Carving up Lions, feasting on opportunity

SweetnessHey Mr. DJ had a better Thanksgiving than you.

He gave ’em hell!

Injuries to starting inside linebackers Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk might open the door for rookie D.J. Smith to start for the Packers starting in Week 13. Smith replaced Bishop in the first half of the team’s game on Thursday at Detroit and finished with six total tackles. Not only was Smith impressive in the game, but head coach Mike McCarthy lauded him for his work in a tough situation. “I give a lot of credit to our young linebackers that stepped up,” McCarthy said of Smith and teammate Rob Francois, who had an interception. “We had no defensive communication from the time A.J. Hawk went out. A.J. and Desmond are the communicators for our defense. Just the boundary discipline, the communication, the signaling, two young guys in there running the defense, that’s big-time stuff. That’s real football. That’s adversity.”

Packers next play Giants December 4. He could start.

The undersized (5-foot-10 5/8) Smith, a sixth-round draft pick out of Appalachian State, showed instincts playing the run in training camp and finished Thursday with five tackles, which tied for third-most on the team.

“I like him,” Capers said. “You evaluate how a young guy handles the pressure of the business. I think he’s instinctive, I don’t think it’s too big for him, I think he has good movement. You see his lower center of gravity helps him sometimes being able to change direction, has natural leverage on people. He’s a pretty bright young guy. I think he’s a good young prospect.”

And that's why I had him sign my Michigan Upset Sports Illustrated. Very underrated player with phenomenal instincts!
