Don't Miss

Grant is SoCon Pitcher of the Week

Colt 42Complete – “Seth Grant tossed a complete-game, five-hit shutout in Saturday’s 5-0 win over Elon, marking the first nine-inning shutout in the SoCon this season. The senior from Etowah, N.C., retired 25 of the 31 batters he faced, allowing only five hits and a walk.” His full name? Colton Seth Grant. Soooooo .. Colt 42? Gen. Grant?

Not Gen Grant. That drunk stumbled into a war that was already won and was the worst president of all time.

  2. HOGAN

    March 26, 2012 at 6:39 pm

    YEAH, Dr. Gonzo!

It's about time somebody stuck it to that guy that's been dead for over 100 years who served our country!!

And for the record, I voted Horatio Seymour.

  3. Dr. Gonzo

    March 26, 2012 at 7:43 pm

He served the enemy during the war and had no business in office.

  4. JMcCray

    March 27, 2012 at 4:03 am

Sad thing is, there is no enemy in a civil war. And I'd say that Grant's seige of Vicksburg showed he was more than capable.

    March 27, 2012 at 4:16 am

Anyone on the pitching staff named Sherman? Now THAT guy knew how to win a war.

  6. Dr. Gonzo

    March 27, 2012 at 5:33 am

That's a good one. "Raping and pillaging his way through the batter line up"

Sherman may have been the most racist man in the Civil war, on both sides. He once cut his pontoon bridges, knowingly drowning over 100 newly freed slaves that were following his army around as he raped and burned his was from Atlanta to Savannah. One of the most evil Americans of all time: a true terrorist that would make Bin Laden look like Mother Teresa.

Looks like a different team than the one we had to squeak out a 5-3 win over coming off the 2 LSU wins. Even the same starter we faced last time.

The boys really teed of on that kid and his catcher sure didn't help. Nice bounce-back game and cool to see Alex Leach get his first career HR.

I had no idea that the Lost Cause was alive and well amongst so-called educated alumni… I am embarrassed… So I guess Robert E. Lee was the greatest general to ever live right?!

  21. Run DMC

    March 27, 2012 at 3:16 pm

Am I only educated if I agree with you? Don't be a hater, be a participater! Don't be embarrassed, just leave

  22. JMcCray

Right, because Vicksburg was completely undefended.

  23. jland

    March 27, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Well… Facts are stubborn things, DMC… Though, I'll grant you leniency if you've never read an academic Civil War history book or taken a Civil War class that wasn't at the local Daughters of the Confederacy chapter. If that is the case, then sure… you're educated…

And FYI Dr. Gonzo, the guy who ran Andersonville was perhaps one of the most evil Americans to ever have lived…

  24. crzyfrnk

    March 27, 2012 at 6:59 pm

to jland….for your info….the military tactics taught by Col. Lee..of the US Army, who was the Superintentant of the U.S. Military Academy…West Point to you, are still to this day taught at the Acadamy….he is the only Cadet to ever be commissioned from there with a perfect record of no demerits on his record…..note…George A. Custer was last in his class a few years later….see Sioux…so theory…he may be one of the greatest Generals of all time in US history

  25. Dr. Gonzo

    March 27, 2012 at 7:01 pm

More people died at the Union prison camps than Andersonville. You Yankees couldn't keep your damn diarrhea to yourselves.

Great comeback win over A&T but really they are not a quality team to reckon with after a weekend loss to Elon, granted it helps get other people off the bench some playing time, and who knows we might need them down the road, SoCon Conference is upon us now, not many more out of league games, so we will see how we do, so far looking great, but can not continue to lose to SoCon teams if we want to win our division and the conference championship, but the season is young even though we are 19-3 right now, let's keep up the great work!

  27. appalachian95

    March 28, 2012 at 12:26 am

Seth Grant great pitching, how in the hell did we get on the civil war issue?

What the hell is everyone talking about the Union this and the Union that who gives a damn, I thought this was a forum for discussing ASU Athletics not history or lessons in it? Come on guys get with the program!

  28. ceez

    March 28, 2012 at 3:02 am

Picketts charge was a great tactical move by Lee.

  29. ceez

    March 28, 2012 at 3:19 am

Especially when Burnside tried the same type of move against Lee in Fredricksburg months before Gettysburg.I will give Lee this credit. He didn't attempt to do it over a river and up a hill.

  30. Dr. Gonzo

    March 28, 2012 at 4:12 am

If the 20th Maine hadn't held, the flank would have been turned and the outcome would have been different. That outcome was a result of Longstreet and his timid refusal to do exactly what Lee said.

If you want to talk about a brilliant military victory, let's talk Chancellorsville.

And the Civil War discussion began with Gen Grant being named as a possible nick name for Grant, one of out pitchers. We can certainly do better than that.

  31. ceez

    March 28, 2012 at 5:34 am

I will give that to you Gonzo. 20th Maine holding Little Round Top was key

  33. jland

    March 28, 2012 at 7:58 am

Just because he is taught at West Point doesn't mean anything, he still lost… For those who are blinded by the Lost Cause ideology, read the following book: These Honored Dead by Thomas A. Desjardin. Especially you Dr. Gonzo… With these statements like you've been making, I don't think Dr. is a good moniker for you. The whole debate here is that General Grant would be an awesome nickname for a pitcher who DESTROYS the competition… We southerners (and for the record, I am one) can't get over the fact that we LOST the war.

  34. Dr. Gonzo

    March 28, 2012 at 8:06 am

Who says I can't get over it? I was just saying that Grant was an overrated General and a God awful president and, therefore, I would like the ASU Grant to have a better nickname. At least I actually have some knowledge on the subject and don't need to refer people to some book I didn't write. I studied the war extensively in one part of my life. I don't need to read some Yankee-slanted book to know which men of the period were the best generals.

Maybe you should read a few MORE books if you don't know the origin of Dr. Gonzo. Hint: look at my avatar.

  35. appdreamin

    March 28, 2012 at 9:08 am

Lee was president of a university that was later named for him, partially. Is there a university named for Grant? Or Sherman? In Sherman's case, I certainly hope not.

Nickname idea for Seth Grant: "Nathan Bedford Forest"

  37. hapapp

    March 28, 2012 at 9:28 am

Yeah, the first Grand Wizard of the KKK. I think I would vote for General Grant over Forest.

  38. Dr. Gonzo

    March 28, 2012 at 9:36 am

He founded the Klan back before it was racist. He actually helped black people in Bama. When it turned prejudice and violent, he left. And he was one of most bad ass people of all time. "No man kills me and lives!"

  39. hapapp

    March 28, 2012 at 9:37 am

I don't deny that Forrest was a brilliant military tactician but his actions as both a general and a private citizen were not always exemplary.

Perhaps, we should just stick with Seth and forgo the nickname.

  40. Appftw

    March 28, 2012 at 9:46 am

Regardless of the historical context, General Grant is a pretty good nickname. US Grant was also known as "The Butcher", so maybe that could be a possibility.

I find it hilarious that the south is so ass-backwards that they revere that dumbass car with the stars and bars on it more than the actual General Lee.

  41. Dr. Gonzo

    March 28, 2012 at 9:52 am

That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard. First of all it's 2012. No one remembers that TV show. Robert Edward Lee's legacy will never die. He was a great general and a great man.

Grant got the nickname "the Butcher" because he mounted frontal assault after frontal assault, wearing down the enemy and decimating his forces. A monkey could have taken over the war at that point, done the same thing and won the war for the invading army.

I find it hilarious that northern people take every opportunity to bash the south in every way, yet the move down here by the droves.

  45. appftw

    March 28, 2012 at 4:48 pm

Yeah i was definitely trolling hard, but I didn't expect you to take the bait gonzo. Grant was given the nickname by his own troops yada yada. It was common knowledge just like everything else you've been spouting. I was calling out the maroon that mocked General Lee's prowess.
