Ha! Ha! Stink sucksThe CAA continues playing BOO! with the *cough**cough* “BCS” ACC. As did .. /double take .. Jacksonville State?? In the SoCon, Furman won the season’s first SoCon game easily against ‘Nooga. The Stink, well, stinks. And, of course, the ‘Whee lost.

I was pretty bummed (who wasn't) Saturday evening until I saw where GA Southern got punked, and watched JMU lose. Helped the demeanor a little.

I just skimmed the entire SoCon schedule. Did anyone know that there only three games all season between SoCon squads and teams from auto-qualifying conferences?

Two of those games have already been played, both losses: App to McNeese, and Ga. Southern to S. Dakota State. The other game is WCU vs. Eastern Kentucky, so ought to make the SoCon 0-3.

Fortunately, the league has the playoffs to give a bit of a better measure of its strength. Three matchups all season just isn't enough.

It's too bad there aren't more inter-conference matchups. Makes it hard for anyone but absolute die-hards to have a good understanding get an accurate idea of who's really good in the FCS, nationwide. At the same time, as much as I hate to say this, you gotta give it up to the CAA for its success against the FBS, especially the ACC (Ugh!).

(BTW, the autobid conferences are the SoCon, CAA, OVC, Big Sky, Southland, MEAC, Missouri Valley, and Patriot League. The Big South and NEC will gain autobids NEXT year. NC Central isn't in the MEAC yet.)

This is part of some of the good news. Other SoCon teams aren't looking overly strong (Elon is again lower competition, but we'll see vs WFU this week). Furman and Woff are question marks still probably, but Woff injuries probably aren't helping them.

Wow waiting 2 weeks on 3 losses in a row hurts a lot.

I believe Samford is going to be a huge test for us. If we lay an egg vs. sammy then things are going to get really bad for us. I do not see a team with more than 3 losses getting an at large to the playoffs. We have one loss to give and that will just get is in barely. We have got to win the SoCon and it is not going to be easy. We have road games at furple, elcid, waffle house and eloan. The stink plays us tough no matter what so we gotta buckle down. I am worried about Samford more than anything right now because it is the next game on the schedule.

I just want to see my APPs win a game.

I just want to apologize to everyone for the loss Saturday. My wife and I forgot our Back-In-Black CD and therefore could not go through the traditional pre-game ritual. We take full responsibility for our actions.

Many traditions were changed/not done/felt weird Saturday. A lot has changed in one off season it appears. Parking and Traffic seemed to be 100x worse than last year for some reason.

27,900 wasn't a bad number with the economy and current parking situation. The truth is that even in a good economy 28-30k is about it. We added a few seats with completed construction, but we lost a lot of grass on the hill. It looks like the record 30,931 from last Halloween will stand a while.

The true App fans are there. It is really hard to add casual fans when they have to sit in the grass (or stand) and can't find parking anywhere!
We'll see what the crowd is for homecoming…Hopefully we get a win against Samford first.

I Was reading the new Top 25. App St is now 10th and has a lot of work to do. We are still ahead of #11 Elon who has not played anyone respectful. The only thing I really disagree with is down the points I saw "Georg State 2." Georgia State does not start play until 2010, so can anyone explain how they got 2 points? I will say that maybe ODU deserves 2 points, but they have yet to beat a D1 team. I do give them a chance against Jacksonville.

  13. CHUCK

    September 14, 2009 at 3:43 pm

That makes me not to want to even look at the rankings, if a team that doesn't even exist can get points.

  14. CHUCK

    September 14, 2009 at 3:45 pm

But I was pleased with #10. I was thinking we would fall to 15-16 or so. 0-2 and #10, I'll take it! Now we have to step up. But I have faith in my boys! We all felt our season was looking grim in '07 after losing to Wofford and (I hate to even remind myself) Ga Southern at home. We can bounce back.

    Gwaitineer,

Elon looks what. Do you own who Davidson and Presbyterian. These are some the worst teams in the FCS. Elon has not beaten App St since 1964.
The last two years Elon was in the playoffs going into the last we and both times they not only lost, but lost in a way that would make Western Carolina look good. I do want to hear any more about Elon until they win a real game.

By the way App St vs Elon tickets go on Sale tommorrow. I expect thousands of App fans at this game.

I think a loss for App State is a good thing… a lot of fans… like some of the ones on this website… think App Sate is ready for the SEC or ACC. Better think twice about that, huh, McNeese State was the "reality inducer" this weekend right? Watch out for Wofford this year in the SoCon

  21. David

    September 14, 2009 at 5:54 pm

The way you (mtdrago)described the non-competitve Elon football team … why would our fans even want to go… see what I mean by our arrogant attitude? We better get a grip on reality. The SoCon is tougher than ever and everyone wants to beat us "The Mighty Mountaineers". humility is in order before we get our butts handed to us.

    Elon = Buffalo Bills.

How can you lose the game up by 11 points with less then three minuties to go. Buffalo Bills just can't win the big game and neither can Elon.

  24. Ry_ATO

    September 14, 2009 at 6:31 pm

its not like the Bills blew the lead against the Raiders. they were playing the Patriots.

We still can't take Elon lightly or anyone else for that matter.

  27. Michael

    September 14, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Here's what I know about Elon: They have the best QB-WR combination and have tons of guys returning from an 8-4 campaign. They're experienced and hungry to make this season their big breakthrough.

I also know this: Elon may not have beaten ASU since 1964 (45 years ago), but they've only played about 10 times in that time span. Elon also was going through the growing pains of adjusting from D-II to D-IA until the past 3-4 years.

It's easy to draw unreasonable conclusions, like "Elon stinks," from certain stats. For example, you wouldn't expect App State to have won 4 straight conference titles and 3 of 4 national titles if all you knew was "ASU is 1-7 all-time against the Southland."

We're foolish if we write them off. It's not like we blew them out last year, and that was at home with us having a weather advantage.

  30. mtdrago

    September 14, 2009 at 9:07 pm

Even if Elon were to win the SoCo some how. They would get blowout against any team from the CAA. If Elon was in the CAA they would be lucky to be a 500 team. They can not the big games. I am not writing them off, but History seems to keep repeating for Elon. They need to prove me otherwise. Elon is 0-13 against App St since 1964.

  31. appnaysayer

    um…. what?

  33. Keith

    September 15, 2009 at 4:25 am

I don't know about a .500 team, but there is little doubt that the CAA is the best conference (it bothers me to admit that). They have beaten four FBS teams. I have been very impressed with Elon over the past five years. They have came from nowhere to a respectable FCS program. I think they have played us very tough the last two years. Plus, if you argue Elon is weak, what does that say about the SoCon…they finished third last year. The way we played last Saturday, we better not overlook anyone.

  34. Dan

    September 15, 2009 at 4:48 am

FYI – since '05, 5-2 against the CAA, including 4-1 in the playoffs.

  35. Gwaltineer

    September 15, 2009 at 5:25 am

why are we talking about Elon? The game is not until Nov. I hope we are in a position to compete with them for a SoCon championship at that point. We've got to get through the "big 3", Samford, and Citadel before we play Elon. The only games that should be an automatic W are El Cid and NCCU.

  36. Mike

    September 15, 2009 at 5:49 am

We are definitely at a point where we need to be thinking "One game at a time." It's pointless to talk about anything other than Samford. Their going to be tougher than most think and could (possibly) effectively end our season if we overlook them. My guess is Jerry isn't talking about anyone else right now.

Does anybody else have a hard time reading mtdrago's posts? (And not mtdrago, I was not an English major — I just like to be able to comprehend paragraphs!)

While I hope this game was the eye opener for the team, it is going to be a very tough year in the SoCon. It is an odd year (meaning the games against typical powerhouses of the conference are on the road — minus The Stink) and the top seven spots can be taken by any body. There are only three teams who do not look good enough to compete for the title — Western, Chatt, and El Cid. And even those teams can pull of an upset or two. It is going to be a very tough year but with the quality of teams in the SoCon, I think we can still win the conference with one (possibly 2 if the above 3 teams upset a "top tier") in conference loss

  38. Dan

    September 15, 2009 at 6:36 am

I agree with the 1 conference loss Joe, anything more than that and we're taking a pretty big risk. Of course, that 1 loss also assumes we're splitting the conference title and not squarely in 2nd or 3rd place.

  39. Joe

    September 15, 2009 at 6:49 am

Yes, 2 conference losses would be a reach, but given Western/Chatt/Cit beats Elon/Wofford/Furman/Samford/Stink and we all beat up on each other, it is possible — just very unlikely.

Regardless, it is the beginning of the season and these young men need the support from us now more than ever!!

  41. DRM

    September 15, 2009 at 10:42 am

The ONLY way we GUARANTEE ourselves a playoff spot is by winning the automatic SoCon berth. And the only way we guarantee doing that is to go 8-0 in conference. We can't afford any more losses if we want to control our own fate.

Samford has an excellent RB. We didn't do much to stop McNeese's RB. Elon has the best WR and the best passing QB we will face all year. We didn't do much to stop McNeese's QB and passing game. We cannot overlook anyone. Not anyone.

I would say that App faces at least a "big four" in SoCon (Elon, Furman, GaSo, Wofford), and quite possibly a "big five"–add Samford. And in Charleston, I don't want to count Citadel in the win column until we're up two TDs (enough margin to absorb the punt/kickoff return for TD we seem to give up at least once every few games).

  42. Joe

    September 15, 2009 at 11:22 am

"And in Charleston, I don’t want to count Citadel in the win column until we’re up two TDs (enough margin to absorb the punt/kickoff return for TD we seem to give up at least once every few games)."

Very true DRM. Cadet Andre Roberts is the real deal and can be a huge game changer!

  43. clayton

    September 15, 2009 at 11:31 am

Evans from Samford concerns me more than Roberts or Hudgins.

  44. appnaysayer

    September 15, 2009 at 11:50 am

Based on the way this season has gone thus far, I can think of at least four CAA teams right now that would give us fits–UR, Delaware, W&M, and JMU. They might not win, but no doubt, based on records to date, those four are stronger than FU, GSU, El Cid, and Wofford and Elon.

  45. DRM

    September 15, 2009 at 1:00 pm

I don't know their record, but I would throw Nova into that group, too. More than in past years, CAA looks very clearly superior to SoCon thus far this year.

Given the ease and frequency with which McNeese receivers got behind our DBs, Roberts may be nearly as dangerous as Evans–which is to say, pretty damn dangerous. And Hudgins even more so, as he has an excellent QB throwing to him.

  46. clayton

    September 15, 2009 at 1:16 pm

My rationale there was that I trust Cortez Gilbert to neutralize a top receiver. He did it to both players last year. Chris Evans had 200 total yards against us last year. That's only 50 less than what Pendland did to us on Saturday and Hudgins and Roberts did not combine for 200 total yards agsinst us last year.

  47. DRM

    September 15, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Okay, your stats are convincing support for Evans being more of a threat than either of the SoCon's premier WRs. At this point, though, I'm afraid of just about any player on the opposing offensive team–no matter which team we're playing.

Breitenstein, Eric Breitenstein. Why we passed on him, I'll never know. Must have figured he wasn't fast enough.

  55. DRM

    September 16, 2009 at 5:21 am

That's all (perceived lack of speed) I could figure, unless it's because he's more of a traditional blocking back and our offense doesn't really use those. I would love to have a back like him on third and goal from the three. But then I would love to have AE under center, at least now and then, in that situation, as well.

  56. Joe

    September 16, 2009 at 6:45 am

Breitenstein does not fit in our system at all.. if we went for him, chances are, he would be 4th or 5th on the depth chart for a system that does not fit his abilities..

We were interested in him for his Safety abilities, but he wanted to play RB in college..
