  7. Zen

Real reasons the PBS deal didn't work out

–It didn't lose money. A HUGE no-no at PBS.

–Embarrassingly, the highest ratings for SoCon Football were in Chapel Hill.

–Jerry Moore refused to appear on the Charlie Rose show.

–Adding Purple Paladins and Purple Cats to Purple Dinos caused fictitious Purple characters to be overrepresented as a percentage.

–a 20 minute halftime simply isn't long enough for Norm to build a barrister bookcase.

–Bert and Ernie felt that the WCU football team was mocking them.

All of this "greater exposure" business that the SoCon is attempting/has attempted in various recent forms has only seved to rile up us Black and Gold true-believers all that much more. Between the most recent (almost daily) disappointing news coming from Boone; leaks and other vague statements from disparate conference commissioners and athletic directors; and now this announcement that Mr. Rogers has refused to be the color man on the (now former) weekly SoCon football game, only serves to send the message that it is time for App Nation to take a deep breath; sit down for a little while; and let our collective blood pressures return to 120/80. We can't force anyone to love us if our boobs and booty don't meet their particular lustful specs. Nevertheless, if any of you guys like to torment yourself with no satisfactory remedy in sight, go for it. Right now, I'm focusing on winning in Greenville; taking the Grizzlies out the next week; and making a serious push for NC #4 in 2012. There's still first-class room on that plane. I welcome any and all company.

    June 28, 2012 at 5:28 am

The stark reality is that no one (NCAA, ESPN, etc.) takes the FCS seriously. They treat the FCS as if it is a club sports league, intramurals, etc.

This guy pretty much sums up how I feel about App being in the FCS.

I'm psyched about a deal with ESPN3. I work in broadcasting, and the trend is everything is being pushed towards the web. ESPN3 only hosts a finite number of games on Saturday, and if we're one of them then that's awesome.

I have liked ESPN3 since it was offered as part of the Xbox Live experience. I have watched a handful of ASU games on it and a lot of SEC/B1G games on it.

That being said, it sucks to not be on an actual broadcast TV that will allow casual FB fans to check out the SoCon/App. 11 Million homes is what the old PBS deal reached. That hurts.

For the 13th year in a row, the flagship station of ASU athletics is 100,000-watt superstation WKBC, 97.3-FM. WKBC’s coverage area includes 45 counties spread over five states: North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Combined with the network’s other 13 stations, Appalachian football and men's basketball broadcasts will again have the ability to reach nearly 10 million listeners during the 2011 campaign.

Combine the coverage of WKBC with the other stations and you have one of the biggest mid-major broadcast networks. period.

I get that this was a bad day to be a conservative. I even get that sometimes it feels better to vent about the opposing side on blogs. But, why AppFan?

I'm not going to engage any of you in a political discussion on here. I just don't see the point in dividing people who attended App State. Every one of us here has something in common, and that's a shared reverence for the university we all attended. I'm willing to bet many of us have had beers together in Boone, and never once were politics mentioned.

If you would like to debate politics, why not step over to one of the political blogs? Hell, I'll even come debate you on RedState, Drudge or whatever conservative blog you subscribe to if you'd like. There's absolutely nothing wrong with political debate, and I'd venture to say that's what makes our country the best friggin nation in the world. Just not on AppFan…it's ruining this site.

I agree with you. Maybe you and MIDWEST could go start your own AppState blog where you can belittle ASU as much as you want. I for one, am still interested in our team and this season at hand, as well as the FCS national championship.

  57. Watauga 72

    June 28, 2012 at 6:37 pm

We just need to play and beat the teams on the schedule….don't care if they're FCS or FBS. If/when we move to FCS, we need to do the same. We will continue to care about our team regardless of the level or opponent. As for recruiting, we've had our share of "diamonds in the rough" and FCS transfers. We're in the same boat as all the other teams in FCS, we have to dig hard and get lucky. How much will that change if/when we move to FCS? Will the quality of players we get magically improve? We'll be able to recruit more, but we'll still be competing against the same teams for these young men. Looking forward to it.

    June 28, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Touche 72, but something tells me we will do neither. We will probably be in the top 3 in the SoCon, but how can we not be when our team has so much support relative to the others in our conf.

I think the nature of recruiting in FCS is more volatile because it looks for the “tweener’s.” Those not big enough for FBS, but too big for D2. This is how we finish any where but tied for first in a league where we dwarf nearly every opponent in support.

  66. Appnaysayer

    June 29, 2012 at 3:42 am

Politics is one thing, but racist diatribes, to wit "that monkey in the white house" should be outlawed on Appfan. No excuse for that. Shame on you.

    June 29, 2012 at 4:32 am

I agree, Nay. Why don't we just stick with the facts…like that Obama ordered guns dumped on the Mexican border to increase violence so that he could legislate more gun control or that the national debt has almost doubled under under Obama or that the unemployment rate has averaged 9% with Obama (and only 5.7% during the Bush years and 5.4% during the Clinton years). You could throw in there that individual liberties and freedoms have completely eroding under the Obama administration as well. No reason to throw racist remarks in there. Simply calling him a radical fool is good enough.

Fast and Furious is FAR worse than Watergate. Even the Democrats who voted to hold Eric Holder in contempt know it! Oh, and Obamacare. Obama lied to American saying that it wasn't a tax and the Supreme Court just confirmed it is the biggest tax increase in the history of the world.

I could go on and on…

  68. Appnaysayer

    June 29, 2012 at 4:44 am

I'm really happy that SCOTUS upheld Romneycare. The plan is his. It's hypocritical for him now to come out against it. If you're worried about integrity and leadership, you should look at him. And it was your Republican-appointed Chief Justice who cast the deciding vote. As for your rants about Obama, your record on this site will well known and documented. You've made comments about his relatives living in huts. You've questioned his citizenship. And those are among the milder charges. I would urge you to examine your beliefs and your soul on these issues. Your obsession is beyond the pale and simply because you find a few supporters here who share your mania does not give you and your ilk the right to turn this into some sort of hate mongering blog. In the best of all possible worlds Appfan would put a stop to it. But they seem to lack a sense of direction, not to mention right and wrong.

    June 29, 2012 at 4:56 am

While I disagree with Roberts, I respect his decision. I just disagree with the policy itself and most people have no idea the far reaching negative implications.

As for fast and furious, the Democrats who walked out should be ashamed of themeselves. The Obama administration intentionally dumped guns on the border and a U.S. border agent was killed. His mother has every right to be furious.

The fact of the matter is that the federal government is becoming oppressive and there will be a rebellion, I can promise you. Obama has now successfully divided this country by race, class, gender, religion, political views, etc. That is not what a real leader does…a real leader brings people together.

    June 29, 2012 at 5:04 am

If you read more than one paper or news site for your information, you would know that it was true that Obama's brother lives (or lived) in a hut in Kenya. True, not made up by Midwest. I read that first in the NY Times, a liberal fishwrap.

Get over yourself, Nay. He lives in a hut. Maybe Obama should take care of his own "house" before he worries about us.

The real problem is with those who will not admit that they are BOTH very poor choices. Those who can defend either party are the problem we have in this country. we no longer care about what is good for the country or what is fair, we only care about winning. we only care about winning at any cost and the cost has become more than we can ever hope to overcome.

  72. Appnaysayer

    June 29, 2012 at 6:54 am

Never said it was made up. Simply that you cited it as a problem and a negative facet of Obama's life/politics. Why should it matter where his relatives live? Do we care where Romney's relatives live? Clinton's? Unless, of course, you have some other sort of agenda in raising "Kenya" and "hut."

  80. Watauga 72

  81. Appnaysayer

    June 29, 2012 at 3:04 pm

So you'd rather have a big business nanny state that caters to Wall Street, creating all sorts of tax doges and "incentives" for business. Rolling back regulations for clean air and water and allowing development to run amok. Why am I not surprised? As I've pointed out before, successful businessmen have made the worst presidents: Harding, Coolidge, Hoover (who was the last successful businessman to be elected). Show me a good businessman who was elected president and I'll show you a presidential disaster. Truman was a failed businessman, but a successful president. That should tell you something.

At any rate, Romney can't simply be a default candidate. Sooner or later he's going to have to say something other than "I'm not Obama" and we'll be able to glimpse that vast space between his ears.

    June 29, 2012 at 4:47 pm

What I want is liberty and freedom. Big government is not, and has never been, the answer to problems.

I love how liberals love to bash Romney when they have no clue about Obama's academic records. Watch the debates, my friend, and see who has the space between his ears.

I also love the way way you liberals keep demonize business. A collection of businesses IS the economy. Without private business, there will be no government workers. You morons think money grows on trees.

Of course, socialism always results in everyone living slightly above the poverty line, no matter how hard one works, how productive/creative one is, or how much risk one takes. I guess that's what liberals want. Liberals want everyone to be miserable, not just the lazy, unproductive F*cks.

Then you must be a liberal based on that last comment you made.

Now I have to laugh. How on earth can you put down big business on a football blog. No big business means no football.

JMcCray – stop making all of US miserable. Keep your comments on sports, not on your personal ill-informed half-witted political opinions.

My comments focus more on sports than Middie's, whom I give an occasional hard time. And my comment was made in the same sentiment; keep politics out off the board, we get tired of hearing the ranting. Half-wit.

No explanation required, JM. "Midwest", "Jambo", "Jack"…all the same person.
