Battle of the Bball Beards tonight

The man“Battle of the Beards: Hardwood Edition” is tonight in the QC.

It’s a homecoming for one Mountaineer.

That’s what senior Omar Carter, the former Charlotte Christian star, loves about playing for Capel. Carter and the Mountaineers (2-1) are in Charlotte today for a 7 p.m. game against East Carolina (2-1) at Time Warner Cable Arena.

“There’s really not any difference” between who Capel was as an assistant and how he is now, Carter said. “He always has an open-door policy; you can text him any time of the day or night. He might be doing something different job-wise, but his personality never changed.

“He’s a young guy, and that means he relates to us better. I know that’s really helped me out, personally.”

“A lot of friends and family have never seen me play” in college, Carter said. “It’s my senior year – what better way to go out than to play a good team like East Carolina in your hometown?”

The Pirates are 2-1 with wins over, um, non-D1s. They lost by two to Campbell.

App State is 2-1, with wins over Lees-McRae and Tennessee Tech. The loss was at ETSU.

So does ECU, tehy should be up by at least 20. That may have been the worst shooting half of b-ball I have ever seen

    November 22, 2011 at 4:04 pm

30-17. Are you kidding me? 17 points. Wow, this should be called the battle of the no-shooting mf-ers.

I don't actaully mind the missed shots, but 12 turnovers and the missed free throws are terrible

Maybe we should have played South Carolina. Tennessee Tech beat them and so did Elon. We might have had a chance for a win

I can't watch this, I think we have more turnovers than points

    November 22, 2011 at 4:26 pm

Was it Tennessee Tech that beat SoCar, or Tennessee State?

AIG, I think we may beat Maine by three or four. Then we'll lose to GaSo by 10 or more.

  19. AIG

    November 22, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Yeah, I think it was Tennessee State. Maine is gonna be tough but we play good at the Rock

I was there and we were terrible. Jason does not command any presence and After seeing tonight I think he needs more time as an assistant. Very frustrated with 50% ft and all the to's.

My comment is awaiting moderation. Maybe we were not making a run.

Did Ike Butts play basketball before tonight ever? It sure did not seem like it. That may have been the most embarassed I have ever been to identify myself as a Mountaineer. Was that really the best our team has to offer? If not for Trice…we score 9 points and look like a JV Junior High School team. The only thing worse than the officials was the fact that our coach and players let them dominate the game. It was pitiful….AT BEST.

I cannot find one positive thing about this game besides Trice. I am not exaggerating when I say that Butts was the most unathletic person I have ever witnessed on a basketball court. I honestly believe he was called for travelling 6 times in the 1st half.

AIG…I made sure not to use any foul language so my comment would get posted ASAP for those who could not attend this murder.

    I second everything Jamey said.

Scouting report for beating ASU is simple: play a zone defense, and you win.

Well, that was interesting. No offense, lots of turnovers, a little defense, and Trice. That's my summary. Oh and the old guy behind me kept on saying, "Man we suck" and "put armanti in" over and over again and a dad actually snapped at me for yelling "come on ref" at a bad call. We have an interesting fan base.

This team has no leadership, no ability to shoot from outside and make consistent baskets, non are coachable. Very disappointing.

After a performance like that we need to fire Jerry Moore.

    Agenda for today's practice:

    > Teach dribbling

    > Teach shooting

    > Teach defense

The kid from Gonzaga, Vararino has some jets and along with Trice looks very good. Poor Ike is just too slow and any team will attack him. If we play zone he's okay but NOt man to man. Oh and by the way Healy hustles more than anyone out there. if you want leadership start him.

I didn't see any coaching adjustments made to the half court zone trap they used.

Ike Butts, in large part because of injuries, just has never developed into the player folks thought he could become. I'm really disappointed in Andre Williamson's play. He's a senior who has been a significant contributor his four years. I was hoping he would step it up this year. Hopefully, he will.

It seems that a trademark of ASU basketball these days is turnovers. In our two losses we averaged 26 of them!

It's probably a good thing we aren't in CUSA. ECU is a second division team in that league and they destroyed us. Not sure the athletic program in general is ready for a step up.

  34. cbarrier90

    November 23, 2011 at 7:58 am

I love how everybody is jumping on this loss as a reason not to move into C-USA (despite the fact that we also have recent wins over Tulsa and Marshall.)

C-USA is a better basketball conference which would equal better recruits. Better conference = better opportunity to play in March = better recruits. SoCon basketball, on the other hand, is about as low on the D-1 totem pole as it gets.

This team has the talent to turn it around come time for conference play and make us all forget about what happened in Charlotte last night. Still too early to gauge where this team will finish, but obviously there are causes for concern.

    November 23, 2011 at 9:19 am

Regardless of what talent we have on the roster, the athletic department does not give 2 craps about basketball. We have the worst attendance in the SoCon and a nice basketball arena. Little to no effort is put into effectively promoting the basketball team to the students. People do not realize that football sells itself. All the football games would have been sold out regardless of the stupid "No Equal" catchphrase they came up with. The people marketing the basketball team fail at doing so.
