Another former App coach taking over at UT

All our best coachRocky at the top – “Bruce Pearl’s tenure at Tennessee is over. Sources say that former Appalachian State head coach Houston Fancher, the team’s coordinator of video scouting, is expected to take the reigns as the interim coach until a permanent replacement is hired.” Good for him.

NO CLUE. One comment from Fancher today – “”Nobody has told me that,” Fancher told The Knoxville News Sentinel. “I think that’s just the scuttlebutt out there. If that does occur, I would think they would tell me.”” Gotta appreciate headlines like this though.

Does an interim coach get to recruit?

Personality-wise, switching from Pearl to Fancher may give the UT players whiplash. Good thing for them it's the off season.

Very happy that Coach Fancher will get a shot at this. What a great guy. Sounds like Tenn could use a good guy to clean up a big mess..

I hope that he is able to stay on as Head Coach..

Yeah, Marquette. Or maybe the Wichita State guy.

Ben, that would be nice for Fancher. But it's unlikely.

I liked Coach Fancher in the few interactions I had with him as a student. I worked part time as an assistant at the ASU Child Dev. Center when I was in college, and his then-4-year-old son was in my classroom. He was a really nice guy, the kind of person I really want to succeed.

At the very least, things will get done the "right way" with him in charge at Tennessee, however long that is.

On a separate note, the unsubstantiated rumor on talk radio in Indianapolis is that Tennessee wants Butler coach Brad Stevens to succeed Pearl as the next coach. He'd be the perfect candidate to take his place. Like Pearl, he's enthusiastic and his players love him, but he absolutely will not bend the rules to gain an edge over competition. I hope he stays at Butler, though, because, more than any coach or athlete I can remember, he's been willing to turn down big money and the spotlight because he and his family are happy with Bulter and Indianapolis. He's kind of the anti-Bobby Petrino, or better yet, the anti-Buzz Petersen.

No way in hell Fancher is even briefly considered for the Head Coaching position. Only reason he got interim head coach is because all the other assistants want to move on ASAP.

Amazing that you could be fired here at a middle of the pack, low mid major conference football school and end up coaching at a job 10000x better (on an interim basis of course)

HB have you ever heard the old saying it is better to keep your mouth shut and have everyone think you're a fool than to open it an remove all doubt? Well, you just removed all doubt. Houston was retained as the interim coach because he was not on the staff when these violations took place. All the other assiatants were docked a substantial part of their salary during the past season and shown the door with Bruce. I'd suggest you keep your trap shut if you don't know what you're talking about.

HF is a genuinely good guy. They need someone to run a good clean, above-board program while they find Pearl's replacement, and he'll do that. Gosh knows he cleaned up the mess Buzz left the first time he was at App. Buzz wouldn't deal with the thugs he had on the team because they helped him build his resume, and to Houston's credit, at the first hiccup he got em out of here. Of course they WERE stealing from their teammates, among other things.

I know he will not get a shot at the job, and thats fine, I understand, but they could do much, much worse. Hopefully he'll get to stay on in a position more deserving of his abilities as a senior assistant, or such.

I'm sure UT won't be calling the Buzzard but I wouldn't put it past him to call UT.

I'd make the worst interim coach.

I think it would be funny if state hired Pearl. They are throwing some mad money at their future coach. I doubt the creamsicles will keep HF on the paid staff.

Maybe State will hire Buzz and let Pearl be his assistant.

Congrats to Houston Fancher but UT will just use him to keep things together and then the new coach lets him go but hope not. I agree… no way UT will make contact with Buzz, been there done that, plus he or someone would have to pay UNCW a bundle to get out of his contract. NC State needs to move quickly or UT may beat them out of their top choice on their wish list.
