Don't Miss

Take the hype, add some perspective

eat our shortsOMG! OMG! OMG!

Did. You. See! what the Stink did Saturday?? Rushed for 634 yards!!

Did. You. See! what the world’s greatest practice QB did Saturday?? Had eight TDs in three quarters!!

So went this week’s SoConversation, as league beat writers went all fanboy over stats that sure looked purttee.

Those were some ridiculous numbers with Georgia Southern rushing for 634 yards against Western Carolina (most ever against a Southern Conference opponent).

When does 634 yards not sounds impressive? Uhhhh ….

The Catamounts open the season by giving up 662 yards at Georgia Tech, then gave up 466 to Division II Mars Hill before the Eagles amassed 694.

Mars Hill!

And the big new gun?

Furman’s Chris Forcier passing for seven touchdowns against Presbyterian (another SoCon record).

Yeah, that Chris Forcier, who had all of one TD in two games against, er, Coastal Carolina and El Cid.

But watch out now! He had a career game … against Blue Hose!

/shaking in custom-made boots

We know we shouldn’t smirk too much. There have been occasions when our beloved Apps put up big numbers against an also-ran, but we’ve always tried to have some perspective.

That’s nice .. but ….

Speaking of which, here’s a few SoConversations on the big game Saturday.

ADAM: On paper it’s App State’s most difficult road game in the SoCon. Everybody always gets pumped for App, but I have to think Wofford will be extra fiery. Despite having some great teams in recent years, the Terriers have beaten App only once in their last seven tries.

JEFF: Though App State spoiled my record last week, I can’t shake the feeling that the Mountaineers are not the powerhouse of recent years. They’ve got that thing, though, where they are used to big games for high stakes, and making plays to win them. App has handled Wofford in recent years, but I kind of like the Terriers at home this time.

One day, 18 hours, 44 minutes, 17 seconds till .. PBS time!

Now that’s hype-tastic!

I'm getting this feeling that both sides of the ball are going to play with chips on their shoulders this week….could be just the inspiration our team needs to have an epic day on offense and defense….potential to be the first real COMPLETE game we've seen in years really…we've been running on an explosive offense and anemic defense for what seems like forever….had the opposite last week…..this week we bring it all. Go App. Respect Yosef.

Them sneaky sobs at PBS just forced me to breakdown and get HD. No chance I'm missing this game nor the GS game. Only reason I won't be in Boone for Black Saturday is because my daughter is due to be born on Oct.28th. I hope she gets here about 10 days early.

Lou Holtz just said we were in division 2. Anyone else see that?

    September 29, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Lou Holtz just referred to App State as being a Division II team. "Virginia Tech hasn't played anyone. They beat two CUSA teams and a division II team."

Like I said, no one cares about the FCS and most people don't even know what it is.

Win out and get out now.

You're getting bent out of shape based off the comments Lou Holtz made, I repeat LOU HOLTZ. Youtube his name and you will find he makes MANY mistakes. This is the same guy who thought Jimmy Clausen was the best thing to ever happen to college football.

If we moved up to conference usa, according to Holtz statement, we would belong in a conference that is irrelevant to college football. Pick your poison.

    September 29, 2011 at 6:36 pm

Two of the main college football announcers on ESPN (Holtz and May) seem to think that App State is Division II. I'd say that the FCS is irrelevent based on that alone.

Leaving on the midnight train…never coming back.

How old is Lou holtz? 120? He was probably in his 80's when division 1 had 1AA and1A. I dont think his football sub division vocabulary has updated in some time. I wouldn't get so worked up about it. He kinda lumped CUSA teams in with us, don't really think he takes them serious either. Y'all sound like a bunch of babies.

    September 29, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Oh crap!! I now have no self worth. Now I can't even hope for the world to love me when we get to CUSA cuz Lou dosen't care about them either. I think I will have to become a VT fan so people will love me.

When are u people going to wake up. It doesn't matter, D3,D2, D1AA, sunbelt, Mac, CUSA, unless you are a major BCS conference, no one really cares. I am all for where ever we end up but stop thinking that a move up is going to bring 70,000 people to the stadium and college gameday once a year. The emblem on the turf will be different and the opposing uniforms will change, but at the end of the day the majority of America still won't care. The only difference is there will be no championship to play for. I'm all for the move but it's not going to happen as most of you are visualizing, not for awhile anyway.

  13. JMcCray

    September 29, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Yeah, because Lou Holtz hates CUSA but loves whichever CUSA team his son is coaching. He just says things because he likes to raise emotions.

I have read where 4 different sportswriters have picked Wofford. I don't understand why the same sportswriters are voting us at #3 in the Country. The way I see it, until we go down to another FCS opponent we are still…APP STATE. My prediction is that our young defense is going to play very tough, cover their assignments and hurt Wofford's offense. We have athletes, Wofford has a few, but mostly average talent that is well coached. If you look at recent history, when we play well it is very one-sided. Our offense will be back….one bad offensive output in years is not going to slow us down. This is a statement game and we will make it loud and clear!

    September 30, 2011 at 3:49 am

It's all about respect and when we don't get it from any of the major sports broadcasters because we play JV football, yes it pisses me off. I am confused as to why none of them seem to know or care that the FCS exists.

I'm sick of it. We're better than that.

    September 30, 2011 at 3:51 am

Again, if I were the coach, I would play this clip in the locker room before every game. Is this how we want to go out…is this how we want to be remembered.

I'm ready to run through a brick wall this morning.

I don't care about Lou Holtz, I care about the perception that he and others give possible recruits. The perception high school athletes received is that App is DII and that is not good. Part of having school pride is casting the school in a positive light. While I didn't hear Lou last night, it bothers me that he talks App down on national television because it does hurt our school.

  26. JMcCray

    September 30, 2011 at 7:32 am

    Very valid point Keith.

And LP AppFan, not sure about your provider, but the game is on UNCEX. Funny, I gave up cable but I get this channel for free.

    September 30, 2011 at 8:22 am

You just can't have it both ways. If you don't want these guys talking us down we need to stop playing those games. We have won ONE big time game and the rest we have been fodder. What the hell do you want them to say? How about they say "well Harry I know they got blown out by 50 points but they really tried hard". If we are going to keep playing the money games we will need a little thicker skin.

Appalachian Teachers College has an enrollment of 5,682 and primarily serves the Western NC region. ATC is known in NC as a "party school" where alcohol abuse is prevalent. The graduation rate is abysmal and the more serious students transfer to nearby Western Carolina.

Since the opinions/perceptions of those outside the App family are irrelevant and accuracy doesn't matter, that paragraph shouldn't bother anyone. Right?

  29. Jason

    September 30, 2011 at 9:05 am

Mountaineerx is right and the rest of you are living in a fanstasy world. No one cares about any conference that doesn't have "BCS" in the title. ECU is begging to get OUT of C-USA because no one cares about them. They have the same argument we have.

Is C-USA a potential stepping stone for us? Maybe! But there's a LONG LINE of bigger schools with more money than we have waiting to hitch a ride on that elevator.

That said, I support the University and will continue to do so no matter what decision they make. But the argument that the SoCon sucks and/or the national media doesn't care about us is NOT a valid reason to move up.

Curious, how many people are going to be at the game? I'm hoping it will be enough to give the team a boost. Usually the home crowd is pretty quiet, and a rowdy app following can make a difference at that stadium.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but is there any difference besides the name in division 2 and FCS? Both get the same amount of attention by the media. Could they not just merge the two to creat one big division 2.

Yep. I don't know how I can take these clown writers serious… I hope all of this is being used as locker room bulletin board material.

I hope it is a repeat of Halloween night when we smoked them 70-24. Jerry needs to run up the score if we can get out to a sizeable lead.

    GO 'NEERS!
