App State drops the big one

Great game. Great atmosphere. Great drama. The Big Hunt had it all … but an App State win. Congrats Montana. You represented. App State. We love you still. AE. You are the Greatest App Ever. We’re hoarse. We’re tired. And we’re saddened. But for now nothing but salutes. Good luck next week Griz. And good night App State. Get home safe. It’s cold out there.

ALL OVER. Coach Moore in the Winston paper – “But I can’t say enough about Montana. It was every bit the ballgame we expected it to be. We just had numerous opportunities to score but didn’t.”

How many drops did we have in that game? I am thinking somewhere around 13-15? I know we had 7-8 in the first half. That last drop for the td killed us!

We shot ourselves in foot this game, but I have to give it up to Montana. They did a very good job on both sides of the ball. You could say buts and ifs about the result of this game, but none of that will change the final score. Big props to Montana, and for ASU, my neighbor said it best, "The sport of football is not going anywhere, and there will always be next year"

Win or lose, it will always be great to be a mountaineer

As an Appalachian grad I couldn't be more proud of the football team and university as a whole. I wish the seniors the best and am grateful to have witnessed the outstanding play of Armanti Edwards over the last four years. Great season and congrats on another southern conference championship. We will get them next year. Go Apps!!

Thank you Armanti Edwards and all the seniors who have made this the greatest football program in Division IAA for the last four years. May the underclassmen pick up where you all left off and take us even higher!

I could literally feel my heartbeating faster at the end of the past two games. Armanti is the MAN, it'll take someone special to get anywhere close to the records he has set. All the best to the seniors. One question I just can't help but throw out there, why didn't the coaching staff allow Armanti to do what he does best and have a designed run/option at the very end? With all the drops, there was a timeout that could've been used… I'll quit talking now, game is over, on to next season.

Congrats Montana, you earned it! I just hate it for Armanti, because after watching the game I think we were better than them we just coudn't pull it out. Poor kick off coverage and too many dropped passes tonight. We didn't wrap up on defense either, why is that so hard for this defense? Cadet, you better get ready because you are the man next year!
    Thank you Armanti!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, killed me seeing/hearing brian quick in tears in the post game press conference as the reporters are all over him about the last drop, forget he put his heart out there with 8-135 or something….emotional

moore did mention the uncharacteristic drops today..said he didnt know what that was all about

speechless, cant believe we lost, i hate to admit it, but i think homefield was the difference…that game is at kidd brewer mountaineers win by 6.

maybe in the offseason and people seeing that i will get a few more followeres on the removal of the hill behind our endzone and put seats on top of it issue..

my dad called me and said, well on to basketball. i said no one cares about basketball really, it's on to next year and football.

so who ya got? cadet, jamall jackson, or presly? i think cadet might be tooooo much of a playmaker to be at QB full time.

To my on-line friends, it has been a great season. Pull for our beloved App State in all things, but re-start the count down for next football game.

We got beat….no question. But was it me, or did Montana get a pass on penalties tonight! On the flip side, we are lucky on replay because we fumbled a lot tonight and got away with it!!! My biggest fear is that we are just a pretty good football team, and Armanti has had to carry us too much!!

Montana is a truly classy place with classy fans. The Grizzly fans on here have given App respect and understand that both teams are great and knew that this game would be a classic. So….is Armanti Edwards headed to the NFL?

  39. Kidd Brewer

    December 12, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Dropped balls, penalties, 2 missed FG's, a red zone interception, and despite all of that, we had the ball on the 2 with one second left. You have one play to make to determine your fate…who wouldnt want that opportunity? We didnt get beat 100-0. We deserved it, but we didn't get it done…one more yard and we may be in Chattanooga….but we arent. A great season, a great team. I am proud to me a MOUNTAINEER

I will mainly be there for the AE half show. AE is the Walter Payton Award 2008-9 winner. Even Montana knows that. Go Montana. Beat Nova. If not before we will see you in Kid Brewer in 2011.

I think Armanti will get a long, serious look by most NFL teams. His size is really going to hurt his chances of being taken in the top half of the draft, but some team will roll the dice on him by round four or five. The big question is, how will he be used?

Congrats Montana. Good luck in the Finals. I just feel disappointed we didn't seem to be able and give AE a proper send off. That and our WRs really need to work on catching the ball, how many drops can you have?. Thanks to the Appalachian State Football Team for a fantastic season, we will be back! Thanks to AE for being such a fantastic person, player, and representative of our fine university.

Spies, the guy has rushed for 4,000 yrds and has taken your team on his back for four years. When it all comes down to it, no slight on any of the receivers, even with the drops, they made big catches all day long. In that situation you don't roll snake eyes two weeks in a row (Richmond). Go with your best! Go APPS

Take care all and hope your fans that attended took my advice about dressing extra warm. See you all next year.

  54. parking lot

    December 12, 2009 at 5:55 pm

its starting to settle, and even though they had 2 spies, i'm thinking id still take armanti any day. it was his team. his legacy. give him the shot. he gets stopped on the 1 or 2, i dont question the play call 1 bit. would have liked to see him get a shot. but it's amazing how much better his arm strength got throughout the 4 years. just think the michigan and richmond year how much he scampred, and to now he's a true passing qb and running as well.

also, forgot who mentioned it, but we wont know if jamal jackson is the real deal till he plays a down of college football. but his size and stas would suggest he is/certainly can be. the main benefit is the fact that he's 6'3..

  55. Scott

    December 12, 2009 at 5:58 pm

No need to second guess the calls or the drops, we competed today and had a chance to make something happen on the last play.

The playcall would have resulted in a TD, had it been executed, but give full credit to Montana for making the plays they had to make. Also, their defense was a result of some of the drops.

Also, in a close game it often comes down to Special Teams. Montana clearly won that battle.

It hurts, but IT'S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!

What a great and exciting season – just short. We had the ball and a chance to win against ECU, lost in the last second to McNeese and lost in the last second today.

Gwaltineer, what a shame you are with your posts after these guys played their hearts out. Zero degrees and a driving snowstorm and you are ripping guys? Pull your fat a$$ off the couch and go out there and give it a shot. My bet is you can't.

So proud to be a Mountaineer and can't wait until next season.

Armanti Edwards accounted for about 400 yards of offense. Choke? I think not. Again you guys have a great team and played a good game. It wasn't the cold and it wasn't the noise it was the teams. They both played their hearts out and we came up a little short. We will be back and hopefully will have some revenge next year.

  69. Suck It

    December 12, 2009 at 6:46 pm

The reason u came up short was because of the Choke act! Over throwing wide open routes (2 for TD's) isnt choking ok sorry excuses blame other players for the loss not the Commander and "The Best QB" in the FCS.

I think we showed the nation today that we play great football up here in MT. AE is a good quarter back I dont really see what all hype was about it looks like the wind would knock him over.. But enough of that.. Hes your guy we got ours. which sucked tonight 11-25. But at least he got it done when it counted…. Peace APP state. we will meet again.. MontanGriz,

All the hype is about his incredible numbers, yeah he is smaller than your typical QB but he plays big. Even look at his numbers today 400 yards of offense. Look for him on sundays. He is the best player in FCS and one of the best in all of college football.

Griz fans, congrats. You should be proud of your team and the fans that represented at Montana tonight… they were obvioulsy a factor in the game and resulted in several procedure penalties.

I'm as disappointed as any App fan, but all players on both teams played their hearts out and left it all on the field. Couldn't be prouder of the Mountaineers tonight. Don't worry Griz… we'll be back. Here's hoping we get you guys at our house next year…

Armanti Edwards is a first class top of the line amazing player and Griz Nation was lucky to watch him play in person!! I hope we all are lucky enough to watch him play on Sundays. Thanks to App State for a hard fought, leave your hearts on the field kind of game. There are dickwads in every fan base – we have our share. Sorry SI found his way here. 99.9% of Griz fans have the greatest respect for App State and what you have accomplished. I know it is hard to say good-bye to AE. Here is hoping we meet again soon! December 12, 2009 at 7:45 pm

OK, I'm finally coming out of my funk. Man, that one hurt. Not anger, just heartache. That one was ours. We had the better team, they had the better running game. We dropped some passes we shouldn't have, granted. Brutal weather play a part in that I would think. I wished we would have used a little better time management at the end. We lost 20 seconds off the clock in the last minute between one set of plays. I was going crazy. The difference tonight, and Coach Moore said in the pre-game it would come down to whoever gets the breaks, was penalities. Those are unforgiveable, and that was the break they got. How many days until the season starts?!!

APP state v Montana 2nd best game I have ever been 2. I think Montana was the better team. Y because they had 7 more points then the opposition. APP state got away with a lot of fumbles n I dont think penalties played any part in the game.. Or maybe the False starts by App state. But the bad calls on fumbles was App's break. They could not capitalize. N thats what matters. What penalties did we get that changed the game? I didnt c any… quit being a poor looser. Maybe there wouldnt be so many hatefull griz fans in here if APp state fans had a little respect b4 the game..

    December 12, 2009 at 7:58 pm

    Griz_Nation,

Out of all those "fumbles" only one was actually a fumble the rest were obviously after the runner was down. There was one by quick that looked like it might have been a fumble but that was the only one. So we did get a break on that one but these tings tend to even out as happened as there were a couple missed calls. So officiating really had nothing to do with the game at all, which is a good thing. I'm happy to say this one was purely settled on the field.

    Hey Suck It,

To say Armanti choked is about as ignorant a comment as I've heard tonight. You are obviously that fan that both teams hate because you are so stupid and embarass those that have some class.
Montana has a good record, but really only one good win, and that was tonight. Otherwise, you play in a weak conference and don't venture out to challenge yourself. I hope Montana loses Friday, just because of you. Otherwise, your fans have been first class!

Congrats ASU on a great game, great season, and a very talented QB. As a long time season ticket holder in Missoula, I'm delighted with the outcome of the game — but nobody can argue that tonight wasn't a great game, and both teams deserve kudos. I agree with an earlier post — this was the championship game (sorry Nova). As for Suck It, you're a disgrace. Come down to the Missoula Club tonight so several former Griz players and myself can teach you some manners – Belfast-Style. Looking forward to making the trip to Boone for our 2011 regular season game there. Have the beer cold for us and plenty of it….

Please realize that lowlifes like Suck It are thankfully a very small minority in GrizNation. The rest of us know that AE is truly special, that (we hope) this was the real NC, that our QB was as off as your receivers (which wasn't much), that the weather was an equalizer, that we got away with one, and if it mattered where this was played, then Griz fans had a part in it. It's easy to be gracious in victory (despite a few well-placed jerks), but AppState fans rule, because you've shown it in defeat. Thanks!

AE indeed is world class. He is probably the most accurate passer to play for a visiting team in WAGriz in at least 10 years. ….and I thought it would be his running that would give the Griz fits. As for Quick: (1) his athleticism and good hands caused the Griz problems all day, so cut him just a little slack; and (2) give the Griz DBs some credit. Looked to me live, and on replay, that TJ broke up that last pass.

It was indeed a game for the ages, regardless of the winner. Every play was meaningful and competetive. Both teams behaved with class, although ASU DB # 18 might learn to use his arms to wrap up, and forget about using them to taunt a fairly knowledgeable crowd. I remember Georgia Southern winning in Chatty in 2000 with absolutely no hint of class. The Mountaineers gained a lot of fans in Missoula today……I hope ASU wins 'em all from now on, except when you play the Griz.

Maybe you should go back and read the posts throughout this blog and see how much disrespect UM was given. You actually should be ashamed to put down a die hard Griz fan when he stands behind his team and town.

(if the guy really wants to get technical about the hill asu is actually at a higher elevation they pointed that out on espn) great game. no excuses. you won. please beat the caa so maybe they wont get 6 teams in the dance next year (since 20 teams will be playing)

look forward to getting a shot at yall in our place in 2011. although with all this talk something tells me there's a good shot we could do this again next year come playoff time.

and there's no need to wack people backgrounds..on either side… yall are "tough big farm boys" i get it.
but we arent "preppy eastiders" just cause we got mostly black team from the south and rely heavily on speed doesnt mean we are "soft" and cant take it by any means.

little known fact for montana people armanti had a pretty rough upbringing himself. his dad is freaking incarcerated for life for MURDER. didnt even get to watch his son (armanti) play a game until this year when they showed the game in the state pen!
…so ther'es no need to start comparing "tough backgrounds, and upbringings on here." i dont think there were any pansies on the field today, for either team.
The guy for app (cline) who got layed out got up and played a heckuva game after that! brush them shoulders off, and we will be back, there is no rebuilding..the guy who returned our last kick is the backup QB and we be in there next year…hope to see yall then and good luck against the stupid CAA and Nova

You guys brought that upon yourselves when you came to OUR website and started spewing YOUR pride and ridiculous factors (weather, crowd) for the game.

Did we underestimate you? Possibly, because you never played ANYONE. If your plan was to play an incredibly easy schedule so we wouldn't really know what to expect, then maybe you figured out how to beat anybody, no matter what your talent.

the two teams played so hard, i think it was one of those games where if its played in montana, montana wins. played in boone, app wins. just an opinion. nothing can be done. i know. great game. hope the fbs nation watched and was jealous. that was some good football today. good luck again against the caa. we hate them

Congrats to App State on a great season and a great game! Personally, I was glad it was the great game it was billed to be.

I agree that Armanti Edwards should have been given an opportunity to run the ball at the end. My friend and I said that the Griz offensive coordinator must have been calling the plays for App State at the end.

The Griz quit running the ball after meeting with huge success on the first series of the game. With the weather and Selle having a subpar game, it was inexplicable that they would wait until the fourth quarter to start running it again.

There were a lot of dropped passes on both sides which is what happens when there is a below zero wind chill!

Great game. Too bad either team had to lose! Sorry about the rude Griz fans that posted here. They certainly don't represent the team or the community!

Pretty damn hard to make. OK? If he hadn't hit that ONE he did, we wouldn't have been in position to tie/win the game. If you want to gripe, check out the penalties we had. Great game. But someone had to win this one, and the grizz got it. I love the smack talk on here. Bout time ASU can play a great team with real $hit head fans who love the team. Awesome. I hate ASU is out, but that was the Champ game. Two best programs in the last ten years… JUST AWESOME.
However, unlike other APP fans, I hope you loose to NOVA. Sorry, but I cannot pull for you next week. Even though I think you guys are going to KILL Nova 🙂 and you guys will KILL THEM!!
I have not been following this blog closely this week, but I make the choice not to read poor posts by ASU or Grizz fans..

Go back and watch our first two drives. Drops ended them both. In fact, drops ended 3 of the first 4.
The team played hard and moved the ball well on a lot of drives, but once we reached the 30, we did not execute.

That was a great game. So great, that I suspect next Friday is going to be somewhat anti-climactic. I hate to say it, but to me Villanova has looked like the best team in I-AA football all year long, and I think we would have had great difficulty beating them if we had pulled this one out.

Chattanooga ain't Missoula. There won't be any screaming fans or driving snow storms. This NC game is beginning to look a lot like last year's.

Thanks to the classy griz fans who aren't being total d-bags, we appreciate the comments. Great year, really sucks it had to end this way. The 36 yarder by Vitaris never had a chance, should have been convertable. 44 yarder was also a lost cause, but i tend to think that one didn't have too much of a shot anyway… We just didn't make plays when we needed them.

So if we followed the Griz schedule pattern, we would have not played ECU or McNeese ST. and replaced them with two sure wins. Would we have run the table and been the #1 seed?

Nova will mow over the Griz. The CAA is the best conference in the nation and it will again be proven next Friday night. The Griz play no one and when they finally play a quality program, like App. State, they were handled in almost all parts of the game. The Griz last TD was a sham. App. State got jobbed and that's a shame. I think the Nova v. App. State game would have been one for the ages and I think App. State would have easily won it. Great 4 year run by your progam. I don't think AE will get a shot in the NFL. He's too small. What a great talent. He will have to go the route of Rodney Landers and be in the arena league and work his way into the NFL if he can. When you guys were in Harrisonburg last year, we had a great time with a number of your fans before and after the game. Hold you heads high. What a nice season for your program. Yogi – this was the first year w/o Satterfield and this "unimaginative" offense was ranked in the top 5 of the FCS pretty much all year. Drops killed us in this game, that and the lack of a clutch FG kicker. Nothing really to do with the play calling.

Armanti will make it to the NFL hands down….Landers is not even comparable to Armanti
Edwards based on his speed, instict, and strength of his arm. Also Jamal Jackson will be the starting QB for the Mountaineers next year. He is a quick 6'4 athlete with a cannon arm. Plays very similar to Terrell Pryor and look forward to him taking over post AE. GREAT GAME NEERS, you have made us all proud and I am just pleased to have been a part of the success here @ Appalachian State!

Did you really think that the ASU defense would hold up against the UM offensive line? 6'7" 280 verses 6'2" 255? A times, but not the entire game. AppState is in for a long stretch of "almost" seasons unless they change their recruit criteria. Everyone is getting bigger and quick, app is still just quick. The undersized offensive line makes it difficult to use all of the weapons because they have to keep the TE and a running back in the protection scheme. Also the good defenses play straight to the guard and tackle, which stops alot of the zone block chipping to the next offensive lineman. Now size and strength and push win over quickness. Sorry to be so "football" film speak, but this is how it's done.

Buddy please dont compare Landers to Armanti Edwards. Just go ahead and stop. Im sure many people have read that comment you posted and just ignored you. But please just quit hating on Armanti by comparing him to Rodney Landers. Thats like saying our offensive line was well-coached this year. If you didnt know…our O-line wasnt. Armanti has more speed, agility, arm strength, and most importantly…one of the (if not) the biggest hearts in all of college football today.

Crowd? Very respectable, but less than capacity. Not a factor in the outcome.

Noise? Possibly a factor in some of the several first-half procedural penalties, but I'm not sure either of those turned out to be drive-stoppers in and of themselves. Less a factor in the second half.

Weather (as in temp)? Probably a factor in numerous dropped passes. Two or three drops were because of good hits by the MT defense, but five or six were flat out drops. AE should have had at least five more completions. Even Cline dropped a few, both before and after he was laid out on the MT sideline. MT receivers dropped two or three, too; given that they threw exactly half as often as we, the ratio of dropped "catchable" balls was not all that different–which argues that both teams' receivers could blame the cold. I'd rate the effect of temps roughly a wash.

Penalties? Definitely a factor–11 for 131 versus two for 15. And we still manage to put up 497 yards? Along with the drops which, as Gwalt points out, stopped at least three drives in the first half, penalty yardage made it difficult to sustain drives and possession. Personal fouls, holding, pass interference–those 10- and 15-yarders are killers. In that regard, we were hardly different than we've been all year–i. e., highly penalized, especially for major penalties. But with the exception of Elon, Richmond and ECU, our opposition wasn't of the same caliber as MT.

Surprising statistic, rather uncharacteristic of our team: time of possession was nearly 10 minutes more than MT.

Most impressive aspect of the MT team? To me, their O-line. Great holes for #34 (#24 too, but he isn't nearly as good), and great downfield blocking.

App the better team? Not sure how we could claim that. More individually talented overall, probably, but in a game between very evenly matched teams, the better team is the one that makes fewer mistakes. Yesterday, that was clearly MT.

Arm-chair quarterbacking (in addition to last play call)? 1. As one of the numerous MT fans named some variation of "griz" mentions (and as our play-by-play guys kept wondering), why did MT become pass-happy in the first half after their opening drive? Our D pretty much totally shut them down in the first half once they started passing on first down. And their highly regarded WR–Mariani, I believe it is–had only three for 39 the entire game. I don't think the game would have been as close if they'd stuck to the run in second and third quarters.

    2. App has to get better at cover corner (especially Gainey), and more consistent in the FG kicking game. That's not a knock on Vitaris' performance yesterday–the blocked kick resulted from a bad snap, and conditions could easily be blamed for the other miss. But overall this season, we've had about as many heart-in-the-throat FG moments as FSU back in the wide right days. We need to be able to count on three points any time we line up a 45-yard or shorter kick.

  193. Gwaltineer

    December 13, 2009 at 10:28 am

Frank, you are stupid. Size was a factor and helped you, but our smaller, quicker defense was the reson for the lost. 12 dropped passes, 1 for 3 on FG's, and 11 flags to your home town 2 lost the game. Like Jerry Moore said, it was a great game for the FCS. You guys drove down when you had to to win, but our offense moved the ball a lot better than yours did.

  197. DRM

    December 13, 2009 at 10:37 am

No, Griz Fan, you're wrong. One second, one play, regardless. Many App fans who've watched AE for four years trust him to make three must-have yards more than we trust any other player (Gwalt, I'm talking about a designed run here, not a pass-run option). Throwing the ball introduced another variable into the mix–in this case, Quick. The pass wasn't absolutely perfect, but it was very catchable.

As great as he's been, many of us would have preferred to see the game completely in AE's hands, particularly given the number of dropped passes we had in the other 59 minutes, 59 seconds. (Given that MT had a few drops, too, and that we threw exactly twice as often, I'd say the cold affected receivers about equally on a statistical basis.)

Dan-you must be related to one of the coaches.
Could the reason we have been listed as having one of the top five offensives in the FCS have anything to do with incredible talent?? Who couldn't be a great coach with that group!

Having said that, I thought the play calling was not bad this game. Too bad for Quick that he
missed a tough catch. One thing about ASU, they NEVER give up. I thought we would pull it out in the end, because they have so many times in close games.

Congratulations to all the boys from both teams on a hard fought game!! Best wishes to all the seniors in the coming year.

    December 13, 2009 at 10:51 am

Exactly, Delmar. And after watching AE for four years, many App fans would trust him to get three must-have yards more than any other player; how many times have we seen him do that? And throwing it merely introduced another variable into the mix–in this case, Quick.

    December 13, 2009 at 11:06 am

Yes Mominator – that's it, i'm Jerry Moore's illegitimate son. It couldn't possibly have anything to do with the coaches being at least partly responsible for the team's success. Hell, let's just have a chimpanzee on the sideline throwing darts at a play chart, and we'll run that. We have both great coaches and great talent one or the other doesn't get you as far as we got this year. And DRM, I agree with you completely, would have preferred AE run that one in also.

    AE's career stats, by year:

    2006 – 15 games, started 13; 3,404 total yards, 30 TDs, NC (team 14-1)

    2007 – 11 games, started 11; 3,536 total yards, 38 TDs, NC (team 13-2)

    2008 – 13 games, started 13; 3,843 total yards, 41 TDs (team 11-3)

    2009 – 12 games, started 12: 3,970 total yards, 30 TDs (team 11-3)

    Totals – 51 games (49 as starter–42 wins, 7 losses–86%); 14,753 total yards (10,392 passing, 4,361 rushing), 139 TDs (team 49-9–84%). Most rushing yards, year 2 (1,588); most passing yards, year 4 (3,291). Remarkably consistent in total yardage: 3,400+, 3,500+, 3,800+, 3,900+.

As Coach Moore told the press yesterday, they will cover (and we will watch) many, perhaps hundreds, more games before we see another AE.

The comments by Purple and Gold are the reasons that people don't like the CAA and JMU in particular. They consistently claim superiority over the other conferences and make comments like "the Griz don't play anybody". Well if you made an attempt to expand your football knowledge across the Mississippi river you would find out otherwise. Last year the Griz went to JMU and thumped them pretty good. This year App State came here and almost beat the Griz despite almost every adversity you can face. One reason is that the App. State coach is a classy coach and the JMU coach isn't. The CAA has some good teams but their self proclaimed superiority is a sham. We have never played Villanova but they don't seem to have the talent and experience that the App State team had.

Incredible game – it's fun to watch the two FCS dynasties head-to-head. AE was a stud, but fortunately for Montana, Reynolds brought his A game. I don't think we would have won anywhere but Missoula, though. Is AE expected to get drafted? Seems like NFL teams are really reluctant to take chances on undersized QBs these days. It would be a shame if we don't get to watch him play on Sundays.

As JM told the press yesterday, they will cover (and we will watch) many, perhaps hundreds, more games before we see another player like Edwards.

    AE, year-by-year (2006 through 2009):

    Games/starts: 15/13, 11/11, 13,13, 12,12
    Total yards: 3,404, 3,536, 3,843, 3,970 – 14,753 in total (4,361 rush, 10,392 pass)
    TDs: 30, 38, 41, 30 – 139 in total
    W-L as starter: 13-0, 9-2, 10-3, 11-2 – total
    42-7, or 86% (team 49-9, 84%)

As to undersized QBs, who knows AE's NFL chances. But he's much in the same mould as Pat White (both style and size). Except that AE is a better passer.

DRM, I would have agreed that Quick was most dependable when he is leaping, but that last 7 games, he has ran some great short routs. That was one of them. He progressed very well this year into a complete reciever. Just like we have not seen a fumble since he was loose with the ball in the McNeese St game, I bet we do not see many drops next year after this game.

He just dropped a pass. He caught for 135 yards. It's tough to argue with the play calling when the play got your best target open in the end zone. He just dropped this one.

Great Game App Fans! I agree with Montanafan. I think the outcome would have been different had we played you anywhere else. The Griz stadium is a tough venue for anyone but the griz. That was the best football I have ever watched, ever! I will be looking for Armanti on sundays! You guys are full of class, thanks for coming here to Missoula! Random thoughts:

    Weather: Non-factor
    Crowd: Non-factor
    Mariani: Non-factor
    Montana’s O Line: Factor
Lanston Tanyi’s absence against the run: Factor

Problems we didn’t fix over the last three games:

Ridiculous penalties (O line wins the kewpie doll here; You could blame noise, but they got the same penalties against UR and SCSU. Personal fouls and crucial facemask didn’t help).

Spotty kick coverage and mediocre kicking game (Martin had a pretty good day, but that’s about all you can say. Montana had good field position every time)

Questionable secondary (unable to cover one-on-one when it matters; See Gainey v. Trey Gray at UR and on Saturday)

Unimaginative play-calling (if ever there was a time for a QB draw, it was during that last series; See DRM’s post above)

Good to see Armanti graduate and ahead of schedule. With him gone, can we fill the house that he built? Will Yosef Club please stop sending out letters about championship tickets until we actually qualify?

Man, what a game! But damn, how disappointing! We dropped more passes than I've ever seen us drop, and it would've been a different game had we just hung on to a few of those… and if AE had taken it himself on that last play.

If the same teams on the field last night were to play 10 times, App wins 8.

But gotta credit UM for a great game too. Your RB is awesome and we had no answer for him. Regardless of other posts here, I think your size was a factor too, y'all got some big boys!

For the Grizz fans on here, you all are the classiest bunch of fans we've come across. Its a pleasure having folks like you join in on our board. Last night was the championship game… either of our teams would crush Nova next week. Good luck in Appanooga next week, I don't think you'll need it but I'm pulling for you!

To AE… I mean, really, what can you say? Thanks doesn't even come close. But, thanks for an unforgettable 4 years. Not to take away from the rest of the team but, AE single handedly changed App St in so many ways, from the football team to the whole university. I can't wait to see him play on Sundays!!

Gut wrenching, hearbreaking loss last night to a great UM team but, IT'S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!! I SAID IT'S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!! I SAID IT'S GREAT TO BE A MOUNTAINEER!!!

We will need leadership with AE gone (Moore, DJ, Legree) possibly.

I see Chisome (sp?) playing a larger role. I sure hope Tanyi is going to be alright.

I've read on some posts that Cadet is not a lock at QB. Jamal will probably be given a fair shot in the spring.

Yes, Armanti Edwards will be a carolina panther next year. If i were panthers management, i would make a deal with edwards to guarantee to draft him if he is still left by the last round and tell him not to go to the combine! You don't want other teams seeing that kind of speed and accuracy. Take a qb with your 2nd round pick and then take edwards if he is still left in the draft. It gives you a back up qb plus a wr. I mean, come on people….We've go freakin' Jake Delhomme! what could it hurt? The fans would love it!

From some pretty high sources….Jamal Jackson is going to be considered the starting QB next season…he has a 6'3'' frame with a cannon arm….I've also heard Cadet's upset because he wants to be the starting QB….this being said, Cadet has also been mentioned as the hardest worker on the team…could be an interesting off-season….

I don't think the best team won the game on Saturday, but instead the most disciplined team won…we had wayyyy too many penalties and dropped balls to win a semi-final game…hopefully our team can be more disciplined next year and have a chip on their shoulders….

    December 13, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Jimmy, NFL teams can't make deals like you suggest with potential draftees. It's flat-out illegal, and even if it weren't it's impractical.

I'm a Carolina Panthers PSL owner and I've followed the team even more closely than I've followed my beloved Apps, and I would be very, very surprised (pleasantly though!) if AE wound up in Carolina. Consider that he's never taken a snap from under center in his career, and he would have to do that to have any chance of playing in the NFL.

As for being drafted as a wide receiver, remember that he's never run a route or caught a pass in his career either.

If he gets drafted (and I believe he will) it will be somewhere in the mid to lower rounds as a "project," a player with such great athleticism and potential that you're willing to keep him on the roster for a year or two while you help him develop specific skills. The thing you have to remember is that while AE's athleticism allows him to dominate at this level, in the NFL just about everyone is just as athletic as he is, or more so.

I wouldn't count him out though. He has shown incredible toughness for his size, tremendous heart, and a knack for making the big play under pressure. Those factors can't be measured at the combine, but every team has a way of accounting for them in their player evaluations.

I think he will play quarterback in the NFL.

  251. carbine

    December 13, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Jimmy, NFL teams can't make deals with prospective draftees like the one you suggested. Even if they could they wouldn't; it's too impractical.

As an original Carolina Panthers fan and PSL owner I've followed the team closely since before they had a single player signed, and I'd be very surprised (pleasantly so!) if he wound up playing here. He's just not the kind of quarterback this team is usuallyl interested in. If John Fox gets the axe, it's possible the next coach would have a different philosophy, one more amenable to Edward's style of play, but I doubt it.

To play QB in the NFL Edwards would have to get used to taking snaps from directly under center, something he's never done in his career here. It's been suggested that he could be drafted as a receiver or kick returner, but he's never run a route or caught a pass in his career either.

I'm sure some team will take a chance with him based on his athleticism, but probably not until the middle rounds or lower. His speed and moves, while dominant at our level, are not that unique for the NFL.

Still I would love to see him as a Panther, and I hope he gets a shot at playing quarterback. I'll be pulling for him no matter where he goes. I figure we owe him that.

    Final thoughts…
AE, you have the heart of a champion and have represented our university with class and dignity. You've been part of some of the greatest moments in ASU history and accomplished records that may never be broken. AppNation will never forget what you've done for this team and our university. We wish you nothing but success!

BQuick, we wouldn't have been in position to tie w/o your efforts, so you should hold your head high… you played your tail off, and I look forward to seeing you for 2 more years.

Even though we lose our best player from this squad, we are still young and have Devon, Quick, Cline, Coco, Elder, etc. returning next year… defense loses Roman, Gilbert, DTs (all great players), but should be able to backfill.

If Griz plays anywhere close to the level they played us, they win the NC game by 20.

Griz, you beat a great ASU team, now go out and finish it off with a championship. No disrespect to CAA, just wasn't impressed with either CAA team on Friday (actually thought Richmond was better than both those teams).

  265. Grizfanatic

    December 15, 2009 at 1:03 am

Armanti is absolutely incredible. There is no doubt about that. He completed passes with our defenders on top of him, passes I've seen no other quarterback on any level complete. Quick is a great receiver, and your team as a whole is extremely fast and I was glad to face you guys in the semis as I feel you were the best team in the playoffs next to us.

    WITH THAT SAID…

I had to get on here because I had been reading what App state fans had been saying about the cupcake schedule the Griz play, their lack of deserving of being #1, underplaying the crowd noise, and overall just the usual east coast rhetoric of our team being better than yours because you play in the west. While on this post most of you have been humble in defeat, I just wanted to elaborate on why the many cocky undertones leading up to the game are just plain and simply wrong.

1.) The crowd noise was a factor whether you think so or not. It may not have been to Edwards, but it certainly was to the O-line as well as their play calling. You guys even had to huddle up a few times which you rarely do. 4 false start penalties in the first half as well as the ability for our D-line to get a jump or at the very least get off the ball at the same time as your line led to us being able to contain the run of Edwards and Moore. We yell for our team here, and I think we proved we HAVE THE LOUDEST STADIUM IN THE FCS.

2.) We play in the Big Sky. Last I checked, 3 teams from our conference got Bids. at one time we had 5 teams ranked in the top 25, and we are a perrenial powerhouse. (like yourselves) We proved we are worth the hype and can beat the best teams in the nations on any given day. Beyond that check how the bracket was stacked against us, pitting us against an 11 in the first round, the #1 offensive team in the nation in the 2nd, and either you or richmond in the semis, I think our undefeated record and ability to beat these teams speaks for itself as well as the big sky.

Finally… I would just like to add that that was probably one of the best college football games I've ever watched and I want to thank you for that. You guys are truly a great team, and that game would not have been possible without such an amazing opponent. I just hope that FOR ONCE The University of Montana has earned the respect of THE NATION and shown we deserve our #1 ranking. Wish you all couldve been there it was truly special. All 25 thousand standing on their feet screaming in a concrete stadium built into a hillside under the lights and snow on ESPN… doesnt get any better.

Thank you… especially if you read it all 🙂

P.S. Decibel readings at Washington Grizzly Stadium get louder than Quest field in Seattle… Look it up 😀

  266. AppClassOf09

    December 15, 2009 at 5:43 am

    Grizfanatic,

I think that the main objections that most app state posters had to the crowd noise claims was it assumed we never played in a loud environment before and it seemed to indicate a certain disrespect for our stadium and atmosphere. We too can get a little loud as I see it the two stadiums are pretty comparable on gameday. No one was claiming there wasn't going to be effects of the noise (huddling, having to get in the linemens ears, etc.) but to think, especially beforehand, that our team couldn't or didn't handle the team noise or was going to be rattled by it is clearly wrong and insulting to our program and home environment. The fact is crowd noise did not have that much of an effect on our team.

  267. DRM

    December 15, 2009 at 9:36 am

Fanatic, in regular season, you beat two or three teams ranked in the mid-teens or lower at the time you played them. EWU (14) and Weber St (18) were the only teams still in the top 20 going into the playoffs. In the playoffs, you faced an 11, a 12 and a 5, all at home. You won all three, and you're headed to Chattanooga. No one can discredit that accomplishment, and least of all App fans, since you beat us head-to-head. Much as I detest Lou Holtz, he is correct in at least one of his folksyisms–you only have to be the best team in the stadium on that particular day, and you guys have been that for 14 straight times. Tough to do, against any level of competition.

By contrast, though, in the playoffs we faced a 7 (at home), a 4 (road) and a 1 (road). Counting Elon (ranked 6 when we played them, 9 at season's end), that means App played at least four top-10 opponents this season, plus one FBS school. We are the only top-10 team you've faced (prior to Nova), and your league's other two entries in the playoffs lost by 11 and 38 in round one. (Northern Iowa was probably a more deserving "last-in" choice for the playoffs than was Weber State.) This was definitely a down year in SoCon, but nevertheless our one other playoff team lost by three, on the road, to the defending champions.

You guys understand the system and you schedule to gain maximum benefit from it. Instead of scheduling tougher non-conference FCS teams and/or FBS opponents, you play D2 schools like Western State. Nothing wrong with that–it works for you, because the seeding process rewards perfect or near-perfect records (and, based on our 2007 experience–Michigan win, two SoCon losses–doesn't reward playing or even succeeding against FBS competition, presumably unless you don't lose any FCS games). But don't expect our fans to have high regard for your schedule, including the Big Sky opponents, given the teams we schedule. Overall, I'd say the Big Sky was marginally better than the SoCon this year. But the reason you guys dominate it so thoroughly and so consistently is because it isn't, year-in and year-out, a very strong league. When Boise State left the league after 1995, Big Sky was left with one good program–you guys–and a bunch of other teams, a few of which are respectable each year, but none of which threaten to win a national championship.

Think what you want, but noise had no real effect on the outcome of the game. In the first half, it might have slowed our tempo a bit, but procedural penalties didn't kill any drives–dropped passes did. Besides, I'm not sure the procedural penalties weren't as much due to defensive movement, which our O-line didn't handle well at all, as to noise.

    DRM
Let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect for your program and especially Armanti Edwards. The heck with the Payton Award, he deserved Heisman votes. I bet you beat 8 out of 10 times, but not this time, it was our day. I also GUARANTEE that Michigan beats you 9 out of 10 times, but they didn't, it was your day. This is already sounding petty but I'm sick and tired of being blamed for a weak conference and schedule. So we played Western State, so what? When it came time, we walked the walk. Doesn't making the playoffs every year since '93 and playing in 6 finals mean anything? We have proven we can play with anyone in the country and have done so repeatedly in the playoffs. Both programs have proven that on any given day… How did The Citadel take you to overtime? You only beat W Carolina by 5? Now I know you will say that these are tough conference teams despite their records and the perhaps they are. The same can be said for Idaho State, which required a last second field goal with no time remaining for a 12-10 win. I guess what I want to say, with the utmost respect, is that the comparisons you make aren't really valid because on any given Saturday…

Anyway, enough is enough, I greatly look forward to the Home and Home in the future. This is an excellent opportunity for both programs. I would love to make it to Boone to experience your atmosphere and hospitality and I hope you will try to make it to Missoula to experience the same.

    Best of Luck

I don't care about your schedule you are a great team. I think you will take it all. We don't have to look at your schedule this is not FBS we play for it not vote for it. You played for it and won. You are champions just like us. Come to Boone we think you will like it.

Let's see, if I save $1 a day from now until we play App State in 2012 or is it 2013, I'll have… What am I thinking, we'll hopefully be playing you guys next December in the Semi's in Boone. Chatty would be nice but I think it would be fun to watch your fans respond to the "best fans in the FCS" challenge. Can't wait to see your stadium Rock App Style next year or in 2013. KsomeA next year so we can play again.

Best game ever played in WGS. Best quarterback to ever play in WGS. The two best teams to play in WGS. Colder than hell in WGS. If played in Boone you win. I have been to Boone great city and atmosphere – could move there in a heartbeat. Damn, I hope we be Villanova just to quiet the CAA. I hope AE gets drafted as I have money bet on him. Is he really as good of a person as por trayed? We are flying to Boone for the rematch in 2 years. Go ASU and Go Griz.

Grzfan (you guys are really creative with multiple uses of such a short name!), seems to me you and I are pretty much saying the same thing. My comments were only in response to Fanatic's boasts regarding Big Sky rankings and bids; no other comparisons were intended, beyond scheduling philosophies which, as I said, work better for you guys than for us. Bottom line, Big Sky is dominated by MT and SoCon is dominated by App, though to a lesser extent than you guys dominate your league. Most years, we have truly legitimate challenges from GaSo, Furman, Wofford, and now Elon. Unfortunately for the conference, GaSo and Furman programs are a bit down, and Wofford had a slew of injuries that pretty much destroyed their 2009 season.

But as you say, on any given Saturday . . . among Saturdays this year, your Idaho State was our Citadel. As to WCU, we have an excuse–AE didn't play a single down, and our offense was virtually non-existent. That five-point result is why many of us are worried about the post-AE era at App. In fact, with a bounce here or there, that game could easily have been one of those " . . . any given Saturdays."

As to 8 of 10, I'm not so sure. Though quite different in style and composition, the two teams looked very evenly matched to me. On a neutral field, key players of both teams remaining healthy, etc., I'd bet on an even split.
