL #1 draft pick Jake Long, Mike Hart, Chad Henne, or anyone else from Michigan's '07 team that defeated Tim Tebow and the Gators in their bowl game. They'll tell you that we're a worthy opponent.

    Sincerely,

    Wishful-Thinker

  97. Mountainqueer

    September 5, 2009 at 1:50 pm

ECU isnt scared of APP…Honestly if we were why would we schedule you? We had absolutely nothing to gain and alot to lose. You guys have a good team but its not like thats something you showed today (we already knew it would be close) typical ecu to let yall back in.

but honestly you guys need to cut the excuses and quit saying your better. if we played ten times i say you might beat us two or three times. (no offense intended) I believe you guy have alot going for you but why is all this trash talk towards us? honestly weve been in the same situation you have for many years now. always looked down upon by bigger schools. we took a risk and played a game we didnt have to. anyways good game guys i will cheer for yall the rest of the way, as i hope you would do for us..

  98. Michael

    September 5, 2009 at 1:51 pm

App State doesn't need to make any excuses, because there's nothing they need to be excused from; FCS team are never supposed to win these games, nor, given the difference in depth, are they supposed to come close. ECU's the team that needs to be making excuses.

  99. Shane

mountainqueer….what excuses. i say good game to ecu this season and i wish the best for your program. ive never heard that we were better. to be all honest yall should be much better b/c of the scholarships and depth differences. i like your coach. but you come onto an app board and start this queer crap? we came out flat in the first. thats not our team. our team is the one that came out in to 2nd half. im pulling for ecu in the cusa and thank you for cheering us on the rest of the season.

I would agree if we played 10 times ECU would win the majority.

Apps fans, we need to be proud of our effort today. But lets refrain from smack talk. We lost, no matter how well we played in the 2nd half. We don't know if things would have been different with AE playing, so it's pointless to argue that. Let's take the result and move on.

yep ill admit i talk trash but only in defense. when i read how app fans say ecu sucks so on so on i talk back but truth be told i dont care to talk smack because i know what it feels like to be looked down on . honestly we face the same thing year in and out with State/UNC and other big schools. i just dont understand why app fans come at ecu like were so bad. we didnt even have to risk playing you.. hell ncst and unc wouldnt have. like i said good game and i wish yall the best of luck and hopefully we both gained some mutual respect on both sides

anyways good luck for the rest of yalls season and we could always use the support in the western portion of the state.. much respect

I agree that there is some work to be done on both sides of the ball. But, there should be some positives that has come out of this game.Another QB that is a baller and the fact that there is NO QUIT in this team. AND this being the first game of the season,I'm getting goose bumps just thinking of what the rest of the season holds.
As for ECU, the TARHEELS will get revenge for us in few weeks.

The viewing party I was at in Winston had a lot of App fans and alumni. I was proud that almost everyone stayed after halftime. The few who left early missed a great 2nd half. If I had left early and App had won, I'd be ashamed of myself

ECU had the most classless fans I have ever met. Cussing with babies in your arms, taunting me as I went with my brother (WHO GOES TO ECU) to his dorm. Saying that us coming back meant nothing cause we still lost. HELLO – let's see the big picture.

I was proud of our boys and our fans for sticking with them and I'm looking forward to a great season of Mountaineer football.

PLEASE, lets not start the "classless" crying. The losing team always whines about how the players, or the fans, or burger king on the respective campus is "classless". The fact is, EVERY team in NCAA, NFL, NHL, Maryland High School Lacross and the Boyer County Cricket Association have a couple classless fans or players. There are idiots everywhere, get over it. Oh, and go apps! Great game today boys, you made all Mountaineers proud. And kudos to ECU for giving us a shot, good luck on your season!

Yeah I usually don't complain about no class or anything cause I know I'm not the most classy winner all the time, it just seemed like the overwhelming majority were and it rubbed me the wrong way.

However, there were many, many great people who told me good game or glad it's not a five period game. Sorry to come off as a sore loser, I'm anything but.

you guys got a good team.. dont let it get to your head though.. we played conservative at the beginning of the second half then you guys made a run at the end. after that we obviously didnt want to do anything stupid to lose the game so we continued to play conservatively. this is not to say you dont deserve credit for not quiting, because you do.

Truthfully i think we learned a good lesson that the games not over til its over. And i think it built some confidence for yall..

anyhow good luck and go out and make some 1-aa noise.

Maybe that is true to an extent. But I think App stepped up to the plate in the second half. It was obvious ECU didn't have an answer for Cadet until the final hurry up drive. As for playing conservatively, not sure why you'd play that way against our 3rd string QB at the beginning of the 3rd. There's a lot of game left to play. Plus App was simply the better conditioned team in this game. But overall, great game, it was closer than many expected. Anyways good luck the rest of the way, especially against UNC

Just got back from the game – have to say that this was one of the better away games when it comes to the home fans. I've been to see App play @ NCSU, Wake, Auburn, SC, Michigan, Wyoming, Marshall, and more. We were treated well, but we also weren't drinking (had 2 kids with me) and were respectful of our hosts.

Well you havent understand our defense was on the field for just over 20 of the 30 minutes in the second half. Im sure the defense was winded some but we also had alot of players coming out from cramps, which is more of a hydration thing. However I do agree that you guys stepped it up.

If you noticed all 17 points came in the fourth once the D had been on the field a while. Our defense has to get off the field more often on third down.

credit where its due though yall faught til the end. good game

    credit where it

Bottom line: ECU had all they wanted and more from us. All you had to do was look at the dazed and confused students wearing purple as the cameras panned the stands in the last quarter. The more the ECU co-eds sobered up, the more frown lines they got. Thought that one kid was going to gnaw right through her lower lip.

And I'll say again, if that's what passes for coaching and conditioning on Skippy's watch, then ECU's in trouble. True a win is a win is a win; got to give you that, Congratulations. But against an FCS team with its 3d string qb, well, if ASU had a highly publicized defense that gave up 17 points in the last quarter and a half with the game on the line, I'd be worried. But then I, like most ASU fans, know something about football.

to bad we were playing not to lose and not playing to win… not to take all the credit i mean we were still out on the field but i think we just got comfortable. And as far as conditioning you guys had the ball over 20 minutes in the heat of the day. The main problem we faced was cramps. The spread option you guys run is particularly hard to defend and wears teams down. but Im just an ecu fan that knows nothing about football i know..

well app cant spell any bowl bc they arent going to one. this was your bowl game and its over. look im not one to argue but if your picking a fight so be it.

and if apps defense was on the field 21 minutes they would be tired too.

Hold on, hold on, hold on… What's the deal with the ECU peeps p#$$#n and moanin' all these excuses over on our page here. You won. Accept it and be happy. Congratulations. Wasn't the way you wanted? What, are you worried about all the Heel and Pack fans giving you crap for letting the Appys almost steal one? Remember, the Heels have done nothing yet and the Pack, well they're still the Pack… Anyway, drop the junk with you playing your second string players. Skip isn’t that stupid. After all, he's interviewing for his next job every Saturday this fall. Oh, and one more thing. If the cramps were going to be such a problem, you should have scheduled the game for a different time of the month……..

ECU played their first teamers the entire game, check Skip's comments in every article around the state today. He stated that there was such a big drop from the first team to the second team that he had to keep the first team in there. ECU played great the first 25 minutes and hats off to them. I hope they win the CUSA this year.

Before the season started many ECU fans stated this could be their best team ever due to the talent and experience coming back. ASU held their own and then some the last 35 minutes of the game. I hope both fan bases enjoyed the game and look forward to seeing this game on future schedules.

It's a little early to judge either team from just one game. They both played well-ECU in the first half and APP in the second. No sense in saying what if we had more time or Armanti, or ECU had no cramps and CJ Wilson in, and the defense didn't have to be on the field so long.
It was what it was, a good game between two good teams that will hopefully meet again. Having been to games at many stadiums in NC, I can say Greenville is one of my favorites, the atmosphere is always great and never a problem with fans.

Thanks to Skip and Terry Holland for playing us.The University of No Class(football office) would not return phone calls from the ASU athletic department requesting a game. Good luck to ECU the remainder of the season. Go kick some Tarhole tail in a couple of weeks.
