protests workRepeat – “App State has reinstated suspensions for two football players a university board found responsible for sex offenses but who were later allowed back on campus after officials discovered an error in how their hearing was conducted.” Players not named.

"Appalachian State University has reinstated suspensions for two football players a university board found responsible for sex offenses"

"The Watauga district attorney's office is investigating, but neither man has been charged with any crime."

It seems like, if they wanted to make a fuss and blame some one besides the men they accuse of the actual crime, they'd go after the agency that DIDN'T do anything. The "waited too long" thing is BS.

Very glad all parties involved are gone from ASU. Nothing to see here.

I will say that it is at least nice to see some actual real journalism related to this case. We finally have some facts, reporting and not opinion. Gonzo, unfortunately, all parties are not gone from ASU. Tanyi will be a senior next year and is on the team. He was reported to be getting a look at NT this spring, since the return of Wray and depth at DE. Seems like we won't have to find a spot for him afterall.

Dr. Gonzo you're an idiot. All parties are not gone from App. You should really pay attention more. If you go read the article released by the Winston Salem journal you will learn REAL facts.

Anyway, it says the suspensions have been reinstated and one of the accusers left a while ago. Looks like one of the accusers is still at App. My mistake. Notice to male students: If you find yourself on the verge of intimacy with a field hockey player, have her sign a consent form. I'd get it notorized

    March 11, 2012 at 11:33 pm

Say what you want, but I am sickened by the way the administration has handled this whole situation. The ONLY reason those suspensions are back in effect is because of public pressure when students felt unsafe. I hate to have to say this but our administration put athletics before the good of this university. Sickening.

From what I know about ASU (feel free to correct me if anyone knows better)a student's can't get suspended from campus by one individual in most circumstances. A hearing must be properly conducted, in this instance ASU failed to follow UNC system protocol and the initial hearing and suspension was turned over (and rightfully so). A re-hearings were conducted in accordance with UNC system protocol and the suspensions were re-instated. Sounds to me like they did a good job correcting their procedural mistakes.

My guess is he won't because he is a professional Doctor of Juris Prudence. He actually has to satisfy a burden of proof instead of convincing a bunch of kids of somethin that they've already made up their minds. Campus court is a joke.

The media, drunk on the sensationalism of this story, has painted a guilty picture in the weak minds of certain constituents. If this girl was really driven for "justice," she'd press charges in a real court of law. She is keeping the matter in a quack campus court and the court of public opinion because she knows that's the only way she won't be exposed for being a liar.

Jamey, I don't think they/we were/are protecting players. They were kicked off the team and out of school during the season, made a brief appearance and then out again for one. This is about the system not the football team. I assure you that sexual assaults are more prevelant among the general student population.

Do not vilify all the young men playing football because of the alledge actions of a couple.

Students courts are a joke. My daughter and one of her classmates were accused of cheating at Chapel Hill by a person in a class and presumed guilty until they were "aquitted". The accuser never had to appear before them and to this day remains anonymous to this day. They endured weeks of hell. Fortunately the professor came to their defense. Student courts have way too much latitude and lack of training and it is very easy to accuse and walk away without any adverse consequence.

I can't understand why anyone would put themselves in the public eye like these young women have unless they felt they were wronged by the system. It is one thing for one person to do it but for two to go public I think is a very brave thing to do.

    March 12, 2012 at 6:57 am

Considering the entire "controversy" surrounding the uplifting of the suspension was based on what can be considered a "mistrial" (an appealable occurrence in a real court) and was appealed and the ruling found to be upheld, I am having trouble deciphering why the accuser's advocates are up in arms about the "administrative cover up". This is not the illuminati it is just a very sensitive private issue.

If your boss thinks you're stealing, he'll probably fire you. He doesn't need to take you to court. Ever since I learned that this case was handled by a nine member university board, and not student court, I was comfortable with the school addressing the issue. It should still come up in court, because these guys should be locked up if they did it, but I think we should all accept that it should take less than a violent crime conviction to get somebody kicked out of school.

Do not believe so. GoASU is not going to be streaming it, I know that much. Currently, I do not even see a link for live audio on our site. However, you can go to and listen to live audio from their broadcasters at game time. I will probably do that while at work, it is always interesting to hear the other side's announcers take on our team.

As for the SC game, I'm sure it will be streamed on their site. However, it would be a lot more fun to just join us at Carolina Stadium! I'm very excited about heading down for that one. It is a beautiful facility, can't wait to see it first hand.

Did not intend to villify the entire team or the entire athletic department. I believe 99% of our student athletes are genuinely good people who strive for excellence on and off the field.

As for the school's handling…my concern is that this would not have come back up without student pressure. The appeals were heading down a "just ignore it and let this fade away" path until the students made it an issue. I commend the student body for simply asking the question "What really happened?" Whatever it was it sickens me that it is related to my great alma mater.

As far as I know, new hearings have NOT been held yet, so I don't think that's the reason for re-instating the suspensions. New hearings are scheduled for after the return from Spring Break. Jamey and Clayton make good points. Serious questions remain concerning the initial revocation of the suspensions. The timing is also interesting–re-instating the suspensions on the Friday afternoon before Spring Break when it would draw minimal attention. Could be coincidence, I suppose.

  60. appalachian95

    March 14, 2012 at 12:44 am

Enough already, this entire incident has been handled unprofessionally in my opinion, the timeline, the re-instatements of suspensions right before spring break, the cover up by the athletic department, eveyone is thinking about themselves instead of the alleged accusers, granted when I played football and baseball from 92-96 there were some incidents that were never reported that should have been,I have seen some things in Justice that I was not happy about, granted these off campus parties can run wild, I have seen some of the things that have gone on at these parties, on campus you can not get by with too much, that is why there were more off campus parties when I was at Appalachian State, you could get by with more, never witnessed anyone getting raped but I am sure it happened, we all make choices in life that could follow us the rest of our lives, granted thses incidents are probably not going to be accessible when you apply for a job, and I agree the campus court is a "joke" for sure, students being held accountable over incidents that they have no experience at, leave it up to the courts, I am sure that if the DA thought there was enough evidence he would have filed charges in 2011, I think the incident was not all one sided as we might think, but only the individuals involved really know what happened, let's put these behind us and talk about how great the "Baseball" team is doing, great to have another team doing so well, the grapplers also did well in 2011-12?
