Catching up on the bball season

(sings) One of these poses does not belong ... App State closes out 2009 at Campbell tonight. It’s the 13th game of the season. So how ’bout we briefly look at what’s been going on with five quick questions.

So how’s this App State team looking?
Too early to really tell. Sure, the team is 7-5 overall, but just 5-5 against D1 teams. The “biggest” win would be the 93-92 OT thriller at Morgan State, primarily cause it’s the only win against a D1 team with a winning record today (7-5). But the Apps also finished strong, coming back from six down with 38 seconds to go to force OT with a Jeremi Booth trey at the buzzer.

And the “lowest” loss?
Two games later at home against Furman, App State controlled most of the game but fell apart in the final minute. Furple took the lead with :31 seconds to go, and scored 9 of the game’s final 11 points to win 85-82. Furple was .. /sighs … 6-24 last year. App State had won four straight – and five of the last six – games in the series.

Who’s the star?
Mr. Automatic is back! Donald Sims has rediscovered his stroke, going for a team-high 17.1 a night on 48 percent shooting. And he’s getting hotter, nailing right at half his trey attempts in the past eight games. He’s also hitting 96.1 percent of his free throws, fifth best mark in the nation.

What about those turnovers?
This was a season-killing issue last year, and an emphasis in the offseason. This season so far? Welllll … /sighs … App State is averaging 16.9 lost possessions a game, second most in the SoCon. As for getting them back? The team is last in the league in turnover margin, -4.75.

So how good is Campbell?
The Buies Creek Bunch is 6-4 on the season, with losses to the ‘Whee, Va. Tech. UNCW and … /double checks .. Longwood? Really? Longwood? Yes, really. It was Campbell’s last game – Dec. 22 – so ya gotta figure they’re spittin’ mad and wantin’ redemption. They haven’t beaten App State in three tries the past three seasons.

The Morgan State game was at home.

Good overview of the season to date. I think the jury is still out on this team until the real conference season starts. A Curry-less Davidson has left the conference without a dominant team. So, once the SoCon season starts, this team may perform well. It would seem, however, that Western is the team to beat in the North.

It is good to see the b-ball squad getting some attention. We should all pay more attention to our basketball program, how much fun would it be to have a basketball game with people in the stands?!?! I get a little tired of the people that claim to be Appalachian fans when they only support and care about our football team….. I think that is called being a fair weather fan!

Those that want ASU to go FBS need to also support bball. When the shake down happens it isn't just going to be about the football program.

AB-Don't bring up the FBS talk please. I know your intentions are basketball, but some people on here love to change over to football real fast. I do agree with you and LP Appfan though. The support for basketball needs to increase.

It is funny that the latest blog on here was basketball, because I was just thinking I would love to see more basketball. ASU will probably struggle this season, but still be improved from last season. Unless your name is John Calipari you are not going to land great players your first year coaching. (Looking for Kentucky to join UMASS and Memphis under the list of schools Calipari has led to being sanctioned) Buzz has two transfers along with some great recruits coming in, so look out.

I think ASU will finish either second or third in the SoCon North, and anything can happen in the SoCon tournament. Speaking of SoCon tournament, does anyone know why the first few rounds are in Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, and only the semis and final games are in Time-Warner Cable Arena?

Also to continue with the trend on this blog, and every sports show in the world. Top-Decade theme. I want to know everyone's opinion on the top-dunker of the decade for ASU. My nomination is Jonathan Mitchell. This guy could jump out of the gym.

*Sorry Appfan, I am not trying to take your job*

I think the first two rounds are at BoBos Coliseum because there are events already scheduled at Time Warner. I think…
Glad to have the tourney in Charlotte this year. Its a 15-20 minute drive for me to BoBos or I can hop on the lite rail to Time Warner Arena.
The team to look out for this year in the SoCon is the "whee".
    Go App!

I'm getting a little tired of being told to support Appalachian basketball.

But, the best dunker of the decade is cousin Jeremy.

Bball will earn respect and fans when they win more than they lose and become more consistent…

This is how football did it…

I think its coming though, next year looks to be a strong one.

If basketball wants respect they need to earn it. I know it's a cliche but it's true. They haven't come close to earning it this season and it may be another year or two before it happens. Sorry, but as that guy on CBS used to say, "And that's the way it is."

We may be discovering that Buzz is not a miracle worker. The team still needs size and ballhandlers.

This team needs help everywhere. I've said it before and I'll say it again–Buzz should have had the balls to get rid of half the roster and just start over with his own players. Instead, he chose the easy way and retained the ones who got his predecessor fired. Get off your ass, Buzzsaw, and hit the recruiting trail. The golf course can wait.
