The goodness of the Quickness

The promotion of App State’s springy NFL wide receiver prospect has ……. begun!

2012 season will now open at East Carolina

Request – “To help accommodate the Southeastern Conference’s move from 12 to 14 teams in 2012, App State has agreed to flip-flop games versus Montana and East Carolina on its 2012 schedule. Appalachian now travels to ECU for the Sept. 1 season opener before hosting Montana in the home opener on Sept. 8.”

About all these coaching rumors

We have no clue what’s going on. None.

We know the App State foozball team has 11 assistants. We know two are gone – Mark Speir and Mike Kent. That leaves nine guys standing, five of whom are Mountaineers.

Too many alumni? /shrug. Back in 2006, five of the 10 assistants were App grads, and no one was complaining then. And of those 10 assistants, only four remain – Chris Moore, Jason Blalock, Brad Glenn and Dale . . . → Read More: About all these coaching rumors

‘Whee gets a good one

Almost official.

Almost.

At an 11 a.m. press conference today, WCU is expected to introduce Appalachian State assistant Mark Speir as its new football coach.

Speir, 43, is the inside linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator at ASU who also spent five years (1991-96) as an assistant at WCU.

Speir and new Catamounts’ athletic director Randy Eaton didn‘t return phone calls and e-mails Wednesday seeking comment.

Speir had a final interview in Cullowhee on Tuesday with his wife Paige . . . → Read More: ‘Whee gets a good one

Shadow group looking to create new FBS league

Wood Selig, AD at Old Dominion, was a guest last week on Tony Mercurio’s sports talk radio show in Norfolk.

At the start of their conversation, Selig said he just got back from a meeting of the National Football Foundation in New York City. More than 800 college foozball folk from all levels were there.

The focus was on depleting expense accounts scholarships, but chatter was all over the place, including about …

App State assistant linked to ‘Whee job

Hmmmm – “There are a couple of names being bantered about in Cullowhee that fit that description. The first is Mark Speir, the inside LB coach and recruiting coordinator at App State. After graduating from Clemson in 1990 Speir was an assistant coach at Western Carolina from 1991-96 and was with the Catamounts the last time they had back-to-back winning seasons (1993 and ’94).” So, if hired, he’d be forced to return to ….. /shrudders … eww …

Little O in the Beef O Bowl

Minimal – “The frustration and fury at self displayed by Hilton, who had just fumbled after catching a third down pass, summed up FIU’s 20-10 2011 Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl loss to Marshall. The big-play Panthers not only got zero big plays, but got played by three big plays, the last a gutsy call by Marshall. FIU finishes the season 8-5.” The FIU offense is led by an App State great. Former App assistant gets S. Miss job

From El Cid to CUSA – “Unlike the last two Division I football coaches hired in Mississippi, Ellis Johnson won’t be charged with a rebuilding job. The South Carolina defensive coordinator was introduced Tuesday as head coach at Southern Miss.” Johnson was defensive coordinator at App State for one season, 1984, under new head coach Sparky Woods (Mack Brown left previous year). That team went 4-7, 2-5 in SoCon. Johnson was also head coach for three seasons at El . . . → Read More: Former App assistant gets S. Miss job
