Pirates take another one

ItUgly – “The Pirates looked far more at home in easing to a 67-47 victory in front of 3,719 fans. The Mountaineers .. committed 22 TOs and shot 32% from the field (14 of 44). And that figure would have been much worse without a big game from Jamaal Trice, who scored a game-high 27 points, including 5-of-8 from 3. No other App player scored more than 7.”

Sadly, instead of our basketball program rising to the standards set by football the opposite may be happening. Whether or not that's the case, basketball clearly has a long, long way to go. Still.

I wonder if the athletic department was happy with the turnout? I heard the atmosphere was great, but I figured they were expecting more thean 4k fans to make this an annual occurence in charlotte. Don't know if a weeknight game right before thanksgiving hurt the crowd at all either.

I think the game would be better received after Christmas. I hope it is yearly game for us, I think a presence in Charlotte is important for the program.

ECU really didn't bring many fans which surprised me.

We have hands down some of the most homely cheerleaders I have ever seen.

very sad. Our team has yet to play a solid game in the first half it seems (except against the L-M). And with our inside height, why are we shooting 8 3 pointers in the first half? Control the ball slow the tempo and work it inside.

McCray, we took so many threes because we absolutely couldn't work the ball down low, they stole it almost every time in their zone d. And every time Butts had good position for some reason he would kick the ball out, even in great scoring position.

Very poor performance. Trice was the only player who showed up last night. Lazy passes, not boxing out or taking care of the ball are fundamentals that need to be addressed.

ECU played pretty good D but there were definitely missed opportunities and rolls to the basket and back doors. When the Pirates played that zone, we would just dribble the ball around until the shot clock got under 10. Has the team ever practiced off the ball screens? How about bringing Williamson or Butts to the high post and force the zone to collapse and pass the ball out to the weak side? Move without the ball! And for god sakes, can players stop jacking up deep 3 balls when there's still over 20 seconds on the shot clock. You can get that terrible shot anytime during the shot clock. Use your heads, look for better shot selections.

Most of our guys looked to be hesitant. GO UP STRONG!!! I don't care if they get blocked but watching them hesitate or pump fake only to get blocked or brick the shot is embarrassing.

Hey Butts, last time I checked you were a BIG man. Why do you bring the ball below your shoulders? There is no need for you to dribble. If you can't get low enough position, kick it back out and re-establish yourself on the block. Catch the ball and go up!

The defense would play well for about 27 seconds of the shot clock then they'd bail ECU out with a mental lapse or foul. Why would the defense allow their season high scorer, Paul, wide open opportunities? Did we not scout them?

I hate to be so negative but ASU did not play Div 1 b-ball last night. The players did not receive Div 1 coaching. It was quite a pathetic effort by our Mountaineers.

Actually, I thought we should have been looking for Trice and the 3's earlier. We seemed hellbent on forcing everything inside the entire game.

They had open looks because we could not stop their dribble penetration and they passed the ball well.

Also, missed free throws were a killer for a team trying to come back from a double digit deficit for most of the game.

It was great to have a local game, but with the cheapest tickets being $18 (with a fee even at the box office), $9 beers and the assorted high-priced concessions, and $15 parking, it's just not an affordable night for a 2 hour long basketball game.

I can go to UNCC, park for free and buy a $9 ticket. Why not just play a road game at Halton, instead of trying to play a "home" game in Charlotte? At most, there were 2500 App Fans.

Even drinking did not make this game look any better. I will be honest and say that I walked out with almost 10 minutes left in the game. I can only stand watching my alma mater get kicked in the junk for so long and I head to the house.

BTW…Would someone explain to Capel how to argue poor officiating? Smiling and patting the officials on the back works for a while, but it does take a little yelling eventually.

Lacrosse – I did see some yelling from him, but it was immediately silenced the minute they acknowledged him. It kind of reminded me of a child who stops whining the minute their parents look their way. At a certain point you have to make the point to your team that you are fighting for them, and they will fight for you. I always liked Coaches like Dean Smith, Coach K, Lou Pinella…who would get a Technical or get ejected just to show their team they had their backs.

  23. ASU Lacrosse 18

    November 23, 2011 at 12:32 pm

Jamey, there was one point in the second half where Capel had yelled at that one ref for about a full minute and eventually the ref yelled ENOUGH and Capel shook his head and crouched. I think the players know he has there back. The players love him, Omar has said it before. I know what you mean about a tech or two to show you care, but I don't think it would have changed anything. I really hope Capel can fix this team. I like the guy a lot, and I like this team a lot on paper, we just need to put a solid game together and hold on to the ball. We also need a consistent scorer. With Omar seeming to be all or a little, we need someone to step up. We complained some last year when it seemed like all the team did was stand around and watch Sims and hope he did something. Well, there is no Sims to watch. Someone needs to step up and hit shots night in and night out.

I spent $93 for 4 tickets for family entertainment last night. The good thing to come out of last night was, I will not go to another ASU Basketball game this year.

To get beat that bad by a crappy ECU Team is turrible. No wonder no one from Charlotte will travel to Boone to see a game. Why would we want to see this group play basketball. They showed me they don't care.

sorry i missed you at the game.. i didnt see you. I DID see ralph sampson's son (approx. 7'4" center from uva the last time they had a team who went on to nba) guy is the spitting image of his dad.

    also jamey,

capel WAS yelling at the refs, as was the entire arena. I thought when villarino came in it would spark somewhat of a turnaround but such was not quite the case. We could not get any shots to fall and missed the opportunities we did have. hopefully this team will learn from this and have milligan to fine tune before taking on uncg in boone. the more fan support this team has the better, it encourages higher performance.

Hey Unbelieveable if you paid $93 for 4 tickets the scalper you bought them from burned you. We got our 4 for $80 from ASU ticket office and were good seats = midcourt, few rows up. It's a shame our guys had an off game though, but it is early in the season. Conference play starts next week. I guess if I go, I won't see you at the Milligan game Saturday. I'm in.

There was no offensive flow for us in this game. The guys have to move off the ball not stand around and wait for someone to do some. Also, somebody has got to step up and be the emotional leader for this team as it appears that not a single player has any fire and they didn't appear to care when they got down. Hopefully Capel can get his team ready to go for conference play.

Interestingly enough, while at the game I noticed a man a couple of seats down from me with a huge rock on his finger. Turned out to be Shawn Taggart and his Memphis Final Four ring.

Well it looks like you guys from charlotte will not travel to charlotte either. 3700 in your blessed home town? that meca of ASU alum? Charlotte is a neutral site and all college games should be home games. This ECU envy is still killing me. This is one more reason to hope we will not be on TV. Empty stands are embarrasing

Didn't Cobb create a committee and spend a bunch of Mark Harrell's money trying to boost attendence?
