Don't Miss

‘Whee got us a bet going on

Game .. blousesCollege guy meets college peer from rival school. Rival brags on sports teams. Guy snaps.

Guy makes bet. Guy says his school is better. Guy puts pride on line.

Guy then brags on his can’t miss proposition.

The punchline? His school is located in Cullowhee.

Behold the …/suppresses giggle .. “Power” of the Purple Challenge.

The idea for the challenge was born over the summer, when Eaves attended a meeting of University of North Carolina system student government presidents in Chapel Hill. Eaves said the ASU student president was talking about that school’s success against WCU in football and implied that ASU athletes are more “athletically gifted” than Catamounts. “I gladly explained that she was mistaken, and that night I decided I would challenge Appalachian’s student body president to a high-stakes bet,” Eaves said.

A record will be kept of which university sports team wins in head-to-head matchups, with all sports weighed equally. Next spring, after the baseball teams have finished their seasons, the final tally will be revealed. “The losing president will travel to the winning president’s school, where that person will be fitted in the winning school’s spirit gear and will be photographed with the winning school’s mascot,” Eaves said. “The pictures can be used as promotional material, and the losing president must make that picture his or her Facebook profile picture for a week. After returning to his or her home campus, the losing president must wear the winning school’s spirit gear for a week.”

First wanting a football game in Charlotte. Now this. If hello kitty had any more of an inferiority complex, she’d be demanding a soap box derby between math departments. That, or a Greek drinking contest. /gettin’ classy

But when ya can’t win in the big one, ya gotta fall back on the lil ones. Okay, we’ll bite.

In unofficial tallying to date, App State has won in volleyball, lost in women’s soccer. The vballers play again tomorrow.

The men’s cross country team finished two spots ahead in the league championship, but we have no idea if that counts. So the challenge is either tied, or App up one.

Regardless, pretty clever thinking on this purple president’s part. Finally an excuse not to wear that dreadful color .. for a week!

Feel free to up the ante and make it two! We’ll understand.

“Power” … /giggle

Wow, what an ambassador for WCU. This kid has a long future in politics. Perhaps he and the kid from Elon need to be introduced.

Commissioners Cup JMckray and yes you are correct

Western in insignificant. Who cares what they think or pretend to be. I've never met anyone that actually went there.

We dropped to #10. Wofford is #9 and GaSouthern is 4. Furman is 17. Based on rankings if we win out we should be in before Furman.

I've met one person who went there. He's my friend and by "went there" I mean Cullowee. He wanted to see the "brew-thru" they had because he was thinking about opening one in Boone. Other than that, I cannot see why anyone would want to go there.

Oh, and did we win the Commissioners Cup last year and a few other times too? I can't wait to see the 'Whee's president in black and gold.

And just to throw my two cents out there…is anyone else a little scared of us not making the playoffs? Because we really didn't do much this year except beat GSU who was just as over-rated as us. I know The Rock pulls in a lot of people for the playoffs compared to other schools but, looking at our resume, we really don't have much to stand on. I mean, we lost 2 out of the 3 big games (granted both losses were away) but shouldn't playoff-worthy teams be able to handle the pressure?

Don't everyone jump on my case at once. I'm just playing devil's advocate. Just something to think about.

Most people go to the schools they do because they get accepted. I actually know of professors at App that went to WCU as undergrads.

Well, I went there, once, it was November 1995 to see us finish out our Perfect Season 11 and 0. Wake and Marshall were victims that year in addition to Western

Don't see how we managed not to fall out of the top ten after Saturday's debacle. Yeah we should have beaten Furman and had lots of opportunities to do so, but failed to capitalize. Had no discernible game plan for the offense just like the Wofford regurgitation and Chatty!! This offense by committee just isn't working. Satterfield and Elliott worked. Whatever we have now isn't? Anybody know who is actually calling the plays?

I believe any team with 8 D-1 wins is playoff eligible, especially in the 2011 SoCon (the highest rated FCS conference). With our only two FCS loses coming to playoff bound teams, I don't share your concern. Even if we drop the ball at Elon and lose, we should still be there with our history and ability to make the NCAA money in the playoffs.

No problem and I agree with you, JMcCray. There are some that argue however, that we have an unfair advantage in the CC because we compete in more sports. Luckily, at least last year, we won by a margin big enough to account for the advantage. Oh, and I believe Whee was at the bottom of the final standings. This guy is as bad at choosing bets as he is at choosing schools.

  17. Darth Gonzo

    November 7, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Yep, ASU had 94 all-purpose, men's sports points to win last years CC compared to a 56 point, 9th place Western in 2010.

Appalachian has won 31 of the past 34 SoCon Commissioners Cup Championships. Western-0. Wow.

    Play calling by committee …

What other school does this? I guess JM thinks that if he lets his son call the plays there would be too much accountability and he would lose his job.

    Accountability is great thing.

    Who cares about ccc?

  21. Jamey

    November 8, 2011 at 4:39 am

I think we should have learned last week not to overlook anyone on our schedule. Beat Western early and often this week and then you can comment about their weak program. Until then, they are just another team that can gameplan for the Vanilla-Spread-No Option offense.

Didn't we only win by 5 back in 2009? I think it was 19 to 14. That was in Boone btw.

    November 8, 2011 at 5:40 am

ASU7 – Yeah in 2009 Cadet started at QB and our offense consisted of Cadet left, Cadet right, and Cadet up the middle. The Apps let the Whee come from behind and actually make a game of it. Hope there is no replay this year.

  26. Darth Gonzo

    November 8, 2011 at 5:50 am

I don't think some of you fully understand how bad this years Western team really is, even by their horribly low standards. The Can'tamounts have only won one game to a D-2 school that still managed to score more than 30 points on them. Hellen Keller could call our plays and we would win by 2 TD's.

  27. Mikeyosef

    November 8, 2011 at 6:46 am

Unfortunately for Western, we will have to trounce them and Elon next week to ensure we are in the playoffs with the best possible seeding. At this point anything short of complete domination could drop us further in the polls and hurt our chances for one home game in the playoffs.

  28. asu7

    November 8, 2011 at 7:01 am

Speedking … is that really different than what we are doing now?

Except for the fact that Cadet goes up the middle only and on the first play of every set of downs.

I would like to know how many times we start out 2nd and 8 or 2nd and 9. I would also like to see a stat of how many times have we scored on a drive when Cadet has ran it up the middle on the first play.

  29. appdreamin

    November 8, 2011 at 11:30 am

Having Helen Keller calling our plays might result in a more imaginative game plan than those followed by C. Moore and Glenn.

Jamey is right–we can count on nothing being a given with our 2011 team of players and coaches. As ridiculous as it seems on paper and as unlikely as it is to actually happen, a loss to Western (and/or Elon) wouldn't surprise me. What would surprise me would be an offensive approach that kept the opposing defense on its heels.

    I with dreamin…

CM and BG just aren't getting it done. WE NEED AN OC!!!!!!!!!

If I see Cadet up the middle on the first play I may throw up.
