‘A sad but true tradition’

toothlessAwwww – “As the highly-regarded Western Carolina Marching Band leaves the field after the halftime show, hundreds of fans also file out, almost in unison. Don’t blame the fans for not coming or leaving early — there’s nothing much to watch except the other team scoring at will. There were two moments of significant cheering yesterday — when the band completed play at halftime and the announcement that Appalachian State had lost.”

If we win the next two games, I think we will be eligible for the playoffs. Never give up!

If we win out, we should get a bid. But that would mostly be because we have demonstrated to the selection committee over the years that we can guarantee a certain # of "butts in seats" during playoff games.

Western couldn't beat our 3rd stringers. As poorly as we played yesterday, I I know we are coming out strong next week. I would hate to be western next week. We may hang 70 on them again.

As inconsistant as we are, we beat Western by 2 TD's if we don't practice/game plan all week. This team is bad and thier program is in the toilet. No slam on any particular players, but physically they look like a Div. 2 team. I actaully feel sorry for their program and wish it would get better. I think NCCU brings more to the table right now then "The Cats".

Western is so bad right now that we can hand the ball off to Cadet up the middle the whole game and still win by 3 TDs. HA..I just saved our offensive coaches a whole week of planning!

Seriously, they've won one game against DII Mars Hill, but they still gave up 31 points.

I also would take NCCU over WCU. They fired their D coordinator last week, they have more changes coming. Wagner should be gone at the end of the year. However, with the talent they currently have, they couldn't win in the Socon with Nick Saban or Chris Peterson coaching.

How did you get a copy of our game plan for next week? I heard Jerry Moore talking after the game. Next week cadet will direct take every snap and attempt 0 passes.

It was the turnovers in the red zone along with no scoring from the one foot line that did us in yesterday.

If we by chance lose to Western, all the coaches should be fired and ordered to have their offices cleared by midnight.

If we lose to ccc I will personally put a for sale sign in all the coaches yards and help them move out.

Seriously, I think this is trap game as well and could be another 2004. I am not taking anything for granted with these coaches. You guys forget ccc has played us close almost winning 2 years ago in Boone.

Anything can happen with this coaching staff.

2005 is not 2011. Completely different team. That is comparing apples to snails.

Today forgive me for being upset that our team lost. Reading your comments you would think we were undefeated and playing like we were in 2007. I am not going to give the coaches a pass just because we used to be good.

There is no way we lose to Western. Yosef83, just because you found one blog site, doesn't mean you've discovered an accurate sample of the ASU fan base. There are TONS of diehards on MMB and AGS and tons of blowhards on Appfan.com. To offense to the writers. All their stuff is great and read it every day, but there are a ton of commenters here that are absolutely out of touch. Yosef82, you seem like one of these people. You can't just demand that Moore be fired. He is still the architect of the modern App State football program and one of the greatest players coaches of all time. I don't doubt the abilities of the winningest coach in SoCon history to win games. I am however concerned in his ability to surround himself with competent assistants. Some things are going wrong on the coaching side, but it's not yet time to rashly clean house. That's rediculous.

Anyway, no matter how you feel about our teams coaching woes, at least Moore didn't molest anyone. Heyooohh!! (google it)

Just take care of business the next 2 weeks and the Apps are in the playoffs easily with 8 wins. The Furman lost will cost the team a seed in the tourney which means unless the seeds lose in early rounds the Apps can expect to travel after the first round (if they get that far). Still lots of season left and I guarentee no FCS team wants to see ASU in their side of the bracket.

The people on here going nuts are not really flipping out over this loss. They are flipping out over the fact that we have not picked a place to go and they are frustrated. Problem is that we don’t have a pick. We don’t have an invite yet. It will come and we will have more losses. They somehow have convinced themselves that the losses will not bother them as much after the move. We will see how that pans out. Till that time we will have the same coaches, players, and support staff. As I have said before they have finally made a sound business decision. Use today’s dollars to build facilities and then after the destination has been determined you spend the money on people. We are in a holding pattern that has been planned for a long time. We SHOULD not see a change in head coach till that time and we WILL not see a change in assistants till then. Coach Moore has done a great job over the years. Thinking that our accomplishments happened by accident is just stupid. Leave the guy alone. He has no desire to stay on after the move. There will be a whole new staff, roster, and support staff. Calling for his head just makes you a jackass. You are going to get what you want soon enough when things start to settle down in the FBS mess. Till that time know that Coach has done more for this university by accident than you could ever hope to do with all your might.

Well said bcoach. I agree with about 95% of what you said. Coach Moore deserves to be our coach until he decides to retire. However, I would like to see us hire and OC. We really should have done it a couple of years ago. I really believe not having an OC is the main issue with our less than dynamic offense. Cadet is not Kevin Richardson. In 2007 our average length of drive was around 3 minutes. We had the ball for 22 minutes in the first half. That is power I App football from the 90s, but not the last six years.

From listening to the game and looking at the stats, it seems our defense played pretty well. They have made progress this year.

I sure agree that we need an OC but I just don't see it happening till after the move. I just don't see any investment in people till then. As a fan I hate that but as a business man I understand it.

Well said bcoach. I agree with about 95% of what you said. Coach Moore deserves to be our coach until he decides to retire.

No one deserves to hold a job that they cannot perform well in just because they were good at one point in their career. I work for a global company. I feel that I have done one hell of a job for them up to this point in time. I have won awards for some of the money I have saved the company and some of the improvements I have been able to realize during my tenure here. But, if my performance slips, I know I am out the door just like everyone else. I do not have the luxury that you think Moore has earned. In the real world with global competition, no one does.

Moore has drawn a paycheck during the past 23 years while he was a coach at ASU. For a normal person, a pretty damn good one at that. If he could have done better believe me he would have been out the door in a wink of an eye. But as far as I know in 23 years no one came calling for his services. He was also able to secure a job for his son. I have four kids and I would love to land them a job working with me for good money. But, I live in the real world and that is not going to happen…EVER! I do not see how he is owed the luxury of taking the program back to the" stone age" because he did what he was hired to do.

The only people that are owed something in this mess are the kids that are playing the games every week. I want the best for them and right now….they ain't gettin it!

    No Moore

I think that is a key point bcoach, we may not be able to afford an OC at this point. We have spent so much, it may be strictly business.

I will say this however, we must not be too hard up for money, if we were, why are we closing the bookstore the day before gameday (and gameday) at 6:00. For the GSU game, the place was a madhouse and they pushed everyone out the door and locked em up. Whoever continues to do this must not give a crap about making as much $$ as possible.

You're an idiot Yosef82. JM has declined several raises during his tenure at App State. I bet you were in the same crowd that called for his head in 04 and then turned into huge fans during the national championship years. That's assuming you were a fan back then of course, which I assume you were not. Learn your history and stop posting such idiocy. No amount of pretentious bull $hit about whatever company you work for will convince me that you aren't the idiot that your posts paint you to be. Is your shirt baby blue?

Give it up. He has tunnel vision. He hates the coach and there is no talking to him. We can all sit here and bitch about play calling and a hundred different thing about the team. We, me included, do it all the time while still understanding 99% of coaches in all sports would love to have his record. I don't agree with all his decisions but look around and tell me who has done a better job. We don't have a head coach problem we have an assistant problem. I know 82 it is his job to get assistants but if you don't have any money for it you do the best you can. Could you have gotten Elliot to work FREE his first year and live in a closet? Not a figure of speach A CLOSET over at the gym. His bathroom was the locker room.

To all those bringing up 04. I admittedly was one of those who did call for JM's head and major change after the loss to western. I was at that game and it was the worst coached game I have ever seen by any team at any level.

That call for JM's head was not the right one but the change that needed to happen did. We got a new progressive AD, the control of the offense was taken out of JM's hand and put in an up and coming intelligent and progressive assistants hands. Scott Satterfield changed our offense developed Richie Williams and put us in position for long term offensive success.

I am frustrated today in a different way than I was in 04. The problem today is solely offensive play calling and long term planning in recruiting. We need a new OC and a higher caliber of coach on offense that can utilize Quick more often and recruit and develop better running backs.

This team has all the talent it needs to win an NC this year but without some better offensive play calling we will stall in the playoffs.

Well this is a whole different situation. First of all it is two different budgets. I do know what you mean though. The answer is simple. It is called accountability and the book store is not held accountable like it would be if it were owned by a small business owner. It is run by folks that are basically government employees. If they don’t make the profits that they could, it is no big deal. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame the folks that pushed you out that is how they are trained. They have no incentive to go the extra mile. Go down on King Street and see if one of those store owners will push customers out the door. Universities are about tuition and donations. Universities don’t use their own assets very well. As an example if it were in my control I would place the bookstore under the control of the business school. I would then hold them accountable for forecasts and sales goals. Use your assets. The same could be done with the marketing of the sports teams. How about the goasu web page? If our graduates went out into the real world and produced the kind of products we sometimes produce internally they would be on unemployment assistance.
Well now I have gone off on a rant but to answer your question, you got tossed because of the lack of accountability.

Wouldn't hurt to recruit and develop offensive linemen, in addition to two or three real RBs. And along with some legit 190 – 200 lb backs like Richardson, why can we not have at least one 220 lb bruiser of a back to get a few critical yards now and then, block/pass protect other times?

Very good quesion. I have been asking that for a while now. We sure have no shortage of QBs. They play DB,RB,WR,and QB. It is real hard though to convert them to linemen(: ( and RB )
