Runway time.
App State has unveiled an alternate uniform featuring a vintage Yosef logo that will be worn for the Mountaineers’ Sept. 29 duel versus Coastal Carolina.
The alternate uniform features a black Nike Pro Combat jersey with athletic gold helmet and pants. The helmet and jersey feature the Yosef logo that adorned the Mountaineers’ helmets from 1971-79.
We miss the days when could see the name of the school from the stands. Now it’s … /adjusts glasses … we think we see …. /reaches for binoculars … ah …. there it is.
AWESOME! I need to find that decal for my car.
I like that helmet shade of gold and the logo is awesome. I vote to keep this helmet, sell the old black ones and then get flat black helmets with the block A as an alternate.
Seems like someone rolled out a vintage logo recenty…AppFan you continue to be a trend setter!
S
Is it September 1st yet?
Does anyone know where the link is to the appfan.com store?
If you're going to do a throwback…Go all the way. Throw back helmet, and pants, but they put the logo on a sleeve of a NEW Nike design?
Always fun to see alternate uni's, but a combo of the old and new is not my favorite. That and I have never been a fan of the winged shoulder pads. I may be in the minority, but I still like the block A as well, I feel like it is a major part of our identity.
I agree. Not a fan of the mashup uni, but I do love the old Yosef logo.

That logo is the real deal ,hopefully they'll go to it full time
This is a great day for App football.
Love the helmet/pants, not so much the pro combat stitching on the shoulder pads
Hell I say bring back the snow-capped A on the helmets for a game or two.
Snow-capped A = best logo ever
What is this, 'Project Runway' or Appfan?
Apporange +1
LOVE the old school Yosef on the helmet and on the top of the sleeves. Without the web on the shoulders, these would be really, really excellent uniforms.
What ASU Lacrosse said about the Nike Combat uniforms is correct. They do it with all of them and I don't believe we have a choice. I don't like it either but if we have a deal with Nike to make alternate uniforms for us, we have to play by their rules and that is their signature. Not everyone likes the alternates but I really enjoy them. I'd rather have one that Nike has to put their stamp on than none at all.
Agree Orange… we’re not Oregon, why do we do that shoulder stuff?
its official. appfan readers will complain about absolutely anything
appftw
by the way,
you can currently find the decal at the sports fan attic in boone mall, they have a large as well as a small old yosef head car decal
Some of you would like to go back to the days when football players didn't wear football helmets at all. I don't know but hasn't the Block A on the helmet been used the longest of any helmet design? The snow capped A was used the shortest of any logo. I guess some people would like to see the gold helmets back.
*solid gold helmets.
I think we need to change the school name back to Appalachian State Normal School, or hell even Watauga Academy!
The “shoulder stuff” is the Pro Combat Nike signature thing. Look at a few school’s Pro Combats (Florida, for example) and they have the exact same thing.
Rip those spider webs off the shoulders and replace that yeller with real gold and you’ve got one fine looking uniform!
Carbine +1
Regardless of what it’s called, Orange is right that it doesn’t jive with the old school feel of the rest of the uniform.
Saw one of those helmet listed on ebay………sweet.
If we spent as much time on our blocking and tackling as we do on working on all these different uniforms maybe we could have another championship.(:
I have liked all of our helmets. But I always tend to like helmets with the mascot on them verses school lettering. ND State's were pretty sweet if anyone saw them.
I'm excited about the merchandise line coming out as well.
This site needs to be changed to NagFan.com. You guys are pathetic. The uniforms are perfect. These uniforms are partially for the fan…these are for the guys that will be wearing them and the recruits that come in.
It is perfectly fine to say, "I like it", and move on…but no, everyone on here is suddenly a fashionista! You guys (?) are worst than women.
appthunder90 so nobody entitled to an opinion?
A version of Yosef was used on the helmet in 1965, from 1971 through 1979 and from 1983 to 1988. There is photographic evidence Old Gold was used from at least 1952 until 1982. BTW, the uniforms were all Black with gold letters.
Some good stuff here. Half way down the page.

Looks like it is bringing up just the one picture. Try this link.

I think it's great to have alternate uniforms once a year and the old Yosef logo brings back fond memories of my time at App….however the Block A has become the recognized symbol of App athletics and should remain at the forefront of anything we do in all sports. Flat black helmets with the Block A would be sweet. I too would also love to see the "snowcapped A" helmet make an appearance on a alternate uni someday.
Opinions are all different – you're entitled to like the uniform just as much as i'm entitled to dislike it.
I disagree with you, but i don't feel the need to call you a name because of it. It's an opinion, chill out.
Just happy to see the Throwback Yosef logo.
I love everything about this uni.
Maybe we should do like the Packers and get a brown helmet to represent the old leather helmets?!?!
What is next? NEON yellow shoes with Duck wings. I love the old Yosef.
Don't miss the most promising news here: Steven Miller looks to be in fantastic shape. Kid just needs to have a Devon Moore-type season, not a K-Rich season.
Now we see why ASU did the cease and disist on the old Yosef merchandise. Glad I got my shirt and hat when I did.
I'm surprised they let the pipe survive, what with all the evils of tobaccy and all.
Oh here BTW
http://www.nikeblog.com/2012/07/19/new-appalachia…
Serious question…..Why does App call their colors black and GOLD? Every pieces of merchandise I've ever seen (including these unis) are black and YELLOW.
I may actually bid on the auction this year.
you can get the magnetic decal at Mountaineer Mania on King Street (down the street from the Turchin Art Center)
CharlotteFan… err, CollegeFan, historically, our colors are Black and Gold. However, over time, it has slowly changed to Black and Yellow. The official yellow color is now Pantone 116U which is an goldish yellow..
Those things are SIIIICCCCKKKKKKK (in a good way). I could be picky about the exact color and logo….but I will refrain and just be excited about the overall design. They are going to look awesome when we put up about 60 points in them too. I vote we go to this FULL TIME and completely embrace the old school Yosef.
You have to admit that this is BY FAR the best alternate we have had. SICK!
I would imagine the "stay FCS" folks are the same ones complaining about these jerseys. Recruits want FBS over FCS. Recruits want Nike pro combat uniforms. "stay FCS" folks want their 50 yard line tickets, raley lot passes, and chances to hang out with the coaches and players like a high school team. After all, we're just little ol' app state. We don't need these nice uniforms to play in the SoCon.
When the color was changed in 1982 it was known as athletic gold. Over time the folks in charge of trade marks and the such have allowed it to become more yeller.
Jack
Althought I have had season tickets for about 20 years, I am not one of them. Don't park there and don't sit there, BUT! The simple truth is those are the guys who paid our way here. They deserve a little more respect.
“The Marching Mountaineers ”
When did we start marching?
So cheer for the Black and Pantone!!!
Jack You paint with a very broad, inaccurate brush. I'm one of those long time season ticket holders & Yosef Clubbers, since 1978, you have no understanding of. I've sat on the 50 yard line – now in the first row of the upper deck of the East Stands – ever since the upper section of the West Stands was built in 1979. I park on the front row, now in the Justice Lot by choice, but no longer hang out with coaches. I've found it much easier to be objective when you are not buddies with them. I also am a big believer in tradition and think it is a disgrace a few people in decision making positions were allowed to change a school color that had been in place for 50+ years. You guessed it, I dispise that awful Yellar which defiles our school's athletic uniforms. You say today's players want to wear Nike Combat uni's with all that crap on the shoulders. I don't see Alabama, LSU, Oklahome, Michigan, Ohio State, USC – the one in California – Nebraska, Arkansas, Texas and other traditional powerhouse programs having an issue with not being able to attract great players not wearing those webbed monstrosities. You are seriously misguided in your perception about many people like me. There are many in my age group who are very vocal supporters for making the move to FBS. We're no Johnny Come Lately's to this party either. Our bunch has been pushing the agenda since the day we were drop kicked down to 1-AA in 1982. I personally have the letters to Jim Garner, John Thomas, R Laney and Frank Borkowski to back it up. We were the group who forced the university into holding the athletic open forum which opened the door for the initial 1-A Study in 1995. Many of us were on that study group. We got the ball rolling to where we are today. There are many long time supporters – probably longer than many on this board have been alive – who want to see the program grow and progress to the FBS level. We may be old farts, but our passion and desire for ASU Football to achieve FBS status is unmatched by anyone.
Appman
Of course everyone is allowed their opinion. I wasn't indicating otherwise. I was thinking to myself, "finally, the athletic department has come to its senses and decided to bring the old Yosef back and feature him on the uniform and all will be well in appland". Not quite the case. It just seems that as a readership group, we will nitpick anything to death. At the same time I very much enjoyed the link you posted and thank you for your loyalty.
I personally do not like the Yellow color we have gone to. The original "gold" color was much better and is what I will always consider the school color. But, with that being said this uniform is wonderful. I likes allot!
The Old Yosef is one of the coolest school logos of all time. A real mountaineer has a corn cob pipe, a rifle and a whiskey jug! I have heard all of the politically correct folks say it promotes a stereotype and is unhealthy for the region. Well I was born and raised in these here hills along with many generations of my family. We all love the old Yosef and see it as a source of pride for our community. We see the "Gordon's Fisherman" as a abomination and the stupidest representation of hill folk ever conceived. I wish I would have been in the room when the idiot made the decision to switch the logo to that crap.
STUPID doesn't even begin to describe that decision! I an glad the administration has had a moment of clarity and redeemed themselves with this uniform design.
I LOVE IT!
I don't know about all of you but when I look at (for example) Wofford's "old gold" uniforms I think they look dingy. I like our color scheme. Is it technically gold? No. But yellow is a variation of gold, just as garnet is a variation of red, and if you try to tell a USC fan their colors are red and black it doesn't jive.
Love the throwbacks, would love to see us do them more often.
I'm more concerned about our performance on the field than the shade and hue of our jerseys.
Judge me not by the color of my jersey, but by the content of my 40 time…
Will these go up for sale?
Appthunder90 let me apologize for jumping to that conclusion. I freely admit being overly sensitive to the colors issue and the seemingly lack of regard for tradition at ASU. Frank Borkowski and his band of idiots did a tremendous amount of damage to the history and traditons of ASU. One example is the lie perpetuated by former Vice Chancellor Greg Blimling about the so called Founders Bell in front of the old library. Whern I confronted him with the truth he said "A" student told him he rubbed it for good luck before exams. Old Greggie spun that one stundent's story into "for GENERATIONS students have rubbed the bell for good luck." The real story of the bell (as told to me by a early 60's grad) is in the days before radio coverage of games someone would call the school to report on the success of the team. If the Apps won the bell would be rung in order to let the campus know. Hence The Victory bell. I could site a number of others, but you get the idea. I will always recognize GOLD as ASU's color and the old Yosef as the official logo.
Appman
I had never heard that about the victory bell. Being a current student, all I have ever heard about it is the story inscribed beneath it. I am constantly fascinated by stories of the place in a former time. Got any other gems you'd like to share?
Appman,
I wish more of our alumni would share their history of ASU and pass those stories down. I attended 2000-2004 and the entire campus has changed since. I can only imagine the amount of upgrades/changes/evolution in your time with ASU. Thanks for sharing the bell story.
As for the belief that we can knit-pick anything until we kill it on this board….GUILTY AS CHARGED. We have all begged for years to get the Old Yosef back, and now we are debating if they made the jerseys look right and if the yellow is OK. The simple fact is that there is no way to satisfy everyone. I look at it as a win that the administration has listened to the fans/students/alumni and come out with this uniform. There was a time not so long ago that we were being told we would never see this Yosef again.
I think the university does an extremely poor job of passing on the history of the school. Another involves our fight song and how political correctness changed it. Up until the mid 70's Dixie was played as a prelude to YIKAS. We can debate until the cows come home how Dixie has been used by the politically correct as a symbol of racism in America, but the tune does get your juices flowing and embodies the independent nature of mountain folk.
Being part of the marching band from 1972-1976, i can attest that Dixie was NEVER performed during those years. Don't know what you consider the mid-70's but you need to check your facts.
Can't complain too much … at least retro yosef is back!!!!
Sorry, intended to type mid 60's. Keys too close together for my old fingers!
