A historic draft night for App State

Wagons West, young men … Wagons West!

For the first time in school history, three App State players have been drafted by professional franchises. All three went within 30 picks of each other.

With the 156th pick in the fifth round of the NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks chose Mark Legree, aka. the Man of Steal.

Hero returns home today

Arrangements – “Terry will be returning home to the mountains at 10:50 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Asheville Regional Airport. Memorials may be made to the Terry Varnadore II Memorial Fund, c/o Edward Jones, 5046 Boylston Highway, Ste. 5, Mills River, NC 28759 or to Mills River United Methodist Church, Terry Varnadore, II Memorial Fund, 137 Old Turnpike Road, Mills River, NC 28759.”

So who’s watching the Draft?

They are – “OT Daniel Kilgore and S Mark LeGree will watch the draft on ESPN and the NFL Network in Boone. LB D.J. Smith will watch from his home in Charlotte.” Also, the Icon may not be a lock at No. 1. Cause when not one of four QBs can get the job done, the problem is obviously not the QB.

The big college prospect beauty pageant/career fair – aka. NFL Draft – begins tonight, with dreamboat Cam Newton the according-to-the-experts consensus No. 1 pick by our .. /deep sigh … Carolina Panthers.

More importantly, App State may match school history this year, if not surpass it.

There’s a chance … a slight chance …. three Apps could hear their names.

There have been three NFL drafts in which two Mountaineers were selected. In 1990, OT Derrick Graham . . . → Read More: Workouts over, the long wait begins

More national numbers on athletic subsidies

Forbes looks at institutional support – “Perhaps you noticed that 9 of the top 10 programs in terms of total dollars received are from the Big East and ACC. Turns out even if you sort the data by percentage of total revenue the same holds true, with only Mississippi State moving into the list in place of Auburn.”

Mountaineer lost in Afghanistan

Hero – “U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Terry Varnadore of Mills River died Saturday while serving in Afghanistan. Varnadore is survived by his wife, Casey, who is seven months pregnant, and a 4-year-old daughter, relatives said.” He graduated from App State in 2003. According to his pastor, “he died a hero because he took over the controls as his helicopter went down, and his co-pilot survived.”

Baseball thread – App State at Davidson

Oh no! – “Arrowood’s 22.1-inning scoreless streak snapped with misplayed popup.” Then, OH! NO! – “Arrowood’s night has come to a premature end due to an apparent ankle injury.” Apparently some MLB scouts at the game. There’s a 6 pm game Friday, and 2 pm finale series Saturday.
