Bball thread – Elon at App State

ItGotta play some defense – “The Mountaineers average 75.6 ppg behind these talented playmakers, but they allow 75.4 ppg. Both Elon and Appalachian State can score, but the Phoenix’s improved play in the trenches should lend the squad an advantage tonight.”

Scott Riddle can try, but he will never make the NFL. Yes, he can pass, the big thing is he cannot scramble. He had a total of negative 123 yards rushing for his Elon career. Yes, I said negative. I do not care what kind of offense line he is behind, he will not make the NFL. Also, it should be pointed out that he never once won a big game at Elon. Loss to App St 4 times, 0-3 vs Richmond, 0-3 vs FBS (Wake Forest, South Florida, & Duke). Scott Riddle you have three choices
    1. Go to the CFL, AFL, AAFL, UFL, or some other independent football league.
    2. Become an assistant coach like Trey Elder. Riddle in not Trey either by the way.
    3. Use your degree to get a normal job.

Riddle face it the glory days are over. And I am still asking what glory days. Appalachian State is the Six time SoCon Champions and Elon never even tied us. At least Wofford tied us twice.

App St has beaten Elon 4 straight times in Men's Basketball. 16 Straight times in football. 3 times Straight in Women's Basketball.

Here is #5 in a row for the Men's Basketball team vs Elon.

A bit ugly towards the end, but I'll take the W. Great, fast-paced game with a few highlight-reel moments. Was surprised that there was actually a better crowd tonight than against UNCG.

Hopefully, this gets the train back on the tracks…

I love "just like football chants", but I can't help but feel like that's the sort of thing that inclined Buzz to leave. It can't make the team feel good to have their moment be undermined by a reminder that this is a football school. Not that I didn't join in. I just wanted to make the 3 jackasses behind their bench feel as bad about themselves as possible.

Airball chant whenever #20 got the ball was a good one. We looked pretty good in the paint, shame sims never found his shot.

    January 17, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Their loaded ACC schedule is the reason UNCG had no wins towards the beginning of conference play. They're not a good team and we still should have won that game going away, but they're much better than that record indicates.

Gonzo makes a compelling case against the just like football chant. However, I'm sure that the players on the floor as well as recruits realize that football is number one here and barring an SMU-esque death penalty that's not changing anytime soon.

I've seen quite a few basketball players at football games and quite a few football players at basketball games, so I doubt there is any animosity at all between either program.

I have a question, tho…just a personal observation. Why is it that our sneakers are different from player to player this season? I saw about five different shoes on our guys and Sims' shoes even had Elon maroon around the ankles. Whassup with that? It's like they all went to Pick 'N Pay and had to buy their own sneakers. I know we don't have the Air Jordans "connection" anymore but c'mon, Mr. AD…can we please get our guys the same shoes?

I really liked what I saw out on that court tonight! (…well, except for the shoe-thing). Thanks to all the students for the GREAT and LOUD support!

    January 17, 2011 at 7:03 pm

Why has no one mentioned how awful a team player Sims is. At the end of the game Elon was pressing and he decided he was going to break the press himself. He even signaled the rest of the team to go on and then turned the ball over. I understand he is supposed to be our best player but he is way too selfish. I would say 8 of his 10 misses were bad forced shots. Carter was doing great so Sims didn't need to take all the shots. I know Sims had an off night so they wont all be like this I just wish he would pass the ball every once in a while.

    January 17, 2011 at 7:05 pm

I'd rather the players NOT all have the same shoes App Band. It gives the players a little something to themselves…BUT…more importantly, its all about comfort level. The same shoe doesn't work for different types of athletes. I like that they have freedom to choose their own shoe. Also, pretty sure Sims shoes were red, white, and black….don't think I saw any "Maroon" in them…

    On another note…
Someone needs to steal that mic from the girl who announced all the mini-games that went on during timeouts. Her voice is VERY annoying and she talks so fast and high pitched that it is hard to even understand what she is saying. Band members were yelling for her to stop talking and I, along with most everyone around me, agree. For those not at the game…consider yourselves lucky!

    January 17, 2011 at 8:45 pm

I as well was yelling at the WASU girl to shut up. i can't understand her when'sshestalkingat100milesperhour.

I wish the team would continue doing what they were doing to start the game. We were dunking on Elon at will. Hausley in particular could dribble-drive to a dunk. We got away from that, plus Sims tried too hard to get going early on. He should just feed it to Carter who was on fire.

I don't know why would be going to Indy right now, but "some sort of tryout camp" sounds like the combine. Mtd missed App play Elon this year. Riddle scrambled and made plays all game. Don't really care though, he won't get far.

  24. StorminASU

    January 18, 2011 at 4:23 am

    @ Mountain Magic,
I've been saying he's a terrible team player this whole year. He's forcing shots without even considering passing and most of the time they're not even close. I almost think we'd be a better squad without him.

  25. AB

    January 18, 2011 at 4:29 am

Riddle isn't mentally strong enough to make a team. Bad temper and frustration when things go wrong. He's the FCS version of Clausen – a brat.

    Stormin and Magic,

I have been saying that since early last season.. its clearly obvious he wants the individual stats and not the team wins..

Was anyone else a little agitated when Elon continued to foul until the final 4 seconds of the game? The game was absolutely decided with 30 seconds to go, yet they dragged it our for another five minutes. I also saw some Elon player on the bench gesture to a player on the court to hit one of ours. It was after a little scuffle for a ball or something and the guy made a fist and a (hit dat dood!) punching motion. I swear the whole school has no class. Is there something in the water or is it just because they're all yankees.

Once again people are saying a crowd that is barely over 2000 is a "great" crowd. How did ASU basketball sink to this level?

  31. StorminASU

    January 18, 2011 at 7:16 am

They kept losing key games after building some momentum. Everytime a crowd would come out after a streak, they would choke. Not much incentive for a crowd to get excited after while…

  34. Appy97,00

    January 18, 2011 at 9:04 am

Elon seems to have little class. Not sure they can compete with WCU in that category, though. Also, about the crowd of 2,000….not impressive, considering Western had nearly 4,000 for the game Saturday, and were surprisingly somewhat loud and spirited (not common for WCU sports). We should be outdrawing the Catamounts for basketball by at least double that amount.

  36. cbarrier90

    January 18, 2011 at 11:18 am

Basketball is all Western has, and it was a rivalry game. If I recall, we had 5000 for the game against them in Boone last season (but I think most of that can be attributed to the football SoCon championship celebration festivities that took place that day.)

2000 consistently is a good crowd for where we are as a program right now, but winning consistently, especailly when alot of people show up, will do wonders for attendance.

Riddle had 43 Rushing yards against us this year. Yes, I was there and he did do a great job. I said for his career, HIS CAREER, he had -123 yard rushing. I added it up. This game was his best performance rushing in his entire career at Elon. He still lost. And he in still not going to make the NFL. Maybe Practice Squad for a team. Especially with a 2 game season for Pre-Season in the NFL if the NFL goes to 18 games. Remember Riddle is at least a Seven round draft pick.

Dominick, I TOTALLY agree with you about mic-girl! YIKES!!!! I immediately plugged my ears every time she started SCREAMING at warp-speed in that EXTREMELY high-pitched voice! I don't understand why everyone who does the announcing during time-outs and/or halftime thinks they have to YELL into the microphone. That's the whole purpose of the mic! (…and on a personal note: I REALLY MISS Bill "Fish" Fisher doing the announcing!)

The ankle strap on Sim's shoes definitely looked maroon to me, and I sit right behind the home bench so I saw it up-close. I don't disagree with you about comfort level for players, but it really detracts from the "uniform" look as a team.

    Keep up the support, Mountaineer
Fans! We need you! GO APPS!!!!
