And 'Nooga makes it a sweep, kinda

fear the scoring droughtsOnly one North Division team this season managed to beat App State. And that was ‘Nooga.

In last night’s rematch, the Mocs went down!

Barely.

The Mountaineers, who had previously locked up the North Division’s No. 1 seed for the Southern Conference Tournament, secured an outright first-place finish in the North with last night’s victory. They improved to 19-11 overall and 12-5 in the SoCon.

The Mocs took advantage of an ASU scoring drought that lasted 3:26 with a 9-0 run that closed what once was a 13-point deficit to a single point. Ty Patterson’s steal and layup with 4:28 left closed the gap to 65-64.

Josh Hunter gave Appalachian a bit of breathing room, scoring inside, drawing a foul and completing a 3-point play that boosted the lead to 68-64.

Meanwhile, the fictional overall SoCon regular season title went to … /double take .. Wooford! The lil’ doggies knocked off CofC, 74-68, in a matchup of the league’s top two teams.

Looking back, App State hung tough with the South’s top teams. The games with the Cougars and Terriers were each decided by one point – App beat Woffie, lost to Cofc*. So you gotta feel good about tourney time next week.

One game remains till then – Lil Sammy in Jones Arena Saturday.

One side note – the official attendance last night was 2,003. That’s right at the reported average for the season, 1,999. Reports indicate a blizzard is now hugging Boone, and it may last until Saturday.

* Earlier we erred in saying Wofford won that game

    We beat Wofford

Yes we did.. hopefully if we meet them in the tourney, we can beat them twice this season (something that is hard to do against a good team)

Blizzard, my you-know-what! Partly cloudy skies, sunny, quite windy, rather chilly, but no snow (except all that still on the ground from earlier in the year). Isn't snow required for an official "blizzard?"

The SoCon bracket has been flipped due to the Curry rules mentioned a few days ago. We play the El Citadel/North #5 winner next Saturday at 7 pm.

Man I wish we could play the tarheels this year…

"Blizzard" is the official Harris-Teeter forecast. The blizzard was last night. I still think someone should call out the App student body for their chronic lack of support for basketball. Appfan?????

Naysayer…the weather sucked last night…think about this year and all the rainy games for football. If the weather isn't nice students don't show up. Also, it's basketball and this ISN'T a basketball school…yet (I don't think it will ever be either but who knows). I think you have to take all that into consideration.

It's crazy, to me, how weather is used as an excuse to keep on-campus students from WALKING to the Holmes center. In my day we had to get to Varsity Gym plenty early to get a good seat on the old bleachers. I thought about that last night when I was watching online. Man it would have been nice to have had an actual seat. And we would even WALK across campus in below zero temps plus windchill to work-out at the Quinn Center.

Sadly, a 20 win season isn't going to make people come to the games. The only thing that will help with getting students to the games is having "tailgate" festivities and if we make noise in the dance. As with football, majority of the students are there for the social aspect — not to support their team.

Joe, you've said it about as best I've heard it!

  • DRM

Harris-Teeter has a weather forecast? I knew there was some reason (other than their higher prices) that I shop elsewhere.

I still don't think there was nearly enough snow last night to qualify as a blizzard, but either way, I'm with jonmac–on-campus students have no excuse for not showing up, unless their excuse has something to do with meeting academic requirements.

  • For the record, we have a benign attitude toward men's bball attendance. We refuse to concede that the team "deserves" support, any more than we think the women's bball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling or track teams "deserve" support. But that's just us.

  • Appnaysayer

Why is "football" not on your list? Football does deserve support?

  • Appnaysayer

By the way, Mark Twain once said that only editors, kings and people with tapeworm should use "we." So i guess you're allowed.

  • No, we do not think football "deserves" support. It just so happens that football generates its own interest and fanbase which, in our mind, have nothing to do with whether they "deserve" it. Cause even if you're good enough, and you're smart enough, and you work hard enough, dog gone it, people have no obligation to attend your contests.

  • That's how I felt about class.

  • appnaysayer

Well, now I'm going to have to beg to differ on that point. I think students do have something of an obligation to support the athletes who represent them. But then, as is well-established, I am old school.

And Clayton, I hear the faculty felt the same way about you.

  • Brad

If you all knew what these student athletes go through to represent our university and the amount of time they put in. If you all were in their shoes, wouldn't you want the support…that very thought about not going to football games to support the team that people just go for "social" interaction is ridiculos. All I am going to say is that there is no reason that if you are on campus and don't have to drive in the snow, that you all as students can't get over the convention center and SUPPORT our team…Get there…The team could do some amazing things if the center was somewhat full every night. It makes a difference…
