Next: Into the dog house

We see ..... shredded fingernails and broken teeth in our futureApp State continues SoCon play with the team that took the shine off the All-time Upset. Here are Four Downs.

1st Down – Wanting … Waiting … Needing.
In 2007, Wofford brought App State back to turf, hard, with a 42-31 win at their place. Since then the Mountaineers have owned the dogs, ripping off three Ws by an average score of 52-24. Both teams were SoCon champs last season, and the dogs want this one … bad – “Before time even expired on the Gibbs Stadium scoreboard clock Saturday night in a 38-23 victory against Samford, players from Wofford admitted, they were already thinking about the next one. “Once we had secured the win,” Wofford junior linebacker Mike Niam said, “I was thinking, ‘All right. We’ve got App now.'”

2nd Down – Happy feet
As is annually the case, Wofford continues to have one of the top rushing offenses in the nation. So far it’s averaging 356 yards a game, including 272 in a 7-point loss at Clemson. That’s the most ground gains the Tigers have given up so far this season (Auburn second with 237). Statistically, App State has a decent rushing defense (124 yards a game), but it hasn’t been really tested in three weeks.

3rd Down – Flag football
Through three games the Terriers have been the flag magnets in the league. They’ve been called for a league-high 26 penalties for a loss of a league-high 250. That included 11 penalties for 121 yards against Presbyterian. This is especially out of character for Wofford, which usually one of the least penalized teams in the league.

4th Down – Seeing red
Saturday will pit two of the league’s better red zone defenses against each other. Wofford has defended 12 such incursions, and stopped four (two resulted in FGS). App State, meanwhile, has defended 16 red zone stances, stopping five and forcing four FGs (one missed).

If you remember the 2007 game in Spartanburg, Armanti was still suffering from injury but was leading the team to what looked like a victory. Just before half, one of the Wofford defenders grabbed him slung him around and smashed him into the ground on his bad shoulder. That put Armanti out for several weeks. Trey Elder came in as replacement and the game was in doubt until we went for it on 4th down deep in Wofford territory as time was running out. The score was 35 to 31 Wofford at that time. We didn't convert, they take a couple of knees, game over. But instead of taking a knee, those SOBs decided to go for another score. The reason we put 70 on them the next year on Halloween

I couldn't disagree with you more, asu7. After last weeks defensive performance, I feel more confident going into this weekends game than I did last week. The D stepped up HUGE and I don't see any reason they won't do the same this weekend. We've usually had a strong run defense and we've shut them down the last couple of games. All I heard last year was how good Eric Breitenstein was & how he was going to run all over us. Taking nothing away from him, he's a great talent, but that was far from the truth.

App always seems to step it up in big games, and this one is just as big, if not bigger than last week, since we are playing away.

Assignment football is the name of the game here. I'm curious to see how our new 3-4 scheme will fair against a TO offense.

    September 27, 2011 at 6:46 am

If we get beat by a private college with enrollments of 1,468, this coaching staff will come under fire like you've never seen before. This game should not even be close on paper.

I hate to add to the negativity that plaques every thread on Appfan, but I think we might lose this one. Our team tends to fall asleep in this kind of atmosphere and I don't think our offense is ready for another stingy defense. Wofford is the biggest mystery in the conference as far as I'm concerned. An almost win against Clemson followed by an almost loss to Presby? huh?

Midwest – thanks for reminding us how irrelevant your contributions are .. not that we needed a reminder.

ASU QC – while our defense looked really good last week, the offense Chattanooga runs has zero similarities to the offense we'll see at Wofford. Our change to the 3-4 has been engineered to stop the option-style offenses that Wofford and Georgia Southern run so, in theory, we should be strong but we haven't had any game that has tested that theory.

Our defense will have to play very disciplined and not bite on the play-fakes and mis-direction.

Offensively we have to completely abort the current play-calling logic and return to a more spread-out attack that opens up running lanes and forces their defense to make plays in the open field. Last week Chattanooga put 8 in the box and we made it easy for them by repeatedly running our QB within the box. Doesn't make sense. Never has, never will.

  12. Deano

    September 27, 2011 at 7:17 am

I completely agree with your logic. It will be interesting to see how our new defense plays against this wishbone style of offense. I have really complained alot about our play calling on offense, but all we need is 4 yards every play, we don't need 40 yard pass plays although long passes once in awhile do tend to put more pressure on defenses. With Woffords style of offense, the slow grind it out, only pass occasionally type of offense, we will probably have less possesions due to the amount of time these offenses can consume. So that means that we just have to play clean, make good decisions and not try and reinvent the wheel. We have better athletes than they do, but what it will take to win on game day with a match like this is greater determination.

  13. asu7

    September 27, 2011 at 7:25 am

I am not worried about the D QC … I am worried about the O.

Woofurd is going to get their rushing yards, they always do. However, if we can't score with them we are in trouble and nothing proved to me last week that our O can score points.

Our D has not yet played a TO attack and Nooga is nothing like woofurd or da stink. Our D will be tested the entire game, they better be ready.

Our O has to got to get back to the Spread. I don't even know what we are doing right now besides running the ball up the middle when 8 guys are in the box. The play calling must change this week. MUST CHANGE.

Watching the D this weekend gave me hope…unfortunately I'm much more pessimistic about the Wofford game assuming the likely one-game suspension of Kimbrough. This guy is the leader of the defense and without him and Tanya, the other guys will have to step up big time. Also, if there's any truth to the rumors swirling around regarding Tanya and Gainey the D and maybe the team as a whole have got to be at least a little distracted. Regardless the game

on Saturday is going to tell us quite a bit more about this team's heart.

I predict the offense turns things around this week and we win in a tight one. Very nervous about this one though.

Here is what I do not like about the game:

    1. A completely new defensive sceme with two freshmen d linemen in their first test aginst a program 20+ years into the tripled options.

    2. The prospectively of no Tanyi or Kimbrough

    3. we haven't played 60 minutes well at Wofford in a long time.

What I like about the game is:

    1. We out athletes Wofford more than Amy other team in the conference.

    2. Quick and Jorden have had their best games against Wofford each year

    3. Stretching the field has been common place in the game plan against Wofford for years.

    4. We know what they are going to do.

The TO is nearly always about execution. I will pick us to win, but this is a very big game and we could easily lose it. Turnovers are game changers like no other. I am excited. This is great football, despite what Midwest will tell us.

I don't know if anyone else noticed, but his snaps are VERY slow and Sam Martin looked very uncomfortable and rushed in his punts. Wil Fitchett was in on PAT's and field goals, so why not on punts? Wil is a 4-year starter and a pre-season all american the last two years.

  62. LetsgoApps

    September 27, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I realize that Fitchett was hurt in the VA Tech game. It was stated by Coach Moore that Sawyer will be doing the longsnapping for the remainder of the season and Fitchett will be in on PAT's and FG's. The snap on the FG attempt wasn't great, but it wasn't that bad, and I don't remember the snap being bad on the missed PAT the week before. Fitchett is a great longsnapper, and if he were just taller, he would have a chance to make it in the NFL. All I'm saying is that Sawyer's snaps are too slow for him to be doing the longsnapping. This will become a real negative as we play teams that start going after punts, something the Mocs didn't do.

  63. clayton

    September 28, 2011 at 1:50 am

The snap/hold caused the missed FG. The snap wasn't great and the holder took an extra beat to place it. Made Martin stutter step.

This celabration thing has been hurting us for a long time and the coaches just don't think it is a big deal so why should he? doesnt the 15 yard penalty apply to the kickoff? if thats correct the only way they will get the ball out to the 40 or 50 is if our kickoff squad fails to tackle him in time because sam martin will still kick the ball through the field goal posts 🙂 however, sarcasm aside i agree. these penalties plague us. it has been said that we might lose a game because of them. with kimbrough out for woffie, it's Possible that could come this saturday. i am more optimistic than that. our team hates wofford. we will pummel them!

  70. asu7

    September 28, 2011 at 4:29 am

See the problem is the refs talk and they say you know that APP team gets a lot of flags so watch them …

So they pay attention to every little thing we do and flag it because of past years teams and their infractions. They watch us more than the other team and we are going to get called for penalties more than the other team. This will only stop if we go a few years without doing anything stupid.

  71. 212

    September 28, 2011 at 4:38 am

Martin isn't on the kickoff coverage, that would be Mark Powell. Anytime a 15 yard penalty is added to the kickoff, I'd just prefer the coaches have the kicker boot it out of bounds and give the opposing team the ball on the 40. The best we can hope for is to stop them at the 35, what's another 5 yards compared to the alternative of giving them a huge return that results in 1) a TD 2) great field position and 3) momentum?

Hopefully JK will not have to sit out. The defense needs him anchoring the middle, especially against Wofford's vaunted TO attack. Why have we not "officially" heard anything from the conference or university about a suspension?

With only 4 returning defensive starters (Wylie, Rizor, Sanders and Grier) who faced the Terriers last year and 4 freshman starting this year, the offense has to step up in a big way to help offset the inexperience the defense has in stopping the TO.

  79. appfantoo

    September 28, 2011 at 5:21 am

Apparently you guys didn't actually see what Kimbrough did.

Every player in America knows you can't take your helmet off while you are still on the field. After his interception return for a TD he took his helmet off while in the back of the end zone and slowly made his way back toward our sideline.

He knew the rule and ignored it – but, I can somewhat let that one slide giving him a break for the emotion and excitement packed into that play.

The second time was just pure arrogance and ignorance. As the clock was winding down Kimbrough walked over directly in front of a referee, looked at him while it appeared he was talking to the ref, and pulled his helmet off no more than 2 feet from the face of the referee. He then put his helmet back on and walked off as the referee was throwing the flag.

I looked up and saw him as he was putting his helmet back on and turning to walk away. Friends in our group watched the entire situation and described it to me.

I don't know what was said and I don't know if perhaps Kimbrough thought time had expired when he removed his helmet. But from the stands it certainly looked like he was taunting the referee – what else could he have been doing?

Personally, I think the excessive celebration penalties when there are no other clear infractions such as this are ridiculous and take way from the excitement and fun these kids should enjoy when they score a touchdown.

But Kimbrough knows better, he should represent our school better, and I'm glad he is sitting out.

Apparently it was 11 seconds left. The final penalty was with 11 seconds left. What a stupid rule and stupid flag. The whole damn things is stupid.

On a kickoff out of bounds the ball is not automatically placed on the 35. The receiving team can choose to make you kick it again, which in the situation discussed earlier would put it on the 10, or take the ball 35 yards from where the ball was kicked, which would put it on the 50

The point I was making was that when we have to move the ball back teams have been running it back on us to the 40 or 50. We don't have a kicker that has been kicking it into the endzone anyway.

    Loveithere is correct.

you're right, i wasnt even thinking.

i'm not being a tool. it is annoying. everyone wants to feel like they are on the inside scoop. fine. we went through this same thing in the summer with one of the basketball players. im not confirming this "rumor" because like the rest of you, it is all 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th hand information. that is not reliable. that is not even Twitter feed reliable. I will reserve judgment for when a STATEMENT is made regarding FACT and not something you heard from an assistant athletic trainer who wants to flaunt his "knowledge" anyway.
