Belated rematch. “This will be the Black Bears’ first appearance in the NCAA’s since 2008. They have faced ASU once before, beating the Mountaineers 14-13 in an NCAA first-round game in 2002, in Boone.”

And other possible. “A juicy matchup could come as early as the Dec. 9-10 quarterfinals, when the Eagles could meet Appalachian State in Paulson Stadium if both teams win their playoff games.”

More on the Black Bears. “The ESPNU announcers on the selection show referred to UMaine as “limping into the playoff,” after losing two of its last three and questioned whether “the University of Maine has the athletes to keep them (ASU defenders) off.””

Meet a Black Bear. Raibonne Charles will start 41st career game at App State.

Wofford in by a whisker. “The Terriers are coming off a 28-27 victory at Chattanooga Saturday. Wofford rushed for 358 yards and rallied from a 21-7 halftime deficit to pick up the win.”

So close yet so far. “League champion Georgia Southern automatically qualified and Appalachian State and Wofford received at-large bids. Chattanooga lost to those three teams by a combined four points.”

Furman shafted for this? First round matchup involves 7-4 James Madison at unranked Eastern Kentucky.

ESPN3 only. “Jim O’Day, UM’s athletic director, confirmed Sunday that while ESPN has the broadcast rights to the Football Championship Subdivision, the network is showing the first- and second-round games only on ESPN3 – its Internet-based channel.”

Stop your whining. “Would ODU really like to be traveling to Appalachian State for its first-ever playoff game? I think not.”

Talking FCS playoffs. In the dark apparently.

ZERO tv for the first two rounds. Don't look now but our TV coverage is slipping yet again.

Last year both rounds had one game on ESPN2 or ESPNU.

This Trend is going to continue in the fcs due to extremely low tv ratings the last few years and the lack of national interest towards the fcs. I mean you guys heard them trashing the fcs on gameday a couple Saturday's ago by giving someone a hundred dollars if they could name the top two teams in fcs and they couldn't

My DirecTV had FCS playoff listed on ESPNU at Noon for Dec 3rd, teams TBD. But could change.

I would rather give up a game on ESPNU to avoid a 12:00 kickoff. We haven't had a home playoff game that wasn't a 12:00 start since Richmond in 07 on Friday night unless I am forgetting one.

Playing later can only help attendance. Having 20K would be nice, but folks have other plans this time of year (even with a two week notice) so it'll probably be about 14K. However, I love that the people who do show up are all about the game. Our team plays better at home and a good crowd would help.

tickets are free for students this year so that should help with attendance a little bit.

My ESPN ScoreCenter App on my phone has the game against Maine set at 12:00pm. Has a start time been confirmed or is that just the default time for ESPN?

I wish we could get a later start time, for sure. It helps the people who have to drive up from off the mountain. I am fortunate enough to live in Boone so it's not an issue for me…..great excuse to have a beer before noon, in fact.

ESPN 3 doesn't count as TV. You have to pay to see it thus it does not help exposure. The only people paying for it are the ones that already know about App State and the FCS playoffs.

Actually you do kind of pay for ESPN3 because it's only available if you use certain providers for internet. It's def. not like having a game on the mother ship or even the deuce.

For some reason I don't have the confidence of this playoff team as I've had in the past few years. The past teams have spoiled us, and we are going in looking to beat teams instead of being the team to beat.

I CAN'T WAIT for this game. I've been to every game this season (home and away) and this will be the first one where I'll be able to tailgate without having to look out for the Gestapo (A.L.E.) every ten seconds. Hope the team shows up and gives me an awesome 21st birthday experience.

If you're on the site, there is a good chance you already "paid" for ESPN3. AppFan is on the internet and ESPN3 is on the internet. if you're internet provider doesn't have ESPN3, I bet you'll be able to find the game somewhere on the internet.

Round One Maine at Appalachian St

    The Epic Wilderness Battle

Deep in the Highest, Darkest, Coldest, most Northern regions of the Appalachian Mountains; Lives a Huge, Monstrous, Freak of Nature, Big 1,200 lbs Maine Black Bear. He is Quick. He is Cunning. He is crafty. He is Devises. He runs like the Wind. He growls loudly. He has very large claws. His grip will not let go and will cause you to bleed.

The Big Black Bear looks around in the cold crispy air of Maine, he see's the beginning of the Appalachian Trail and wonders what adventures might laid on it. He starts down the trail, running like the wind. After about two weeks he realize something familiar. He is hearing the loud wore of his prey. He stops looks around realize he is in North Carolina just west of Boone. He heads east towards Grandfather Mountain. He says he will take care of Grandfather later. He comes apron the City of Boone home of The Appalachian State Mountaineers. He knows his prey is nearby. He see Kid Brewer Stadium and heads up Stadium Dr. He sees the gates open. He walk right in all the way to the center of the field on the 50 yard line.

He makes one large loud growl. As is growl ends he realize he is in a stadium surrounded by over 20,000 fans. He looks around knowing he prey is around. He turns and sees he prey, its Yosef the Mountaineer. He looks at Yosef straight in his eyes and starts to move. He moves faster and faster like the wind. Just before he gets to the 10 yard line jumps in the air to a height of 10 ft headed straight for Yosef. Yosef realize there is only one thing he can do. Yosef pulls out his 4 weapons. His gun, His rifles, His Musket, & His Cannon. He shots the Big Maine Black Bear down. The Black Bear lands on the 1 yard one just before the endzone. Yosef walks up and kicks the bear. The bear does not move. Yosef signals to the Mountaineer team that is their turn. The Mountaineers run on to the field. The Mountaineers signal to the fans to come on to the field. They all go over to the Maine Black Bear and tear him apart limb by limb with their own two bare hands.

    Final Score

    Appalachian St Mountaineers 31

    Maine Black Bears 14.

    Nomadb,

If, and it's a monumental if, we win first round, don't waist your birthday gift on a trip to Statesboro. My guess, you will forever remember it as one of the worst birthdays you ever had. My bet is that it's over by halftime.

Plus, I hear the crowd is awful.

I wish our fans would understand that exposure helps with recruiting athletes, but also helps the university as a whole.

As for supporting the team – you have no idea about my personal support of the program.

Not sure what to say to that, chAmPPs, except I am not easily intimidated by other teams fans and wouldn't give them the satisfaction of showing my anger even if they did make me ill.

Also, have a little faith and support your team. Over at halftime? I hope you mean we run away with it in the first half…..

It's great to be a Mountaineer (at least in spirit!) Enjoy the playoffs and the excitement that is associated with the next few weeks. I have sat out in the Boone cold December games many times to catch a playoff game.

Random thought that seems somewhat appropriate at this time of year: Given a choice of extending the season by five possible games (FCS) or going to a minor bowl game(FBS) far, far away I know what choice I would make.

    Beat Maine and carry on.
