App State's newest weapon – the running back corps

The SoCon had its first coaches teleconference today. Moore was asked if he’s ever had a RB stable this good – “Probably not the quality depth that we’ve got right now. I feel like we’ve got 4 or 5 guys that are all pretty good football players.” Also, “The obvious thing we got to do, to improve, starts with our QBs. They’ve got to learn to apply things they got the gift to do.”

Panthers trim roster

Now with less Blur – “To get to the 75-man roster limit, the Panthers made five moves Tuesday. They also placed WR Wallace Wright on injured reserve and waived wide receivers Dexter Jackson and Oliver Young.” He could still be picked up for practice squad. Regardless, we’ll always have 2008.

On the brink of a $1M FCS-FBS game

What bad economy? – “On the flip side, Louisiana-Lafayette hasn’t signed a deal for under $900,000 since it scheduled Georgia. It’s getting $950,000 from Florida for a 2012 game. “Supply and demand is part of it,” said Farmer, who worked at Georgia Southern from 1982-99. “Right now there’s more of a demand than there is a supply.””

This ain't gonna help the hype

About those AE troubles with returns – “On September 30, 2001, the 1-1 Panthers hosted Green Bay and held a half time lead 7-6. A rookie punt returner proceeded to fumble two consecutive kick returns in the 3rd quarter giving the Packers extremely good field position which turned into two TDs.”

Sure, it’s preseason. But a sack is a sack. Not bad for a first-time LB.

10 for 2010 – How important will 3s be

The second – from 44 with 3:45 remaining in a tied game – well, we all . . . → Read More: 10 for 2010 – How important will 3s be

The next App to make the pros could be ..

Hey Mr. DJ .. You can get this started …

When NFL scouts arrived at Appalachian State this summer, they immediately asked about linebacker D.J. Smith.

Defensive coordinator Dale Jones has also answered questions from NFL scouts about Smith. He said the Charlottean will likely move from weak-side linebacker to middle linebacker in the pros because he can cover tight ends and running backs.

“He’ll have a chance (in the NFL),” Jones said. “He brings great leadership. His . . . → Read More: The next App to make the pros could be ..

Will AE get a chance to show he's improved

Game 3 of the Panther preseason is underway. AE has yet to return a punt. /nervous silence …. But maybe that ain’t a bad thing … maybe – “Not necessarily. They wanted to see Guy, who’s been hurt. RT @Joshuamcsee Take it AE didn’t look better on punts during practice this week?”

Meet a Mountaineer – Wilson Fitchett

No. 59, 5-10, 230, Junior, LS – “Former walk-on has been stellar for 2 years in one of the most high-pressure and thankless roles in the sport … 2009: Was snapper for every punt and PAT/FG attempt for the second-straight season …he was not responsible for any bad snaps .. enjoys surfing.”

What's the state of the Yosef Club?

The Yosef Club made headlines a few weeks ago with a press release proclaiming a record year in fundraising; $2.5M!

Awesome. /applauds

A Boone paper reports on the highwater mark, and includes this rather odd detail.

Currently, Mauney said the Yosef Club boasts roughly 2,300 members, who pay $10 per year to be part of the club. Most members pay the membership fee plus offer a donation, but each member receives benefits such as special parking spaces and priority . . . → Read More: What's the state of the Yosef Club?
