App State-Griz gonna be an evening game

Two drifters, off to see the world There’s such a lot of world to seeSweet! – “The SoCon and ESPN announced that App State’s highly anticipated 2012 home opener versus Montana will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and be televised nationally on ESPN GamePlan and ESPN3.” App State-Stink will also be on TV internets, plus maybe one more – “The conference will select the final two Wildcard games in conjunction with ESPN3.” The rest of the App State home games will start at 3:30. Also, nice use of .. /fingers in air” “.

UNBEARABLE. Oh well – “ESPN GamePlan is a pay-per-view service, meaning fans will need to pay to watch the game through the platform. ESPN3 is streamed live online, however many Montana providers do not offer the service.”

  • The Rock is going to be NUTS. 34-35 thousand you think?

  • Joe

Maybe that many.. but I doubt it..

I am going to go with 32k

  • ASUGoose

I love attending night games at the ROCK! I predict easily over 30k at that game. GO 'NEERS!!

  • Zen

yipee, we have two games gare-on-teed to be on the internets…how frickin' awesome is that?

    The Southern Conference

We don't like to be watched.

  • APPFanAl

YAHOO!!!!! That's really gonna make the trip in from AZ worth it!!!! No place better to get out of the heat than The ROCK!!!!!

  • The Rock is gonna be rocking that night!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!! GO APP!!!

  • bcoach

    I'm going with 32,794

  • Appfan should set an attendance O/U.

Whatever it is, I'll take the over.

  • App Band

Just got that word straight from Sam Martin! CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!

  • ceez

    Blown out by ECU 35000

  • ceez

My phone messed up my previous post…

    Blown out by ECU 35000

The hill will be packed. Upset I can not make this game. Also upset I can only make homecoming.

  • ceez

Messed that post up as well….What's going on????

    Oh well….I am ready football

  • mountaineermaniac

    This night will be epic.

  • ceez

Attendance will really depend on the result of the ECU game. If we lose the same way we did to Tech (I doubt this will occur) then there will not be as many people.

  • Know Nothing

You serious ceez? A night game in Boone? P.A.C.K.E.D.

  • GRIZZZLY

    Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GRIZZZLY

The sqeal of the Mountaineer will fill the air from the tummy of the Grizzly bear!!! LOL It's going to be epic. What a game it will be!!

  • ceez

    Know Nothing

I know it will be packed. If we lose badly to ECU, it will just be less packed.

  • ceez

Why is Black Saturday never played at night? Serious question.

  • ASU3432

    YES!!!!!!!!

  • It expect a record crowd regardless of what happens against ECU but I think a blowout loss in Greenville is unlikely.

  • Reese

the night games always brings out the drunkest crowd. can't wait for the night game!!! bring on the griz! i remember the night halloween game against wofford. i was sitting on the grass and i remember people puking everywhere, costumes and all.

  • asumountaineer2000

I expect this game to be the most electric atmosphere at the Rock since Armanti ran all over Richmond in that night game in front of a national ESPN audience during the second round of the playoffs. That was the best game atmosphere I can remember! This one should be special. I look forward to seeing the Grizz fans that travel for this one, much respect, and look forward to a record crowd, especially after an ECU upset, what?

  • AppWyo

Drinking in Boone? I wonder if they drink in Missoula?

  • Appz

Thats how we make our university proud, see if we can be the drunkest crowd in ASU history. People puking everywhere… Can't wait for my kids to see that.

  • Appftw

I could easily see 33,000 at 3,333 ft. I'm basically putting a gun to my extended family's head and making them come up the mountain. You guys should do the same. They came for the GaSo last October and I don't think tailgating in snow was the best first impression. This is the game to end all games though. Perhaps the biggest non-conference match-up in FCS history? All I know is that the Griz are due for a loss and finding out what a real stadium and division-wide attendance leader look like.

  • Reese

If the weather is behaving, 34k easily packed into the rock for this one.

  • Jack '74

What is all this talk about not expecting a blowout in Greenville? When the Apps leave town with 24-28 more points than the Purple People, does that qualify as a blowout? I don't know, I'm just asking……………..

  • AppyNFlorida

Does anyone know when single game tickets go on sale? I live in FL and have been planning to go to this game since they announced it years ago. Already got my plane ticket and everything but can't seem to find the date that single game tickets go on sale on GoAsu.com Everything is about season ticket packages. Thanks

  • App Band

I'm PUMPED about this game! I just hope our "sometimes less than desirable behavior" fan base will BEHAVE themselves! I've heard great things about the Griz fans….passionate to the end but welcoming and hospitable. Please…can we return the hospitality and not behave like jerks?

  • Joe

Unfortunately, its usually the first game that brings out the first wave of idiots (i.e. freshman). The Montana fans were as kind as could be both times I have been up there — lets pass that on!

  • John

I think that the baseball team might be getting their rings at halftime. This will be awesome

  • App Band

All I've heard is that they're a classy bunch. If we show our um…er…uh…"tails", it will be humiliating!

  • yogi86

Since its an evening kick that should weed out the amateur drinkers that started too early and are passed out already, leaving the seasoned who can hopefully hold their liquor better.

  • Carbine

I just bought the Montana-Coastal-Wofford package, and it cost $97. Have prices gone up? Seems that way. Single game tix go on sale August 7.

  • Joe

Carbine, that's an average of 32.33 a ticket. That seems right around the same to me.

  • bcoach

there is a premium on the Montana and Elon single game tickets 45-40-35 depending on location

  • bcoach

i am just sitting here thinking. i don't do the bills so I have not seen a bill for season tickets in probably 15 years. was there a premium or increase for season tickets this year?

  • Murray

Penn State is going down. So sad

  • Joe

bcoach, I don't believe there was an increase. This seems to be the first year it actually makes sense financially to buy season tickets. The previous years, you didn't save any money with season tickets — this year you do.

Murray, it's not sad at all — its disgusting what they allowed to happen and they should go down.

  • GRIZZZLY

I paid $60 per ticket for a game against Eastern Washington in Missoula last year. I wouldn't blink an eye to pay the same at "the Rock" to watch this premier FCS matchup.

  • Tim

Yes John, we will be getting our rings at halftime of that game. At least that is the plan for now, as an alumni weekend is also in the works for that weekend. However it will depend on the new staff if that will still occur.

  • Monster Appfan

    +1 Jack 74

I am not hearing a peep from my ECU friends.. they know we got a pretty good shot at making them look silly this year.

  • Big Dave

This is the state of college football.

All the money is being used to fund the top leagues and teams. We get ESPN 3, not regional broadcasts and the folks in Montana can't even see this game. That really sucks.

  • nomadb

Have they not hooked Montana up with the internet yet?

  • ASUGoose

How does Montana get televised games on ROOT and the SoCon can't even get a "real" TV deal for our games?? When I said real, this excludes the joke of a TV deal we had with PBS…. The commish should be embarrased about that debactle…

  • Jamey

nomadb – Al Gore is not yet aware that Montana needs the interwebs. If his travels finding Manbearpig take him there, they may receive the gift of internet.

With regard to the ECU game – Those guys remember that we almost came back and beat them with Cadet at the helm. They will likely ride this one quietly knowing that anything can happen on any given Saturday.

  • Jamey

Goose – This season is brought to you by the letters "M" and "F".

The MF'er that was in charge of locking up a good TV deal apparently lacked "M"oney and "F"ocus.

  • Joe

Goose, Montana is the flagship university of the state — that is why they get statewide coverage. App is, unfortunately, at best, 4th in line in NC (thats assuming we are ahead of Wake and ECU which is unlikely)..

  • bcoach

    Dave

It is only going to get worse. The big boys are going to get more and more and the lower tier (fbs) is going to get less.

  • Appgrad11

Hey bcoach were not even low tier FBS. To all the pro FCS guys what do you think were going to get?

  • Reese

Appgrad11, I wouldn't get into it with the pro FCS crowd on Appfan. They're much older and wiser than us recent ASU alums.

  • AppyNFlorida

This just in…. Penn State is given the death penalty by the NCAA and App State is invited to replace them in the Big Ten for football only… I mean it is Friday the 13th right?

  • App Band

Good one, Fish! Miss ya, Buddy!

  • Carbine

The football pecking order in this state, as far as the local media are concerned, goes: UNC, State, Clemson (because of their ACC connection), Duke-Wake Forest (tie), the rest of the ACC (regardless of how far from NC they are found), South Carolina, the rest of the SEC, ECU, and finally, ASU. We occupy the media cut-off line, below which no team has a chance of being seen on television in a given year, though there could be exceptions depending on who they are playing. When Charlotte begins playing FCS ball they will debut about where ECU is.

  • Appgrad11

If we fail to move up then we will fall off that list completely with Charlotte moving in.

  • Happy 113th birthday to App State!

And we won't fall off the list, regardless of Cee's success and our subdivision, unless we start losing a whole bunch.

  • bcoach

You don't have to fall off the list to not be seen. How often do you see ECU? does anyone think we are ever going to be on TV every week? Here is a great question for everyone, just for fun.

What is your expectation? How often are you expecting to see ASU on TV after we move?

  • MikeM

We won't be on TV once we move. We just get to move out of this conference full of small private schools and this combined inferior/superior complex they seem to harbor towards us. Play some kids that want to play, not take cheap shots. And fans that support their teams, not just condemn us.

teams like Montana, or ECU or the stink. Can't wait for those three. Rest are stepping stones to the playoffs.

  • Appgrad11

Every ECU game was on TV last year. I know this because I was seeing a girl who used to be on the dance team at ECU and they would be one of the games we watched.

  • AppWyo

Please, if you think the fans will be better in the FBS you have got to be kidding. Every one knows that in North Carolina they won't let you be born in the state unless you pick a North Carolina ACC team to pull for be it Duke, Wake, NC State or Carolina regardless of where you go or don't go to school.

  • Carbine

Funny, I was born here and I never pulled for any of those teams.

  • bcoach

Ok let me change that. How often will you expect to see us on TV outside of NC where one or two of us live.

  • Greg

If we make a move to the FBS it will take years of building a brand that's attractive to TV. The idea that an "as seen on TV" deal doesn't just fall into your lap because you're an FBS school.

Besides, what network do you think is going to carry us? NBC, CBS, and ABC all have long term deals penned with the major conferences. Our best bet then would be to eventually pen a deal with Fox Sports South.

PS (maybe someone can shed some light on this) what ever happened to the SOCON game of the week on Sport South? Complain all you want about not getting on TV, but as one of the major SOCON powers we were a SOCON game of the week at least two or three times per season…some of the smaller schools in the conference were only shown once per season.

  • Greg

**The idea that an "as seen on TV" deal falls into your lap just because you're an FBS school is absurd.

  • AppWyo

Carbine, you know as well as I do that if you live in North Carolina you know two things and you don't even have to call yourself a fan of either and that is stock car racing and college basketball. You have to know a little about it because it is always a part of the local news. You almost always have a conversation about one or the other every week or two. When you go outside of North Carolina people think you are somekind of superfan because of what you know about the two.

  • Carbine

Never got into the whole stock car thing (my brother is a big enough fan for the both of us–and a few others, I think). I sorta pay attention to basketball, but only to ASU during the season, after that I follow the NC teams in the tournament. No, football is THE sport for me.

  • AppWyo

What I am saying is you are not a fan of college basketball or stockcar racing, but if you go out of state and talk to someone about those sports they will think you are some kind of super fan by what you know.

  • Carbine

    That is true.

  • MIDWEST

Turning left for a living is not a sport.

  • MIDWEST

Guys- think about it. TV is over and these conferences are living in the past. These executives of CUSA and SunBelt are 60 year old has beens. In 3-5 years, the schools that prosper will have a tremendous online presence.

We need to forget about TV and TV markets and build a strong digital brand.

  • Reese

Sounds like the Griz have their own set of issues…oh boy

  • Greg

Reese, it will be interesting to see what happens there. It appears the new coach is leaving the door open for Kemp to return. Can't say much not knowing what he was suspended for.

New coach, new staff, new AD, possible new QB, they have an uphill climb.

  • David

I think that is a good point Midwest made re an online presence. That is the now and future for a school like App.

  • appdreamin

Personally, I think Midwest made a good point about making four left turns about 300 times on any given Sunday.

I don't get our seemingly unbridled optimism about either ECU or Montana. Particularly ECU. I'm expecting them to do their best to run up the score, simply because we made it interesting in the second half two or three seasons ago.

Regardless of what actual attendance is for Montana, the powers that be should announce attendance of 33,333.

  • yosef82

    appdreamin

Because we should have won the last game with a team that had no direction, a pi$$ poor coaching staff and a rookie under center.

They have the worst defense in all of the FBS, (John Wiley is on that staff…..you know "Look out here they Come" Wiley). If anyone needs to be worried about being blown out it is the IDIOTS screaming ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!

  • appdreamin

I hope you're correct, 82. By nature, I'm pretty much a glass half empty sort. The upside of that outlook, if there is one, is that when I'm surprised it is usually positively so. I really hope to be very positively surprised about 4 pm on September 1.

  • tim

Actually ECU's defense went from worst (2010) to, I believe, 56th in the nation last year. Think their entire front 7 on D returns so they should be as good, if not better than last year. Their biggest question marks are in the secondary and at QB.

App's WRs must make plays which starts at the line where the hogs must keep ECU's front 7 off of JJ and give him time to make the reads. Dale Jones must dial up some pressure and force their new QB to be uncomfortable and the defense MUST make the initial tackle. They can ill afford to make arm tackles a la VT last year. WATCH THE BUBBLE SCREENS!!!

  • bcoach

yea I am very sure we will blow them out. I understand they are very worried about that. I hear some of the players are so afraid of us they are going to fake injuries so they don't have to dress. Pirates may have to forfit because they will not have enough players willing to face us. See their head coach used to coach for us so he must really suck also, afterall if you are and APP coach you must suck. Nothing good ever came out of an APP coaching staff. Just ask ol usless82

  • bcoach

    ooops damn keyboard! yosef82

  • Greg

Well said Tim, we haven't had a square you up and tackle defense in about 4 years, out plan has seemingly been to give up 21+ and try to out score you. We lost that tanacity and I hope the new coaching staff gets it back.

  • LPAPPFAN

    Tim

ECU allowed over 32 point per game last year…. That was good for the 97th ranked scoring D in the nation. Not anything to be scared of!

  • tim

LPApp, I was speaking in terms of Total Defense which did rank 56th last season. I'm guessing the 35 turnovers didn't help the Pirates defense out much and probably left them with quite a few short fields. Not to mention they had some high flying offenses in CUSA last year.
