Football season unofficially begins today with the SoCon football media day in Spartanburg.

The whole deal will be livestreamed online. App State coach Jerry Moore speaks at 1:30.

We assume sometime later preseason polls and such will be released.

There may also – maybe – be comments regarding the future of the entire league.

Maybe.

Meeting ‘candid, honest and at times awkward’

Ya think? – “Nooga chancellor Roger Brown said the league presidents and chancellors met for four hours. There was much discussion, he said, but little progress. “We spent four hours discussing all kinds of scenarios of membership, and we came to no real decision,” Brown said. “I think the commissioner was quite disappointed.””

MEANWHILE. CAA goes 1-fer-2? – “Sources say CAA wants Stony Brook for full membership and Albany just for football but Stony Brook will decline offer. Very . . . → Read More: Meeting ‘candid, honest and at times awkward’

Stink confirms CAA rumors

Talkative – “”There’s been an invitation from the Colonial to Davidson and Charleston,” Georgia Southern AD Sam Baker said in an article in the Statesboro Herald on Sunday. “We’ve not heard, as conference members, where that may lead. It would be hard to tell. I think they both benefit by being in our conference.” In the same article, Baker said the Eagles would not be leaving the Football Championship Subdivision for a Football Bowl Subdivision conference any time . . . → Read More: Stink confirms CAA rumors

Giglionosis may finally be cured

Longtime readers know well the history of Giglionosis, a non-fatal condition in which sanctimonious sports writers feel compelled to express outrage over a I-A/I-AA FBS-FCS matchup daring to ruin their Saturday afternoon.

Fans don’t care. They still buy tickets. Coaches are on record not caring. They agree to them. Athletic departments don’t care. They draw up the contracts.

But the sports hype machine? This .. should not .. pass!

Waiting – Yeager won’t discuss the talks that are ongoing with a number of schools, but said that “it’s still going to be a couple of weeks” before any announcement about the league’s future. Towson athletic director Mike Waddell said that he doesn’t expect anything to happen “until late summer or early fall”, adding that if this was a stew, “it would be cooked in a Crock-Pot, not a microwave.” The list of prospective members will likely include at . . . → Read More: CAA hunt will continue a few more weeks

Rule of life – Pro athletes are dumb with money.

Uh-mazingly dumb with money. Even those with a knack for business can be knocked, or simply fleeced.

Words of wisdom from the West

Ian Barnard is a junior O-lineman for App State. His 6-foot-4, 277-pound bod is penciled in as starting right guard.

Lotta pressure to perform. So he’s kuh-ILL-init in the weightroom. As are other Apps.

Big time.

Daniel Kilgore is an App State great beginning his sophomore NFL season with the 49ers. He knows what it takes to get the job done. He saw the Barnard twitters and offered some advice.
