I work on campus. One of my pet peeves is students walking in to our office wearing Carolina shirts! Even worse is seeing students wearing ANY OTHER school's shirts to any ASU ballgame!

I'm guilty of wearing my Duke shirts around campus every once in a while but I bleed black and gold and will never wear Duke to any of out athletic events. In saying that, I don't think wearing a Duke shirt is as nearly unacceptable as wearing Chapel-Hill as Duke is private and Chapel-Hill is part of the same educational system.

First person I saw post this on facebook was an App grad and football season ticket holder who is an avid Chapel Hill basketball fan. I was forced to point that out to her and direct her to the pictures on her FB page of her and her husband (also App grad) wearing chapel hill sweatshirts. #ironic

Goes both ways. I didn't apply for colleges until very late in the year my senior year of high school… Bad mistake…. Got wait listed into App so I chose a close alternative to home for my first year…

One of my professors hated me from the get-go and it didn't take me long to realize why. I caught him always starring at me and what I was wearing. Sometimes he'd shake his head or roll his eyes when he thought I wasn't looking…

The thing is I always wore an App t-shirt or hat… He got so angry that one day in the middle of his lecture (I sat in the front of the class) he stopped and asked me why I always wore Appalachian State attire…. out of the blue…. in the middle of his sentence… without warning…

    So I told him…

I procrastinated and didn't send in my applications for college until late in the year my senior year (of high school)… I was wait listed at Appalachian so I needed to go somewhere else….

and I probably shouldn't have said it but I added….and I love black and gold and you'll NEVER see me wearing purple.

I chose to go to Western Carolina my first year… /throws up a little

**still happy that class was graded on 3 exams that did NOT have any form of essay questions and only multiple choice** — he couldn't give me a bad grade if he wanted… (actually made a 98 in his class)**

Was accepted to the holy land a couple weeks after this had occurred..

  5. App Guy

    July 20, 2012 at 12:17 pm

Oh and I made sure I wore something with Appalachian in it to his class every day after that….

Kinda thought about getting like an App State pencil or a small flag or something to put on my desk …. but …. I did sit in the front of the class hahaha

I know a handful of UNCc grads and over half are DIE HARD tar hole fans. The other half are females who are indifferent to sports in general, let alone UNCc, NWA, so lets not get started with that BS. It'll take more than making up soccer game attendance figures to convince the world you have >3,000 or so fans. Why else would these UNCc jack wagons spend every waking moment on

Anyway, I saw this (and shared it) on FB yesterday. The meme went totally viral and I actually thought it might end up on Appfan. The beauty of a school like App is that we don't rely heavily on unaffiliated NC red necks who arbitrarily chose a shade of blue when they were in middle school. The majority of our fans either went to school here or had a meaningful personal experience at The Rock or in God's country. We have a brand of passion and sincere loyalty, as opposed to the main stream bandwagonism of the Tar Hole types. This is why ECU and App are and will always be the only true football schools in NC. We manage to pack 30+ thousand into KBS on Saturdays and these are people that have come to know and love Appalachian, not some toothless hillbilly who never went to the school that spends all day at the job site yelling, "how bout them Tar Heels" for the sake of his own ego.

T-shirt infidelity is a problem at App (way more so at a school like UNCC that completely lacks any identity or experience). I wrote something about App's in particular on my long-abandoned blog a while ago if you guys are curious of my take.

  8. Appywho?

    July 20, 2012 at 2:04 pm

Odd a kid that got wait listed at App had to go to Western. They are about the same acedemically. The prof was most likely upset b/c you were supporting another community college like App instead of Western.

  9. coloradoneer

    July 20, 2012 at 2:14 pm

So what, only folks who graduated from Appalachian are permitted to wear our colors? I am proud to see anyone wearing an Appalachian shirt including an uneducated redneck (wait, am i one of those?).

  10. Appywho?

    July 20, 2012 at 2:41 pm

"(wait, am i one of those?)"

Inorder to answer that question, you must first answer this one: "Did I attend Appystate?".

The answer to the second question is the answer to the first question.

    I am here to help!

Didnt bother me in the least to see students from other Big Ten schools on National TV wearing App State gear at their games against Michigan in 2007!!! Quite proud to see

Appywho, no, you're only here because you're bored standing in line for a ticket to unc-c's first home football game. That and you're a moron.

  14. Keith

    July 20, 2012 at 5:55 pm

We have made a lot of progress over the last seven years. There is so much more App gear being worn today than in the past. In addition we get a lot of support from NC residents who didn't attend college (those walmart t-shirt wearers). The average person in the western part of the state pulls for App, our problem is exposure. We have to get on TV in our on state (not ESPN3). A lot of residents who didn't attend college pull for the ACC schools because they are from NC. We have to continue to challenge that idea with APP as a viable alternative. Until the 3 National Championships that was unimaginable.

We shouldn't make fun of the bandwagon Carolina has…we have to figure out how to convert as much of it to black and gold as possible.

    July 20, 2012 at 6:37 pm

I remember when the only place to get Appalachian Merchandise was the book store and Mountaineer Mania. Remember that bumpersticker they had that said, "It's not my fault that you went to Carolina." When I was at the University of Wyoming I would see these green UNC shirts and wonder why UNC was green instead of Carolina Blue. The reason, University of Northern Colorado which is in Greeley, Colorado home of the worlds largest Feed Lot. You smell Greeley before you see it.

    July 21, 2012 at 3:11 am

ask gonzo. he makes up the rules we are suppose to follow.

  18. Dr. Gonzo

    July 21, 2012 at 3:46 am

It's my opinion, not a rule. Take it or leave it. I just think there is a very small percentage of our fan base that doesn't have a direct association with the school (ie alumni, kids of alumni ect) and that we should embrace such a sincere following. I didn't make the meme, but it falls right in line with the way I've always thought of UNC vs App fanship.

I travel allot on business…….. I mean allot! I am all over the southeast region of the United States. I see block letter "A" on vehicles everywhere and I love it. I wear allot of APP Gear when I travel and years ago I would get a blank stare from others traveling with me. Now people come up to me and say, "Did you attend Appalachian State"? When I answer "Yes" it is usually followed by the comment, "Impressive" or some other positive acknowledgement.

I can't even begin to tell you how damn proud that makes me. For whatever reason we have a popular "brand" right now with a good reputation. I hope the powers that be recognize that and do whatever they can to preserve it.

    July 21, 2012 at 5:41 am

I'm an ASU graduate and currently a grad student at UNC, am i allowed to wear a unc shirt? I really hope i get everyone's stamp of approval.

Everyone is taking this topic a little too seriously. Anyone that wears an app shirt or supports ASU in any ways is A-Okay in my book. And it doesn't bother me to see people wear UNC/Duke or whatever regalia on the app state campus. It is possible to be fans of both institutions.

  21. mountaineer4life

    July 21, 2012 at 5:42 am

BA at UNC. MA at ASU. Darn proud of both and will wear whichever apparel I may feel, on any given day. No need to act like the insecure lots at NCSU and WCU, who trash other fan bases in order to make themselves feel better.

  22. Gwaltineer

    July 21, 2012 at 6:13 am

Probably half the people who come to games with me did not graduate from App.

  23. bigasufan

    July 21, 2012 at 8:37 am

If you attend aa athletic event at App and you are a student or alum wear the black and gold period! I think there should be a fine for those that are and wear anything else. For those that support the other NC schools and never attended that institution more power to ya. Everyone needs something to believe in even if it is the tar-holes!

Sometimes it is not cut and dry, we don't live in a black and white world. The humor in the image is that we all grew up with more than one idiot who fits the stereotype.

I grew up in a Duke household. My mom graduated from Duke in 1969 and I had been to 4 ACC Tournaments in the Iron Duke section before my sophomore year of high school. I went to basketball camp 3 summers at Duke in the late 80's, hell I was in the Charlotte Coliseum at the ACC tourny when the great blizzard knocked the power out and we Appys got a second week of spring break because the roads getting back to Boone were impassable.

All that is to say I messed around in high school and got wait listed at Duke, so I chose App over Chapped Hole for undergrad. The best thing Duke ever did for me was wait list me and send me to App. I still cheer for Duke and from time to time proudly wear the logo on shirts or hats. I'm tried and true black and gold though, and should App ever play Duke in any sport, I'd be pulling for the Mountaineers no question.

  25. Reese

    July 21, 2012 at 10:33 am

Oh and by the way, I was at the Dean Dome when ASU played UNC. I grew up a huge UNC basketball fan, but I was decked out in my App State regalia in the Dean Dome.

  26. Jack

    July 21, 2012 at 1:48 pm

People who went/go to App and wear gear from other schools they never attended are only patronizing their own school. I'm not saying you have to disklike every thing non-App, but come on, have a little pride in yourself.

Those schools to the east don't need you to advertise for them. If you went to grad school there or something, ok, I get it. But if you're still pulling for them because that's "who I grew up watching," then please remember that you have nothing invested in those schools. You're investment is in App State. Why not promote your investment instead of someone elses?

  27. Reese

    July 21, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I'm having difficulty understanding why you can't promote and be proud of both universities, Jack. So if i see someone on the UNC campus wearing an ASU shirt that never went to App, should I strip them of their shirt?

I'm a huge fan of german national soccer. I like to wear the german jersey, but i never lived there. does that make me a bad american? but if the US and Germany played, of course I'm rooting for our guys.

Your argument has little merit and is a bit short sided. Unless I'm missing something, because I've never really understood something. However, I will say fans wearing (say UNC for ex/) to an ASU football game would be a little silly. But what if they aren't really an ASU fan and were checking out The Rock? I don't mind if those people come to our games, I'm glad they are there to support the home environment at our stadium.

  28. Dr. Gonzo

    July 21, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Good post, Reese. I honestly respect anyone as long as they pull for their own Alma Mater in the event the two played each other in anything. I'd just prefer to see a lot less powder blue ect in or around the ASU campus. It's just obnoxious and irritating.

  29. Reese

    July 21, 2012 at 2:50 pm

Dr. G, I never really noticed a lot of UNC themed regalia around campus. Not anymore than than anywhere else in NC. I can understand your frustration though, as it does get a little irritating after a while.

  30. Jack

    July 21, 2012 at 3:32 pm

If someone from another school wants to wear App gear then that's great. I went to App and I want people to be a fan of App whether they went there or not. That's not the same as saying it's great for an App grad to promote another school. If people want to promote my investment when they have made another then I say go for it.

Personally, I pulled for another school when I was in high school. After going to App I honestly don't care much about the old school any more. I didn't just wake up one morning and decided to stop being a fan of that other school. My time at App showed me that I had made an investment in an institution and it would be counterproductive for me to promote another school. I don't think that is hard to understand.

  31. Reese

    July 21, 2012 at 8:39 pm

so you can't promote both institutions?

  32. Anyman

    July 22, 2012 at 9:20 am

Walmart carries a good bit of APP gear.

  33. AppWyo

    July 22, 2012 at 10:25 am

Saying you should wear only Appalachian Merchandise in Boone is like saying you can only pull for a Professional team that is in the city you live. If that were the case there would be no Redskins fans in North Carolina.

  34. Know Nothing

    July 22, 2012 at 12:06 pm

    North Carolina isn't a city ^ 😛

    July 22, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I recently spotted a former App State QB wearing UNC gym shorts. Weak…incredibly weak.

Get off the fence and make a decision for App today.

    July 23, 2012 at 6:25 am

I see alot of Native Americans wearing NC hats in Montana. I asked one " Tarheel fan?" He replied "Northern Cheyenne." LMAO…

  37. Appftw

    July 23, 2012 at 6:41 am

As I see it, this is not directed at people who occasionally wear other's school garb because of a friend who went there etc., but some people just take it to an extreme that seems to put another school's degree above yours. If all these half-assed fans supported app full force, we'd be right there with Chapel Hill.

    July 23, 2012 at 8:06 am

Wearing the gear of another school is only acceptable if it is worn on occasion and the school must be west of the Mississippi River. Those are the rules. Otherwise, the risk of App State infringement reaches an intolerable level.

  39. Dr.Gonzo

    July 23, 2012 at 9:07 am

Your cartoon reminded me of a funny story a buddy of mine told me recently (I live just outside of Ann Arbor and this guy went to Michigan State). Seems that every time he would come home from college all the people from his high school that didn't go to college would show up at their old high school haunts wearing Michigan gear…..Walmart Wolverines as he called them…..and would tell him he was a second class citizen because he was a sparty. After hearing this enough times, he finally asked one clown "have you ever been there"…well no…"have you ever been to college"….well no.."have you ever been to a college"…well no…."and you're calling me the idiot"? Priceless. Seems Walmart touches lives throughout the country.
