An interview with Jamal Jackson. Gettin’ ready!

Linebacker dismissed. “ASU linebacker John Rizor, dismissed from the football team this week, was among two men charged with misdemeanor assault after a fight early Sunday morning in downtown Boone.”

Camp starts. “I’m anxious to see what kind of condition they’re in,” Mountaineers coach Jerry Moore said. “I’m anxious to see what kind of retention the offense has had from the spring, though we haven’t changed a lot.”

Can’t let go of last season. “We had things like, ‘Why am I not playing?’ that kind of deal, or ‘I don’t like my coach.’ In my role, I’m trying to hold it together, thinking we can overcome a lot of that. Looking back, probably the worst thing to do was just try to hold it together.”

Hope springs eternal. No pressure.

Meanwhile, in Denver. Sweatin’.

In random FBS expansion rumors. “Jacksonville State football coach Jack Crowe created a little buzz during Monday’s Ohio Valley Conference Media Day when he said correspondence has been exchanged about the ailing Western Athletic Conference possibly adding several Southern FCS schools to maintain its survival.”

What does it say about a veteran coach who is "just trying to hold it together?" Isn't the objective here to do a little more than just hold it together? Geez. Why don't we start acting like a leader and stop trying to be best friends with players. They have plenty of friends already, trust me.

The throwback Yosef on goasu.com is lame. We AppFan's gear was so much better!

  • "WR Armanti Edwards has shown improved pass-catching ability in camp thus far. Grabs nearly everything thrown his way."

That is what i like to hear! Keep fighting AE, ignore the media and fans!

    Wooohoooo Armanti!!

Nope, SoCon jettisoned ETSU and VMI back at the turn of the century when they wanted to move their football teams out of the SoCon and keep everything else in. In ETSU's case they were hitting delete on the football.

  • syntrandy

Just wondering if the Socn looses some non-football schools to the CAA they may need to back fill them? Not they we have any FBS stuff right now but maybe they (Socon) would think about that?

Has their ever been a more pathic and telling statement ever made about Jerry Moore?

Hell Coach we do not need to bust your hump. You do fine all by yourself!

Damn…….I getting sick to my stomach. Can you say, "LACK OF LEADERSHIP"?

  • Mountlenoir

lots of those player comments are indicative of their own character, too.

  • ASU in the QC

Good riddance Rizor. 3 strikes and your out. regardless if you had a starting spot. Pathetic.

“WR Armanti Edwards has shown improved pass-catching ability in camp thus far. Grabs nearly everything thrown his way.”

isnt that a NFL Wr's job?

  • Pelican

Rizor, Barnes, who's next? What's going on inside the program? Losing players faster than my head is losing hair. Time for an independent probe, I'd say.

  • Reese

    Rhog,

yes. catching the football is an NFL WR's job, and not everyone can do it well. Armanti happens to be doing well at the stated job requirement. don't really understand your snide comment.

  • bcoach

Don't need a probe. There is a very simple answer.

We are having to deal with the kids their parents send us. Think about it. The problem was not created here. It was created back home and now we have to deal with it. We just need to can the $hit heads earlier.

  • MIDWEST

I agree 82. It's time to move on.

  • Greg

    Brosef.

If he's innocent, I wish the kid luck. This is bigger than football, this could ruin his life.

If he's guilty, I hope they throw the book at him.

It's either a case of 'entitled athlete got rough' or 'apathetic girl sees opportunity to gain something'. Sad either way.

  • GeneGenethedancingma

bcoach we make our own bed by not doing proper background checks on these guys. Can't be 100% right, but how many have we lost last 3-4 years? Disturbing Rizor was on still the team after being charged with DUI few months back. Where are the questions about that?

  • Appthunder90

    Genegenethedancingmachine

How exactly would a background check illuminate an event that had not yet occurred? On to your other topic, we recently had a receiver get a DUI an remained on team with a 2 game suspension, not to beat that horse. I'm not saying that either punishment is/was adequate or not adequate, only that the precedent had been set.

  • The rock

Background checks? Most of these kids were 16-17 when we started recruiting them. I doubt they had any records at that point. Most kids, regardless if they are football players or not, tend to make more mistakes and get into more trouble when they are on their own in college. Kids screw up. It happens. Rizor should be off the team, and he is. What else are the coaches supposed to do? They are cracking down and disciplining them, the rest is up to the players to make good decisions

  • Gwaltineer

I hate it when idiots must be reminded of simple things.

Jerry Moore is our own Joe PA. Since his tenture, what has Moore helped cover up with with previous AD Laney and current AD Cobb? They are so afraid of bad publicity in doing what needs to be done; act swiftly. If we had an independent investigation, what wouldn't they find?

Rape, violent assualts, etc. I hope what I type next never happens but …….How long before someone is killed?

  • Jack '74

Comparing JM to Joe Pa may be a tad strong for me but the last 4-5 years of on-field AND off-field hijinx do show that he is not on the top of his total head coaching game any more. Maybe two Moore years? Maybe one Moore year? SS is in town now. It is only a matter of time. The long-term plan seems to be coming together….IMO.

  • Gwaltineer

Good lord folks. What would you be happy with? 16-0 every year with 21 point wins every game and a team filled with walk ons?

The man has had one losing season at App. Ever.

  • Keith

I'm disappointed Rizor wasn't suspended after the DUI. Things have changed a lot over the years with media, but it is getting old when a large number of stories you can find about our team deal with assault, DUI, fighting etc.. Every football team has to deal with this from time to time, but we seem to be dealing with it a lot lately.

Our players are getting a great education free. If they can't follow the rule of law, they aren't disciplined enough to be on the team. I don't want things like this swept under the rug, I want these type guys out of the program.

  • MIDWEST

I certainly hope this is his last year. He is starting to become a liability, not an asset. Thank goodness Scott is back in town, that's all I can say.

  • yogi86

It's symptomatic of successful recruiting and better athletes. Unfortunately, these kids are coddled and catered to and given preferential treatment at their high schools. Infractions that would result in expulsion or suspension for the average student are overlooked. No accountability.

  • ASUGoose

If I read this correctly, if we were in the process of moving up to FBS, we could potentially get an invite to a bowl game while still being in FCS…

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/82

  • Yosef91

I agree with Gwaltineer. One losing season out of 23, 17th in D1 football wins, 10 SoCon titles,

3 National titles, and yet people call him a liability (notice I didn't call you idiots "fans"). Pathetic. You people need to get your head out of wherever it is and realize that coaches like Moore don't grow on trees.

  • MIDWEST

"Just trying to hold it together" is not what we need.

  • bcoach

Thank you NCAA for proving the point that bowl games mean nothing. Get in with a 5-7 record? Can't fill all the bowls with teams that have that outstanding record of 6-6? that means bowl games are a dime a dozen. It means that if you don't get in a bowl you should hang your head in shame draw the blinds and don't come out of the house.

Comparing paterno to Jerry Moore is done by morons.

No you can't get in a bowl if you are in FCS.

JM haters need help. There is just something wrong with them. Look at his record. most every school in the country would love to have his record.

Yes we have guys who are bad actors just like every program in the country. Yes we need to weed them out. Yes we need to do a better job at getting rid of the problems but we are better than most.

One last comment is that you are doing the same thing to Satterfield that you did to AE.

  • MIDWEST

    "look at his record" -bcoach

Look at Paterno's record…that attitude was part of the problem. Character and leadership matter.

Coach Moore should also be gracious because he was fortunate to have some great assistants as well. He deserves credit for what he has accomplished,no doubt, but he should also be accountable when things go wrong. He has a tendency to not accept personal responsibility for the negatives.

As for the game plan, I've never thought that he was a very creative coach or had a high football IQ. His teams are also often undisciplined. Just my opinion.

  • bcoach

Let me be clear I make no comparison to records and dicipline. I refer to records only to defend his coaching abilities. If I need to pick between clean and win I will take clean EVERY time.

Jerry Moore has more Character in his little finger than that other slimeball would ever hope to have.

  • bcoach

When it comes to diciplin on the field over the last few years you win. there are a couple of guys who would never have played another down of football for me.

  • Jack '74

There is on the field performance and then there Is off the field performance. There are only 16 (at the most) on the field days every year. The other days number 350 or so. I have NEVER questioned the Apps's Saturday performances (well not too many, anyway) but the other non-football behaviors are becoming too numerous to count and too embarrassing to want to remember. I refuse to believe that this bad stuff is "just a sign of the times" and we should "just accept it and get over our old, bad, getting senile (but keep sending those checks to the Yosef Club, please), selves". Nope, can't and won't do that. It has to be our (Appalachian) way or the highway…….long standing, HOF coaches notwithstanding.

  • MIDWEST

Character as a football coach is more than just living a "clean" life personally. It's about demanding it in your players and ensuring that it happens. Anyone can do, but not everyone can teach.

JM's legacy needs to be more than about wins and losses.

  • sideline observer

very random here….but Cadet seems to be doing really well in Saints camp. he and brees have had a few moments thus far.

  • bcoach

    Jack 74

It is a sign of the times, but no we should not accept it. I also do not condone what has been happening the last couple years. It needs to stop and it needs to stop NOW. BUT, I will not accept any comparison of anyone at ASU to that slimeball piece of crap at Penn State. He is no better than Sandusky and no I don't care what his record is.

  • AppOrange

    Bcoach,

I agree with most of your comments, however, just becuase a guy has a great record, history on his side, etc., that does not mean he should be able to stay forever, which is what it sounds like you are for. Some guys just dont want to let go, wheather in the corporate world, or in sports. For an example of this, we could look to JoePa. He needed to leave a while ago, even before any of this Sandusky crap happened.

With this said, I for one, do not want to see Jery go anywhere until I see him as a liability, which I don't. If we have a couple of years outside of the top 15 then I will change my mind. With what we have invested in the program, we should never be irrelevant in FCS. That may not sound good and a little spoiled, but we have so much more to offer than most every FCS school, it would be inexcusible to me.

  • Murray

Tone at the top is something Jerry Moore, Charlie Cobb and Ken Peacock have failed in delivering to the students. We all know that times change but discipline should remain constant and consistant among the student body.

There is a double standard with the football players. Had Rizor been disciplined for the DUI, I would like to think that he would not have put himself, family and Appalachian in the headlines.

Alumni are right to be angry and upset, anything less shows those who condone this type of behavior.

  • Jamey

Jesus f'ing Christ….can these players stay out of the freaking news? Gainey, Tanyi, Barnes, Rizor, insert name of next player here…. You are at ASU to do 2 things:

    1. Get an education

    2. Play football

Nowhere in there does it say GO TO JAIL or assault people.

  • MIDWEST

It really is amazing because these types of actions go against everything they have been taught in football since the time they were 7 years old. Every coach I know at the youth level talks about how football can make you a better man and contributor to society. The problem is when everyone on the team is not held to the same level of expectancy…meaning the stars get preferential treatment (ie Alan Iverson…man, we're talking about practice). My answer would be simple: "You're damn right we're talking about practice and your ass better be there and you better show me something or you're sitting on the bench."

  • GRIZZZLY

Adam Brzeczek transferred from Stanford to Griz Nation. We need all the help we can get but I'm confident we will have a good team.

  • 2cents

Murray….go play in traffic. Excuse the figurative speech, but I have never seen you get on this site and say one positive thing about this program. I understand the frustration, but quite honestly, nothing has changed since you went to Appalachian other than how quickly and how attainable day to day distractions are disseminated amongst the mass. Honestly, you have more discipline today things like, twitter, blogs, and various other media outlets which make it virtually impossible for many matters to be "swept under the rug".

I actually applaud the University for everything they have done over the past few years. We, obviously are attaining far better athletes than when I played from 05-08. With the reward of better athletes to keep "your" national championships coming, comes greater risk. Boone is a small town with not much to do which makes it easier to get in trouble so as we grow, expect a few bruises.

For like the ninetieth time now, he was disciplined for the DUI. He was put on probation. Was that an adequate level of discipline? I'm not goin to say. Probably not but the precedent had already been set with coco's 2 game suspension for the same offense. You woul think these guys could get someone to drive them around.

With my generations wanton disregard for rules, common decency, common sense, personal accountability, and responsibility, you cannot hold Moore an peacock responsible for the actions of students or players. Trust me, they exude the highest character an expect it from everyone. Until society stops coddling kids (all of them not just pkayers) discipline will be an issue. It's time to hold your Holden accountable for their actions and stop giving them awards for every single thing they do in their life. A kindergarten graduation? Really?

If you don't like it, go play for Furman or Georgia Southern. If you accept the challenge, you will be a damn good football player and one hell of a man.

1st & most important – GRIZZZLY, youre welcome to join us as well for our tailgating festivities. There are a number of groups in the Stadium lot that will welcome you and your friends with open arms. The weather should be great and the stadium is going to be packed. Figure out a way to get here.

2nd – Moore is no JoePa!!

3rd – I'm grateful there werent camera phones and Internet blogs when I was in college…Mom & dad would have been up the mountain in a second to take me home. I share this because the behavior you're bemoaning is the same shannanigans that were going on when we were there, except now we all hear about it. Try and remember what it was like to be 18-22.

…before anyone gets their knickers in a knot and try's to twist my comments into condoning rape, stop! I'm simply saying that most of the behavior you reference is the same that too many college kids (including us) exhibit during that time in our lives. Let's remember that their graduation rate is higher than the general student population. And their GPAs are higher than the general population.

4th – HOW 'BOUT SOME FOOTBALL!

  • MIDWEST

I know, thunder, but the buck stops with the head coach. A good coach passes the glory onto others, but accepts all the blame when things go wrong. That's my only point. Be a leader.

  • Gwaltineer

I think as soon as someone on this blog says "if I was the coach I would do it this way" it is hard to take that person seriously.

We lost a game we should have won last year and looked horrible in three. No arguments that it was not a banner year. I think the fanbase is very entitled to call for some changes on the staff. They were made and made well from what I can see. The Rizor and Barnes are suspended before the season started. When would you have like him to do something?

I would also say that references to Moore and Paterno are so far beyond careless and reckless associations that it is pretty discusting. Do not try to justify why it is ok to compare someone to a child molestation cover up with zero grounds for such associations other than the profession.

  • Gwaltineer

I know a guy from the midwest who killed someone. I wonder if Midwest ever killed someone.

  • MIDWEST

I never killed anything or anyone, but I did finger Freddy.

  • Appnaysayer

I don't think the comparison between Moore and Paterno is valid. BUT, the real problem at PSU uncovered by the investigative report was a campus CULTURE that privileged football above all else and inclined even the the university president to cover up all sorts of wrong-doing. That's the REAL lesson for ASU here. The more emphasis we place on football or any other sport, the more likely we are to develop a similar culture of wrong-doing and coverup. We've gone more than a little way down that road. Let's hope we can turn around before it's too late. Academics and good citizenship have to come first. Period.

  • bcoach

    Appthunder90

People will continue to argue with you because they just will not accept the truth. Coaches and employers are being sent more problems by parents than ever before. I didn't do it the other guy did is the new phrase. When we interview them all they want to talk about is what we can do for them, when we are trying to find out what they can do for us.

Look at what is going on right now on college basketball. It is wow look how lucky the school is that this player will allow coaches into their homes to beg them to play for them. Should it not be “son you are very luck that you may have the opportunity to attend the University of wherever"? This recruiting thing turns my stomach. These kids have been getting excused for everything they have ever done for the last 17 years and the coach is supposed to then turn their lives around in 4-5 years? The coaches are also supposed to be doing that while also winning every game. Is it not funny that you are not blaming the parents? Don’t they have a job to do? Do you think maybe that they could raise the kids and the coaches could work on game plans? Sure coaches can help kids turn around to a certain extent. I have done it myself. Keep some thing in mind though. Look at the number of players the coach is responsible for. He has around 100 people to take care of. How many does a parent have to take care of? I am all about the coach dumping these jackasses. I don't hold coaches responsible for rehab.

Message to parent DO YOUR JOB!! This is a university not a government/booster club funded rehab center.

Please someone take responsibility. You want JM to take responsibility? Then how about you do the same. Society is not responsible for your kid, the coaches and teachers are not responsible for your kid YOU ARE. You had the kid and you raised the kid. You then handed that problem/kid over to coaches and teachers. If you can’t keep it in your pants then do your damn job!! I am fed up with not placing the blame where it lies. I want the coaches to do the right thing and get rid of these jacka$$es. It is their responsibility to do so. With that said it is not their fault that the problem was created in the first place.

  • Jack '74

    Naysayer–

    Naysayer–

I will admit that Appalachian athletics (all of them) were and are an almost indescribable part of my life. I said "almost". If there was no Appalachian football team, and all the wonderful things I have in my life as a result of my Appalachian experiences, would still be in place without App football–remember, I said everything else would remain the same (sans football), I'd take that deal in half a second and NEVER look back. However, we do have Appalachian athletics (especially football AND baseball right now), so it is like having a lifetime of eating our cakes and having them, too. A lifetime of Black and Gold cakes (icing included) !!! Oh, yeah. Life is GOOD!!!

  • Mountlenoir

    Bcoach,

    You nailed it. 'Nuff said.

  • AppOrange

What makes this problem even tougher, is that it truely is a viscious cycle. These "parents" were let down by their parents and so on. So basically there is little hope without community intervention. Telling someone to do their job, and they have no clue what that is, is a very difficult situation to rectify. I am NOT condoning the behavior, I too just agree with what someone said above, its surprising that more of this stuff does'nt occur.

Although it is very disappointing, I applaud nipping it in the bud and getting rid of this type of behavior and setting a tone. Now, if we can get rid of the end zone flips . . .

  • bcoach

I agree that it is a viscous cycle but I truly believe that it is more about desire than ability. It does not take a brain surgeon to know that your 11 year old child belongs in the house maybe doing homework instead of out on the street at 9:00 pm. You don't have to be a genius to see that your kid is a bully. You are just plain stupid if you see he does not know how to treat a woman. Most of the problem is not knowledge it is desire. Too many parents have become lazy. They will not use discipline if it is inconvenient for them.

I really do understand what you are saying but we just give people too many excuses. We also have a tendency to believe that this is just a low income poverty driven problem. The middle and upper class families are producing a$$holes by the thousands. Individual responsibility is the only thing that will solve the problem. It does not take a village, my mom did it alone.

As far as the end zone flips if you want to stop that (I do) then bring back Andy Massey. One flip and that would not happen again. It would also stop the helmet throwing. The sad thing is that eventually someone is going to have a serious spinal injury and then it might stop because it will not be funny anymore.

  • Appthunder90

    Bcoach

I agree but will add that it is not always a result of laziness. We as a society have made it improper to discipline children the way they used to and the moral values in this country are less and less important every single day

While many of you do not like the comparison of Jerry Moore to Joe PA, the longer Jerry Moore stays the older he gets and looses touch with the players and the things that happen around him, just like Joe PA. AD Cobb has helped cover things up while Chancellor Peacock skips though the daiseys like nothing is wrong.

Meanwhile the board of trustees are the biggest bunch of cheerleaders I have ever seen. Peacock has kept the truth from the trustees. He only tells them what he wants them to know….. Not telling the whole truth is the same as lying.

    Tone at the top.

People who try to equate Coach Moore to the former crap coaches at Penn State are absolute losers in my humble opinion.

Coach Moore is a gentleman and is involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletics. While this involvement does not necessarily mean that he is a good person, it is sort of an indication.

There have been thousands of athletes passing through Coach Moore's leadership. And how many do you know who are losers? While not exactly a 100% correlation, in my observation, bad people spring from bad parenting. And good people are attributable to excellent parenting.

    bcoach, you are right on.

  • Murray

I do not take pleasure typing to point this out to your attention. If you do not ignore and put the blinders on, you too will see that we have serious issues with our football program, AD and Chancellor and we need serious people to solve them before our worst fears are realized.

When we were all in school at App, none of us cared about athletics or the administration. It is not until you get older and wiser to see what needs to be done. Athletics and administration can not change or improve without change in personel.

good article in yesterday's CLT Observer

    http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/08/04/34320

Quote from JM: “I wrote personal, handwritten notes to some players’ moms that their scholarships were in jeopardy, and it made no difference.”

  • MIDWEST

No one is saying that coach Moore isn't a gentleman and I'm not really sure that belonging to the FCA has anything to do with the topic. I don't think people are comparing Moore to Paterno either. No one is saying that Moore is a bad person.

However, overlooking the issues associated with this program recently is extremely naive. "Just holding it together" should not be the mantra of any coach. We need to run a tighter ship, period.

  • Appnaysayer

Murray occasionally overstates his case and unfairly singles out individuals, but he is spot on about the problem being with ASU's overall culture. That athletes can drive drunk, be involved in physical assaults, and the like and still be viewed as important to an institution is just immoral. Indeed our problem is largely a local manifestation of the overall sports culture in this country. Whether it's the rampant nationalism of the Olympics or the liquored up crowds at college games on fall Saturdays, sports is given way way too much emphasis in our culture–especially at our universities. I'm no fan of the NCAA and they are often hypocrites, but I do applaud their (albeit belated) attempt to send this message with the penalties at PSU. I doubt it will make much difference until the money (from TV mostly) is taken out of the college sports equation. But at least it was a step in the right direction.

If college players will eventually be paid for putting butts in seats, then maybe it should be based on incentives for good behavior and following a strict code of discipline, not on the talent level of the athlete or players on the field. I'm not sure it would work, but nothing else seems to be effective. All I know is that carrots seem to work better than sticks in other areas of life.

Quote from JM: “I wrote personal, handwritten notes to some players’ moms that their scholarships were in jeopardy, and it made no difference.”

Take it from other programs that try to maintain. You get a lesser quality student when trying to obtain a better athlete at the college level. They do not care about anyone except for themselves and that goes against the team mentality.

Jerry should retire before one of these players reuin Appalachian and his legacy. But we also need a change in AD and Chancellor and some of these cheerleading trustees.

What kind of a football program is Moore running when he is writing parents to tell them that their son's scholarships are in jeopardy? A gift of a free education is tossed away with hopes of making the NFL then what??? They wash out in a couple of seasons broke and no education to fall back on.

  • Jamey

"What kind of a football program is Moore running when he is writing parents to tell them that their son’s scholarships are in jeopardy?"

He is trying to teach them accountability. Your scholarship is dependent on 2 things: 1. Making grades 2. Contributing on the field. If you are not living up to those 2 standards then you forfeit that free education. I commend him for teaching the lesson of accountability that will serve these young men well in their futures. I know my paycheck in dependent upon my attendance and performance at work. A scholarship is the same as your paycheck in a sense.

    Cadet last night:

"Local product Travaris Cadet, an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State had been turning heads in practice, and last night we saw why. Cadet made no impact in the running game, but as a multi-faceted pass catcher and returner he finished with 8 receptions for 80 yards, and a TD- adding a 28 yard kick return, and 21 yard punt return to his repertoire. "

  • GeneGenethedancingma

Whether some of you guys want to believe it or not the amount of stuff that has been swept under the rug during Coach Moore's tenure is alarming. Given Rizor's DUI was not mentioned until it surfaced in the fight incident is the tip of the iceberg. The administration has a potential public relations nightmare on its hands. Jerry was made an extremely generous offer this winter that would have enabled him to give up the head coaching position in a respectful way and become a goodwill ambassador for the university. He could have stayed involved with the program and remained ASU's coaching legend. He ONLY agreed to allow Scott come back as asst HC and fire Chris IF he could remain one more season. He was to announce his retirement this fall. Judging by his comments at the SoCon media day he has renigged on the deal. He then stepped it up even more in the WS Journal article with the comment "I'm going to go coach as hard as I've ever coached and try to do the very best job I've ever done. Now, if that's not good enough for whoever, then so be it. But to walk away or quit — as long as you can make a difference — that's not something I would consider."

I know some of you guys will scoff at what I say, label me a Coach Moore hater and dismiss me as a nut. But mark it down, this situation will not turn out well.

  • 73Catamount

First, let me say I have ordered my season tickets and am looking forward to the new season and wish ASU success except on October 27.

I have not been keeping up with this site during the summer but have logged on today and am amazed at the overall negativity I see that is being directed toward the footbabll staff and program by many posters.

In late spring, the complaints revolved around ASU not moving to a new conference or to "the big time." My question to those people: did you really go to ASU solely for football? If you wanted to go to a "big time" football school, you should have appplied to a larger university. Having said that, why would you prefer to go to some school just off I-40 or I-85 with a stadium in the middle of a city just so you can say your school is "big time" but normally plays in a meaningless bowl, year in and year out? What is to look forward to about that?

Now I see the complaints revolve around your head coach or the university administration regarding discipline issues by some players.

Many of the posters have it right: you work with the students that are sent to you. You teach and mold as many as you can but you are not going to be able to save or reach every child/young adult. Deal with those who break the rules and move on.

  • Amy

Jamey, please do not be too nieve about what is going on at Appalachian and with Coach Moore. He is not in touch with today's youth. It happens when you get up in age and no one listens to him.

  • MIDWEST

Gene is correct. I'm not sure this will end the way Moore and everyone wants it to end…on a high note.

Hopefully, he will get the message before it is too late. However, when you combine stubbornness with selfishness, the end result is never pretty.

This will be his last year.

  • Mountlenoir

One of my son's high school teachers e-mailed and called me to discuss his not-so-great-grade. She told me flat-out he was in trouble and it could eventually affect his ability to be on a certain team. I guess she should be fired because he hates math. After all, it's her fault, isn't it? And mine. But certainly not HIS.

I commend Coach Moore for reaching out to those parents.

  • bcoach

He ONLY agreed to allow Scott come back as asst HC and fire Chris IF he could remain one more season. GeneGenethedancingmachine

He does not have to allow anything. He does not run the University. He is an employee. The AD can hire anyone he wants and can fire anyone he wants. He has not fired the head coach and he has hired Satterfield. I think probably the AD and the Chancellor are running the show NOT coach Moore. Lastly, regardless of any ability Chris may or may not have to coach anything, and regardless of any relationship issue there may be between Coach and Chris I will tell you this. I will NEVER believe that he would make a deal to fire him so he could coach one more year. You could tell me a lot of things I may believe but that is not one.

There are a lot of comments on here about coach that are just getting stupid. I have some problems with the way some things have been going but some of you guys (that includes Amy) are just WAY out in space.

Why don't we all get back down to earth and enjoy what I hope is going to be a great season. We now have what many have wanted. Chris is gone. We have a great schedule this year with ECU (a more reasonable FBS opponent) and Montana starting off the season. You wanted a challenge and there it is. Satterfield is back to call the plays. We have replaced the O line coach. A high number of coaching changes may just be exactly what we needed. We have thrown an offender off the team and grounded another. Sure I know that is not enough there is still work to be done but with this many positive steps if you are still bitching then that is all you are ever going to do. If that is all you are ever going to do then why are you worth our time?

This is a direct challenge to Midwest

You are a pretty smart guy in a lot of ways. I challenge you to start posting about some of these changes you have been asking for and we now have. Start posting about the positive affect it is going to have on this season and the future of the program. If you are in sales and you coach kids then I know that you talk more about positives than negatives. How good are you? Show us.

    Josef82

Take down that stupid picture and start telling us how proud you are that we are making these changes. Tell us you are looking for great things to come from these changes. That is if you really do care about this program. Do you?

When you look at where we were a year ago and where we are now, how can you continue to bitch constantly? I know many are into this instant gratification thing but damn guys, we have come a LONG way in 12 months.

We know that he ran off good coaches to make room for his son who was not qualified for the job, so I'm not so sure that a deal wasn't cut for him to stay around for one more year. That rumor certainly has been circulating. Whether it's true or not, I don't know.

"Just holding it together" tells you all you need to know. I'd kind of like our goals to be a little more lofty than just barely holding it together. Ask yourself how we got to the point of "just holding it together."

  • MIDWEST

I also disagree with the anti-FBS crowd that tries to paint better athletes as thugs and criminals. I know there are issues from time to time, but great athletes are also highly disciplined. I don't see too many Olympians out robbing banks and killing people. They are intensely focused on their sport, for the most part. Obviously, they need people around them who are strong leaders and demand the discipline, but most of them have a high degree of self discipline.

I would like to hear some opinions on the George Will article I posted (see above) about football. My sons' youth football league recently eliminated special teams from the game to address some of the head injury issues. I didn't like it at first, but it was probably the right call. It certainly takes the kamikaze element out of the game and coaches can spend more time on offensive plays defensive fundamentals which is nice. Seems like the kids may learn more about the fundamentals without kickoffs/returns.

Should the game be changed to address these issues? If so, how? I struggle with this one as I'm kind of a purist, but these are real and serious issues.

Amy – While I agree that Moore has lost touch with the current student-athletes, I think the attempt to use scholarships as leverage was a good sign. Moore is at least realizing that his program is beginning to steer towards the "ME, ME, ME" ideals on the field that were not present during the 2005-2007 seasons. To me, it was an attempt (maybe not a good one) but an attempt nonetheless to say YOU ARE OWED NOTHING BY THIS UNIVERSITY.

The reality is that the Jerry Moore era is coming to a close regardless of who does/does not want it to. The University sees that new blood is needed to continue to grow this program. My sincere hope is that there can be some respectful and appropriate way to transition Moore out and the new coach (likely Satterfield) in. Regardless of anyone's current opinion of Coach Moore, you cannot deny that the man has done more for this university than anyone in recent history.

  • Jamey

bcoach – Your ability to interject reason into an otherwise unreasonable conversation astounds me. Well done.

  • Watauga 72

bcoach, great post. So much negativity from people who have no idea what is actually going on within the program and athletic department…just regurgitating rumors that support what they want to believe.

  • Watauga 72

Midwest, Will's column elevates to a new level the discussions that have been ongoing pertaining to the dangers of football. There are ongoing studies (one at Duke focusing on head trauma) that have highlighted these issues. By adding his voice to the discussion, Will has brought the issue to a different audience. As fans we enjoy the game, but we are, in a way, contributing to these issues.

    Gene Gene,

"I know some of you guys will scoff at what I say, label me a Coach Moore hater and dismiss me as a nut…"

    OK. As you say.

  • GeneGenethedancingma

bcoach your defense of Coach Moore is admireable, though somewhat misguided. Consider Peacock and Cobb's situation. How do they dismiss someone who has garnered legendary status from legions of adoring fans who believe the man can do no wrong? Do they take the risk/reward chance of tarnishing his and the university's reputation by exposing what has gone on? Do they stay silent on everything and take the public relations hit by not renewing his contract? Drawing a line in the sand with the rhetoric Coach Moore has been dishing out these past few weeks the university is in the proverbial no win situation. As I said earlier, this isn;t going to turn out well.

  • GeneGenethedancingma

    GoApps73 I knew someone wouldn't disappoint.

  • Appnaysayer

Will is a baseball guy, author of a decent book on the subject. No love lost between George and football. Love his description of the sport as violence punctuated by committee meetings.

The question regarding behavior is simply this: Do you want to win and accept this sort of behavior or lose running a squeaky clean program?

No one has yet demonstrated that it's possible to run a squeaky clean football program (in which athletes are mainstreamed in classes, get only the same tutors as other students, the profs, etc. and have no arrests) and win at the highest level. Indeed, the reverse is true. As documented by SI, he better the team, the more likely to have felony arrests.

I still say it's not a matter of coaching or anything else. It's people like us (and unfortunately I count myself among them, though every once in a while I think about abandoning ship) who are willing to put up with a felony or two as long as the team wins. And some alumni who just flat out don't care how many arrests we have as long as they get to the Saturday tailgate. Several posts above admit as much. We have met the enemy and it is us.

That was pathetic. For your statement to stand up it would mean that only 5-6 people (all on this blog) know of how terrible coach is. Everything that has happened is a secret. Nobody reads any papers, listens to radio, or reads blogs. Looks like we don't need an AD or Peacock as coach runs the university.

  • asu7

There are always going to be trouble makers. It is how those situations are handled that makes the difference. I believe things are starting to head in the right direction so I will reserve my fussing for when they go astray again.

There have been lots of positive things happen in the last 12 months as bcoach mentioned. I will reserve my right to bitch until things go astray.

On a really positive note … OUR TICKETS CAME YESTERDAY!!!!!! The AD gift is awesome and I will be Raley this year!!!! Spot 240 yall are invited!!!

  • GeneGenethedancingma

bcoach you need a reality check. You can also stop using the absurd to make a point. I didn't say Coach Moore is "terrible". Fact is I like and admire him for the type of person he is. Unfortunately his personality as a fixer and Father figure leads him to believe he can rehabilitate players who go down the wrong road. Unfortunately that goodness lends itself to being soft on discipline and keeping everything within the family. Anyone paying attention to the program since day one of the JM era knows that. Coach's good nature, forgiving ways and dealing with problems by keeping them in house has caused a lot of issues for the administration over the years. You may not want to see that as the case, but I can assure you it is.

  • MIDWEST

You don't rehabilitate players by sweeping their wrongdoings under the carpet. College players need discipline. Moore tries to manage the team as if they were NFL players (personality mgt) and it doesn't work that way with 18-22 year olds. Treat them with dignity and respect, but lay down (and enforce) the law…the law set forth by the head coach.

  • Murray

    Gene,

To say that Jerry Moore is bigger than the institution of Appalachian is absurd. Though Cobb and Peacock helped Moore sit a top of pedestal because, they are afraid of bad publicity and that they money will stop coming in.

I'm not that taken with the apron (Yosefers know what I mean), but maybe it'll keep me from spilling a beer (or drool) on myself this season. Wonder if you can request Greenwood after being assigned Raley?

Midwest, I'd probably send my kid to a lower-tier type school with good academics where they can't hide him from real classwork (Wake and Duke are two possibilities). Or even a D-III school. If he's good enough for the NFL, they will find him. None of the programs you mention are really "clean" IMO.

  • Thanks asu7! See you at the game!

  • asu7

The young alum lot is real nice because people tailgate in the grass so no dodging anyone. What time should I pull into Raley and not have to dodge people? Usually I get to where ever I am tailgating by 9 or 10. Everyone just needs to be patient.

There is your answer with Murray. An angry local that is mad at ASU. Geeze, never saw any of that while I was at App.

  • GoApps73

    Murray:

I don't even know why I try and this is it. And, if I can glean the reasoning from you for your comments:

And VT should fire their President, AD, and Head Football coach as well because:

    1. Frank Beamer is old and some of his players think of him as a father figure.

    2. Frank Beamer hired his son.

    3. Frank Beamer has never won a national championship.

    4. Frank Beamer has been the oversight of Marcus Vick, Brenden Ore, Ike Whitaker, and a host of other personnel problems. A LOT more issues have been at VT than have resided at ASU and that is not even arguable.

    5. The President, Dr. Steger, was the oversight person of Frank Beamer, football player incidents, and the horrific campus incident a couple of years ago. Also his football teams have never won a national championship.

    6. The AD was the oversight of Frank Beamer, the personnel problems on the football team, and the hiring of Frank Beamer's son. His football teams have never won a national championship.

My son graduated from VT and I keep close tabs on them. It is surprising just how many football personnel issues wind up in the court system at Blacksburg. As I stated, the issues at ASU are not even close to the numbers.

  • Murray

GoApp73, I only care about Appalachian. There has too much covered up to stave off bad publicity under Cobb and Peacock. Appalachian is not a football school. Appalachian is an institution of higher learning that happens to have a football program.

And before you get all riled up and fling another zinger at Western, realize I pull for APP except when they play WCU.

No need for you to poke a jab at Cullowhee as it appears your problems are with your own classmates or alumni.

Be thankful and appreciative of the many successes your program has had over the years.

    73Catamount,

I APPologise for ASU7. You guys did not deserve that. I pull for you guys as well but will find that harder to do now that you guys stole our coaches!

  • Appthunder90

    Murray

I am only appthunder. Just because you post as Murray Lewis Amy and who knows what others does not mean tht others hate your affinity for smoke and mirrors.

What's a rivalry without the rivalry?

  • Murray

Sorry to disappoint you Appthunder, been only Murray all my life. So sorry you can not see the light.

By the way, when did you graduate?

  • Appthunder90

    What difference does that make?

  • Murray

    That young huh?

  • Appnaysayer

Murray must read nothing I post. Otherwise he would know that I said "ASU is an institution of higher learning and football is ancillary" years ago–and more than once.

Your sentiments are not off base, Murray. But you make too many unsupported statements. I'm not the most well-liked person on this blog, but I know that things go better here when we can talk about issues by citing some evidence and argue points–instead of just blurting out what we think and expecting everyone to believe it just because we say so. And I have a copyright on "Appnaysayer."

  • This guy

Shut up, Murray. You're obviously some toothless, disgruntled mountain man that's angry at those dag nab college students taking over your town and keeping you from being able to drive your heard of goats down King St.

    You are a sad man.

  • Appthunder90

I graduate in December as if that makes any impact on this convoluted conversation whatsoever. What year did you graduate? You clearly are angry because the university is just too blamed big. It makes traffic on king street terrible and you can't go anywhere without seeing college kids having a good time. It's just ridiculous. why don't you just relocate to a mOuntain town that doesn't have a university in it?

  • Murray

Graduated 1975. Angry, not a chance. I apologize to saying, "when you are older" but you will see changes that need to be made.

  • appthunder90

there will always be changes that need to be made. they do not include, unwarranted, unsupported, biased, slanted attacks. but, the need for change, as well as the attacks will be present for as long as any university exists.

  • Murray

Appthunder, have you ever played poker? Ever heard the phrase "keeping your cards close to your chest?"

Unwarranted, unsupported, biased, slanted attacks??? Again, really? If only you had the luxury of knowing what so many know. Unfortunately, you only hear it from me.

  • GoApps73

    Disgruntled "former" employee.

  • Murray

Again, not disgruntled and never employed by Appalachian.

  • Appthunder90

    Murray

Not sure of the reasoning for the poker reference but yes, I have played. If you ever want to lose your money let me know.

And yes, unsupported being the most chief aspect of any post you have ever placed. Support one of your claims and perhaps you will receive some positive attentions.

  • Murray

Appthunder, do you live in Boone?

  • onlooker

    Appthunder90

Do NOT get together with him or give him any personal information.

  • Murray

Onlooker is a first post. Is there something about a 60 year old man that just does not seem right? We can all meet in the parking lot at the football game too.

  • Appthunder90

    I live on beech

  • Murray

I play golf at Linville. Do you play?

  • appthunder90

no, im more of a hit golf balls off the mountain type of golfer

  • Murray

Appthunder want to play golf at Linville?

  • appfantoo

    Murray doesn't live in Boone.

I know who he is – practically nothing he says is true, but you probably didn't need me to tell you that.

  • Appthunder90

Not particularly, no. I cannot imagine you would enrich my life whatsoever with your pessimism and your unfounded pronouncements. You're probably roachel.

  • Murray

Appthunder, you can never say you were not offered.

  • asu7

Ya so sorry 73. No one would want Murray at their campus. That was below the belt. I am sorry for that.

I wouldn't even wish that on the fine folks at furple.
