Waaaayyyy back before the season, College Gameday on ESPN focused on football in the state of North Carolina. And look who had a helmet alongside the “big” boys! Thanks to Appfan Rob for sending this in (he apologies for taking so long).

Pop quiz – Which team today has the best record? /giggle
(Response – And which team handed that team one of its two losses? /sigh)
Meanwhile, the debate rages on.
gwalt – wtf? this isn't an elon board! Besides, this is just pointing out who has the best record of the group pictured above. And let's revisit the whole best record thing after Nov. 14th.
Black and Gold on ESPN. Elon who?
Of those schools depicted on the ESPN shot, we have the best helmet. Our block A logo is great.
I would rank the helmets as follows (ignoring color preferences and focusing only on design):
1 ASU
2 State
3 Duke
4 UNC
5 Wake
6 ECU
You guys missed it. Elon's helmet is the one in the middle between Duke and App State. Part of their marketing deal with ESPN for broadcast rights to the Davidson and Presbyterian games at Elon this year.
I'd have to say
1 ASU
2 WAKE (it's still Black and Gold
3 The Orange one in front
4-7 ALL THE REST
DRM… switch Wake and Duke in that ranking. It is also interesting to note the five FBS schools and one FCS school represented on that ESPN spot all use letter based logos on their helmets.
Agree on the colors, Jason (and 55), but Wake's logo is too simplistic. And ECU's is, well, juvenile looking.
State's is the closest to ours in design, and I like the small N and C in the crooks of the S. Duke's D has a double-meaning, with the upright in the form of a capital I–signifying their "Iron Dukes" club.
UNC's reminds me of the font Comic Sans MS–rather too informal, but interestingly overlaying the N and the C. Wake should be more imaginative; they definitely have the second-best color scheme.
That College Football Live helmet reminds me of a Cleveland Browns lid that someone defaced with stickers. Not that I'm a Browns fan, mind you. Or a NFL fan, for that matter.
Regarding 55's observation, which school's helmet design would be most improved by substituting a representation of their mascot for the letters? My vote would go to either ECU, UNC, or Wake.
We could only do Yosef if it was the old Yosef, not a big fan of the new one.
55, in no way, shape, or form is that interesting.
And for any NC FBS'ers out there, I don't think App is the best team in the state this year but, the mere fact that we can be in the discussion, shows how lousy you are.
Elon looks good this year… only problem is they haven't been challenged by a good team, unless you consider Wake Forest a good team who crushed them (35-7). So thats like saying Leesville High School is the best in the state because they have the best record (its not too persuasive ehh?)
We have one win against a team with a winning record? Not ready to talk smack on Elon until we play and beat them.
actually, we have no wins against teams that currently have a winning record, and Elon is killing us in that department with… 2!!
Since Furman managed to lose to Citadel, I'm even more sorry they missed that last-second FG that would have given Elon a loss.
Or do I have that backwards–Elon made a late FG?
Whichever, I wish Furman had beaten Elon. And it's against my religion to root for anything purple. Except the Horned Frogs, should they get to play one of the almighty BCS teams in a bowl.
Would love to see TCU win out. I am tired of the Ridiculous BCS. Maybe if a few little guys keep some big boys from their paychecks, something might happen.
Seriously, do you like carrots or something?
Clayton… it is interesting if you consider other states and their FBS programs.
Stop for a moment and think about it: outside of Virginia (UVa and VT), Georgia (GT and UGA), and Oklahoma (OU and OSU), other states with more than one name brand FBS program have schools using combinations of letters with mascots, mascots only, or something more benign (think Alabama's numbered helmet) in addition to letter only designs.
NC has five FBS programs that stick to letters only. That's why I find it interesting… so many schools following the same formula, especially considering that helmet logos are little more than branding exercises for a university athletics program — even if it marks the NC FBS programs as slightly unimaginative in their graphic design.

DRM… to your comment: Duke should add the Blue Devil into the D.
Just saw this, these guys are awesome! I cant wait to see the GASO video.

Elon has the best record in the state.
Yes, I can't wait until we are in the FBS with the rest of the helmets. Frankly, we're better than most of those teams.
Elon is overrated. Yes, you heard it here first.
Looks like it's "Gold Saturday" at Furman's "White Out"
Furman's message boards said that last week when the fan club was putting on the white out. Any other sources say we're wearing gold?
it is true… .http://www.goasu.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=21500&ATCLID=204823052
crap
Dan, just stating the obvious. Elon should get some love from the local reporters.
I don't count as a source?
That is an older helmet of ours btw. Our new helmets have silver flake in the black paint and give them a silver tint up close in the sun, the block A is kind of small too compared to the newer one. Still looks good, but the new one blows the others away!
That's a good and accurate statement, David. Also, our overall uniforms (jerseys, pants, etc.) look better than any of the others. I believe our helmets look best when combined with everything else.
I really don't find that interesting.
Gwalt, just giving you flack for propping up Elon. I think they might get a little more love from reports once their actual fanbase starts giving them some…
Not into the artistic and marketing side of the game, huh, Clayton. Maybe you need another pair of sunglasses.
55, I agree re: the blue devil. That would improve their look. You should market that design to Duke.
Orange, I'm with you on TCU. It would be interesting to see them get a shot at a really "big-time" program, and pleasing to see them win.
I like WF's black and old gold the best.
With AE back and the Defense coming together, this Mountaineer team can beat any other Team in the State regardless of venue….period. Tar Heels had a great game last night against VATech, but this ASU team is now the real deal, which it should have been at game 1. All of you that want to say your beloved ACC team is better,or that we already beat you(ECU), you are sorely mistaken. ECU, you didn't face our team, you faced a glimpse of what our team can do late in the 3rd and 4th quarter. You are very lucky that you got a victory against an FCS team………like my man Rick Flair says……WHEW! Furman, I know it's Halloween and a scary time of the year, but you should be scared of the #1 offense in the country hanging 60 on you!
