I'm still going to the SoCon tournament next weekend. Asheville is a great venue; visiting with some very old and dear friends; and seeing the App b-ballers play one more game in this most forgettable of all seasons. Well, two out of three is still a pretty good reason to party in Asheville!!!

Forget the tree in the forest, if App loses a game to a bottom feeder and no one cares enough about the season to do anything about it, does the loss still count?

Time to bring in a REAL basketball coach. This has spiraled down enough.

The problem with the current team is having 3 different coaches and schemes in 4 years.. that takes a HUGE toll on the players.

I am not defending Capel because he has not done well at all, but letting him go now would mean 4 different coaches in 5 years, learning a whole new system, etc.

It will be hard pressed to find a coach with the kind of money we can offer to change the program around without some time in it. Again, not defending Capel, but calling for his head will only add to the down years. We simply do not have/put the money into the basketball program to get a coach who can change the atmosphere over night.

"3-of-22 three-pointers" SERIOUSLY…. Either Capel do some serious work on this team's three point shot accuracy, or needs to develop more movement near the boards to open up the short to mid range shot.

3 of 22 (I can do better than that contested from half court!)

just watched the ASU/Elon highlights (all Elon) from the elonphoenix site. All I saw was more of the same lazy, careless stuff that plagues the b-ball team in pretty much every loss they have. Didn't even look like they were trying on defense…doesn't look like they care to win. Lots of standing around, no passion, no energy..on a team with 4 seniors. Wow! This is also a team that probably had more overall talent than they've had in a few years (especially when Milum was still around) Trice has disappeared, Carter is Jeckyll and Hyde, Butts is nonexistent, unless it's senior day. The only player that plays hard and to his potential is a walk-on, and most of the time the freshmen. I know I'm stating the obvious, but what is the issue? If these players wanted Capel so bad, why aren't they playing hard for him?

Yogi, what talented coaches are you referring to that we didn't try to keep? Buzz Peterson chose to leave twice despite efforts to keep him. That is why this team has been in a mess for two years. What other talented coaches? Houston Fancher? Tom Apke? Matt McMahon?

@Eddie…well starting with Cremins, then there's his hand-picked successor Kevin Cantwell. He was good. As for Buzz, that whole deal was so poorly handled. When you take away their first two years after losing Rufus and kicking key players off the team from Buzz's tournament team, Fancher and Matt where very successful. Every kid graduated with a ring. Those players where in the community, they worked my kids school events. I work at the school and constantly saw coaches checking classes. Shoot, both Fancher's and Matt's wives worked in my department.

We need someone invested on ASU and Boone that represented us in the manner that Fancher and Matt did!

  28. Alum00

    February 24, 2012 at 4:13 am

Ballfan..I so agree with you. The buzz thing was all about the money. The reason why Matt didn't get the job was about the AD hiring a minority. Shame on ASU. Matt M bled ASU and would have done a world of wonders for our program. Now Matt M is having a world of sucess at Murray State. There is no way that we could ever get him back after how we treated him. I am sick to my stomach.

I like Coach C personally so this is no slam on him at all, but I really wish Matt McMahon had been given the chance at the HC position. He'd EARNED it and he DESERVED it and would have done a GREAT JOB!

Ceez, you have been smoking the killer weed. No teams in Conference USA, for example, get 4 & 5 Star players in any sport. Maybe if ASU goes to the ACC they may get a 4 star basketball prospect. The ACC thingy ain't going to happen in my lifetime.

OK, let's start the men's BB run through the Southern High School Conference tournament.

  31. BIG DAVE

    February 24, 2012 at 4:50 am

Quit your whining about past coaches. Nobody got it done since Bobby and he got players because he had a name when he got here.

This team has no leadership on the court, and two styles of play. On with Butts and one with out and as such has no identity. As for kdis graduation with a ring? really? a Northern Division Championship? Wow!

Fancher did nothing. His assistant Matt while a gutty player and bench coach was part of Fanchers average tenure.

We took a chance on Capel and need to see this through to year 4 or 5 and put some more coin into the program. I hate losing as much as any of you but this constant " I told you so" stuff is getting old. You people calling for a head coaches removal from an inherited crappy program after a couple of years is what is wrong with college sports. After 5 years with his kids then you can bitch.

  32. Appy97,00

    February 24, 2012 at 5:02 am

because BIG DAVE told you that you could? Come on now, we have the right to bitch about the lack of intensity, desire, passion, etc. no matter who is coaching. My problem is that, apparently, the players really wanted Capel (probably just a few in reality). Of course they wanted him if he's a nice guy and easy to relate to, etc. But, if that is a major factor in hiring him, the real problem lies with administration of the program from the AD and outside political influences.

  33. Appinthehouse

    February 24, 2012 at 5:28 am

Our history does not change our current position but it is relevant.

I agree that Fancher never recovered the new asu football fan trust from the Elon game but to say he did nothing is not accurate. His players and teams are the majority all time leaders in our school history. I have stated this before, he had built a program that represented asu well. And I disagree, a diploma and a ring is a great accomplishment.

Big Dave you don't have a clue about what you're saying. All Houston did was graduate players and win Divisional titles in spite of having one of the lowest budgets in the conference. The only thing lower than our RPI (down to 263 and is sure to drop again when the new rankings come out) now is our APR (Academic Progress Reports). During Fancher's tenure ASU basketball consistently ranked in the top ten percent in the country with a score in the 970's. Just wait until you see what it is this next time. It is easy to take cheap shots when you are ignorant of the facts.

    February 24, 2012 at 5:47 am

    Big Dave,

I don't agree that Capel should get an automatic four or five years.

I think he has to get a third year. Two years simply isn't "a fair shot". Firing him (now) would reflect very poorly on the administration and make it more difficult to attract a quality coach to the program.

However, after the team's performance in year two, there has to be significant improvement in year three to earn the fourth year.

Where could extra money be spent to improve performance if it isn't spent to hire a "better" coach? Unless the recruiting budget is way too low (and based on the talent brought in recently, it doesn't appear to be), I don't see how more money could result in better performance.

We don't have the money for FB and we don't have the money for BB. This is very interesting. Why don't we ever hear money as an excuse at the other schools in the SOCON that are supposed to be below our standards. Those little private schools that we need to get away from don't seem to have the money problems that we do. The money excuse is just that. The real deal is that we have hired the FB coaches that we have because it has worked in the past and it is cheap. The reason we don't invest in BB is because we don't care about BB. Look in the stands. You have no argument. The stands are empty because everyone is home watching ACC BB or just don't care about BB at all.

Buzz left for money because MJ does not support him anymore. No more free cars etc. The mooch who never really earned his own way is gone and we are better for it. Just a side note UNCW had more money?

  38. appdreamin

    February 24, 2012 at 6:53 am

    Reportedly, they did, sideline.

However, our real BP error was rehiring him after he left the first time–not because there's anything wrong with a coach, especially a young one, taking a better (than SoCon) position, but because of how he handled the departure from App and the fact that he bolted Tulsa after one year. Those factors were indications of loyalty and character–or lack thereof–that should have precluded his being a candidate for rehire.

We’re better off without Peterson, even though he was the best coach we’ve had since Cremins. But two years in, there’s no evidence that we’re better off with Capel. No way he or any other top-level hire gets five years to prove himself, or even four.

big dave you are typical of so many blow hard fans who think they know everything but in reality know very little. Considering ASU has won just 2 conference championships in 40+ years of SmallCon play, especially in light ow what we've endured the past two seasons, I'd say a divisional title is a fairly substantial accomplishment. Did I say it was the best we should expect from our program? No. But you made the idiotic statement "Fancher did nothing" and I pointed out that wasn't the case. If Capel is given another 3 years like you have decreed our program will be in such despair it'll take 5 to get it back to where it was when he took over. BTW, have you checked out "his kids" coming in next year? A mediocre (at best) juco player who's only other offer was from one of the few basketball programs worse than ours (Troy 7-17 RPI 275 compared to ASU's 263) and a high school kid offered by college basketball heavyweights UNCG, Furman, Tenn Tech and Tenn State. Capel loves to chastise the players for not playing hard, not giving enough effort and not playing with heart. What he fails to recognize is he CAN'T COACH! Contrary to what some of you experts think ASU has some of if not the best talent in the conference. We simply have a coach who does not know what to do with it. Against Citadel Capel used his 13th different starting line-up this season. Yet you think he needs 3 more years, moron.
