Don't Miss

Prediction thread – Beware the rush

beware the nibblesEverybody knows Wofford’s reputation. They eat more yards than snowmold. They don’t pass much (31 atts on season, 13 completed) but do so when least expected. (3 passing TDs). App State, meanwhile, allowed season-high rushing yardage for Va Tech (256; +44 over avg) and, er, NC Central (167; +50). Last year the dogs went for just 189 against the Apps, second fewest that season. New year. New App defense. O/U: Rushing yards gained by Wofford Saturday – 250.

I'm going with over but we still win due to a lights out performance by our disgruntled offense.

I haven't heard a thing about Woffords D….all I ever hear/see is about their rushing attack….how is their D this year?

Without Kimbrough…over, maybe way over! Just hope the offense can keep up. IMO we need to be utilizing Quick's skills and size advantage more. We need to throw it to him until they stop it and if they can't keep feeding it to him!! Rumor has it that he is the 5th or 6th top rated WR coming from any level. Yet we only traget him a few times per game. What's up!!! How ya gonna stop this……..the answer is… can't!!!/photo.php?fbid=1207597

I don't understand a lot of people on here. Seems everyone thinks we should pass the ball every play. I'm all for throwing it to Quick, and everyone else for that matter.

However, when we have had the most success, we have been balanced. I want us to be successful running the ball and passing. I love to see our running backs break off a long run. If that isn't working I agree we should pass more, but you can't abandon the run entirely. The read option is the cornerstone of our spread.

I even think the pass can be used to open up the run, and I would love to see us use the backs out of the backfield more effectively. But the sentiment of pass pass pass every down is retarted.

Under….if not…just 10-20 yards over. I really like our chances. We are all so worried about JK not playing. Keep in mind, he wasnt the only man on the defensive side of the ball last week that played so well.

Our D stepped up big last year for this game and stepped up HUGE last week. They are riding momentum and i have faith that our coaches will have these guys focused and ready to shut down this TO.

Just Over, but we still win. I think our offense comes back alive this game. I don't think it will be very high scoring because Wofford's offense can eat up alot of clock. I say 28-17 in favor of APP.

You are right, our offense works best when we are more balanced, but we haven't been truly balanced since Kevin Richardson left. What was great about those days is when Kevin was having a hard time getting yardage up the middle, they would give him a screen pass or throw him a short dump pass right out of the backfield. He was a great pass catcher for a running back. This is something our offense is yet to do use our running backs more in short passes if the straight run is not working. This makes one defender dedicate himself to following the running back at all times, taking him out of his gap.

    September 29, 2011 at 9:01 am

Didn't Clemson give up 287 playing their first string the whole game?

Somewhere between 350-400. We can still win the game giving up that kind of yardage on the ground, because they won't get much in the air. However, we are going to have to score.

    September 29, 2011 at 9:25 am

Nobody on here is talking about Wofford's defense. I think that is a mistake to overlook that aspect of their team.

There is a good chance that they eat up a lot of clock on O while their D holds App. to a lot of short possessions.

I think the time of possession and turnover margin will favor Wofford. Will the final score though?

I concure as well. I feel that when Jerry and staff put in the spread it was wildly successfull because Jerry found ways to use the benefits of the spread and the power I attacks to our addvantage. Yes the run opens up the pass, yes the pass opens up the run. Most importantly the run controls the clock! Not only does the run control the clock, with the exception of App last weekend, its hard to score when the other team has the ball. Speeding up the game(jet mode) is merely a way to take advantage of matchups that favor us and a defense that isnt ready for whats coming.

Not sure who is calling plays now, but I refer them to APP STATE film from 06 and 07'. The run works the body and the pass throws the knockout punches!

I agree that K Rich was a complete back and we have missed him. We have very good running backs, but just haven't been able to consistently put it all together as far as passing, running, and throwing wheel routes/screens to the backs.

I still believe we can do all those things, we're still Appalachian State! Here's hoping we put it all together this weekend against the puppies, and have an offensive breakout. Just wish this game was at the Rock. Have to win on the road to get the ring though.

"The Young Guns" step it up and do what they were recruited for! I see the talent level in the young guys that hunter, murrell, krich, lynch had as seniors. The differnece is, the list I just named respected the game and wanted to learn how to be the best, not just because they were bigger, faster, stronger. Cause they weren't! They dug deep ever game and played with heart everytime they stepped onto that field. They knew what it meant to be a Mountaineer, play for coaches, teammates, and fans that support you.

We must get back to our wide open unpredictable offense of a few years back. I see the skills in J. Jackson to be much more favorable in the passing attack. Leave DP in their rotating him, Cadet, & Baker-Boney in 2 back sets…….or use them as together with a mixture of packages at receiver. Old App State ball would have had several trick plays considering Cadet came in as a QB, DP, & J. Jackson are all talented…..We have speed and talent for heavens sake get creative and use it! Lets open it up a little……..AND FOR GOODNESS SAKE THROW BRIAN QUICK THE D@&N BALL! He will go get just throw it up there!

One of the biggest differences I have seen in the running game since KRich left, is that we seem to be palying running back by committee. I see Baker-Boney as a KRich type back who gets better the more carries he has, but we switch backs so often, none of them get in a rhythm. Let Baker-Boney have the majority of carries, with Cadet and Miller thrown in for the swing passes and the occasional change of pace running.

Our DB's proved they can cover man-2-man last week, so take that same tactic this week. Stack 8 in the box, stay focused, and shut down that pee-wee league offense. Once they get inside the 20, they won't be able to punch it in. Our red zone d has been incredible this season.

They go over, but most of that will be between the 20's.

What are the chances we run some 4-3 with big boys Wylie & Aiken clogging up the middle to counteract the TO?

Anyone have an opinion whether the 4-3 is a better alignment against the TO, or is the 3-4 just as effective? Guess much of that depends on execution…

Over, but good red zone D and turnovers can be the difference.

A quick offensive start makes life a lot easier. I still think that we can out athlete Wofford to the point that they get flustered. The defensive game plan is in place. Tackle and spread them out and we can win the toughest road game we play.

It is always the same with the triple option. Make it 2nd/3rd and long. They won't have a chance. If its 2nd/3rd and short, we better watch out. Losing Kimbrough hurts because he could have "DJ Smithed" Eric B.

Their receivers average 25 yards a catch. They don't throw it often, but they go down the field when they do. That's why Legree got so many INTs against them.

If we force them to throw, we kill them. If they throw because they want to, they kill us.

I also agree with Boonedocks "The read option is the cornerstone of our spread" however, i have yet to see DP make a read much less use an option. against UTC there were several plays to where a pitch to an uncovered TC7 would have gained modest yardage, instead, DP lowered his head & was met at the line. On passing plays – option one is stared down, option 2…please refer back to option 1 because DP is still staring him down, option 3 is wide open in the middle, but again, please refer back to option 1 because he is still being stared down & now thrown to under coverage.

    September 30, 2011 at 4:41 pm

If we can somehow hold them to 250 yards or less on the ground we win this game by a ton…. I mean like Halloween night a ton.

I know Jerry won't do it but if DP is struggling with the offense by half, he needs to pull him and put in JJ. Deandre had more weapons on offense last year to bail him out as his passing accuracy is terrible. When we were winning national championships Armanti was laser accurate (to go along with his wonderful running ability). With the spread offense, you have to pass first to open up the run and right now that just isn't the case with DP.

I don't think dp is calling for a cadet run up the middle. Last week we didn't get a pass game going because we called run up middle x2 and a qb keeper. I place that on the coaches. Hopefully this week we allow dp to throw and use baker-Boney and miller as RBs to get our run game going.

Deandre is not armanti. Jamal is not armanti. No one will be as accurate and quick and truly a dual threat like armanti. Deandre IS a pretty good qb, he just doesnt look as good because he continues to be compared to armanti.

Disagree. Dp doesn't look good because he isn't performing plain and simple. I don't think richie had one game besides the lsu game where we didn't score on offense.

It doesn't matter who u compare him too, he still hasn't shown that he can get us to another nat champ

Here is the bottom line. It is all up to the O line. If they get to DP he gets shook and bad things happen. If we give him protection he is a fairyl good QB or let me say he performs well.
