Ya think? – “Nooga chancellor Roger Brown said the league presidents and chancellors met for four hours. There was much discussion, he said, but little progress. “We spent four hours discussing all kinds of scenarios of membership, and we came to no real decision,” Brown said. “I think the commissioner was quite disappointed.”"
MEANWHILE. CAA goes 1-fer-2? – “Sources say CAA wants Stony Brook for full membership and Albany just for football but Stony Brook will decline offer. Very happy in AEC.”
?????
Sounds blurb sounds a lot like the discussions that happen on Appfan all the time. A lot of conference realignment talk with no real results or agreement.
Cheers!
*that blurb sounds

There's some drama happening right now with CAA expansion. I know this doesn't necessarily have much to do with App yet, but check it out if your interested.
Yeah, yeah. The SoCon meeting was disorganized and fruitless. What else is new. In other news, PSU's "death penalty" is going to essentially turn them into an FCS football school.
FBS now.
I hope the SoCon gets ambitious and snags Coastal Carolina and Liberty. I don't care if CoC/Davidson/Elon do leave the SoCon. It'll add more ooomph to the lackluster in conference schedule.
Add ooomph to the lackluster conference schedule by Adding Myrtle Beach U and Falwell's Boys? Nothing against these always decent football programs. Happy to watch us play them anytime. But I really don't think this is the schedule upgrade we should be reaching for. (regardless of the sport)
Was not aware that Elon was considering leaving (honestly I've been paying less and less attention to Appfan since every thread devolved into a pissing contest with UNCC fans) but it would be a major loss to the SOCON if Elon left. They've turned themselves into a perrenial playoff team.
The SEC didn't become the best by watering down its field and making it easier for Bama to win. The SOCON needs to go on the offensive and recruit quality programs, make it easy to switch (no exit fees if you stay 5+ years). Go get JMU.
Who said anything about being content with that schedule? But for the time being while in the SoCon, at least make it a more competitive conference and one that is stronger in all sports, which is what adding those two schools do. It'll give App more incentive to move up by playing another school that is looking to do the same (Liberty). GSU, App and Liberty could be seen as a packed rivalry to add to a conference like SunBelt or whatever else.
Go get JMU.
Agreed. They gotta be upset at the northern adds to the conference. If the CAA does get Albany, Stony Brook and Rhode Island stays that'll add travel cost to JMU. Add JMU to the list of Liberty and CCU moves I'd love to see the SoCon make if it loses Elon/CoC/Davidson.
Greg- What are you talking about? Elon has only been to the playoffs one time (2009) and has only had a winning season 3 times since joining the SoCon. They only average around 9,000 people per game. Other than baseball they aren't a loss at all. I'd take Liberty or JSU over them all day.
WacoKid…don't you remember when Elon won the SoCon Title? They have t-shirts and posters to prove it. HA!
Need to go to the FBS… but in the meantime Liberty and JMU would enhance the tie to VA ,,,and Coastal would help build more of a tie to SC recruiting. This would not add to travel and like it or not… The Southern Conference will always have a soft place in all who have played in it. It has always been called the "Cradle Conference" Many SEC, ACC, WVU, Marshall, ECU etc… are all proud of their time in the SOCON!!!
We too will be proud of our past in this GREAT Conference!!!!
Elon , being close to I85 would be stupied to leave!!!!!!!!! When they joined I thought" What is the SOCON thinking" however they have become a good addition. The same can be said of Wofford….They have become some of the MUST games in recent years.
The Carolina Panthers have just made a trade to bring in Louis Murphy-WR from Oakland. 4th year guy out of Florida that showed great upside in his first two years before slipping last season. That is officially the end of the Armanti Edwards era in Carolina. There is simply no longer room on the roster for him and time has run out for him to prove his worth.
2012-2013 Wide Receiver Corps:
Smith, LaFell, Gettis, Adams, Pilares, Murphy
Last I checked – Armanti hasn't been traded, yet. Enough doom and glood. Until that happens, he has pre-season to prove himself (and hopefully he can take his pre-season performance into the regular season).
* gloom
If the Panthers won't use him, I'd like to see him get a shot in San Diego, or Tennesse.
Good as gone. 10th string receiver is not where you want to be.
Gloom and Doom was last season….We have moved on to Dead and Gone. He needs a fresh start with a team that will use his strengths and not relegate him to punt returns with no blocking. I think he still has a shot to make a career in the NFL, but the longer he is stuck in Carolina as #6 or #7 on the depth chart the slimmer that chance gets.
man, I wonder how our football team will be this year?
He never really had a chance in Carolina. Drafted too high and way too much pressure right out of the gate. He would have been better off going to the Chiefs or Bills and flying under the radar while he developed.
Hope he lands somewhere where he can thrive.
If AE does get his walking papers, maybe he could get on with the Lions?
At the rate they're going, the DWI's and Mary-Jane arrests are going to gut Detroit's roster. Methinks they'll need all the help they can get. Plus, he could probably pick up a nice crib on the cheap in D-Town…it's not like folks are lining up to move there.
I don't know where, on anybody's field, Armanti could/should/would play. The poor fellow has been kicked around (literally) in Charlotte for so long that he might have trouble in adapting, even if he found a team that wanted him–Say hello or go to hell, John Fox.
One could certainly that John Fox was at least part of the problem. No respect for that man whatsoever. He quit on his team and he was not loyal to the man who signed his paycheck. Piece of crap, in my opinion.

Armanti will get another chance…count on it. My hope is that he goes to New England, just as it was rumored before he was drafted. They could use him, and with Bellicheck's creativity we might just see some of the old AE again.
Law,
Good article. Well, welcome to FCS Penn St…. lets see how competitive they are for the next 4 years. Can we get a shot a them in 2015 or 16?
I would love to see Armanti go to the CFL as a QB!! Then he can show everyone just how special he is! (it worked for Dpug Flutie…)
I'm with Midwest on this one…. AE simply had too much pressure in Charlotte and he wasn't ever really given a chance under Fox. That year wasn't exactly good for his confidence. He was drafted too high and the fans in Charlotte have crucified him after they had to hear how he was the best football athlete in the state of NC during his four year career at App State. I also wish he would have been drafted by ANY other team in the NFL as I think it would have been better for his development. It pains me to say that as a Carolina Panthers fan, but the truth hurts…. He never had a chance on a team that had a lame duck coach and in a city that expected him to start and produce from day #1 as a wide receiver in the NFL…. a position he never played before reaching the highest level of the game. People are idiots.
That being said, I wish Rivera would consider AE as the #2 QB option behind Cam. Can Anderson really run the offense like Cam? I don't think so. I actually like Derek Anderson but I don't think he could run this offense like AE. Clausen will never see the field again because he's absolutely terrible.
Can't we get Penn State to come to Boone for a game? How about for the home opener in 2016? Sounds like they may need the $.
NOTES OF INTEREST: The new band director will be in town over the weekend. Band Camp begins on August 10. BOD will travel to East Carolina.
And for whatever it may be worth. Paving is to begin on River Street and most of King Street all the way to Depot. College Street is also closed but you can get to the library parking deck by way of Howard Street or by the Turchin Center. Hope all this is done before students come back beginning August 17 when freshmen arrive.
Yeah, I heard about the road trip to ECU. I hope Kevin will let them shed those HOT uni jackets! WHEW!!!!!
Media Guide anyone?

Don't count Armanti out with the Panthers yet. Bad situation to be sure, but not impossible. Training camp always brings surprises.
Anyone heard how the team is looking? I know camp doesn't up until next week but have we heard about any standouts so far?
I'm just getting anxious about college football and I haven't heard much on any specific players so far this year.
GO 'NEERS!
Looking through the media guide from Gonzo's link, I am a bit disappointed with the depth chart on defense. Doug Middleton was one of the few bright spot last year. He is listed as the star position on defense, which is only used in some packages, and Patrick blaylock was listed as the starting safety. In my opinion, Middleton did a much better job and showed more potential at that position than blaylock. Much quicker and a better hitter
The media guide does and season prospectus do nothing but garner excitement. Without the camp, its hard to tell where anyone will be..
I will say I am happy to see Middleton in the star position — he can do some damage there. I also look for Jamill Thomas to take over a CB spot by mid season..
WBTV is getting on the 49er bandwagon. They were showing the helmets today. Nothing from them on the Apps
Carbine, I hope you're right about AE. However, it all comes down to snaps.
Will AE get enough snaps during the preseason to showcase any improvements he's made in his game? With all of the WR's infront of him, this is beginning to look more and more unlikely.
I think he would be great in New England
Found this on NCAABBS
WAC Expansion?
http://www.examiner.com/article/college-…b_arti…
I had the opportunity, along with several other reporters, to interview Jacksonville State head coach Jack Crowe at the OVC's Football Media Day gathering this afternoon. As always, Crowe could be counted on for candid, provocative answers.
Will Aubrey: Three or four years ago you told me that you were considering moving to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Is that something you are still considering?
Jack Crowe: The board has made the statement that we are going to investigate that. But we haven't run our program differently because of that statement. It looks like there will be five or six FCS schools that are going to be pulled into the bottom of the WAC. And we'd like to have a discussion to see if we're one of them.
Saw that on AGS, HB.
WAC for football only might be an option after all.
http://bilofootball.blogspot.com/2012/07/wac-medi…
"That was followed by a meeting with WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd, who probably has one of the most difficult jobs in the FBS ranks this season. He is losing 5 members, leaving just 2, but he was as upbeat as ever heading into the season, and we were able to discover that he will be making an announcement in the next 2 to 3 weeks about possible new members joining the WAC for football."
If an east coast WAC football division emerges, the next hurdle would be where to put our other sports. Unless there's a full commitment by at least 7 other eastern schools, the WAC for other sports would never work because of travel costs. CAA or SoCon with other sports? Someone on the MMB brought up a good point about the SoCon. With the prospect of losing App, GaSo, Davidson, C of C and Elon at the same time and having only a few options to replace them, they might be more likely to allow us to stay for other sports. ASU without football is still a very valuable asset to a league like the SoCon.
