‘Whee need to find a new coach again

Good luckOut – “Dennis Wagner, the head football coach at Western Carolina University since 2008, has announced his resignation from the program effective immediately. Wagner met with Fred Cantler, interim director of athletics, on Sunday morning to inform him of his decision. Wagner’s career record at WCU was 8-43, 3-27 in the SoCon.”

I really feel bad for the guy. He didn't really make dumb decisions ( ala Lamb, Huesman…) just a lot of bad luck. There were a lot of injuries to key players that really effected the seasons he was coaching. Best of luck to him in the future.

    Satterfield, Elliot…

After the game last night, a Cat fan on the shuttle bus suggested we just keep the Jug. They are frustrated after years of embarrassing football Their coach has struggled with subpar facilities, poor leadership, and not enough money to compete. Given our impending move to FBS, I think the Jug Game is no longer relevent. Hopefully with a new chancellor, AD, and, now, new coach WCU can re invent their football team.

Little know fact – he was highest paid coach in socon…180k/year.

I for one hope we keep playing WCU, because it is our longest running rivalry. And is one of the coolest Rivalry Game Trophies. If it were two, who wouldn't want to play for jugs? Double entendre and all that Yosef stuff; "Don't play with Yosef," "Don't beat Yosef," "You can't lick Yosef," etc..

Rivalries come and go… it may be one of the oldest rivalries for App, but there's really no reason other than that to continue it after moving to FBS. The competitive gap between the two schools will only grow and a yearly matchup would get old quick.

Playing each other maybe once a decade? No problem. But once a year (or every two)? I don't see the point.

were talking about a program that's last "winning" record was 5-4 in '05 (wasn't that they year they fired the High School coach?) and only 26 seasons above .500… Coach Moore has almost accomplished that, himself, in Boone!

For me, the rivalry died when my Dad's brother died 11 year's ago… no one to really poke fun at any more, as the rest of the Kitty family alum (and I'm the only one to ever not go there) just doesn't care about how the team plays!

They won't get better until they get an administration and coach that can sell their program. They're replacing a lot of pieces. They could get it right, but I doubt it.

I think they should call this guy.

Many keep referring to our moving up. We're willing and, perhaps, ready. But an invitation in the short term seems a long shot. I think we'll be FCS for two to five more seasons, minimum.

I think the bell ringing graphic is stupid. Mainly because it does not match the actual ringing. I would like for App to have a real bell ring like the AC/DC's Hells Bell. I priced one last year and we can have it cast, shipped and installed for around 32 thousand dollars. Wouldn't it be great to have a real bell to ring on third downs. The Rock would be the only stadium in the country to have one. The Ironic thing is the AC/DC Hell's Bell plays the musical note A.

Brad Hoover should be the new coach. He is a God around there. That would get the most support quickly for the program. I’m sure he has no interest in it however.

New coach won’t happen until a new AD is hired… For Wagner it was resign or get fired… glad he chose to do the right thing… Got to have been a tough week for Wagner… loosing a father-in-law and then a job…

I'm talking about a big bell, several tons even, a permant structure type of bell a bell that sounds like the bell that is played over the PA on 3rd down. That size of Bell.

along the same lines…whatever happened to the cannon that we use to shoot whenever we scored back in the day. Why did we get rid of that? Anyone know?

What is about average for a SoCon Head Coach ?

    OC, DC , Assistants ?

    I thought J Moore was over 200K ?

  24. biggie

    November 14, 2011 at 11:45 am

Pete, probably 100-150k is the average for SoCon coahes.

Remembered this article out of Raleigh a year or so ago.

"Appalachian State Head Football Coach Gerald Moore

    Contract: July 1, 2007 – June 30, 2009

    Annual Salary: $160,000"

Jerry has turned down raises a few times and told them to put that money into the program.

  25. biggie

    November 14, 2011 at 11:47 am

    From that^:

"Western Carolina Head Football Coach Dennis Wagner

    Contract: Jan. 3, 2008 – Jan. 2, 2013

    Annual Salary:

    2008-09: $100,000

    2009-12: $180,000

    2012-13: $190,000"

'ASU in the QC'. I believe you're talking about the black powder rifle that Yosef would shoot off as we scored a touchdown or a field goal. I agree, and have noticed that that tradition is slowly slipping away. I see ROTC members manning that rifle, but they're pretty slow on the trigger and sometimes don't fire it at all. Not sure why that's going away…maybe a political correctness thing??? Not sure

    November 14, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Coach Moore is listed at 170,000 on the University salary database…

    November 15, 2011 at 3:11 am

The $170,000 is what the university pays him with state funds. It does not include the extras, like clothing or shoe contracts, Yosef Club funds, etc. He makes right at $300,000/year.

Biggie, he turned down raises and said to put it towards the program?? The man can say that I guess, but he doesn't need a raise.

    November 15, 2011 at 3:44 am

Yosef's gun started going away after he "shot" the VMI mascot… leaving powder burn's.

Political Correctness can and usually does suck!

    November 15, 2011 at 4:16 am

I warned him three times to back off. We were up by a score of something like 30-0 and it was just before halftime. He had no business challenging me based on his team's performance (especially with those silly boxing gloves he had on). The only reason I was over on that side of the field in the first place was to tell their cheerleaders where to go for refreshments at halftime.

Anyway, call it a momentary lapse of reason or whatever, I shot him. He did suffer powder burns AND smoke came out of the ears of that sorry looking kangaroo head. Politically correct? I don't know, but it was the best thing I ever did during my tenure as mascot.

BTW, he wanted to go out and reinact the whole thing during the second half but I told him he was crazy and refused.

  31. AppWyo

    November 15, 2011 at 6:02 am

I think they got rid of the cannon because it took too long for the smoke to clear the field. I think they only used that for one game.

  32. App Band

    November 15, 2011 at 6:35 am

There actually was an incident with that cannon involving one or more BoD members. That thing was fired while the band was waiting to go on the field and cause some ear injuries.

If yosef is not going to do it then it should just be stopped. The ROTC guys doing it just look silly. Guys in fatigues firing black powder?
