The season starts at high noon

LetSet – “FOX Sports Networks will air three of the home contests, including the season opener against Appalachian State at 12:00 p.m. on Sept. 1. FSN.” Which means, bring some sun screen. That afternoon light can be brutal. Now, what time to get the grill going ……. Oh, and coincidentally, happy five years!

SS is scheming in between tweets from Myrtle Beach.

  • Damn. Looks like I'll be cracking a beer at 6am again.

  • Gwaltineer

After attending the game in 2009, I fully support this decision. ECU should not be allowed to start after about 10:30 actually.

  • nomadb

I just lit the grill and cracked my first beer.

  • AppMan

    I hate TV!

  • ASU Lacrosse 18

Armanti looked really good at the Panthers open practice today. His biggest highlight was a one on one grab where Cam led him and Armanti adjusted and caught the ball over the corner. He then threw the ball to a fan.

  • MIDWEST

We need to send a message at the ECU game. The team will be prepared and we need to make sure our fans are prepared. Let's bring as many loud and screaming App fans to this game as possible!!!!

  • sixtoes9134

I love some DP, but he was not ready for that ECU game when AE was hurt in '09. Not sure how/why Cadet made such a huge impact in that particular game, I think we were just better conditioned and ECU was worn out and Cadet was a benefactor of that.

That said, I believe that Jamal will be an effective weapon against ECU.

Also, I believe the new coaching staff has been effective at winning the locker room back – and that my friends will translate into success this year.

  • MIDWEST

I'm glad the 1-800-Satterfield call was answered. I do give the admin a lot of credit for making that happen!

  • GRIZZZLY

How about the ultimate match up vs "The Griz" ? Any TV time?

  • hog

Noon at ECU I'm ok with. Just gonna be hot as hell, but those ECU fans will be rowdy no matter what time.

Would love some details about Montana, assuming no TV i sure we'll go with the usual 3:30. I would love a little 6:00 pm, second half under the lights though.

  • Jack

Something tells me this game will be more similar to VT last year than ECU '09. We're not as good as we were in '09.

  • Appstate2336

Jack, I think you are wrong.

ECU won CUSA and had Skip Holtz in 09. We didn't have SS or Armanti and it was still close. Since 09 our level of play has dropped but it hasn't taken a nose dive like ECU. Our coaching staff is better now then in 09 (just with the addition of SS) and there coaching staff is much, much worse without Skip.

  • ASU 09

My boss is a huge ECU alumni contributor and we were discussing the upcoming game. He says they are gonna be stacked on defense. They had an end and tackle that were out last year due to injuries and are going to be wild this year. The QB position still is not decided as they have 3-4 fighting it out for the job….most of them with very little snaps. They also have a 6'7'' wide receiver…who they hit up quite often in the red zone. It shall be interesting.

  • MIDWEST

what would you expect him to say?? Fear the Neer.

  • AB

ECU's D better than last year? That shouldn't be difficult they gave up over 400 yards a game.

  • MIDWEST

We have Satterfield back, so expect some creative surprises. Can't wait to see what's in store.

ECU’s D better than last year? That shouldn’t be difficult they gave up over 400 yards a game.

That is a fact! Besides…. they have John Wyley on their defensive staff. Believe me we have no worries in this game about putting up points.

If we can stop them on one drive we win!

  • MIDWEST

    82,

Great point. If we can't score some points on a Wiley defense, something is wrong. I'll put my money on Satterfield any day of the week!

    Happy Father's Day, guys!

  • ceez

Wiley had some pretty good defenses while at ASU.

  • sixtoes9134

I'm really glad SS is back, but let's not make him out to be someone or something that is going to magically turn us into what we had from 05-08. We had some amazing talent on those teams + really good coaching.

I feel like our new coaches, based on everything I've seen and read thus far have gotten the players respect, which has been conspicuously absent for a couple years.

That said, I hope I am unable to predict what play is going to be run by our offense this year.

If anything, Wiley will certainly know how to prepare for a SS offense.

And no, this will not be a game like VT last year.

  • bcoach

    ceez

    don't confuse him with facts.

  • MIDWEST

True, but his defensive schemes were pretty weak towards the end, in my opinion.

  • 3-Star

So, will we actually be able to see the first quarter on TV this time?

  • Jamey

Any word on whether we have any receivers left to catch the football? Do we have any offensive weapons at all left? Quick, Cline, Cadet…etc are all gone. Where will the offensive firepower come from when we need to big score to step up?

I am throwing this question out to those who may have more info on what our depth chart/options look like coming into this season. I just do not feel like we have a lot of returning weapons on the offensive side of the ball.

  • Peacock and Washington Jamey. The list stops there. I assume Malachi Jones won't get red shirted for this reason.

We'll be alright if Jones and another receiver step up (maybe Price after the first two games he'll miss). What we're really lacking is a TE that can catch the ball.

  • sixtoes9134

I am really hoping Beathard can be another Cline type guy.

  • Washington and Peacock will both be solid. Each run good routes, have dependable hands and good speed. The question will be whether one of the young guys can step up to be the big-play receiver. I think Sean Price can do it but he is unproven. Malachi Jones and Chris Starks will be fighting for playing time as freshmen too. Starks could also contribute in the return game.

Losing Trevor Sawyer was a bit hit, he could have been the red zone threat we needed. We will once again turn to a freshman in Barrett Burns to step up. He's got ability in the pass game but it's yet to be seen how he adjusts to the speed of the college game.

The big key, as always, will be how our running game improves. If we are moving the ball on the ground, we'll be just fine. If not and the defenses can sit back and play the pass, it will be a frustrating offense to watch. A lot of question marks but with what I've heard about the progress of the offensive line and running backs, I am cautiously optimistic.

  • JMcCray

Definitely excited for the upcoming season! I need football! But, then again, I may need tv if there is no internet feed.

  • Giv'em Hell App

While there are a lot of question marks about our program that are out of our (the fans) control, there is one thing we Do Control……the Noise Level we bring to the game. Does anyone know who the other C-USA schools are playing on 8/1? Is ther any chance the C-USA commissioner will be in Greenville for App/ECU? If so, we need to make sure we show him what he has passed on, in terms of atmosphere and game day experience. I want him to thinking about that ASU crowd when he is in the "stadium" at UNCC and it's 12 – 14 thousand fans. It is a moral imperative that We Bring The Noise!!!!

  • No question we will bring the noise. ECU knows it too, that is why they scheduled us. I spoke to an ECU fan on another board who told me that they are charging more for tickets to the Appalachian game than any conference home game this season.

  • App Band

High noon, huh? Brutal heat! So, I think that we should return this little "favor" and schedule them next season to come up here when it's white-out blizzard conditions and minus-degree wind chill factor!

  • MIDWEST

This is a statement game. The team and fans need to be ready to bring it…and bring it hard!!

  • mark

Tickets bought.. Hotel room booked. Heading out the last day of August at 10am!

    Appnation will bring it strong!

  • Yogi86

Anybody know what happened to Khalik Barnes?

  • mtd Security

As of now Khalik Barnes is still on the roster on goasu.com. Morgan & Sawyer are not. I am thinking me may have switched positions.

  • appthunder90

as stated previously kalik will not be playing. can't say any more than that. no position change.

  • 73Catamount

    My son(ASU 2007)and I were there in 2009.

Great time, plenty of ASU fans, decent ECU fans, outstanding atmosphere! Much of the town was really caught up in the game–not much different from Boone in many ways.

One word of caution particularly if you are taking your kids or grandkids—hydrate before the game! High noon in the coastal plain on metal seats in early September can be brutal.

As is the case at most stadiums, no outside water or beverages allowed–even though on the first or second page of their program there was a warning to drink plenty of water during the game and directions to the nearest first aid station. Good advice but take plenty of money as bottled water doesn't come cheap down there.

  • Reese

Or you could just bring in an empty walter bottle/nalgene bottle and fill up with the water fountains in the stadium…

  • MIDWEST

    There is water in beer.

  • Jamey

Thanks for the info regarding potential offensive weapons this year. A lot of question marks, but my hope is that the coaching staff can find the tools they need.

NOW ON TO THE KALIK BARNES QUESTION….What is the deal? How is our backup QB who many thought could have been our starting QB not playing anymore?

  • Gwaltineer

I'll always recall a bunch of ECU students riding in the back of a pick up truck at 9, coming down the main hill and telling a 7 year old wearing an App jersey to go the F**k home. That pretty much summed up the atmosphere.

I'll also recall the realization on everyone's face at the end of the game that if we started Cadet, App would have won by 21 over the to be 2009 CUSA champs.

  • MIDWEST

We have plenty of "starred" recruits from which to pick, right? what's the big deal?

Can't wait until Satterfield is the head coach.

    Got discipline?

  • From what I understand, it was a combination of nagging little injuries and Kameron Bryant playing very well that led to him falling behind on the depth chart. Paul Magloire is a highly thought of prospect as well.

Sometimes things just don't work out. We all know Barnes is very, very fast but he has not shown anything with his arm. Hopefully, it will not make a difference in 2012-2013. Barring injury, Jamal is going to be our starter for the next two seasons.

  • The rock

I dont believe we win in 09 if Cadet started. ECU was running out of steam when cadet came in and their fatigue made him better than he was. DP should have gotten more chances to play in 08 to be prepared for that game

  • MIDWEST

Just imagine what AE would have done to ECU in 2009. Man, I wish we could have seen that one. We'd probably still be talking about it. He would have ripped their D to shreds.

    Damn lawnmower.

  • MIDWEST

This song should be part of the branding of App State. Just imagine the shots of the parkway, Boone, football game day, campus, etc. Perfect song for us.

Boulder of the East with an Ivy League Twist. Oh..and we've been know to play a little football.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se9NuVdyDpU

  • mtd Security

Still do not understand what happen to KALIK BARNES. He is not going to play anymore? So what is he not the team, he quit, he going to transfer, what is the deal?? Does not sound like there is any problem with grades or legal problems??

Byrant may be better. Paul Magloire is also rated as a high prospect.

Barnes looked pretty good when he was put in the one time last year. He never past the ball, but he was probably told not to. The backups just marched down the field by rushing and did score a touchdown.

If he can't play quarter back for us he could certainly be used as a short receiver. He is very fast as stated.

  • mtd Security

    Dr. Gonzo

We’ll be alright if Jones and another receiver step up (maybe Price after the first two games he’ll miss). What we’re really lacking is a TE that can catch the ball.

What is up with Sean Price. "maybe Price after the first two games he'll miss".

Are you saying that for some reason Price cannot play against ECU or Montana? Did he do something to get the coach mad at him?

I know he is not proven. He is supposed to be the replacement for Brian Quick. He is taller. We need him to play against ECU & Montana.

  • 73Catamount

Gwaltineer-Hate to hear that regarding the young fan being cursed at by some ECU fans. No place for that, totally uncalled for. Reminds me of the NC State game in 06.

I had heard ECU can be tough on the visiting fans and was certainly not commending them in my earlier comment–it just happened our group didn't catch any crap from anybody–maybe because most of us were a bunch of gnarly senior citizens.

  • Still do not understand what happen to KALIK BARNES. He is not going to play anymore? So what is he not the team, he quit, he going to transfer, what is the deal?? Does not sound like there is any problem with grades or legal problems??

No legal or academic problems and to my knowledge, no plans to transfer. He is on the team but the coaches just do not think he runs the offense as well as the guys in front of him.

Maybe he will make some noise in the summer sessions. He is an excellent athlete but he has never played a significant down at ASU. He had 5 rushes for 29 yards in a blowout win over Western with no pass attempts.

I trust that Coach Satterfield will have the correct pecking order at QB when the season rolls around. Until we have at least seen the kid throw a pass, it is hard to speculate.

  • Appthunder90

    Mike,

That's not what I have been hearing. I cant say exactly because i dont know how public the information is (not very by the look of it) i will comment that the issue is not athletic, academic, or legal though.

  • Interesting. Hopefully there are no serious issues with him. All I have heard is that he had a tweaked knee and did not impress SS much before that.

  • Jason

Why would anyone come on a blog and say "I know something but I'm not going to tell you"?? What good does that do? Is that suppose to make you look important and to inflate your own ego? I've never understood that.

If you know something, why not say it? If you can't say it because someone told you trusting you wouldn't say anything, why post "that's not what I'm hearing?" I seriously don't get it.

  • Festus

Since this is the most active thread, I thought I share this here… I saw that the Buzzard's B-ball team down at the beach is banned from post-season play for 2013 for not making the APR grade… Of course most, if not all of the APR score is a reflection upon his predecessor and not during his tenure.

  • Appthunder90

    Jason

Because the question has been asked repeatedly. Has nothing to do with ego. As I said, not sure how public the information is so I will not be posting it, it just isn't any of the things being mentioned here

  • sideline observer

bad sportsmanship happens everywhere including in Boone. PLENTY of people have been cussed at by our drunk students, trust me. I still get crap from my nc state friends about app fans talking smack before the game…

  • sideline observer

    Jamil Lott?

  • appmaj

NC State fans saying anything about "bad sportsmanship" is hilarious

  • asu7

Why would anyone have friends that went to moo U in the first place? ;)

  • ceez

I have to agree with sideline. Poor sportsmanship is based on each individual. Not the entire school. I have witness plenty of times, students in Raley cussing out fans from other schools.

  • bcoach

I have apologized for our fan behavior a few times. In fact we had to step in and protect an opposing fan two years ago from three drunk jerks. We are not the model of perfect fans. I’ll never forget our last game at Wake Forrest when some drunk students were throwing drinks on those of us below them. You got it. Our students again. So yes we have our share of jackasses also.

  • bcoach

One last comment on the subject. When will we ever grow up and stop the booing when the other team enters the field. that is just so gradeschool

  • ceez

When we move up and host UNC

  • ASU3432

The best 10 years of my life were in grade school.

  • nomadb

bcoach…I think booing the other team when they enter the field is in a different category than cussing out the opposing fans.

I have no problem booing the other team….would you suggest a golf clap when Southern runs into The Rock? I'm ok with a hostile environment for the opposing team…..don't think you need to have the same attitude towards the opposing fans though.

Light hearted ribbing is one thing, but cussing and screaming at them is another

  • Agreed. The visiting team always gets booed, I have no problem with that. Of course, if they have a player injured then a round of applause for the kid is in order when he gets up but otherwise, it is just the nature of sports. Honestly, I always enjoyed being booed by the home fans when my team came onto the field. I never played at this level but the idea is the same.

Being vulgar towards visiting fans is another matter all together that crosses the line from good-natured jabs at your opponent to poor taste. No fan bases are free of that type of behavior unfortunately and we are no exception.

  • Agreed. I'm totally ok with booing and a little light-hearted mutual jab-age between fans. I draw the line at shouting profanity ect.

App and GaSo get bad raps for having tons of abrasive fans, but my experience at UTC and Elon (twice now) was worse than any story I've ever heard from other fans about App or Southern.

  • bcoach

No doubt, booing is not on the same level, it is just so grade school. Silence would be cool, then when we come out all hell breaks loose. Silence would convey "who cares".

From some I see on here "IF" faded blue ever came to the rock there would be cheers!

  • No way. If the Holes came to the Rock, it would be the loudest collective boo we've heard yet. If they came to the Holmes center again however….

    SMH

  • App Band

bcoach, I like that silent treatment idea! That would truly be a unique statement.

  • ceez

    Gonzo

Student section in the Holmes Center would be packed with baby blue…As you said….SMH

  • Was anyone there in 2000 when the Holes came to the HCC?

  • JonW

I can remember getting whole sections of the student section to completely turn their backs when the other team ran in and being silent. To me, that ultimately shows who cares, then once we ran onto the field all hell did break loose.

  • asu7

I have 2 Brothers of the Sun Tour tickets at BOA Stadium this Sunday if anyone is interested. I will sell for face or best offer.

You can email me at grindstaffbw@appstate.edu

BTW I have a group of 8 going to EZU!!!!! So stoked for this game.

  • Keith

    Gonzo,

I was there. It is most likely to this date the only time the Holmes Center was full. We were beat badly..around 30. If I remember correctly there was a presentation to Rufus Leech's parents during halftime. However, I remember a lot of Black and Gold and school spirit.

  • Apps_Aj11

The Davidson game in 2008 when Steph Curry came to Boone was packed.

  • I've seen the HCC pretty packed twice. Playing Davidson when Curry was there (L) and UNCC (W). Good games. Great environment. The place was loud as hell. It really is a shame our attendance has been so low recently.

  • sideline observer

nothing wrong with boo'ing. I'm cool with that. youre supposed to. but im talking the vulgar bad sportmanship. happens pretty much everywhere, but around the socon our students are pretty rough. JMU @ App state 2006. JMU fans come out to there car with poop smeared all over it.

  • Wow thats pretty bad. Funny though!

  • Jack

If you win, they will come. End of story.

  • Watauga 72

I'm so old that they played in Varsity Gym during my years at ASU. Press Maravich was the new coach and there was a lot of excitement around the program. That did not last long. The team was terrible, so bad that they went to State and got a scoring record set against them. Now, State was really good (Towe, Burleson, Thompson, etc.) so losing was no shame…just the way we lost. Neither attendance nor spirit returned until Cremins came in and turned the program around. During his tenure the place was crowded and loud. If you put a quality team on the floor I believe students will attend and support.

  • Apps_Aj11

A lot has to be put on the Athletic Dept for not advertising the basketball team at all. We all love football but basketball gets no love in terms of advertisement and attention. Students don't know or care when there are games. Make basketball a higher priority than it is currently, put it more in the spotlight, and you'll see attendance increase. Put a good team on top of that and it will increase even more as Watauga72 points out.

  • Watauga 72

On the subject of bad fan behavior, I attended the 1st championship game in Chattanooga and was embarrassed by the actions of several ASU adult fans (not students). They paraded in front of the N. Iowa fans, taunting them as time ran down. Very poor form.

  • bcoach

I remember when Cremmins brough GT here around 95. I remember we had the BB game and a playoff game. That was in varsity gym.

    Watauga 72

Those were not adults they were just old.

  • Watauga 72

Bcoach, you're correct….they were certainly not mature.

My favorite memory of the Maravich years was his first recruiting class. Nananovich, Milosovich, Vukosovich…..a bunch of sons of Viches!

  • Festus

I was at the game when the Holes played at HCC… lots of UNC fans in attendance… I believe we opened the scoring with a 3 – then it was all downhill after that. When I was a student we played at Varsity… felt like a high school gym… best thing about it was that you could sit right on top of the opposing team's bench and give them heck…

  • Yogi86

At the Rock with my son for linebacker and DB camp. Been bringing him since 2008. First time that Speir hasn't been here. Kinda weird. Awful lot of new faces on the coaching staff. Great to be a Mountaineer!!

  • Russ

I have 10 tickets coming and will be tailgating with both Pirate Clubbers and App Fans. We may have a pig on the grill and a keg in the motorhome. Ill keep you guys posted and perhaps we can overwhelm them in pregame drinking contests so they will not feel so good in the heat yelling and screaming.
