'00-'09: Cha-cha-changes

The past 10 years of App State football have been the best in program history. Three straight national titles, all in consecutive seasons. Five SoCon titles, again, all in consecutive seasons. The All-Time Upset. Two SoCon record setting QBs. An all-time great receiver. An all-time great running back. A streak of 30 wins at home. Apps in the NFL ranks.

Let’s look back, shall we?

'00-'09: EPIC FAIL of the decade

The godfather of Giglionosis speaks the morning of Sept. 1, 2007. Cause every “big time” college game should be a clash of titans! .. at least on paper. Oh, and only in football.

Could an App State great be headed to Cock land?

We love Shawn Elliott. Always. From his days as a player to his current status as offensive line coach. He’s the emotional type. And occasionally he kills a player or two. (Has anyone seen Irvin since that Richmond game?)

It’s pretty much assumed Elliott is annually on plenty of short lists for coaching jobs. Currently there happens to be an OL coach opening at South Carolina. And guess who’s been spotted down that way?

We asked Elliott to . . . → Read More: Could an App State great be headed to Cock land?

Butch baby finally learns a big lesson in 2009

A $2M pretty blue boy scared of App State suddenly has an epiphany – “The only way you are going to find out if you are any good is when you start playing good teams,” Davis said. “You don’t find anything out when you go out and beat someone 42-0. You don’t learn anything about your program.”

APP-propre links

Hump’ed day. Ugh.

AE is interesting. Nice company there.

Who will coach against App State? We really have nothing to say on this, other than we hope he’s okay.

Some recruiting news. For what it’s worth.

Uh-oh. “The repeated inactivity of Murrell, a big contributor on special teams, remains a mystery but I’m told he and special teams coach Mike Westhoff don’t see eye to eye.”

Christmas in Boone. It was pretty awful.

More on McNeil. “Texas Tech is . . . → Read More: APP-propre links

And a former App State assistant shall lead them

Texas Tech has fired its coach. Which means former App State assistant Ruffin McNeill will be coaching the team for the Alamo Bowl Saturday. An ECU grad, McNeill was defensive coordinator at App from 1993-96, and an assistant from 1989-91. FINALLY a bowl game we’ll wanna watch.

'00-'09: The Alltime Wedding Gift

Fun detail from Ann Arbor we never knew.

Oh, there were a handful of Mountaineer fans on hand and a reporter from the Ann Arbor News found Jason Bond and LaJuanda Pritchard outside the stadium for a great story. The couple is getting married in a few weeks and as a wedding present, bought each other tickets for the game. They drove 10 hours from Asheville, N.C., to see the game that they knew their beloved Mountaineers didn’t have . . . → Read More: '00-'09: The Alltime Wedding Gift

'00-'09: How about an all-decade all-SoCon team

At a Furple message board, someone posted an all-decade SoCon squad. Of course AE is top QB and Superman top defensive player, but App also dominates first-team O and D lines. Great run down on games of the decade, too. Apologies for sending you to purple, but cool read.

Catching up on the bball season

App State closes out 2009 at Campbell tonight. It’s the 13th game of the season. So how ’bout we briefly look at what’s been going on with five quick questions.

So how’s this App State team looking? Too early to really tell. Sure, the team is 7-5 overall, but just 5-5 against D1 teams. The “biggest” win would be the 93-92 OT thriller at Morgan State, primarily cause it’s the only win against a D1 team with a winning . . . → Read More: Catching up on the bball season

Looking back at the decade's All-Time Upset

We’ve been having some fun with the cliche of the month – lists centered on the end of a decade. Just about every such list with a sports theme makes mention of the earthquake reported Sept. 1, 2007.

We’ve done our best to move past it, at least as much as a Mountaineer can. But man oh man it’s just so sweet to reminisce.

One of the better reflections on that grand day comes from author Clay Travis over . . . → Read More: Looking back at the decade's All-Time Upset
