Don't Miss

Another sweep, this one historic (Update: No. 29!)

Here comes the ....

The Citadel scored three runs in the ninth inning, but Appalachian State threw out the tying run at the plate to hold on for a 7-6 victory and a three-game sweep of the Bulldogs in college baseball.

Dude. How big a deal is this? First three-game sweep of El Cid .. evah!

Also first 6-0 SoCon start in … /dramatic pause34 years!

Next up, at High Point Tuesday. Then a biggie – three-game series at third-place Elon, which is 12-8, 6-3.

MORE. Historic.

I can't explain how great it feels to have a sport other than football be relevant. I do love football, and it may be my favorite sport, but the Apps haven't been recognized for anything outside of football in a long, long time. This is a great start to the season. Let's hope it lasts out. Good luck!

#29? Leave it to numbers-obsessed baseball to have a top 30 poll! But good that we're in at least one top something listing.

LSU is back up to #8 and we accounted for half their four losses. SoCar is still #6 even after dropping a couple since we played them, at least one to undefeated Kentucky. From a hurried scan, I think there are only four teams in the listing above with a record better than 17-3. I realize many teams play better competition than most of our opponents, but still–are the schedules of all these schools so much better than ours as to value our record at only #29?

A little bit of love from Baseball America, too. Not in the Top 25 but here is their response to a question about ASU and our chances at winning the SoCon or getting an at-large:

Aaron Fitt: I think Appalachian State is a very legitimate contender for the SoCon title — that weekend rotation is pretty legit. I think that series this weekend at Elon will tell us a lot about the state of the SoCon; hopefully there will be a Baseball America contingent in Elon for that one.
    (Last question at the bottom)

If they plan on sending some guys to watch the series, could be very likely we sneak in the rankings with a good showing. The rankings may not mean a whole lot but any recognition is always a positive, especially if we end up having to sweat it out and hope for an at-large.

One thing I don't understand in the polls is how Texas can be #25 with a 10-8 record. I guess these pollsters are smarter then me because it looks to me that they are just barely over 500 and there are at least 100 teams with better records then that. I understand weighing in your schedule but "Comeon Man"

To see the baseball team getting national recognition and the wrestling team have 2 All-Americans makes me immensely proud to the a Mountaineer. A 100% agree with Jared, it is great to see some of our student athletes from other sports get some attention. These teams are proving that ASU is more than just a football school. Keep up the EXCELLENT work and good luck to all of our student athletes. I wish I could make it up for the series this weekend, but we welcomed a brand new (future Mountaineer) this week and I have to look after the little mane.

It will probably be tough to keep the ranking with the big out of conference games behind us, but this is huge for the program and for positioning the team for a possible at large birth in the tournament.

Early season games in Boiling Springs and good weather are two nice changes from years ago.

Of course that is the goal. But the SoCon has gotten at large bids before. It's baseball. Bad teams get hot.

  19. WacoKid

    March 20, 2012 at 6:15 am

Gwaltineer- With the SoCon being ranked as high as it is we will be able to maintain our ranking as long as we keep winning. CofC, WCU, and Elon are all highly rated teams so our SOS will most likely improve as the season goes. We need LSU to keep winning as well. Two years ago the SoCon was the #9 league in RPI and it had 3 teams in the tourney. As of now it is ranked #8. The auto bid is the goal, but it's nice to have a backup if needed.

  20. Dr. Gonzo

    March 20, 2012 at 6:33 am

Does anyone else think we're a little under ratted? Sure the SoCon is no SEC/ACC, but half our schedule so far has been against ACC and SEC opponents, two of which we beat and one in which we had a very strong showing. Strength of schedule isn't necessarily all conference opponents, especially at the very beginning of a season.

It is strange that our conference is perceived as weaker than most of these others in the top 30, yet we don't get a rank until we play our first SoCon game rather than after the LSU or USC game. Maybe it's just the 17-3 record. Hard to deny those kind of numbers.

  21. asumike83

    March 20, 2012 at 6:48 am

Like all polls, it is all about perception. The Citadel is way down this year but they are traditionally a very strong baseball program. We were already on the radar, then a strong showing at South Carolina and a sweep of El Cid probably opened the eyes of some voters.

With High Point, Elon and College of Charleston coming up over the next two weeks, our SOS will improve and we'll really be tested. If we can stay hot through this next stretch of games, we will likely crack the Top 25 in all of the major polls, and deservedly so.

According to the SBC board, UNCC received an informal invite. But most of the talk revolves around how bringing in Cee could get App State to the conference.

On one hand, I hate the idea of being in a league with a start-up team, but this could give us the regional rival answer we've been looking for. I don't see us losing any games to them for a decade though. It would be a similar relationship to what we have with WCU now. Regional, but not competitive.

I'm not sure if UNCC is even all that interested in the Sun Belt. I think they'd be wise to join if they get an invite but it sounds like they may decline. It would get them FBS and be a much better baseball conference but is a step down in basketball and offers no regional travel partner, which has always been a primary complaint about the A10.

If App and Charlotte were to both get an invite, that could be very interesting. Not sure how likely that is though. Honestly, I'm just ready for all this realignment to be over. It is tiring!

Yeah, Yogi. Wofford did what we couldn't–held down SoCar's offense and eventually won it 5-4 in 11. I stumbled onto the Sports South broadcast in the 7th and watched the remainder of the game. Wofford kept leaving people on base, but looked more potent offensively than SC. In one stretch beginning in the 8th, SC went nine or ten straight without a hit and with only one or two baserunners from walks.

Middie, this isnt the time for an economic boycott. If anything the programs need more $.

  48. Dr. Gonzo

    March 22, 2012 at 6:48 am

Chill out MIDWEST. You're doomsday mentality is unwarranted. Thanks for admitting how fair weather you are though. Cee has/will never surpass App in overall athletics, even if they get a Sunbelt invite a month before we do.

Cee will never leave the A-10 in all sports for anything but the Alliance and that invite isn't going to happen before they field a team. Since the SBC has no desire to have them for anything but all sports, Cee will play FCS indy, join the CAA in all sports or join the MAC for football only.

The App administration is still working on forming this new conference, but aside from the dubious task of selecting/uniting these schools, there's also a fair amount of red tape to deal with in the process. Current NCAA legislation prohibits any FCS school or group of FCS schools from moving up without an invite from an FBS conference. This rule has never been challenged in court, so there is hope for some sort of cooperative anti-trust lawsuit from the group of FCS schools. Another way to get around it would involve enlisting the support of some bottom-feeding FBS programs. Since they're already FBS, they could form the conference and invite up the droves of top-FCS prospects. There are also several other similar FBS/FCS rules that the NCAA doesn't enforce (minimum attendance ect).

Anyway, there are plenty of ways to make this happen, but it is not an overnight process. I applaud the administration for not jumping straight to the belt, who would be happy to have us.

The comment by the AD that App is "unlikely to move up" along with the mention of UTSA and UNCC getting invites is a scare tactic, a ploy to put the fire under the realistic candidates for the conference like App State. The conference leaders are not naive enough to think that Charlotte will join for all sports, nor are they dumb or desperate enough to add them for just football.

This low-end FBS conference shifting has become a poker game and App is holding onto its cards until our best options are completely out of the question. I'm just as impatient as the rest of you, but I'm willing to let it all play out as well as possible to maximize the benefits to ASU.

  50. Apppgrad

The only problem is the comments Peacock made regarding the acc being the only option they would jump at. If for some reason we decide not to move up I will not cut my donations out completely but it will significantly less considering you do not need a lot of money to play fcs.

  51. Dr. Gonzo

    March 22, 2012 at 7:05 am

Peacock has explicitly mentioned several times that this new FBS conference is his/our #1 choice. #1 realistic choice that is. I'm sure he'd jump at an ACC/SEC/NFC South invite, but that ain't happenig

  52. Appgrad

    March 22, 2012 at 7:38 am

I know those will not happen but I've heard that Peacock has stated he would rather stay in fcs to various people. He's might be using this new conference idea to stall the move.

  58. Dr. Gonzo

Private Corporation? You put the moron on oxymoron

  59. asumike83

    March 22, 2012 at 10:37 am

No way we can know what the future holds if they don't either. I do agree that we need to be informed in at least a general capacity though.

For example, confirming or denying what this Sun Belt AD said about us being 'unlikely to move up' would have been nice. Being completely silent basically gives negative consent to anyone out there to say what they want about our intentions.

    March 22, 2012 at 10:56 am

Please read my post again. You missed it.

The point is we never hear anything about a vision from this department. Nothing…nilch…nadda.

This is not healthy for the university.

  61. Appthunder90

    March 22, 2012 at 10:57 am

Perhaps this sun belt ad's words are being quoted out of context. A rare occurrence in media. Maybe he is referring to the fact that Cobb has publicly announced that the sunbelt is not a good geographic fit for Appalachian state.

  62. Dr. Gonzo

    March 22, 2012 at 10:58 am

I agree we need to hear SOMETHING, but you lost me at "private corporation." Corporations are public by definition. Terrible analogy. Just use the word "business" in that context.

    March 22, 2012 at 1:05 pm

public university= taxpayer funded, therefore transparency is needed.

private or family company= limited disclosure needed to general public about strategy, financials, etc.

my only point is that these guys operate OUR athletics department like it's a family business and no one needs to know anything except for them.

  64. appdreamin

    March 22, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Corporations are not "public by definition." Some are, some aren't. The SEC regulates (supposedly) those that are, and demands that they publish reams of financial and other data so that the investing public can be informed. Bankers and other creditors, along with the IRS, essentially regulate the private corporations which, particularly if they have no outside debt, may not even publish financials for external use.

  65. appdreamin

    March 22, 2012 at 1:26 pm

Terminology aside, my bet is that more athletic departments are operated like family-owned businesses than like publicly-traded companies, perhaps with the exception of information shared with truly big-time donors.

App has very few of latter (one of whom reportedly got us our two most recent basketball coaches; if so, do we need more?), even relative to our meager athletic budget. I'm not saying the close-to-the-vest approach is or isn't proper, just that it is probably common.

  66. asumike83

    March 22, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I'm with you, it is quite likely it was taken out of context. Perhaps he was alluding to prior comments by Cobb that the SBC may not be a geographic fit for us.

My point is that if we are speculating about what that means, so are other people out there. Stepping in to clarify that would be nice for the fans to know and very important for potential conferences to know. Ruling out the Sun Belt or any conference at this point would be a bad idea. Would the Sun Belt still not be a good geographical fit if it were an East/West division split and Charlotte and GA Southern were there with us?

I'm not asking to see the notes from their meetings but a little bit of dialogue would be appreciated.

  67. Appthunder90

    March 22, 2012 at 3:23 pm

I believe the words were "sun belt in its present configuration" however I'm not extremely certain. Maybe one of you Yosef club members who may have been attended at one of the events can remember more clearly? In any case, I think these guys know what they are doing. They know how fickle app fans are so they are not going to release the minutes of every meeting so that we can speculate about what they "really mean". I'm getting the vibe that some of us think there is some "ulterior motive" played out in the app administration within every circumstance. I'm not saying those people have been commenting on this thread, just that I have noticed a trend. Most of them are alsO trolls. By the way, uncc still sucks at football.

All we can do is speculate because no one ever communicates a vision and and a strategic action plan to us.

They run the show like PRIVATE corporation, not a public corporation…meaning they don't share any more than they have to. Not right to the people who donate hard-earned money to the program.

  71. Appthunder90

    March 23, 2012 at 5:23 am

While I understand your frustration, the only information you actually have a "right" (using the word loosely) to is that covered under the freedom of information act. The fact that you are constantly urging the administration to "bring in the f-ing closer" leads me to think that you should be ok with the fact that Cobb cannot send you a personalized email everytime he is involved in a discussion to try and sweeten a deal. If we knew exactly what was going on so would our "competitors" and in turn potential conferences and their respective members which could damage not only our reputation but our chances. So my advice to you is pipe down for the time being. Send some emails (not scathing idiotic ones reminiscent of what you post here) urging the administration to keep forging ahead, and enjoy baseball season. They are doing very well if you have not heard.

  72. appdreamin

    March 23, 2012 at 5:41 am

  75. jeff

    March 23, 2012 at 7:59 am

The athletic department is engaged in negotiations. If they publicly announce all of their intentions and plans for attaining their goals they lose all leverage with those they are negotiating with.

We all know the goal is to put us in the best possible FBS conference for long term future success and growth. I think we all know we want CUSA but with the current shake up they aren't ready to take an FCS program so we continue to pursue all options whatever they may be and see how the ever changing landscape of conference alignment shakes out and we find a place to fit into a favorable conference for all Appalachian Sports.

I negotiate rental agreements and sponsor deals all the time and if I openly informed the world of what those deals entail I would be forced to confine to those parameters every time I enter talks. By keeping that information private I can ensure the best possible financial outcome for the company that will benefit all stakeholders regardless of if they know the specifics of the deal.

  76. hapapp

    March 23, 2012 at 8:18 am

The athletic administration can only do so much. It's not like conferences are beating the door down begging ASU to join them. As has been pointed out many times, while we have demonstrated an ability to win on the field and fill a stadium, when it comes to other considerations, we don't have as much to offer as some of our competitors. Our situation is not so different from ECU and their attempts at joining the Big East.

Like everyone else I want to know where things are headed. However, I don't expect to hear anything until something definite is in the works. At least, we don't have folks on this board telling us that it is a done deal that we will do this or that, like last year at this time. We know how those true those statements proved to be.
