Game thread – The one not in doubt

Fun with phonicsHistory – “Savannah State, an FCS team in its first full season in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, hasn’t had a winning season since 1998. It has had five coaches in seven seasons and has won just three of its past 21 games.” Let’s make it 3 in past 22! We’re looking for more DP to Quick goodness, a couple of 100 yards rushers and a shutout. That too much to ask?

starters better get their stats in the first half. We may not win by 50, but the backups will play the whole second half.

  • AppOrange

I think our freshman starters could use the work actually.

  • nomadb

The weather has turned beautiful here in Boone….sun is out and it's about 55 degrees.

    Go Fall and Go APP!

  • Fleetwood App

The Fleetwood is getting ready to hit THE ROCK. Let's get it on!!!!!

  • appstategrad2008

I miss fall weather already… I'm not sure what kind of fall happens here in Southern California. It's certainly not here yet!

  • Joe

Appstategrad, I was born and raised in socal… The fall lasts maybe 1 week and usually consists of awful Santa Anna winds.. I am not envious of you!

  • appstategrad2008

Ha… I don't look forward to it, but I'm sure they can't be any worse than some of the winds during the winter in Boone! Those are just downright brutal!

  • apppreacher

At Sagebrush then headed up to The Rock for the sacrifice!!

  • ukappfan

I wish i could be at the game. I live in Miami and its 90 right now. I miss the mountains and fall!

  • ASUGradinLA

Being a socal local myself I can relate, I miss the crisp fall weather…

  • appstategrad2008

Nice to know there's another App in L.A.!

  • Johnboy

My working thesis for this game is that Savannah is not as bad as believed. I've always thought Albany State had a good team. Welton played there last year.

  • mountaineermaniac

Family vacation to the beach this week. Listening to David and Steve on goasu. Are we debuting jersey's today or are they the same gold jersey's as last year?

  • mountaineermaniac

Why are Gainey and Tanyi suspended for today???

  • VAN - ASU CLASS OF 9

Gainey suspended before game? what happened?

  • appstategrad2008

Tanyi and Gainey suspended for this game by Coach Moore according to David Jackson… haven't said why just yet.

  • Johnboy

Tanyi and Gainey suspended for the game!

  • johnfoxsucks

We probably don't need to guess why Gainey is suspended. He's a shady character anyway. My guess is his mouth, fighting, or the law.

  • snwbrdro

    Wondering the same thing.

  • snwbrdro

david did say that they would discuss further shortly.

  • Johnboy

Surprised by Tany- whatever it was must of happened in last 24 hours. Offense cut through like butter. Love seeing Brewer out there- smart player!

  • Johnboy

Brewer has paid his dues and is a worthy captain. Cadet doesn't get the yards Devon Moore got last year. Not exactly sure why.

  • snwbrdro

what happened to throwing down field? 3rd and 4 and we continue to run. What a punter we have though!

  • snwbrdro

secondary better tighten up before Chattanooga's gun slinger comes to town. He will eat us alive if we can't stop the pass better.

  • mountaineermaniac

What's the crowd look like tonight?

  • snwbrdro

pretty decent from the sound of it. haven't really shown it yet. i would say 25,000, around that number with the forecast.

  • Johnboy

Savannah getting their share of the clock. I am trying to reserve judgment.

  • Johnboy

I would have loved to have seen V Techs field goal unit.

  • Appland

Wish I could be there! To far from Philadelphia.

  • Sway

From what I can see on goasu tv the crowd looks pretty dismal. Student section still looks good though. But they need to learn to SHUT UP while we are on offense. My gosh, they were louder while we had the ball than when we were on defense. I hope we can bring a bigger and definitely LOUDER crowd next week against Nooga. And our secondary must improve before next week or we are going to get picked apart or at the least struggle tremendously.

  • snwbrdro

no need to reserve judgement. the secondary is talented but have no clue what they are being told to do. they are giving 5-10 yard cushions all day long and they are taking advantage of it.

  • kyle

#4 tackles like a big vagina. where's mcduffie?

  • snwbrdro

the crowd will definitely be better next week, barring good weather. Missed pass but wasn't our fault. guy was open but qb throws it in the wrong place. secondary please cover wr's. i wouldn't run the ball against us if i was an opponent and you can believe chatty will pass heavy.

  • carbine

Glad to hear the audio is cleared up today. Last week was awful. Now if we could just do something about that pass defense.

  • carbine

    There, that's better!

  • snwbrdro

but we also need pressure on the qb. heard all off season of how the 3-4 d will allow us to blitz from all over the field. Where is it? lets see it.

  • snwbrdro

absolutely ridiculous that we can not get them off the field.

  • carbine

    Spoke too soon.

  • Sway

And every time (from what I've seen) we get a good push on the line we leave the middle of the field WIDE OPEN for the QB to run. And they just keep passing and passing and passing and….you guessed it….passing. Still think we will put a W on the board but next week is going to be interesting. Wow, just saw a shot of the student section while the APP-STATE chant was going on and about 80% of the people weren't saying a thing. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the students to take part in cheering? Do they even realize what school they came to?

  • snwbrdro

That is pressure on the qb!!!

  • AppOrange

    running game not looking sharp

  • snwbrdro

gotta be kidding me! 3 and out!!!

  • appstategrad2008

Sam Martin should definitely get a look from NFL teams if he keeps this up… he's been phenomenal!

  • carbine

    That sounded nice.

    DP to Quick, 17-0.

  • Johnboy

Good game- Baker more effective than Cadet today. More Savannah offense than expected..

  • snwbrdro

hell yes. QUICK is the man!!!!

  • Johnboy

Love seeing so much talent! Go Lott!

  • Johnboy

Championship teams make that play. Thank God we did.

  • AppOrange

    Sam Martin is unbelievable

  • Dizzle

Tuning in from Milwaukee, WI. We're looking good today!

  • AppOrange

Watching the James Madison/Liberty game, pretty impressed with Liberty's facilities. 2 tier home side (full), huge jumbo-tron, nice press box, etc. I had no idea . . .

  • 2guard

The scheduling of Savannah is another Cobb blunder. Does he think this will enhance a move to D-1?

  • AppDawg

At game… East stand bare. Lucky to Have capacity crowd. 22K or 23K max. Poor competition and "weather" (which isn't bad, just typical boone overcast) keeping people away.

  • Johnboy

We never seem to anticipate the punt fake.

  • A.Freeman

Someone please tell the camera man we dont have to zoom in so far on everyplay

  • snwbrdro

any more word on gainey/tanyi suspension?

  • A.Freeman

Its nice to hear these freshman's names being called out making sack plays!

  • AppOrange

I agree with someone above, we are giving too much cushion and giving them 6 free yards every time

  • loveithere

We are not very good in the secondary. Hope we can have our best offensive game of the year next week so that we can outscore them. BJ Coleman is very good. Worried already.

  • AppOrange

Elon took the lead by 1 with less than 40 seconds to go to beat NCCU by 1. Looks like Eloan may be in for a long year

  • Fleetwood App

Any word on why Gainey and Tanyi were suspended?

  • dixiedawg80

DJ said that coach Moore would address the gainey/tanyi suspension later in the week. It appears it was a gametime decision.

  • Appy97,00

Anyone know anything about #77, Alex Acey? He's been the starting center every game thus far, but there is know info on him on goasu.com. Nor, could I find him on the list of recruited commitments this year. He looks pretty good out there. Just wondering if he was a walk-on. I found an Alexander Acey come up on an Auburn recruiting site….probably only because he's from Alabama, though.

  • Appstate19

Appy97,00: Acey is a walk on from Birmingham

  • Appy97,00

looks like another walk-on (Acey) beat out a couple of veteran guys for the spot, then.

  • apppreacher

Attendance announced on wataugademocrat.com was 24917

  • The rock

Our walk on center needs more practice. Almost every snap is low and/or to the side. The split second that DP has to adjust to catch the ball takes a little momentum away from the play.

I am not suprised about Gainey, (whatever he did) but am disappointed because he is a captain. Also disappointed with Tanyi, he is a key part of our D and after sitting out all last year, I was glad to have him back.

Good to see Middleton getting much good play time today, he is a solid player that hustles and is taking advantage of his opportunities.

Would have liked to see Ben jorden get some looks this week. Also, there is so much buzz around bobo, but he barely gets on the field. He is quick, but cadet does all the return work.

Cadet gets too much play time. He gets the majority of carries, and does occasionally get good yardage, but more hard yards and big plays come from baker-Boney and miller. Plus cadet dances east and west too much. Just keep up the momentum and get as many north and south yards as possible. PLEASE END THE CADET LOVE AFFAIR.

our corners better have a come-to-Jesus meeting before next week and all of conference play.

  • The tock

Sam Martin is awesome!!! Can't say enough good things about him.

Jon rizor is a beast. He is going to put up some big numbers this year.

Miller made some really nice plays. He is small and quick, but a hard runner that is tough to bring down.

The DP-BQ TD was beautiful and a perfect pass

JJ TD run at the end was awesome too.

We are a young team, but are stacked with talent. We could be in position to a VERY tough team in a year or so with the right use of talent.

  • mtnjax

I think the corner problem could be improved if Middleton plays over Walker. He was getting abused on man to man coverage

  • The rock

I don't think I had even heard of walker before tonight. He did get burnt often, but did come up with some good plays. Gainey will retake his spot if he stops screwing up and gets back on the field. Hope we don't leave those 6-8 yd routes open next week, or we will get abused.

  • Joe

Walker is a WR by trade.. He was converted to cb last off season, and is still adjusting. If he continues to progress, he will be a good cb..

  • Apps_Aj11

1.) The secondary is soft. Chatty will tear them apart.

2.) The DEs and D-Lineman did a very nice job wrapping up tackles, IMO. #96 had one of the most awesome sacks I have ever seen at KBS.

3.) Offense is still inconsistent. I know it is beyond cliche (especially on this board) but the playcalling is still pathetic.

4.) Why in the world do the coaches like Cadet so much? It is baffling to me. I am not saying he is not a talented player. But he is not the second coming of Barry Sanders. #3 Miller is much better at RB… again IMO.

5.) I have a very bad feeling about the Stink and Chatty at home. I agree with a previous poster in that we are stacked with talent. However, I see little discipline and very little execution. Savannah Freakin' State passed for 240+ yards on us… So far this season every thing I have expected has unfortunately come to pass. We got slaughtered by VT, rely way to heavily on Cadet, ignore weapons like Ben Jordon, and have very poor playcalling.

6.) What did Ben Jorden do to get ignored so badly? He was not thrown to even once.

  • cbarrier90

All I know is that I hear names like McGowan, Middleton, and Robinson an awful lot in these first few weeks. If they keep getting better, this team is going to be scary good in 3 or 4 years.

We'll learn alot about this team next week. I for one think they'll be up to the task.

  • loveithere

goasu.com said Jorden was out with an injury. I can see giving up alot of 5-6 yard passes if you are playing a team that you are afraid can beat you deep. However, against Savannah we should be playing a little tighter coverage. Also, the weakness of both the 4-3 and the 3-4 (the last 2 defenses we have run). Is that they are weak against passes in the flats. We are gonna have to mix our coverages more to slow Coleman down next week.

  • section212

Just a couple observations from the game:

    - Crowd was a little lethargic, but there was never much doubt given the opponent. I expect it to crank up a few notches next week. (Note to students: don't startup the App-State chant when we're on offense and DP is trying to call the play)

    - The secondary was soft. #4 was picked on, but he's converting over from WR, and he did get a pick late in the game. Hopefully, Gainey will get his head on straight and play well next week. If not, Middleton looks like a natural lock down corner and could be the answer.

    - Playcalling was vanilla because they didn't have to get creative. I don't understand the griping after a 35 pt win. Why show our SoCon opponents our playbook to help them gameplan???

    - The new running back, Miller, has got to be the quickest player on the team and doesn't go down easy. I feel a lot better about our running game w/ Baker-Boney and Miller. Cadet seems better at screens & swing passes where he can get into space to make plays.

    - Don't care if that freshman DE, #96/Robinson, only weighs 235, if he can hit the QB like he did yesterday, start him every game!

    - As everyone else has said, pass coverage has got to improve next week, and the CB's can't let the UTC receivers get behind them or it will be a long day. Pressure on the QB will oviously help.

    - Not sure what the plan is for the o-line, but still very concerned about our size between the tackles. We can get away w/ it against these teams, but probably not in conference games.

    - Sam Martin is a weapon and I would be shocked if he isn't playing on Sundays.

  • App Band

Ditto on the chants & cheers when we're on offense….gotta be QUIET! I like the spirit and enthusiasm, but save it for the DEFENSE. Then make it DEAFENING!!!!

  • The rock

The loudest the crowd got was when we were on offense. I think the university should educate incoming freshman as to when to make noise, and the purpose it serves. I appreciate the enthusiasm, it just needs to come at the right times.
