The very fine VaTech site Gobbler Country asked us to answer a few questions about the Border War Saturday. We happily obliged, and it’s now online at their place. Among the questions, “What has made the ASU offense so effective in recent years?”, and “What’s it going to take for ASU to pull the upset?” Enjoy.

FINALLY it’s preseason preview time here at AppFan. We’re calling it Over/Under 2011. Every few days we’ll throw out our best guess estimate of a future stat, and you tell us why we’re wrong.
Over/Under – How many points will App State score at Va. Tech: 14
In their last nine FBS contests, the Apps put up an average of 13.67 points. The low-point was a shutout at LSU back in 2005. The All-Time Upset broke the bank with . . . → Read More: O/U – What’s App puttin’ on the board Sat

So who’s going to the Big Game? Can you see your seat here? Where’s the good food hiding before kickoff? Let everyone know. Sadly, we won’t have an official presence at the game, but we will be out and about. The alumni people have a set up, and rumor is these guys will be there.

Withstand – “The biggest thing when you play Va Tech is surviving the first quarter,” Matthews said. “They blow everybody out in the first quarter at Lane Stadium. I told the kids, ‘Let’s make sure it’s a game at the end of the first quarter. Let’s survive the noise and the crowd.’” And they did.

App State’s set. Four freshmen starting, including two on O-line, one on D-line. Another 11(!) are O and D backups. Three sophomores also starting. What about dem Hokies? – “The youth and inexperience for the Hokies, especially after the first team defense, is staggering.”

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer gushed all over some App State yesterday.
The love got so intense, local media felt the need to actually fact check the affection.
Verdict – The man knows what he’s talking about.
Appalachian State, he said, is the “winningest program, I think, in the last six years at both levels” of Division I.
The point is, Beamer, who touts every opponent as a “dangerous crowd,” is right. Sort of.

It’s game week.
/pauses … savors moment
The Border War is just six days away. And according to an NBC sports site, it’s No. 6 on the top matchups for the weekend.
In all likelihood this isn’t a game you’re gonna stick with all the way through. It’s more of a “just in case” deal.
Everybody remembers the shocking 2007 opener when Appy State toppled mighty Michigan. And most everyone has some recollection of James Madison’s incomprehensible victory . . . → Read More: NBC says Border War should be on national radar

It’s a longstanding internet meme that big news comes in threes. It’s a magic number, after all.
A few days ago the school unofficially officially announced it was going FBS (#1). Days later the Return was announced (#2).
Which got us thinking? What’s next? Cause there has to be a next. Everything comes in threes!

Waiting – “SMU AD Steve Orsini believes his school is ready to join a BCS conference and has made his case to certain Big 12 officials. SMU averaged 23,515 fans in 2010, a 52 percent increase in the past five years.” Big 12 aside, SMU says it’s ready to “join any AQ conference”

Packers beat Colts, 24-21, in preseason play last night. App State great DJ Smith (No. 51) had three stops, including a sack.
The undersized inside linebacker had a sack on 3rd down, and was very close to making a huge run stop on a 3rd down conversion. He reminds me of Desmond Bishop back in his rookie season when he surprised me by looking good enough to make the team. I expect Smith too will make the team because . . . → Read More: Smith gets a sack

FINALLY it’s preseason preview time here at AppFan. We’re calling it Over/Under 2011. Every few days we’ll throw out our best guess estimate of a future stat, and you tell us why we’re wrong.
Last season, App State’s O-line allowed just 9 sacks in 13 games. That cement wall was due in part to a quarterback more mobile than a cell phone brand, but also thanks to a veteran front five that started 11 of 12 games.

Intrepidation – “Why? Seriously. Why? This makes as much sense as returning to the back stage dressing room where the actor playing Mr. Mistoffelees touched you inappropriately twenty years ago, just to see if the room’s still there. It’s still there. It happened. Oh God, the memories. Why in God’s name did you go back there again?” Second opinion? /giggle
