Next: The one ‘Whee almost always win

Intimidating hair bowSenior Day Saturday as App State plays its final regular-season home game. The foe is Western Carolina, in the annual Battle for the ‘Ol Mountain Jug. Kickoff 3:30. Here are four downs.

1st Down – Same as it ever was
The ‘Whee has lost 14 D1 games in a row. The offense averages 23 points a game. The defense gives up 45.7. Third downs have been hard to convert (35 percent), and harder to defend (52.3 percent). Since 2006 the program has just one season with more than two wins; 2008 (In your face, Shorter College!)

2nd Down – Check Yosef before ya wreck Yosef
The last time hello kitties came to Boone, they brought a 2-8 record against App State’s eight-game win streak. The good guys won, but only by .. /gulp .. five in a 19-14 game in which Travaris Cadet started at QB for an injured AE. The game was 10-7 App entering the fourth quarter. A safety and Devon Moore TD within first 2:03 of the final stanza secured the win.

3rd down – ‘Whee > App State
In probably the most shocking stat of the SoCon season, the Catamounts have proven more successful than App State in the redzone. In fact, App has the league’s worst redzone offense, scoring on just 26 of 36 trips near paint. Western hasn’t been there as often, league-low 26 times, but has converted 19 of those trips to points.

4rd – ‘Whee weep
A few weeks ago Western fired its defensive coordinator. Its AD was also let go. The writing is supposedly on the urinal for current coach Dennis Wagner. And to top it all off, sports budgets are getting slashed. Tough times, or at least tougher than normal.

    +1 App Band

But on the other hand, if we don't win this game by 35+ points, something is wrong with our offense.

    Oh wait…

    November 8, 2011 at 8:38 am

Well, I agree. Everyone should be grateful. Afterall, App State could be Penn State.

Should be a good opportunity for Jamal to have a big game or two before playoffs.

We already have a great reason to hire a new coaching staff.

If we do not win by 30 someone should be fired. Well several folks should be fired.

I wish App would lose 10 games in a row so all you spoiled brats would stop going to the games and stop ruining it (asking for the coaching staff to be fired) for the real fans who understand you win some, you lose some.

    You guys disgust me.

I have officially given up on this website. From now on, I'll read articles from and Behind the Mic with DJ is much better than reading about your "Chicken Little BS".

Don't worry. We will be in the SEC within 5 years and wont have to loose to lesser teams.

You wish App would loose 10 games in a row to shut roughly 10 people up?

You are a "true" fan, I am humbled to read your posts, please don't leave . . .

You are not a true fan, you are a blind homer. I mean everyone knows the way you build a championship program is to be happy with underachieving. You lower the bar to the point there is no way you can fail to make yourself feel good. Instead of getting a trophy and the title of Champion to carry with you the remainder of your life you get a big warm Snuggly and some milk and cookies.

Go on over to the MMB with that attitude. You will be a “GOD” over there.

Can anyone recall when was the last time (before last Saturday) we lost a game against a team no one considered a real playoff contender? I don't remember. Anyone?

  17. Joe

    November 9, 2011 at 5:31 am

carbine, you do realize that Furman is a real playoff contender, right? Even if they didn't beat us, they would be a playoff contender with the 20 team field… SoCon is by far the best FCS conference this year and will likely get 4 teams in (unless Furman or us screw that up by losing)

Furman's sorta reminding me of Georgia Southern last year.

It has been a long time. Maybe E. Kentucky in the early 2000s, but that is off the top of my head and I'm not sure.

Joe, If Furman would have lost to us they would have been eliminated. You have to have 7 DI wins to be playoff eligible. By beating us they are 6-3 (same as us). The issue for them is they havn't played there FBS game yet @ Florida on Nov. 19th. That will almost certainly be there 4th loss. If they lose to Elon Saturday they will finish 6-5 and out of the playoffs. If they win, they will finish 7-4 and get a bid. However, forget consideration for the playoffs, if they had not beaten us, they would not have met the criteria to be eligible.

GaSo didn't look like a playoff team last year until they beat us, then they rode that momentum all the way to the semi-finals. Furman (or App) could do the same this year.

  23. App Band

    November 9, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Okay…a little clarification here, if you please. WHO do we pull FOR and WHO do we pull AGAINST from here on out in the SoCon? I know that all we can hope for at this point is one quarter of the championship, but I'd rather have that than nothing.

  24. appdreamin

    November 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Deep playoff run? Furman maybe, though I doubt it. But App? No way unless we make remarkable progress in the next two weeks. I wouldn't be surprised by a first-round playoff loss, even if the game is in KBS.

As with the Patriots, we've been limited by injury and lack of depth and experience (O-line, especially; also at RB, given our insistence on trying to plow through the middle). In addition, we've added predictable, plain vanilla play-calling to the mix. In general, we've been figured out and caught up to by the upper half of the league. Further complicating matters, GaSo and Furman have improved over recent seasons.

  25. appdreamin

    November 9, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I've been torn by your WHO question, App Band. Personally, I'd rather see GaSo win the league than Wofford–as much as I dislike GaSo, it's difficult not to have respect for their tradition and history.

But if GaSo wins, then it seems to me that the best we can do is fourth, assuming Wofford loses to GaSo and neither we nor Wofford nor Furman lose any other games. GaSo would be first with one loss, and the other two two-loss teams both beat us. So, if we're hoping for a four-way split, I guess we have to pull for Wofford–then all four teams would have two SoCon losses.

  26. appdreamin

    November 9, 2011 at 12:16 pm

I left out part of the thought above–in addition to Wofford beating GaSo, we then have to hope Chattanooga beats Wofford in the final game for both teams. We can't hope for GaSo to beat Wofford and then lose their final game; since their final is against Alabama, that certain loss does us no good in SoCon standings.

    November 9, 2011 at 12:22 pm

LOL! Thanks, AppDreamin! Now my head is spinning! Let's just say "GO APPS!" and leave it at that since we have no control over any of this anyway! 😉

  28. appdreamin

    November 9, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Sad but true–we completely lost control last weekend.

To summarize my ramblings above, we should pull for Wofford this weekend, Chattanooga the next, and of course ourselves both times. Then we'd have 25% of a conference title.

    November 9, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I would not be in favor of raising a flag bigger than one of those little ones that get passed around on the 4th of July parades if we share a title with 3 other teams…two of which we lost to.

  30. Keith

    November 9, 2011 at 2:02 pm

If Wofford beats Elon, Nooga beats Wofford, We win out and Elon Beats Furman..wouldn't we still get a three way split. Though I doubt that will happen.

So no one can remember the last time before Saturday's loss that we were upset by a (then) non-contender? That's got to tell you something about our program. Even the best teams go out and lay an egg from time to time, but it happens so rarely to us that no one can remember from one to the next. May we go another ten years before dropping a 'gimme.'
