Tipoff – App State at ETSU

ItApp State is 1-0 after whoppin’ Lees-McRae. ETSU is 0-1 after getting whooped by Virginia Tech. They collide at 7 in Johnson City. It’s way too early to draw any conclusions, but there is one major beef tonight. The two teams have met each of the past four seasons … and the Bucs went 4-0. Like Michael Jackson, it’s time to make that change. Give ’em hell!

5-0. Bucs win, 81-68.

ELSEWHERE. South Carolina traveled to Elon … and lost!

But in the last 4 seasons we've never lost to their football team.

Dunking the ball during warmups. Don't know who did it.

answered my own question. looks like we were dunking during pregame, which apparently is a technical foul.

this is an UGLY game on both sides…

Apps down 13-4 after 7 minutes. 9 turnovers in the first 8 minutes. The more things change they more they stay the same.

21-4 now with 12 turnovers. Getting drubbed by the first real team they play won't do much for fan enthusiasm.

Seems like it would be better not to spot a team 20 points to begin a BB game

Meh. Bad night. Growing pains. Not a conference game, so not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. They'll get better.

I like Woods' ability as a distributor, but he's not starting PG material yet. Team needs Vilarino and Omar at 100%.

ASU teams historically struggle with zone defenses. At least Capel has something to work with before ECU.

How ridiculous is it that the officials would issue a technical foul for dunking in warmups? More importantly, how ridiculous is it that there is a rule that outlaws dunking in warmups?

twenty…seven…turnovers. You can hear the disbelief in DJ and Brownie's voices…

Not a good showing by the Mountaineer's tonight.

Silver lining: A game we should lose by 40 with the TOs we will only lose by about 15. Once they cut down the turnovers, they'll win many, many games.

    7 point game!

Hausley, Okam and Vilarino got 0 minutes in the game? Really? I guess GJ is still having problems with the ankle. Could have used another point guard tonight. Williamson played well when not in foul trouble. Makes you think the other two bigs could have fared well. Oh well.

looks like Healy (a former walk-on) is getting more minutes than Hausley in the early season. In the exhibition contest, it appeared that Milum was going to be a big time scorer and start at shooting guard, but he didn't start the first 2 games. If Omar plays to capability, Butts gets his double-doubles, and they find a couple other scorers (Trice, Milum, Williamson, whoever) than there is no reason for this team not to win the North division and/or the tourney. Is Capel Capelable?

Good point, Rick. A disappointing loss to say the least, but I'm not ready to write this team off unless it becomes a regular occurence. I don't think it will.

cbarrier, i agree. GJ/Woods, Omar, Trice, Andre and Butts is probably the most talented starting 5 in the league. Its all gonna come down to execution. They don't. have a Sims to lean on, they gotta play as a team and execute. We'll see what Caple can do this year. I really think its gonna come down to us finding a floor leader. I think the coaches were thinking GJ would be the guy.

Appy97, Milum started the exhibition because Carter was injured. He won't be starting again unless Carter is hurt, but we need his shooting this year. Right now his shot selection is "questionable".

Don't really understand why Woods is on the floor. From what I saw of him last season was him aimlessly dribbling the ball. He'll jog up the floor, pass, and then disappear. Woods isn't really a scorer or a shooter, and from what I've seen isn't much of a PG.

Maybe someone else who has seen him this season can clear up my misunderstanding of his role.

Woods is starting because GJ is injured. When GJ is healthy, I have no doubt he'll be starting.

Woods is a great defender, especially in our league, being 6'3". He is a good passer and has worked on his shot. Saw him hit a couple of treys in a scrimmage, but thats not his role on the team. I think GJ is the better pure PG. He's not much of a shooter, but more of a "scorer". Great speed and can cut on a dime.

I agree with Rick. Woods is pretty composed. He turned the ball over a lot yesterday, but generally, is pretty reliable. That's why they used him at PG as a freshman last year to open up Sims' game at the off guard. You can tell he's a coaches son. But, I did assume that since GJ was recruited by bigger programs, and played at Gonzaga, that he would be "the man" when he got his chance.

GJ's role will be resolved soon. Currently injured, but has the biggest upside of anyone in the program… If he does not fulfill on that upside and potential, then this team is just not good enough offensively to achieve what was expected of them. He can help other get shots where they are most comfortable and he can create his own. Not a great shooter (but who is these days) but can score of the dribble and get by anyone. Look this might not work out as expected, but if it does, we might have won really big with getting this kid…TBD
