Next – Go huntin’ for some bears

What's for lunch???? App State begins its 2011 playoff run at home against Maine. It’s the second round of the FCS playoffs. No television, but there is ESPN3. Kickoff at 2 p.m. Here are four downs.

1st Down – 9-9-9
Nine years ago Maine traveled to App State to open the I-AA playoffs. App State led 13-7 until Maine went 80 yards in nine plays and scored the go-ahead TD with just over nine minutes to play. Black Bears advanced, 14-13. Two flashbacks from the game. App State led 10-0 until Maine scored with just over minute left in third. Joe Burchette threw for just 73 yards, 135 yards below his average.

2nd Down – Points apart
App State averages 30 points a game. Maine averages 29 points a game. The App State defense gives up 23 points a game. The Maine defense gives up 24 points a game. Even more coincidental? Both teams are almost even on offensive TDs scored. Each has 22 rushing TDs, with App getting one more in the air (18) than Maine (17).

3rd – Only lose to the very best
Maine’s two FCS losses came to Towson and New Hampshire, which finished a combined 18-4 on the season. The New Hamp loss was on the road by three points, 30-27, in the regular season finale.

4th Down – Very superstitious …. writing’s on the wall
If it’s an odd-numbered year, expect a first-round nail-biter. In 2009 it was a 19-all score midway in the fourth when SC State fumbled on a fourth-and-one. Dominique McDuffie got the ball and flipped the score to 20-13, App win. In 2007 the Mountaineers owned a fragile 28-27 lead over James Madison when the Dukes took to the 9-yard line with less than 30 seconds to go. Instead of a chippy FG for the win, the Dukes tried to advance just a bit closer and fumbled the ball. App wins. In 2005, Lafayette and App started the fourth tied at 20. It was 27-23 App with six to go when a Daniel Bettis 26-yard TD catch put the game away.

I still get chills over that App playoff win over JMU at The Rock! Let's beat Maine soundly please without all the drama of that JMU edition of a "Miracle on the Mountain" game. Not sure my heart can take too many more of those type App wins.

    Give Em Hell!!

For some reason, I knew we'd stop JMU (was expecting a blocked kick that year). The big moment for me was the 4th down on the previous App drive when Armanti looked to run, was contained, and then lobbed a pass to a diving Devon Moore.

    We're good at home.

Devon Moore made a diving catch while chaning direction on that play. It was unreal. The JMU fumble call may be my all time favorate David Jackson and Steve Brown radio call.

This is the first year since 2006 that I feel our D could win us a playoff game. If the D starts out strong, we'll play the field position game.

Just bought my season ticket seats for this game! Only thing that would make this game better, if it was colder and preferably snowing. Either way, playoff football in December at The Rock. You can't get much better.

Hopefully we have a good crowd. Nice to see the athletic department picking up the tab and letting all the students in free. That in itself will bring alot of intensity. Get there early and be loud. Maine maybe used to the cold but they sure arent used to the noise that The Rock brings.

Honestly my 2nd favorite call was on the 4th and 2. Brownie saying what is Mickey Matthews thinking. AKA the million dollar question

Thanks for the link appmaj. I listened to the Wofford radio calls too. The color guy for Wofford sounds like a 12 year old.

    Go App!

Ray Ray says Sunny high of 50, Lows in the lower 30s. Only thing to make it better would be snow.

Don't have a good feeling about this game, to be honest. Worried about our o-line. Lots of holes. Hope I'm wrong!

It's going to be a tough game… I hope we pull out all the big guns (as we usually do when we play at home–especially in the playoffs). It could stand to be a lot colder, but you also have to keep in mind that cold weather would not affect Maine one bit.

i think our team will perform better in 40-50 degree weather than bone chilling weather. I'm certain more fans will show up with 40's on the forecast rather than 20's

If our o-line plays out-of-their-mind well (they haven't yet), then we'll win, if not … hope the D scores (ala Chatty).
