Braves take Apps back-to-back

Tomahawk chopCool – “The Atlanta Braves used back-to-back picks to select App State RP Nathan Hyatt and C/RF Tyler Tewell in the 13th and 14th rounds of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday. Hyatt, the 419th overall selection, is App’s highest draft pick since three Mountaineers were selected within a 44-pick span over the 11th and 12th rounds in 2008.”

TWO MORE. On the second day – “The Miami Marlins took Seth Grant in the 26th round. Ryan Arrowood was taken in the 28th round by the Colorado Rockies.”

Getting drafted high is Not a guarantee.

  • ASU3432

    What about Arrowood?

  • biggie

Arrowood went in 28th round. Rockies

Grant in 26th round to Marlins

Have looked for any others yet.

The Braves also picked Western's Ross Heffley who, despite being a Catamount, I have absolutely freakin' loved watching over the last four years. He lacks a great defensive profile but the dude is about as pure a hitter as can be.

  • Happy for them personally and because the Braves are my team but I'd hate to lose them. Hopefully they will come back for one more year but if they are offered good $$ by a solid organization like Atlanta, can't say I'd blame them for taking it.

  • Most of them can't (they are seniors). Hats off to them, they deserve a chance at the big leagues. They have a lot of hard work left in front of them to make it to playing in the majors.

  • Is it just me or has ASU seen a massive surge in the success of its sports programs over the the past 5 years?

Look at football, wrestling, baseball, track & field, soccer, (and any other ones I missed)… those programs are absolutely exploding with talent.

I'm so proud to be a Mountaineer.

  • ASU Lacrosse 18

Law, Tewell and Hyatt are juniors.

  • 3-Star

    Thanks Law, 14th @ NCAA's is amazing.

  • Absolutely. Conference realignment gets so much focus that some of us (myself included at times) allow it so suck the joy out of Appalachian athletics. We have a lot to be proud of, regardless of what our conference affiliation is or will be.

Our baseball program has a very bright future, so proud of our guys. Hope Nate and Tyler come back for another run in 2013!

  • Ah didn't realize there were two juniors. I hope they come back for another year and finish out college.

Question for those of you who are more hard core and more knowledgeable baseball fans of both college and pro game/teams, and who follow App's team more closely than a very occasional fan such as myself: Wasn't Arrowood more highly regarded than Hyatt? If I'm not incorrect in that impression, why would Hyatt be drafted so much earlier than Arrowood?

  • Really it boils down to two things: Hyatt has the ability to throw high 90's and therefore is seen as having a higher ceiling. They look at potential as much or more than performance.

Also, being a senior hurt Ryan as well. The pro teams will go after the high school and underclassmen talent first so they can offer a big signing bonus to persuade them from signing with a school or returning for their senior year. Once you've graduated, you have no option but to sign and no leverage so the team does not feel the need to give you a high draft pick and a sizable bonus. Unless you are a very high, early round pick a senior will typically fall a good ways down.

  • appdreamin

All that makes sense, especially the business aspects. Thanks!

  • Matt

ASU-LAW, (M) and (W) soccer have not had the success in a long time. Field Hockey is out place and probably needs to be replaced with LAX. (M) and (W) Tennis are the same. (M) and (W) golf are ok.

  • Matt

Take a look at last seasons success (even when the head coach suddenly and tragically died). Let me save you the trip, they went 10 – 5 – 4 last year in soccer. That is a darn good season.

Lets not be a debbie downer, not EVERY sport is doing well, but in totally our sports programs are on the rise.

  • Matt

    (M) soccer schedule last year was not a strong schedule except for playing in the SoCon. After this upcoming season, the program will start to slide with a young new coach, playing off campus and not being fully funded.

    (W) soccer has only had one winning season in 17 years.

  • bcoach

Gee matt, are we having a bad day? or are you just always…..well you know.

  • Matt

    Just setting the record straight.

BTW,(M) soccer came in fourth in the SoCon in regular season.

    (W) soccer came in 11th place in the SoCon

  • They tied for third place and had an overall .632 win percentage.

We are talking about one sport Matt. Look at ASU sports in totality.

  • It's not like our Men's Soccer team had any adversity to overcome this year or anything… those young men should be applauded for their performance.

Yes, we are not dominant at every sport we field but overall, Appalachian athletics are very strong and moving in the right direction.

  • bcoach

    Matt

It is very obvious that you have an ax to grind. Did you get cut or maybe never got an offer? What is your strong motive for "setting the record straight?"

  • Matt

Got to love you "axe to grid" statement people. It is what it is. As far as adversity, what did they over come? How is death of a coach adverse?

Not to take anything away from the (M) soccer team but fourth place is not good considering where the program use to be. The (W) soccer program has more issues when reviewing 17 years.

Hope we go to Sunbelt so we rid App of soccer, field hockey and wrestling. If App won't put the money into the programs, let's move on

  • A.freeman

    Nice! Right in my backyard.

  • Apps_Aj11

The only reason field hockey exists is to balance out scholarships due to the moronic Title IX requirement.

  • Murray

WTH, get rid of women's soccer. One winning season in 17 years is enough for any sport to be on the chopping block.

Cobb's wife is the cancer of coaching the women. She is one f-ugly person

  • As far as adversity, what did they over come? How is death of a coach adverse?

You must be unclear on the definition of adversity.

  • "How is death of a coach adverse?"

"Cobb’s wife is the cancer of coaching the women. She is one f-ugly person"

I can't believe I went to the same school as some of these idiots.

  • I can't believe I spent time to post this but for morons i apparently have to spell it out very clearly. For those programs whos success is quantifiable by wins and losses (so excluding things like track/field/golf) here are the standings:

    Volleyball Overall: 21 – 11 SoCon: 12 – 4

    Basketball-W Overall: 27 – 7 SoCon: 17 – 3

    Wrestling Overall: 13 – 4 SoCon: 6 – 0

    Tennis – M Overall: 15 – 7 – 1 SoCon: 7 – 2 – 1

    Tennis – W Overall: 13 – 12 SoCon: 5 – 5

    Soccer – M Overall: 10 – 5 – 4 SoCon: 3 – 2 – 2

Football Overall: 8-4 (lets not forget our 3 national titles in the past 5 years and what was that 7 socon titles in a row?)

    Baseball Overall: 41-16

  • Jamey

"How is death of a coach adverse?"

WOW. I sincerely hope that was not a serious question. Sarcasm runs wild on this site, and I hope this was one of those times where we severely need a "sarcasm font." Otherwise, I recommend that you be removed from the reproductive gene pool.

AS FOR THE TOPIC OF SURGING ASU ATHLETICS – I think the improvement in exposure and facilities is attracting higher quality athletes and coaches. The increased athletic exposure and academic exposure (ex. the gree house project last year) has led recruits to Boone and the teams have benefited.

  • appstategrad2008

    asumike83,

I might be wrong, mike, but I believe adversity was an old, old wooden ship… used in the civil war era. ;-)

  • To get back on subject, both guys have signed and will not be returning to school as athletes; i believe both will be back to finish their degrees though

no word on their assignments yet as to where they will go that has been made official

  • That is great for them, they deserve it. Hopefully Kassouf can get a shot and catch on somewhere as well.

That hurts us but I believe we will still have a strong line-up. Performance of the young starting pitchers will be the key to 2013. I'm assuming Frankoff will be a leading candidate to take over closing duties from Hyatt? He sure seemed up to the task based on the job he did this year but it will be interesting.

  • Lewis

I had some thought about the soccer discussion in this thread.

Our men's soccer team over came a "tragedy" of a coach taking his own life. Over coming adversity would be a situation if there was an injury plagued season for our team to have over come.

While some of you may disagree. It is best to celebrate the life of the faithfully departed. End of story.

  • bcoach

YUP tried to walk on and got cut

  • Lewis

Hi bcoach, i think you are referring to Matt.

  • bcoach

    Good thought

  • AppMan

The SmallCon sends the soccer tournament to a NC city with a huge ACC presence and about as far away from the member schools as you can get, but won't move the baseball tournament to the state with the most conference teams. That there's some sound logic Mr Imamoron. BTW, last time the baseball tournament was held in NC was 1989.

  • Lewis

Appman, the SoCon tournament venues are voted on by the athletic directors from the SoCon. I would love to see the SoCon baseball tournament played in Winston-Salem here at the Dash stadium in the future.

Soccer has a huge prescence in Norh Carolina. To play on the biggest stage at Wake Med Soccer stadium will hopefully allow further exposure to all schools in the SoCon in the back yard of the ACC big three. App just needs to correct the mistake of playing soccer off campus and on turf.

  • AppMan

I understand, but the AD's must have a ballpark to vote on. I have a good idea the Commish isn't putting forth his best effort to research the possibility of playing in NC. The people at The Citadel and C of C moaned and complained like they had been robbed when the thing was moved to Greenville for a couple of years. I can only imagine how they would react if it came to NC for several. Of course the SmallCon, in their infinite wisdom, gives the host teams the best game times regardless of their seeding. It was a pleasure to see those folks actually have to play games other than late afternoon or early evening for a change. As far as soccer goes, I admit not knowing what is or isn't a great site, but it seems the site chosen would be one accessible to SC soccer fans and not simply one that caters to a soccer fans in general. As for playing on grass the previous facility was a grass field – albeit very difficult to get to – and honestly I don;t know if there is enough flat land on campus for a soccer pitch. If there is we need to build a track around it!

    Some news on conference realignment

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1207609-why-fl

Interesting (speculative) read on conference realignment

  • MIDWEST

Still no vision and, no communication, and no plan.

    Dumb.

  • Joe

    Middie,

They are clearly communicating with you since you seem to know EXACTLY what is going on behind the scenes..

I guarantee you there is a vision and a plan.. it's just not up to par with what you want so you will continue to hate on the administration.

Fortunately for the rest of the population, the world doesn't revolve around you.

  • If the Charlotte Knights get their stadium built here in downtown Charlotte, I would love to see it host the SoCon baseball tournament. If it ends up looking anything like the renderings, it will be a great facility.

  • rick

when are we going ot get some information on our pending FBS conference???

  • MIDWEST

The admin is bush league, plain and simple.

Donations are drying up as we speak. They will blame it on the economy, but it is their stupidity that will be the core of the problem.

  • Monster Appfan

In other news App announces the largest single contribution in the schools history…. 7 million dollars from one family. Midwest is on fire!

  • A.Freeman

    Tim +1 Reese +1

  • MIDWEST

This attitude is part of the problem. Some of you settle for the status quo. We must demand great things out of our "leaders"!!

By the way, how is the law school and the new doctoral programs coming along?

    No clue. Dumb.

  • neato

    GO APPSTATE SPORTS!!!!

  • appdreamin

    Appfan censors strike again!

  • MIDWEST

All I can say is that these clowns would be fired in the private sector. F-ing stupidity.

  • Reese

I'm glad that crap got taken down. Good riddance, some people make it hard to see the good in others.
