Sun Belt adding a couple notches

geezYet. To. Play. A. Down. – “Even before Texas State played its debut season in the WAC, the Bobcats have agreed to join the Sun Belt in 2013, industry sources told The Bobcats will be one of two new Sun Belt members in 2013 along with Georgia State, which is leaving the CAA. The additions offset the losses of North Texas and Florida Intl, which reported are moving to CUSA in 2013.” Meanwhile, yet-to-play-a-down Charlotte rumored to be joining …. /sigh.

RUMORED. No App in sight – “A CUSA source said four schools are a lock to join in 2013: Florida International, Louisiana Tech, Texas-San Antonio and North Texas. The source said the league really wants North Carolina-Charlotte, as long as the latter can raise its football program in a few years, and is intrigued by Old Dominion.

McMurphy reported that all six teams are coming on board, and said an official announcement could come as soon as Friday.”

Size of your market is everything. And for those that say "we're in the Charlotte market", that may be true for tv statistics but it doesn't count for anything if you aren't truly in that metro area. Merits on the field are becoming less relevant, unless you are Boise State. Why else would CHARLOTTE and GEORGIA STATE get consideration other than location?

    May 1, 2012 at 8:39 am

We often balk at the notion of joining a "lesser" conference like the Sun Belt, but it now appears that we would be lucky to even receive an invitation to join that conference.

Atleast two spots left for us/Georgia Southern/new Mexico state/possibly UNCC to fight over. There seems to be a real chance Georgia southern could get in and leave us in the SoCon. If something like that happened because of this "sit back, wait and see" attitude from the administration, every bit of good will they have built up the last few years would be gone. Fingers crossed we get in.

The only scary thing left at this point is an administration that would scoff at a SBC invite and doom us to the de-facto D-2 forever. Lines of communications need to open NOW. There is no reason not to join the belt if GaSo comes along. The travel wouldn't be too bad, we'd have a rival and we'd finally get the coveted 'B' in out subdivision acronym. It's last call at the bar. You're either bringing the fat chick home or you're stuck with the ol' right hand.

Let's not get bent out of shape about UNCC getting a CUSA spot. It is 100% media market that got them there. It's not like they have out performed us in any way and it's not like we would have a CUSA invite if they'd never started football. Let's act like the people of Charlotte and remain indifferent to that glorified community college in Harrisburg. Our destiny is more important.

If the Sun Belt is all we can get I still say we should move up. We can move up, and slay the competition in the Sun Belt for a few years and then eventually move on to a bigger conference.

We may have to take the longer route to get to where we wan to be but at least we are moving in right direction even if it is only the Sun Belt.

    GO 'NEERS!

Who says we're having a "sit back, wait and see attitude…besides the idiot above? We've done all the due diligence we can do. At this point, we have to wait for a conference invite. Do you have proof that our administration has not reached out to CUSA or the SunBelt? I don't have proof that they HAVE, but I think it's a safe assumption that all "mid-major" conferences out there have been contacted.

Instead of blaming our administration, how about come to the realization that CUSA doesn't want ASU.

Sounds like we're the ECU of FCS.

No need to resort to petty name calling. I’m just saying that it seems like the administration might not be pursuing the Sun Belt very hard. Maybe they are, but all I can do is assume based on the info I have. They will not give us any kind of update, have not given any indication that they are talking to conferences. When the feasibility decision was announce, Cobb made it sound like we are going to be picky and not make a move unless it is absolutely perfect for us. He also took thinly veiled shots at the idea of joining a conference like Sunbelt. That is not going to work.

I don’t know where you get the idea that we are talking about CUSA, but I agree that is not going to happen. We either get in the Sun Belt now, or we are stuck waiting for another invite years down the road, or waiting for a miracle FCS to FBS conference formation. I think about the Sun Belt now the same way I thought about CUSA 3 years ago. At this point, I’d be overjoyed with a Sun Belt invite. WKU/MTSU/Georgia State/Troy would make good regional rivals. If UNCC and/or Georgia Southern also joined, it would be even better.

Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, but I don’t think the administration can just magically get us in to CUSA. To the contrary, I think we should be pushing as hard as possible for whatever FBS league might have us. If the administration does everything humanly possible and the Sun Belt says no? Ok, they tried. If they look down on the Sun Belt or don’t actively push for an invite, and then Georgia Southern leaves us in the SoCon because of it? That is a different matter and that is something and most App fans would have a hard time living with.

And now UNCC/ODU gone to CUSA.

This is it. Two spots left in Sun Belt, only schools that make sense geographically are us and Georgia Southern. We either get one of those spots or we make peace with playing the Westerns and Elons and Samfords for the next decade.

    May 1, 2012 at 12:04 pm

Wow. Piss poor leadership all the way around. This is very disappointing. Down right disgraceful and embarrassing that we let these community colleges surpass us.

    May 1, 2012 at 12:04 pm

We need to get the rights to the WAC and start our own league with CAA Teams and Georgia Southern. Only have 7 teams and play 3 out of conference games. App, Georgia Southern, JMU, ODU, RICHMOND, William & Mary, Delaware. If we got the rights to the WAC. We could invite ourselves to the FBS.

Some of you are talking about closing the deal. One of my favorite saying is if you don't have the right circumstances, Go out and CREATE the right circumstances. DON"T WAIT ON LUCK and SCREW ANYONE CONTROLLING YOUR DESTINY.

I won't say the administration has f***ed up until they screw up our SBC contention. We had no chance for CUSA with the current conference movement/media market in Boone, NC. We must go Sunbelt and we must go ASAP. If Cobb screws that up with some sort of arrogant disposition, we should grab our torches/pitch forks and lynch him.

    May 1, 2012 at 12:20 pm

I wonder what JMU is thinking right now? I think they must be headed for the MAC. What a disaster for us.

Ashamed is an understatement. Should have sold when our stock was high, like I said three years ago.

Shut up man. As always, you have no clue what you're talking about.

If UNCC had never started football, we still would never have gotten a CUSA invite. The current trend is MEDIA MARKET LOCATION.

As I've been eluding to for over a month, we will be going Sunbelt with GaSo. Unless of course, Cobb thinks we're too good for the conference. If that happens, the world will explode and all things you know and love will cease to exist.

It is not about wins and loses, it is about TV. Do you really think we are going to have some kind of baby boom and become a major market? Just askin.

    May 1, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Just because Boone is a small market does not mean that App is a small school or that we have a small fan base. It simply means we are spread out, which is a challenge…I get it.

I just feel like we were all sold a bill of goods. People opened their wallets to support the FBS move and we're all getting pissed on. Take the money and run. Well, my wallet is f-ing closed until I see some leadership.

It is one thing to be disappointed, it is absurd to be irrational. Some folks act like all we had to do was knock on a door and we would get in CUSA. Folks who have no clue what our administration has been doing making foolish statements about the lack of vision. It has nothing to do with a "little ole ASU" attitude. I don't know what bill of goods that is. I am not arguing. I just don't remember being told that my contributions were for going fbs. I was told we are studying it, and I was told we wanted to go that way after the study was completed. I just don't remember that I was told my contribution was for going fbs. In fact with the amount of donations we bring in it is a miracle that we can keep our program going. Donations are not going to get us to fbs. Only TV money will get us to fbs. I understand your frustration but I don’t get the tie in between donations and making the move.

I will give you one fact though. There have been MANY conversations with fbs conferences. The problem to this point is that we don’t show value.

Straight from a TV VP to my ears “I can’t make any money putting you guys on the air, I love you guys but we are not a charity”. Now this was an accidental meeting in a barber shop but I checked the guy out afterward and he was who I was told he was. We don’t have a leadership problem or a donor problem, we have a TV problem. It is just that plain and simple. We may get into a low level conference and get on TV 2-3 times a year but a move up is going to take convincing the TV people that we will draw larger markets than we are in. they can make more money doing infomercials than putting us on right now. It is all about money. It is ONLY about money. Why do you think we are going back to Michigan? Because we think it is going to be another great game? No! It is because the whole world is going to tune in to see just how pissed Michigan really is, and that my friends, will produce big time money for TV. That means big money for us. Good for our reputation? I don't think so. Good for the bottom line? OOOOH YES

  42. ASpenSox

    May 1, 2012 at 2:48 pm

If we want to be upset with the latest developments we should be upset with Peacock and Cobb for their inability to sell the University to potential conferences. I agree media market is a contributing factor; however, it is not the only factor. If you don't believe that I have two words for you "Texas State." I live 10 minutes from the Texas State campus and San Marcos is sandwiched in between Austin (UT) and San Antonio (newly added UTSA football program). The University of Texas dominates this area and the state in terms of media market. Texas State has no media market or footprint in this area. No one wants to see Texas State on TV when you have the University of Texas at Austin down the road. Yet their administration pushed and got them into a FBS conference. Hate to say it but it's in Peacock's and Cobb's court now.

  43. hapapp

    May 1, 2012 at 2:53 pm

With North Texas leaving for CUSA, the Sun Belt likely wanted to maintain its presence in Texas. Without knowing what our administration has been doing, I think unfair to reflexively blame Cobb and Peacock. I do believe they could have been more forthcoming with updates as to what was happening. However, I not ready to point any fingers.

I completely DISagree hapapp….For several years now we have had hopes raised, funds requested, promises given to recruits, a rendering of an FBS stadium on the West Side portico…then the ball was apparently fumbled….Someone-(people) did not possess the creativity to overcome obstacles. 45. ASpenSox

    May 1, 2012 at 3:04 pm

I tend to disagree. I do put the blame on the Peacock and Cobb. I hate to use Texas State as an example again; however, well before they received an invite to the WAC there was a huge initiative started by their administration called "The drive" or the drive to FBS to help build a case to FBS conferences that they belonged. Trust me, this was very public and everyone in this area new what the intentions of their administration was. Now you have to ask what has our administration done after announcing the findings of the feasibility study? Well we don't know if anything has been done and it surely hasn't been public.

I am a Charlotte fan who is honestly not happy that you all aren't moving up with us, as their are lots of App grads in my family. I do have a question, because I honestly don't know. With all this expansion going on at Kidd Brewer, is that now a disaster? I just feel it makes App even less TV marketable. Anybody that wants to will be able to go to a game, and not watch it on TV. Also, I see many people here, and at the delphi site speaking of "jumping ship." If less people want to see your games in a stadium with more seats, isn't that a disaster?

  47. Murray

The idea of going FBS is all hype to keep everyone excited and donating. It has worked to a certain degree except the economy put a dent in the master plan. Now App is strapped with serious debt, an idiot for a Chancellor who only wants to hear good news and run from the bad, and Charlie Cobb who is the great spender of student fees and ruining Appalachian.

    May 1, 2012 at 5:16 pm

One does have to ask the following questions:

*Did poor team discipline (by Jerry Moore) led to off the field incidents that could have been a distraction for Peacock and Cobb?

*Was Cobb more concerned with finding himself a better gig than making a CUSA deal happen?

*Why can't these guys communicate? They act like they own App State and are not accountable to people who support App and the athletic programs.

*I wonder how Satterfield is feeling right now? Frankly, he is the only shining star in a rather dim galaxy.

Unless something big happens soon, there will be hell to pay for misleading fans and donors. Preacher above is correct.

    May 1, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Hey Midwest, I remember when you said that we shouldn't go to the Sun Belt.

That it was C-USA or nothing. Looks as if you got your wish.

I still think it's mostly about our lack of a media outlet and a TV audience. I'm not sure the administrators have anything to do with that. Been kind of a rough year–budget cutbacks, football scandals, 3 yards against Maine, bad publicity over sociology profs, and now no FBS invitation, not even to the Sunbelt. Go watch the baseball team.

    May 1, 2012 at 5:35 pm

I did say that, but our stock was high then. Now, we're pretty much a penny stock and no one wants us. Every school is dealing with the same budge cutbacks, scandals, etc.

Let's stop making excuses. The reality is that our "leaders" couldn't get it done. Now, are they planning to return all of those donations that were intended to help us move up?

We never had a vision and that was the problem as I said years ago. UTSA had one. Charlotte had one. North Texas had one.

Maybe a deal is in the works with the MAC. Who knows, but people are seriously pissed right now.

It's been a couple years since I have posted because I am more of a reader now. I always said that UNCC would lead to the destruction of the vision. I'm a Mountaineer until I die, but this is very disappointing because I am from Charlotte and I know that the city is burning for a collegiate football team to call their own. There are tons and tons of UNCC grads in the area. Commuter school or not, there atmosphere will surpass every other UNC school within 10 years. Charlotte is happening and they will be very good. I just hope the Appalachian Family doesn't lose its zest because of it.

    Go Apps!

YES! How dare Charlie Cobb and Chancellor Peacock use all that information (that took months to gather and that none of us have), make a plan, and stick to it. What an ineffective leader. Grow up people. No FCS school has the pull to tell an FBS conference what to do or who to invite, so all this "make it happen" talk is ridiculous. If CSU or Sunbelt wants us and ONLY if THEY want US, they'll invite us.

  81. ceez

    May 2, 2012 at 2:37 am

The same people who are upset now were the same ones that penciled ASU into various conferences once the feasibility results were announced. Now you're scrambling to find some type of rationalization such as "There is still an open spot in the Sunbelt," "We could join the MAC" (this is a new one to me) and my all time favorite "We are probably going to start our own conference with other FCS teams." Just what the NCAA has dreamed of, another irrelevant conference comprised of FCS schools who were not INVITED. As Nay and others including myself pointed out way back, you can not go anywhere without an invite. We were accused of being socialist with no vision, who were stuck in the past. In actuality we are realist while others were dreaming of the various trips they would be taking to C-USA venues, and how they could brag to their friends about their trip to the "This is on ESPN2 with less viewers than PBS bowl game". Don't blame Charlie or Ken for not joining a conference, there is a reason they've been quiet. We have no invite. When we move, because I don't doubt it ever occurring everyone will know. Until then enjoy what we have, or pull your donation and not attend any games. That just gives true fans an extra ticket and place to tailgate.

    Who's your daddy,

I live in Charlotte, grew up in Harrisburg and went to App. So it's safe to say I spent a lot of time on both campuses. Additionally, unlike many App people, I have no ill will for Charlotte and will probably attend quite a few games on weekends App is away or on bye. That being said, there is no comparison between Charlotte and App in terms of campus life or atmosphere, because App blows them out of the water. Plain and simple.

I'll give Charlotte credit though, that school has DRASTICALLY improved in the last 5-10 years. Anyone on here who calls Charlotte a community college, satellite campus, ect. has not seen that place within the last decade. Honestly, the growth is unbelievable and they deserve better, especially from "too high and mighty" App people on here. I wish UNCC the best. Go Apps.

What a travesty… If there was ever any doubt in our minds that college football was not about intercollegiate competition and promoting a more well rounded college experience that was just put to rest. College football is officially, in my eyes, the free minor leagues to the NFL thanks to the our whorish universities and the ncaa's failure to follow what they were organized to be (see their mission statement, below). I can only hope at this point that the US legislature steps in and regulates, this has clearly become an issue of interstate commerce which is monopolized by those few in power.

    NCAA Mission Statement-

"Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount."

I happen to think he knows exactly what he is doing, and I sure don’t think he is an idiot. I also think he is just a little more informed than we are so let’s see what happens. Remember he was in that conference and left.

Looking at it geographically, I'd be excited about joining the Sunbelt. We'd have solid regional rivalries (beyond GSU) with Troy, MTSU and WKU.

To all UNCC fans trolling on this board,

Show the maturity and class that an institution like UNCC would want from you.

    As has been mentioned before,

    A. UNCC is blessed with geographical proximity to a large TV market;

    B. Your football program has played exactly ZERO downs of college football at any level.

Why are you talking smack? The UNCC football 49ers have yet to accomplish anything on the field, much less helping the university gain an C-USA invite. Your school happens to be in a large TV market and in this day and age, all schools worship at the altar of the TV gods. UNCC didn't do anything to deserve this, that's just the world we live in and I can accept that.

With that being said, keep in mind that there will be a tremendous amount of pressure on UNCC to perform at a high level right out of the gate. Conference USA wants successful sports programs in high-profile markets and it will be interesting to see how the 49ers stack up. Also, now you'll be competing against the big boys like UNC, NCSU, ECU &Wake Forest for love and attention. UNCC has a lot to prove and you'll have to do it quickly. Save the smack talk until some football has been played in the coming years and UNCC has experienced success.

App State has three National Championships, numerous Southern Conference Championships, higher home game attendance than over 50% of schools currently at the FBS level, not to mention possession of many other accolades and accomplishments. They just happen to live in a small TV market and thus don't receive the love/attention that schools in big cities do. Regardless of where ASU ends up, they don't have to prove anything to anyone because they have the hardware to show for it.

Can't we all just act like adults? Once UNCC has some numbers on paper (specifically in the win-loss columns) come back to the table and we can discuss this. Crowing about going to the FBS before another NC school just because UNCC happens to be in a large metropolitan area is silly.

I would disagree with the comparison of Charlotte to a rich kid handed his father's business. We do have advantages in location and a large metro area, but we've also worked very hard to put the program on the map.

Starting a program from scratch is a lot more difficult than having a few winning seasons. We spent YEARS promoting the idea of a team with other alumni, co-workers, students, friends, etc. We held forums, made shirts, made posters, passed out flyers, emailed the chancellor and AD. We had rallies and even carried a goalpost through the middle of campus to get our point across. We got up at 4AM to promote the idea with early morning news programs. We had to win over the hearts of minds of city leaders which included the most influential CEOs and Philanthropists. Our efforts made our university officials work harder because they didn't want to be the ones to destroy what we had created.

The bottom line is we busted our ass to make it happen, which takes a lot more guts and hard work than showing up on Saturday and watching your team win. Ask an events coordinator what is more difficult, the months of planning for an event or showing up as a guest. We may have had the market in our favor, but we worked damn hard to be successful. So don't act like we don't deserve our success.

  124. MIDWEST

let it go…that’s the problem with the mentality at the top. Hell no, I’m not letting it go. We have to fight for App State’s position as one of the best academic and athletic schools (our size) around.

We should be kissing the MAC’s ass right now. Could Satterfield’s Toledo connection actually save us? The MAC is a MUCH better conf than the Sunbelch.

Consider this: Northern Illinois (MAC) is playing Iowa in Chicago at Soldier field. That would be like us playing Tennessee or Auburn at the Georgia Dome.

Satterfield= only shining star in a very DIM galaxy.

We don't discount your hard work Ckroush. You should feel very happy about this. However, had your efforts happened in a smaller, lesser known area – would you have had as much success? This is where our frustration stems from. We've been working very hard for a long time and we have had a great football team and fans for a very long time.

  127. ASUGoose

Well if they change the BCS championship rules it might not make a difference which conference we are in as long as it is FBS. Their is talk that with a proposed 4 team playoff that they will not be able to limit the traditional BCS bowl games to only BCS conferences. The BCS rankings would allow for non-BCS conferences to be eligible for those premier bowl games.

Boise, ID is not a mecca of a media market…. How did they move up? They built up the program once in FBS and got to the point where they could take on and beat ACC and SEC teams on national tv. They built fan fare outside of their typical viewing areas. We can do the same by proving we belong on the field.

Like I said previously, at this point I don't care where we end up as long at it is FBS because FCS will be irrelevant after 2014.

  130. carbine

I dont' get this stuff about FCS being "irrelevant." What does that mean? If that's the division we're in, than that's the division most relevant to us. Who cares if it's relevant to anyone else? And more importantly, why should WE care if it's relevant to anyone else?

We've got one of the best stadiums in FCS football, and one of the best legacies in FCS football. We've had many exciting games and seasons in FCS football, and I don't recall there ever being a single Saturday during the football season when I said to myself, "I'd better not watch this ASU football game or listen to it on the radio; it may not be relevant to someone, somewhere." I've never once thought to myself, "It's time to buy my tickets to another season of trailer park (or JV) football."

I know some of you think that only FBS football is worth the effort, but in my view that's just a terrible attitude. By that reasoning most FBS programs ought to just quit playing football altogether because they have no reasonable chance of ever competing for a championship. I will not be sad to see ASU continue to dominate the FCS level of college football year after year, while schools like UNCC go on to become homecoming fodder for real FBS outfits like Alabama and Ohio State. We've already got more wins over FBS schools than they will have for many years yet to come. So, why exactly do we care what they do now?

  131. Greg

    May 2, 2012 at 2:12 pm

I grew up in hickory, live in greenville sc now and can't remember more that once or twice growing up seeing any C-USA games televised. Yeah CUSA is the biggest name being thrown around but as far as TV is concerned it's still a marginal conference.

Cobb said from day one we would ONLY make a move IF it made sense for ALL ASU athletics not just football. Those of you who are bitching about the system being broken are taking a very hypocritical stance. Are you prepared to pay $50 per ticket to cover the cost of sending the women's volleyball team to Texas or Michigan on a weeknight?

if we do get a Sunbelt invite don't expect to "move up" in a few years. Just ask ECU: they've been fighting the "small-market school" battle for YEARS and still can't get ahead.

Oh yeah, and they average 40,000+ in attendance for home games and have done so for many seasons.

I see that division one is set to undergo some changes, but I don't think that means we have to move now in anticipation of those changes. Why not wait to see exactly what it is we're about to jump into? If FBS splits into a 'real' subdivision and a 'IAAF' type subdivision, then would be the time to make the move to the new IAA. Of course that would not satisfy the crowd who believes we should only settle for the highest division in the land, but they will never be pleased no matter what anyway.
